The Contender Series veteran had posted a 3-1 record since losing on DWCS in 2020, and had won a regional title by defeating Rafael Carvalho in his last outing.

Also adorning the KSW 110 card, UFC vet Rogerio Bontorin was making his KSW debut, looking to follow up on a 2023 victory under Japanese promotion RIZIN FF.

Promotion officials recently announced the addition of multiple fights to both RIZIN 44 and RIZIN Landmark 6, which take place in September and October, respectively.

Already stacked with names like Kleber Koike, Juntaro Ushiku, Spike Carlyle, and Todd Duffee, RIZIN 44 has added two new fights, as DEEP Interim Flyweight Champion
Ryuya Fukuda (20-7-1) meets Erson Yamamoto (4-5), and Takaki Soya (12-5-1) faces off against Ramazan Temirov (16-2). Both fights take place in the flyweight division.

The cross-promotion billed as Bellator MMA vs. RIZIN also doubles as RIZIN 40, and the Japanese promotion announced Nurmagomedov’s involvement in a press release issued on Wednesday. Additionally, RIZIN officials revealed three previously unreported match-ups for what is shaping up to be a promising fight card:

UFC alum Bontorin (16-4, 2NC) will be making his RIZIN debut in his fight with Yuki Motoya (32-10, 1NC). Bontorin has not competed since his exit from the UFC, which saw him struggle to make the flyweight limit, pulling out of a fight with Manel Kape in June due to weight cutting issues.

Bontorin was cut a short time later. The Brazilian missed weight for a 2021 fight with Matt Schnell, the result of which was overturned to a No Contest when Bontorin failed a drug test.

Junior Tafa (2-0), the younger brother of UFC heavyweight Justin Tafa, will have Mark Hunt in his corner when he makes his promotional debut against Tsuyoshi Sudario (6-1), who has spent his entire career with RIZIN. UFC vet Naoki Inoue (17-3), finally, meets Kenta Takizawa (13-8) in a fight originally scheduled for July.

Bontorin (16-4, 1NC), 30, had been expected to face Manel Kape at the Singapore-based event. However, a botched weight cut resulted in the Brazilian being hospitalized, and the fight was scratched from the card.

Cageside Press confirmed Bontorin’s release from the promotion, after UFC Roster Watch, an automated service, noted his removal from the active roster. While he’s now a free agent, where ever Bontorin lands, he’ll be fighting at bantamweight moving forward.

Winning his way into the UFC on Dana White’s Contender Series: Brazil in 2018, Bontorin got off to a good start in the 125 pound division. He won his first two fights in the UFC proper, picking up victories over Magomed Bibulatov and Raulian Paiva.

Things would soon turn south for Rogerio Bontorin, however. He would lose his next two fights, against Ray Borg and Kai Kara-France. A win over Matt Schnell in May 2021 was later overturned after Bontorin tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic. He then faced Brandon Royval this past January, and while Bontorin made weight, he wound up losing a split decision.

Bontorin’s inability to make weight for UFC 275, however, appears to have been the final straw.

Bontorin had been expected to compete in a main card fight with Manel Kape at the PPV event in Singapore this weekend. However, during Friday’s weigh-in, it was reported that Bontorin had fallen ill. Eurosport later revealed that the Brazilian fighter had been transported to hospital.

A report by MMA Fighting subsequently cited Bontorin’s coach, who confirmed that issues had arose during his weight cut. “He was in the process of cutting weight and felt a lot of pain in the lumbar area when he was 2kg [4.5 pounds] over, then he left the bathtub and it only got worse. We called Marcus, from the UFC staff, to check on him and we needed an ambulance to go to the hospital. We ran some tests and he had renal insufficiency, so he’ll stay in the hospital until tomorrow,” Gile Ribeiro, Bonteron’s coach, told the website.

Bontorin (16-4, 1NC) has lost three of his last four fights, with one No Contest in the mix. That No Contest, stemming from a 2021 fight with Matt Schnell, saw a win for Bontorin overturned when he tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic. Contested at bantamweight, Bontorin also came in heavy for that fight, but dropped back down to flyweight in January and successfully made weight in a loss to Brandon Royval.

Manel Kape has won his last two fights, but has seen both of his bouts in 2022 fall through.

What comes next for Chikadze and other fighters who fell short on Saturday? Read on.

