In the main event of the Myrtle Beach-based card, UFC alum Francisco Rivera Jr. faced former Bellator MMA standout Ricky Bandejas in a bantamweight bout.
Also in action on Wednesday, Mandel “Rat Garbage” Nallo, a TriStar athlete and former Bellator standout, took on Jorge Daniel La Terra. UFC vets collided when Teruto Ishihara went up against Vince Morales, and Saidyokub Kakhramonov saw his first action since a rather surprising UFC release, against Rafael Costa.

Update, 7:25PM ET: Kakhramonov vs. Costa is your co-main event at XMMA 6

Consider the bantamweight showdown between Ricky Bandejas and Leandro Higo at Bellator 249 a battle for divisional relevance.

Both men had been through some ups and downs in recent times. Bandejas entered the night off a loss to Sergio Pettis, for his part. After rocketing to fame with his finish of James Gallagher, Bandejas had struggled when given steps up in competition.

Former title challenger Higo, meanwhile, had only recently snapped a two fight win streak, thanks to a victory over Shawn Bunch. But he missed weight for Bellator 249 at the weigh-in on Wednesday, throwing something of a wrench in the works.

Thanks to the loss of the Patricky Pitbull fight just before Bellator 249’s main card kicked off, Bandejas vs. Higo wound up as the co-main event. And it was active right out of the gate. Plenty of back-and-forth, before the pair went to the ground late in the opening round, with Higo working from the top. He worked his way to mount with about 45 second remaining, and took advantage of Bandejas exposing his neck for a mounted guillotine attempt. That fell through rather quickly however, which would afford a second round (or more).

It wasn’t long before Higo had Bandejas on the ground in the second, however. Soon enough, Higo had latched on with a body lock. Wearing the former title challenger like a backpack, Bandejas simply could not fight him off. Higo displayed excellent wrist control, then locked on a choke that was more across the jawline than anything. Bandejas soon tapped, and Leandro Higo had the submission win.

If you’re talking relevance, Higo retains his. With two wins in a row, he now has the chance to put together a larger run in a division that has recently seen an influx of new talent. He will, however, have to ensure that another miss at the scales does not transpire.

Official Result: Leandro Higo def. Ricky Bandejas by submission (rear-naked choke), Round 2, 2:32

Bellator 249 has bantamweight Ricky Bandejas in another tough match-up. Bandejas (13-4), who has fought the likes of Sergio Pettis, Juan Archuleta, and James Gallagher, will go up against Leandro Higo this Thursday.

Brazil’s Higo challenged Darrion Caldwell for gold back in 2018. Which makes this fight a chance for Bandejas to break into the upper echelon of the 135lb division.

“We get so close, and every time to make the next step, level up, we seem to be losing,” the New Jersey native said during the Bellator 249 media day. “So I’m hoping Thursday, we get the win, come full circle and redeem all those losses.”

Opponent Higo seemed more focused on James Gallagher than Bandejas himself ahead of Bellator 249. Higo lamented a potential bout with Gallagher falling through, which led to the Bandejas booking. Somewhat puzzling, given Bandejas made his name in Bellator by knocking Gallagher out.

Bandejas isn’t too worried about being overlooked, however. “I don’t know. I don’t put much thought in it,” he told Cageside Press. “If he is, that’s his mistake, and we’ll find out Thursday.”

Wednesday, Higo missed weight for the bout, by a full three pounds. It is, however, expected to proceed.

On his opponent, Bandejas said that “he seems to be more of a veteran, he has a lot of fights. He’s been in there with the best.” As a result, what he’s expecting is “just a tough fight. Don’t give him any opportunities to take. Just go out there and fight hard.”

Overall, Bandejas no doubt knows what a win can do for him in a division he believes is “stacked.” That includes the recent arrival of UFC alum Brett Johns.

“They signed so many prospects and so many guys the last year or two. Guys with zero losses, one loss, and I can’t wait to mix it up with all of them, and see where I stand,” he said. That’s exactly what he’ll be looking for with a win, in fact.

“Anything. One of the top guys,” said Bandejas on what comes after he gets his hand raised.

Aaron Pico continued to rebuild, Jay Jay Wilson lost the weigh-in battle but won the war, Jordan Mein had a rude welcome, and Sergio Pettis may have clinched a title shot. Those were the takeaways from Friday’s Bellator 242, which went down at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT on Friday night.

