Prior to that, he ventured into boxing, where he suffered back-to-back high-profile losses against Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.

After recently parting ways with the PFL, Ngannou turned to the destination many expected, joining MVP’s Rousey vs. Carano card.

“While the world was busy talking, I was busy evolving,” Ngannou said in a statement.

“Silence shouldn’t be mistaken for absence, it’s the sound of a predator closing the distance. Stepping back into the cage isn’t just a return; it’s a reclamation. My return to MMA demanded a stage that matched the scale of my ambition, and partnering with MVP to bring this event to Netflix ensures the entire world is watching. I am ready for this new chapter, and I cannot wait to entertain my fans again and remind the world exactly who I am and what I am capable of delivering on a highest stage.”

Lins (18-5) has not fought since UFC 299 in 2024 where he beat Ion Cutelaba by decision.

“To be part of the first MMA event on Netflix is going to be amazing. I’m excited, very, very, very excited,” said Philipe Lins.

“I’m very happy and grateful to God for giving me this opportunity and for being with the right people to take care of my MMA career. MVP, Netflix, and Dominance MMA made this happen. I’m very happy to be fighting on this card with so many legends. Ronda Rousey, Gina Carano, Francis Ngannou, we’re going to make history, and to be a part of this moment is amazing to me.”

MVP: Rousey vs Carano takes place on May 16 at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, CA. It will broadcast live on Netflix.

“I (asked) to fight again in UFC Rio. Since 2011 I (haven’t fought) in my country. I love to fight there,” Lins told reporters including Cageside Press at his post-fight scrum.

“Let’s see what’s going to happen with my foot, and my next opponent…I don’t have a name right here, but I want to fight one ranked guy. I will be ready for the big challenges.”

Lins (18-5) employed a heavy calf-kick game plan destroying Cutelaba’s lead leg early, but the Moldovian fighter still came after him during the fight.

“He’s very tough, Cutelaba, very tough opponent. I catch him with a very good calf kicks. Oh my gosh and he’s still coming, but he surprised me with this bro,” Lins said.

Later in the fight Lins switched to a heavy grappling approach. Many assumed that it was due to his foot being hurt, but he had thought of grappling when planning for the fight.

“That was strategy. I’m a complete fighter. I throw punches, I love boxing, like wrestling. I’m a guy coming from Jiu Jitsu,” he said.

“It’s a MMA fight. I’m always want to show my work at all martial arts.”

Light heavyweights Ion Cutelaba and Philipe Lins were the final fight of the UFC 299 early preliminary card in Miami on Saturday, in a fight that had originally been scheduled for last October.

That initial match-up had fallen through the day of the fight, and it was clear the pair were ready to finally settle business, following a heated face-off during Friday’s UFC 299 ceremonial weigh-ins. But then, when is Ion Cutelaba not heated?

Round 1 Lins came out with an obvious game plan of landing calf kicks like they were running out of style. Cutelaba’s lead leg was very compromised early so the Moldovian went into aggressive mode and rocked Lins with heavy shots. Lins survived getting dropped and continues to pushing Cutelaba’s left leg with calf kicks.

Round 2 began with Lins going back to that calf kick and Cutelaba clearly in pain because of it. After a few more kicks Cutelaba went into destroyer mode knowing he was running out of time because of the calf.

Eventually Lins was able to get the takedown which may have helped Cutelaba a bit in terms of dealing with the lead leg. After some a playful chat Lins dropped some heavy shots on Cutelaba who scrambled to his feet.

Round 3 Cutelaba clearly needed a finish with the amount of damage he suffered throughout the fight. Lins began to get real tired and tried to land more calf kicks, but Cutelaba was in his face and landing.

Lins must have felt he had the fight won because he changed his strategy to throwing whatever he needed to in order to shoot the takedown and slow the pace. He kept that going until the horn sounded.

Official Result: Philipe Lins def. Ion Cutelaba via Unanimous Decision (29-28×3)

A promising light heavyweight fight was the victim of a last minute cancellation at UFC Vegas 80 on Saturday.

Originally booked as the featured preliminary card bout of the Fight Night event, Philipe Lins vs. Ion Cutelaba was scratched at the eleventh hour, the result of Lins withdrawing due to medical issues.

UFC officials announced the news during the UFC Vegas 80 broadcast, noting they had waited til the last moment to reveal the news in the hopes the fight would remain intact. The Underground’s John Morgan was first to report news of the change.