Giga Chikadze

Giga has skill, and Giga has heart. He simply didn’t have enough of the two to get past Calvin Kattar on Saturday. By the end of the fifth round, it felt like the bout could have been stopped, but the Georgian was just too tough to go out like that.

What’s next for Chikadze is time off. He needs it, after that war. A nice six month break at least. Kattar himself took a year off after his loss to Max Holloway, and it most certainly paid dividends. A year might be a bit much, but give Chikadze time to regroup.

When he comes back — that’s where things get interesting. If The Korean Zombie comes up short against Alexander Volkanovski in April, that fight books itself. The two have traded some barbs online and in the media in recent weeks. If Zombie wins the title, then a fight with Dan Ige could work, depending on when the Hawaiian is ready to return.

Chase Sherman

Heavyweight Chase Sherman admitted ahead of UFC Vegas 46 that his career was at a crossroads going into the fight. A loss would mean three consecutive defeats, and could potentially send him packing.

Sherman then found himself submitted against Jake Collier, which was Collier’s first submission win in the UFC.

Sherman is 1-3 in his current run with the promotion, after going 2-5 in his earlier stint. The only saving grace here might be that heavyweight needs bodies, and Sherman is capable of some fun fights. At 32, he’s still young in the sport. If the UFC keeps him around, a fight with Harry Hunsucker works. If not, it might be back to the bare knuckle realm, where Sherman is a former BKFC champ.

Rogerio Bontorin

Brazil’s Rogerio Bontorin is in a bit of a pickle. Flyweight has been red-hot the past year and a half, but it’s not the deepest division. That makes Bontorin someone you’d like to keep around. But technically, he’s 0-3 right now. He would have been 1-3, but a win against Matt Schnell was overturned to a No Contest thanks to the Brazilian using a banned diuretic. He also missed weight for that fight.

Still, there’s a chance Bontorin sticks around — and we’re here to play matchmaker, not judge whether someone should or not should lose their job. So assuming Bontorin’s UFC career continues — he had been ranked #7 ahead of the fight, after all — let’s pair him up with someone on the opposite trajectory. Manel Kape had a bit of a scare when he started his UFC run, despite being highly touted. Now, he’s won two straight, but is behind Bontorin in the rankings. Kape last fought in December, so the timing is pretty solid.

Jennifer Maia

Jennifer Maia has now lost to Katlyn Chookagian twice, making it pretty clear who the better flyweight is.

A former Invicta FC champ, Maia’s UFC run has been inconsistent at best — but she held her own against champ Valentina Shevchenko when she did get a title shot. In fact, she looked better than most of Shevchenko’s opponents, who rarely make it to the final bell these days.

Maia has a history of missing weight at 125, though it seems well behind her, but it’s unlikely she could move down. She’d be undersized as a bantamweight, so a move up is out as well. She’s probably, like Chookagian (who became a free agent after the fight) going to have to play gatekeeper for a while.

That brings us to Andrea Lee. “KGB” has won two straight, and battered Cynthia Calvillo back in November — leading to a corner stoppage after the second round. After enduring a three-fight skid, Lee has bounced back nicely. Now, let’s see what her ceiling really is, and if she’s ready for the top 5 of the division. With Lee ranked #8 and Maia #4 at least prior to UFC Vegas 46, it’s a pairing that makes sense.

Dakota Bush

The kind of history you don’t want to make: being the first UFC fighter of the year to be finished. That’s what lightweight Dakota Bush had to endure at UFC Vegas 46, put away by “Slava Claus” himself.

Bush is now 0-2 in the UFC, and badly needs a win. Alex Munoz is in a similar spot. Put these two together. Someone gets their first win inside the octagon.

Joanderson Brito

Featherweight Joanderson Brito nearly had to pull out of UFC Vegas 46 due to an inconclusive COVID-19 test. Luckily he was able to stay on the card after being re-tested; not so luckily, he lost a decision against Bill Algeo.

That was Brito’s UFC debut. TJ Laramie debuted for the UFC in 2020, losing his first fight. He was forced out of a couple of bouts in 2021. If he’s ready to return, a match-up with Brito works.

After Dakota “Hairy” Bush fought earlier in the night, it was time for “Raw Dawg” to hit the octagon at UFC Vegas 46. Clearly, the UFC’s matchmakers have a sense of humor. But the flyweight contest between Brandon Royval (the aforementioned “Raw Dawg”) and Rogerio Bontorin was no joke. Both men were ranked 125lb’ers, looking to make a statement to start the new year.