The show was the first back for Bellator MMA since going on hiatus in the face of the deadly coronavirus pandemic. After taking several months to chart their course, the promotion returned with its “Fightsphere” — featuring extensive testing and isolation for all involved. End result, an event that went off seemingly without a hitch.

Unless you were on the losing end of things in your fight Friday night, of course.

In the main event, Sergio Pettis got the job done with a dominant showing against Ricky Bandejas. The former UFC flyweight standout has a new home in terms of both promotion and weight class. With two wins in 2020 in the Bellator cage it’s hard not to consider him a lock for a shot at Bellator’s vacant 135lb title.

Jordan Mein, the long-serving Canadian veteran and former UFC athlete, made his debut Friday at Bellator 242. Things did not go his way, as after two years off dealing with knee issues, Mein lost a decision to Jason Jackson.

Jay Jay Wilson lost at the scales on Thursday, coming in well over the featherweight limit for his fight with Tywan Claxton. But come Friday, he did enough to earn the win, at least on two judge’s scorecards. With opposing 30-27 scores, this one was scored all over the map.

Opening up the Bellator 242 main card was Aaron Pico, continuing to rebuild by earning his second straight finish victory. This time, Solo Hatley Jr was on the wrong end of a rear-naked choke — Pico’s first submission win.

The main event of Bellator 242 may not have been a title eliminator officially, but in a bantamweight division without a champ, it certainly felt that way. Sergio Pettis had the right name, the pedigree, and a couple of wins split between the UFC and Bellator. Ricky Bandejas was the homegrown success story, the man who had stopped the hype train of James Gallagher to put his name on the map.

With names like Archuleta and Mix also in the mix (no pun intended), a big performance Friday was key for whoever came out on top in the Bellator 242 main event.

Bandejas found himself on the outside early, Pettis holding center and pressing the action, aided by his kicks. Bandejas answered a front kick by Pettis with a low kick. Pettis closed the distance, and landed a punch upstairs. While Bandejas tried to circle out, Pettis cut him off, and continued to fire a multitude of kicks. A superman punch would get Pettis inside again, and he nearly connected upstairs a second time. Bandejas finally saw things go his way in the final minute, when he was able to land a takedown and go straight to side control. There just wasn’t enough time to make anything happen, however, and Pettis scrambled up with about 10 seconds remaining.

Round two had Pettis attacking the legs some more. The pair would exchange, and Bandejas made this one closer, shooting for a takedown earlier in the frame. But Pettis reversed, getting on top. Bandejas was active on the bottom, but Pettis stayed with him, and they worked their way up. No real offense in the sequence, but it might serve to make Bandejas rethink his approach if nothing else. At the end of the round, Bandejas launched a flying knee — but caught a right hand to the face.

We've got some quick back & forth going on between @RickyBandejas and @SergioPettis in round 2️⃣.#Bellator242 pic.twitter.com/8PUx9juXPY

Round three opened in similar fashion to the previous frames. Bandejas outside. Pettis holding center, walking forward, chopping at his opponent’s lead leg. Finding his way inside on the taller man, landing. More effective with his striking despite the reach and height disadvantage.

The leg kicks of Pettis were starting to add up, putting Bandejas off-balance. With only three rounds to work, Ricky Bandejas was way too far behind. When it came time to go to the judges, there was no question. Pettis had won it.

Also no question that, after that performance, Pettis appears to have made his case for a shot at the vacant belt. Who it comes against will be interesting.

Official Result: Sergio Pettis def. Ricky Bandejas by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Ricky Bandejas believes Pettis win will lead to big opportunities.

A fan favorite in the promotion, and for good reason, Ricky Bandejas is happy to be back in the Bellator cage. A winner of two straight via finish, Bandejas is looking to add Sergio Pettis’ impressive name to his recent victories. With a vacant title in the bantamweight division, a win could go a long way. The pair face off at Bellator 242 this Friday.

“I’m super excited. I hope to keep the knockout streak going,” Bandejas told media outlets including Cageside Press this week. “Fighting a guys like Pettis, huge name, I hope this will push me further ahead in the division.”