While the exact nature of Philipe Lins’ withdrawal was not announced, the UFC Vegas 80 broadcast team including Paul Felder and Daniel Cormier speculated that the issue might be mental. The pullout is the second last-minute withdrawal for Lins in roughly a year; he has also seen numerous fights fall through since arriving in the UFC from the PFL a few years back.

UFC Vegas 80 moves forward with ten fights as a result, some of which are already in the books. The full card breaks down as follows:

Since moving down to light heavyweight in 2022, Philipe Lins (17-5) has won three fights in a row, and will be looking to make it four with a win over Ion Cutelaba this Saturday at UFC Vegas 80.

Lins’ last loss came against Tanner Boser back in 2020, and from there he didn’t compete again until April 2022. In that two year span, he was booked six separate times, but each time the fight fell through due to injuries to the Brazilian.

At the UFC Vegas 80 media day, “Monstro” admitted that during that time he had a lot of problems, including family problems that kept him out of the Octagon.

“I had a lot of problems, family problems, injuries, personal problems but I won over everything and put my mind in place and just kept going and never gave up and now I’m here doing what I love and it’s always a pleasure to be here and I’m ready to put on a statement.”

His opponent for this one, Cutelaba, bounced back from a three fight losing skid last time out, with a win over Tanner Boser. Not so long ago, the Moldovan was sitting inside the top 15 rankings at light heavyweight, and Lins realizes that the fight is a big opportunity for him due to the name value of “The Hulk.”

“It’s a great opportunity to fight him, he’s a great name and a former ranked guy, but I’m ready, I’m ready for the challenge and it doesn’t matter what he’s doing or what he does best. I’ve said this fight has two ingredients, gasoline and fire and everyone knows when this was put together what will happen.”

Light heavyweight action kicked off the UFC Vegas 74 card on Saturday, as Maxim Grishin and former PFL heavyweight champ Philipe Lins threw down.

Lins opened the action with a low kick, then went over the top with a heavy punch to back his fellow PFL alum up. Grishin fought off a takedown attempt, getting his back off the cage. That gave Grishin chance to walk Lins down, but it was Lins firing first when they did come together. In another clinch situation, Grishin landed a few foot stops; Lins reversed, dropped down for a takedown, couldn’t get it, and found himself reversed back around before they moved off the fence.

Round two opened with the pair immediately going to the fence, Lins in control. That would be a theme throughout the round, though Grishin proved able to defend the Brazilian’s takedown attempts. At distance, things were a little more even, and through two rounds, not a lot of significant damage had been done.

The final minute of the second round saw Grishin finding success with leg kicks, while Lins worked the body with his jab.

Again in round three, Lins drove his opponent up against the fence. But as had been the case in the opening two rounds, Grishin was able to stay upright and stall Lins, leading to a warning from the ref, who appeared to consider restarting the action. Instead, the pair moved off the cage, but didn’t stay out in the open long, with Lins again pressing Lins up against the fence. Another warning from the ref ensued, but the rest of the fight would play out there, with Lins edging the grappling battle and mixing in a bit of striking despite being unable to take Grishin down.

Las Vegas, NV — Like a “bear coming out of hibernation” is how Philipe Lins described himself ahead of UFC Vegas 69.

He looked very much the part of a predator in the cage with Ovince Saint Preux, storming out of the gate, charging at OSP and overwhelming him with strikes.

“Yeah for sure. I did talk about this in one interview. I’m like a bear who’s hungry,” Lins (16-5) told media outlets including Cageside Press. “The bear spends a long time hibernating, when he wakes up, [nobody can] stay in front of him.”

“At this fight, I’m like a bear. When I smelled blood, I went in there and knocked out my opponent.”

Lins’ bear analogy goes a little deeper than just charging at his opponent and mauling him in the cage. He went through a hibernation period of sorts, one that saw a number of fights fall through.

“Too much drama, too many problems. A lot of fights cancelled,” Lins said in regards to that stretch. Some fights were cancelled because of health, others saw opponents pull out of the fight. Sometimes, that was about health too. “For me, it was my time hibernating. I’m kidding sometimes that my nickname switched from ‘Monstro’ to ‘Drama Fighter,’ but I said after this fight, it’s going to be back to ‘Monstro.’ I’m ‘Monstro’ again.”