No touch of the gloves as both men look to get right to the action to start the first round. Rogerio Bontorin looked to be waiting for Brandon Royval early on. After a brief exchange on the feet, Royval connected with a spinning back fist but Bontorin got under Royval and showed his strength with a powerful takedown. Royval the crafty flyweight that he is, found a way back to his feet. Royval connected with some more strikes before Bontorin took the fight back to the mat. Once back at the feet with a quick scramble, the horn sounded for the end of round ne.

With round one being tightly contested, both men came out swinging with Royval being planted back onto the mat. Rogerio briefly was in danger of an arm bar but found his way out, gaining back position of Brandon Royval. Bontorin and Royval traded on the feet and Royval looked to have wobbled with a punch but it was confirmed that he rolled on his ankle. He shook it off and continued to exchange with Bontorin, who ended the round controlling Royval on the mat as we headed to the third.

Round three looked similar to round two with the strength of Rogerio Bontorin being on display with another takedown. Brandon Royval caught Rogerio in an arm bar and it looked like Rogerio Bontorin was almost about to tap. It was debated by the commentators if it was or was not a tap as Royval made his way on top of Rogerio Bontorin. With a close fight, Royval looked to score points with judges ending the third round on top, throwing heavy strikes.

Brazil’s Bontorin (17-3) makes the walk to the octagon for the sixth time on Saturday. After suffering the first two-fight losing streak of his career, he got back into the win column at UFC 262 last May.

It was a crucial win for him.

“I was very happy. Every win is important but that one specifically because I was coming from two losses was very important to me,” Bontorin told the media, including Cageside Press, during UFC Vegas 46 media day.

Bontorin fights the No. 5 ranked flyweight Brandon Royval on Saturday, and with a win, the Brazilian will be in the top five of the division. Bontorin likes the match-up with Royval and thinks the first person to make a mistake could be in trouble.

“Every opponent is difficult and has a difficult match, especially because I think if you don’t respect your opponent, things turn bad. I think he has his mistakes, and I also have some holes in my game, and whoever makes the first mistake is going down,” Bontorin said.

The match-up on paper looks like it will be very exciting and could easily nab a Fight of the Night bonus. The Brazilian agrees. “Yes, I think this fight will be a heated one.”

MMA Fighting was the first to report the news that No. 5 ranked flyweight Brandon Royval will fight No. 7 ranked Rogerio Bontorin on January 15 at a yet-to-be-announced event. Both fighters would confirm the booking on social media.

After starting his UFC career on absolute fire, Royval (12-6) has dropped two straight for the first time in his career. “Raw Dawg” lost to the current flyweight champion Brandon Moreno last December and most recently lost to Alexandre Pantoja in a title eliminator. However, Royval has already made himself a fan favorite with his wild style and two crazy fights with Tim Elliott and Kai Kara-France.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, Bontorin (17-3) snapped his two-fight losing streak in which he lost to Kara-France and Ray Borg. In May, he defeated Matt Schnell via unanimous decision. The bout was a bantamweight due to the scheduling of it. The Brazilian missed weight by a pound.

No location, venue, or broadcast plan has been officially announced for the January 15 UFC event.

On Wednesday, USADA (the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency), which oversees the UFC’s Anti-Doping Policy, announced that Bontorin had been handed a three-month suspension after hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) was found in an out-of-competition urine sample he provided on May 1, 2021.

Per USADA, the culprit appears to have been a contaminated supplement. “Following notification of his positive test, Bontorin provided open containers of two dietary supplements he obtained from a Brazilian compounding pharmacy that he was using prior to his positive test for analysis by a WADA-accredited laboratory,” a press release on the matter stated. “Although no prohibited substances were listed on the supplement product labels, the analysis revealed the presence of HCTZ in the products.”

Because the supplement in question was not USADA certified, Bontorin was still subject to disciplinary action.

Bontorin (17-3, 1NC) would go on to fight two weeks after his positive test was collected, presumably prior to the results being returned. He defeated Matt Schell in a three-round unanimous decision, but missed weight for the bout. The Brazilian hit the scales at 137lbs.

Prior to the victory, Bontorin had lost two straight, to Ray Borg and Kai Kara-France. His suspension is backdated to May 1, 2021 making him already eligible to return to competition.