“Just another name with a big following, hype, and hopefully put an end to that,” he added.

Bandejas has derailed a hype train before. The Irish phenom, James Gallagher, a teammate of Conor McGregor, was knocked out by Bandejas when the two fought at Bellator 204. Bandejas is also open to a rematch with Gallagher, on his home turf.

“Beat Pettis then a rematch with Gallagher, in Ireland, headlining, I think that’d be great,” Bandejas suggested. “I think a lot of people would want to see that, and it’s only going to help my stock.”

Bandejas trains full time at American Top Team in Coconut Creek Florida. One of the most talented gyms in the world with former champions and top contenders walking through the doors. Bandejas has great minds and fighting styles at his disposal in Florida.

Training with UFC fighter Randy Costa ahead of this fight has been one plus. “It’s awesome, a guy like Randy [Costa], he’s really talented, he’s good. He fights like Pettis,” Bandejas told the media. “Having a gym like this, you can get any style that you’re going to have in an opponent. So that helps. Just to mix is up with the best guys in the world, that’s a positive.”

Bandejas believes he is ready for the ultimate test in an opponent like Sergio Pettis. The former UFC vet has fought some of the best names in the world and at only 26 years old has a lot of experience under his belt. Bandejas feels he is ready for this.

“He’s fought some of the best guys in the world. It’s a test, I’m excited,” he said. “Only his second fight in Bellator so I’m definitely excited for this test. I’m ready for this main card spot, ready for whatever happens.”

Bellator 242 goes down Friday, July 24 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. The main card airs live on Paramount Network and DAZN.

At first, it seemed a bit perplexing for Sergio Pettis to leave the UFC in free agency in 2019. Still a young prospect with his prime years still ahead of him, he walked away as both of the divisions that he had competed in, flyweight and bantamweight, were getting as exciting as they had ever been in recent years. While previously relegated to the shadow of his older brother as he entered the Octagon, Pettis established himself as a strong contender in his own right with wins over the likes of Joseph Benavidez and Brandon Moreno. Last year, Pettis left the Octagon in free agency with the chance to make a more immediate impact in rival Bellator.

As far as promotional debuts go, Pettis could hardly have asked for a better one in January. After having spent six years in the UFC, he injected new life into the shallow Bellator bantamweight division when he throttled Alfred Kashakyan with a first round stoppage that announced him as a major player in the weight class. The victory was an absolute mauling, leaving fans and pundits alike pencilling Pettis in for a fight with contenders like Juan Archuleta or James Gallegher for the vacant title.

Few fighters have ever had the kind of breakout performance that Ricky Bandejas had back in 2018. Building up a quiet 10-1 in New Jersey’s Cage Fury Fighting Championships, the Florida product was an unknown taking on brash prospect James Gallegher. It was the perfect scene, the boisterous Irishman taunting Bandejas inside the cage before being brutally stopped with a first round knockout that made the rounds on Sportscenter and was a candidate for Knockout of the Year.

Bandejas went from prospect to top contender, and Bellator thrust him into back-to-back fights with fellow title hopefuls Juan Archuleta and Patrick Mix. Coming up short in both fights, the young fighter who had enjoyed a quick ascent was just as quickly in the midst of a rebuild. Bellator held steadfast in their commitment to him, keeping him active as he notched wins over Ahmet Kayretli and Frans Miambo. In Bellator’s much anticipated return, Bandejas now has a huge opportunity to get back into the title conversation should he turn away the bigger name in Pettis.

Stylistically, Pettis should look to work leg-kicks and takedowns to neutralize the striking of Bandejas. While Pettis has shown himself to be competent on the feet, Bandejas has shown holes in his ground game that Pettis would be foolish not to try and exploit early and often. Bandejas should look to work behind a crisp jab and keep Pettis at the end of his strikes where he has the best chance to control the distance and use his full arsenal.

Currently, aforementioned contenders Archuleta and Mix are expected to compete for the vacant title later this year and a victory for Pettis figures to make him the next title challenger. Bandejas would likely need another high profile victory or two before challenging either man potentially considering his losses to both men in recent years makes a rematch difficult to promote at this juncture.

It’s been a while, but there’s enough action going down this week to bring you a fresh edition of our Weekly MMA Prospect Report — the first of the pandemic era.