Lins believes that with the OSP win, he’s turned a corner. And he’s looking to stay busy. “This is what I’m looking for, to me more consistent. I want to do more— two or maybe three fights this year, and I want to be more consistent for sure.”

A date in the spring appeals to the Brazilian, who trains in Florida with American Top Team. “I’m going to fight before the summer, here. Maybe May. May is a good date. And after summer, like September or October, I want to fight again.”

While he doesn’t have an opponent in mind, Lins knows what he wants. “I don’t have a name, but I want top 15. I’m ready for the challenge. A big challenge.”

Following his fight with OSP, Lins dropped to his knees and pounded his fists on the octagon floor. That was the moment hitting him.

“Yes for sure. A victory over Ovince Saint Preux is a very good step at my goals in the UFC organization. For sure, it’s a very good win for me. Right now, I’m feeling like I proved a I deserve to be here, I deserve my contract. I deserve to be here at the big show.”

A light heavyweight who had occasionally fought at heavyweight faced off with a heavyweight who had moved to light heavyweight when Ovince Saint Preux faced off with Philipe Lins at UFC Vegas 69.

Lins had dropped to 205lbs last time out, making his return to the division with a win over Marcin Prachnio last April. The Brazilian was best known for winning the 2018 PFL heavyweight tournament, however.

Saint Preux entered the fight off a win over Shogun Rua, after coming up short against Tanner Boser in a heavyweight scrap. Speaking of Shogun, OSP also tied the Brazilian legend for UFC appearances on Saturday, after a decade in the promotion.

Saint Preux opened with a probing kick, which was followed by Lins landing a straight left hand. OSP was almost immediately backpedalling, clearly hurt and covering up. Philipe Lins, meanwhile, began unloading, throwing everything but the kitchen sink. Lefts, rights, straights, hooks, the kitchen sink might actually have been thrown in there. Somehow, Saint Preux managed to survive, covering up and circling out of harm’s way.

That didn’t last long, however. Lins went right after him, and soon enough, Ovince Saint Preux went crashing down to the canvas. Lins simply overwhelmed him.

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try booking the fight again. That’s the path the UFC is taking with Ovince Saint Preux and Philipe Lins, who now have a new date as part of the promotion’s February 18, 2023 Fight Night event.

MMA Fighting was first to report the news. Cageside Press confirmed the booking with a source familiar with the situation.

Saint Preux (26-16) and Lins were originally expected to face off on in November 2021, only for OSP to pull out of the fight. They were booked again as part of UFC 282 earlier this month; this time, it was Lins who was forced to withdraw.

Ovince Saint Preux, meanwhile, never did fight on the December 10 card, after a full three opponents fell through. Fingers crossed he gets his fight this time.

OSP last competed in May, winning a split decision against the legendary Shogun Rua. The win snapped a two-fight skid, with one of those match-ups coming at heavyweight against Tanner Boser. The other came against current 205lb title contender Jamahal Hill.

Lins, a former PFL heavyweight champ, made the move to light heavyweight earlier this year, picking up a win over Marcin Prachnio. That fight was his first win, and first action, since back-to-back losses to heavyweights Andrei Arlovski and Tanner Boser in 2020. The Brazilian then saw no fewer than six fights fall through between 2020 and the Prachio fight, and another handful fall apart in the months since.

The UFC’s February 18, 2023 event is due for the Apex in Las Vegas with the following fights reported thus far:

Taila Santos vs. Erin Blanchfield

Gabriel Benitez vs. Jim Miller

William Knight vs. Marcin Prachino

Themba Gorimbo vs. Billy Goff

Evan Elder vs. Nazim Sadykhov

Benoit Saint-Denis vs. Joe Solecki

Juancamilo Ronderos vs. Clayton Carpenter

Abus Magomedov vs. Gerald Meerschaert

Philipe Lins vs. Ovince Saint Preux

During Saturday’s UFC Vegas 61 broadcast, promotion officials announced that a medical issue had caused the card to be shuffled, pushing Grishin vs. Lins to the main card to give one of the fighters more time to overcome the ailment. No such luck, as the fight was cancelled.

The nature of the medical issue in question was not revealed.

The light heavyweight affair had seen both fighters coming in off victories in their last outing.

As a result of the cancellation, UFC Vegas 61 wound up running with 11 fights. it’s the second hit for the Fight Night card, which also lost Jessica Penne vs. Tabatha Ricci prior to Friday’s official weigh-in.