Titan FC 62 | Thursday | US

Welterweight, Jared Gooden (16-4)

Jared Gooden has had a few setbacks in his career but has always managed to get back up and stay active. After suffering his last loss a year ago he’s now on a two-fight winning streak. Gooden has some holes as he still needs to work on his takedown defense which Tony Graves was able to exploit. Gooden is well-rounded with good wrestling, striking, and athleticism. He’s very explosive an everything he throws is with ill intentions. He fights Trent McCown (8-4) who is coming off a loss.

Heavyweight, Odie Delaney (2-0)

Odie Delaney was a Division 1 All-America wrestler out of The Citadel, a military college in South Carolina. He is only 2-0 as a pro and went 2-0 as an amateur. He does have a great team behind him to start his young career, that being American Top Team. Delaney has ran through all four of his opponents with three submission wins and a TKO. Of the footage available, Delaney of course has shown good wrestling. I was impressed with his movement in the grappling realm, moving pretty quick scrambling well for a big 6’3″ athlete. All three of his submissions were different – armbar, d’arce choke, and a kimura. Sure a lot is still to be seen but has the tools to at least watch for. He fights Prince McLean (7-8) which is obviously a set-up fight for Delaney.

ACA 107 | Friday | Russia

Heavyweight, Magomed Ismailov (15-3-1)

Usually a middleweight, Magomed Ismailov is moving up to heavyweight for this fight. With a background in combat sambo, Ismailov is a powerhouse athlete who is very fun to watch. He does have power on his feet but Ismailov has every desire to get his fights to the mat. When you tune in to watch Ismailov you would think you’re watching a professional wrestling match with the way Ismailov picks opponents up and drives them to the mat. It’s just awesome. He’s insanely strong and can elevate his opponents at any time and put them down. He has a few submissions but has better ground-and-pound. He fights veteran Aleksander Emelianenko (29-7-1) which is a tough test.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YIn9Z21-AQ&t=1s

Featherweight, Kurban Taygibov (10-1)

After coming up short in his pro debut, Kurban Taygibov rebounded winning ten consecutive fights in a row now. The Russian is pretty well-rounded with a methodical but dangerous approach on the feet and a strong wrestling base with a Sambo background. On the feet, he throws a good one-two but often throws single strikes. He gets away with it because of his hand speed and explosiveness. Taygibov has excellent shot selection and precise accuracy. Although he only has four stoppages he’s still dangerous. Taygibov can wrestle just as well but conserves his energy much better on the feet. He has solid takedown defense but off his back would be his biggest weakness. He fights Ramazan Kishev (15-3) who is a decent test.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5YUe3QHvF8&t=983s

LFA 86 | Friday | US

Bantamweight, Mando Gutierrez (3-0)

Mando Gutierrez is only 3-0 as a pro but went 7-0 as an amateur winning a few titles as well. He’s impressed me with his aggressiveness and pace he’s able to put on. On the feet, he’s usually bull-rushing forward but does have some kicks in his arsenal. He’s usually striking/kicking to close the distance to get the takedown. Mando wants the fight on the mat to show his slick jiu-jitsu. Even off his back, Gutierrez is very dangerous with fluid hips helping him attack submissions and scramble. He has a smooth back take and has a knack for finishing with a choke. Mando is a big submission threat and seems to have good cardio which is surprising with the amount of pressure he puts on early. He fights Jeff Jepsen (5-2) which is a good test at his point in his young career.

Welterweight, Mark Martin (3-1)

Mark Martin doesn’t have much MMA experience but is a highly touted wrestler. Some of his accolades are Fila junior national champ, a two-time Ohio high school state champ, and a three-time D1 national qualifier from Ohio State University. There isn’t much footage out there on Martin but he’s obviously a strong wrestler. He has a good submission attack and has gone three rounds already so that looks good. He fights Tony Grant (1-1).

Bellator 242 | Friday | US

Bantamweight, Ricky Bandejas (13-3)

Ricky Bandejas is been in the cage with some stellar competition. He fought opponents like Merab Dvalishvili and Tony Gravely before signing with Bellator. He was the first to put an L on the record of James Gallagher. After suffering two straight losses to Juan Archuleta and Patchy Mix he’s now on a two-fight win streak. The book on Bandejas is that he is super aggressive, has great striking, owns good submissions, and solid takedown defense. He fights Sergio Pettis (19-5) which is an excellent fight.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwpMXBu8KOc&t=320s

Welterweight, Jason Jackson (11-4)

Jason Jackson is only coming off a single win but his last loss to Ed Ruth he arguably won as well. Jackson is a good striker who is technical with an excellent jab and a crushing right hand. This product out of the former Blackzilians gym is a very good wrestler as well being very well-rounded. He’s super athletic and seems to get better every time he fights. He fights former UFC fighter Jordan Mein (31-12) who has a bit of momentum on a two-fight win streak, though he’s been out a while.

Featherweight, Jay Jay Wilson (5-0)

Jay Jay Wilson has only been a pro for a little over two years and has been dominant. Wilson has breezed through opponents with four first-round finishes with the longest fight going a little into the second round. The Kiwi has displayed beautiful jiu-jitsu and showed once he gets the back he has a fantastic rear-naked choke. Still, there is a lot he needs to show but Wilson is someone to watch out for. He fights Tywan Claxton (6-1).

Featherweight, Tywan Claxton (6-1)

Tywan Claxton is primarily a wrestler with a background in wrestling as a Divison II All-American. He has excellent level changes and the speed behind his shots are perfect and is the reason his nickname is “Speedy.” On top is where he does his best work as his posture control is solid but it’s the constant and huge ground-and-pound he throws with elbows as well that makes him special. Claxton doesn’t play too much on the feet, but he does a great job faking the level changes and using his explosiveness and athleticism to get on the inside of his opponents. He fights Jay Jay Wilson (5-0).

Bantamweight, Raufeon Stots (13-1)

Raufeon Stots is a former NCAA Division II national champion in wrestling at the University of Nebraska-Kearney. The only loss on his MMA record came to current UFC fighter Merab Dvalishvili. Since that defeat, Stots got back on board with four consecutive wins and is one of the best bantamweight prospects today. Stots is a fantastic wrestler but his stand-up has come along nicely with some good Muay Thai and a developing jab. Still, the Roufusport product is primarily a wrestler. His timing on his shots is excellent and the execution is perfect. It’s going to take a good fighter to beat Stots and to neutralize his wrestling. He fights undefeated Cass Bell (5-0) but I think Stots is better everywhere.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6VZNGnoxi0&t=1s

Welterweight: Mark Lemminger (10-1)

Mark Lemminger is a wrestling based fighter, and he’s a high level one at that, excelling on the regional scene. He is a physical powerhouse once he gets control in the clinch. He ragdolls guys, making it look like a professional wrestling match the way he slings opponents around. He doesn’t just rely on strength, on his takedowns he uses solid technique as well including inside trip takedowns, outside trip takedowns, and sweeping the legs out on his opponents – all beautifully done. On top, he has fight-ending ground and pound, staying active and always throwing while keeping full control. On the feet, Lemminger doesn’t usually stay striking, as he usually initiates the clinch, but he is getting better and better. He does hit hard, wobbling, and even dropping his opponents, but he needs a lot of refining. He fights Jake Smith (7-3) who is taking this fight on short notice.

Shooto Brasil | Sunday | Brazil

Strawweight, Valesca Machado (7-1)

Valesca Machado is a striker-first type of fighter. She’s more of a brawler, as she plants her feet and throws wide looping right and left hooks. Not just a brawler though — she is technical and shows that the more as she gets loose in the fight. Machado employs her kicks frequently. She actively attacks the lead leg of her opponent, going to the inside and outside mixing it up. She’s only 25-years-old so she still has a lot of room for growth. She fights Karen Thalita (2-1) who is coming off a loss.

With Bellator 242 just around the corner, the fighters from Friday’s card made one last appearance.
The actual weigh-in took place Friday morning, with all but one fighter making weight. That was Jay Jay Wilson, whose fight with Tywan Claxton will move forward. Wilson, however, will be a little lighter in the pocketbook after coming in heavy on the scale. He’ll cough up 20% of his purse, after weighing in (on the second attempt) at 147.9lbs.

Full weigh-in results and a gallery of highlights from the ceremonial weigh-in and face-offs can be found below.
