We’ve got all the highlights from the second event of the PFL 2019 season!

The Professional Fighters League was back in action this past week with PFL 2 for the 2019 season (that’s PFL 13 if you include the league’s inaugural season). On the card were lightweights and featherweights, including Steven Siler, Andre Harrison, and last season’s 145lb winner Lance Palmer. All three could figure big in the PFL 2019 season.

The end result? Both Harrison and Palmer picked up victories, though Siler went down by was of decision early in the night. Natan Schulte, the surprise standout at lightweight from a year ago, also picked up an important win over Yincang Bao – a first round submission, earning him six points in the tournament.

Lightweight Rashid Magomedov looked excellent at PFL 2 2019, defeating Loik Radzhabov by decision. What’s even more impressive, is that he fought while fasting for Ramadan.

Uniondale, NY – Rashid Magomedov, a lightweight finalist from Season 1 of PFL, notched his first victory of the 2019 season with a clean decision victory over Loik Radzhabov. The Russian earned three points and set the stage for a run at the lightweight championship in 2019.

Magomedov took a defensive approach to the fight, utilizing slick counter-punches and trips to slow the aggressive advance of Radzhabov. Not only did Radzhabov’s output take Magomedov by surprise, but his toughness as well.

“I was planning on taking him down more than I did, but he started fighting more in the stand-up, so I had to strike with him. I didn’t expect him to be as aggressive as he was. I thought he would wrestle with me but he wanted to strike the whole fight. He surprised me because I thought I would punch him and he would go back a bit. But he was moving forward constantly and that surprised me.”

Magomedov, who normally trains at American Top Team in Florida, had to adjust his training camp for this fight due to Ramadan. During Ramadan, Muslims must fast from dawn until sunset, which understandably makes training very difficult.

“Because of the holy month of Ramadan, I was fasting. In the US, the gyms only work in the daytime. So in Dagestan, I was fasting during the day, then at night, I was preparing for the fight,” Magomedov continued, “It’s a little bit harder, especially in the beginning, but you get used to it. In the daytime, I was fasting then training at night. So I did two training sessions during the night. It’s difficult in the beginning, but I’ve practiced it a lot, it’s not my first year [in the sport].”

Lastly, a rib injury last year pulled the former UFC contender from a bout in the PFL regular season, but he was still able to make it to the finals. The injury never quite fully healed though.

“It is better than it was last season, but I still feel some pain so I have to go to the doctor and he will check.”

Hopefully, that injury will not turn into anything serious because Magomedov is easily one of the most talented fighters on the PFL roster.

Natan Schulte’s second season in PFL started off swimmingly with a first-round submission, and he hopes to continue improving throughout the season.

Uniondale, NY – Natan Schulte won the lightweight tournament in the first season of PFL. This season, he’s looking to showcase that no one will be able to stop him from doubling up his million-dollar winnings. He started off strong with a first round rear-naked choke victory to earn six points in the standings.

“I’m happy to be back, happy to finish the fight in the first round. I know I have a big target on my back. Last year, nobody knew me. Now I’m the champion. People will be studying my game, watching fights, watching footage of myself. But I want to evolve as much as I can between fights. So people can study, people can have an idea of what I want, but when we’re inside the cage, things are going to be different. I will try to bring as much diversity as I can and I’m training for that.”

Schulte hopes to show that he is the most complete fighter in the division, and got to do so at PFL 2 2019, rocking Bao Yincang on the feet before submitting him.

“My game is a lot of judo, wrestling, combined with a Thai and jiu-jitsu game. I don’t want to lose positions on the ground. I want to be better and better on the ground. Combined with my takedowns from judo and from wrestling that’s pretty much going to lead the path this season. Obviously, I have a complete game and feel comfortable everywhere, but this is my bread and butter.”

American Top Team has been flourishing and Schulte is part of the team’s great success in the world of MMA recently. It’s the exact right place for Schulte as looks to continue to round out his game in search of a second title.

“I think American Top Team is one of the best, if not the best, gyms in the world right now. I have full support from all the coaches. My main coach is Marcos DaMatta Parrumpa, I have my striking coach Luciano dos Santos as well as Katel Kubis so they put everything together for me strategy-wise. They tighten up my game, not only on the ground, but also stand up so I feel comfortable. And training with all of our training partners. We have so many. It’s too much for me to tell but it’s so diverse. I have wrestlers, I have strikers, I have jiu-jitsu guys, I have brawlers, I have southpaws, I have orthodox, I have everybody. Everything I have at American Top Team. So I feel pretty safe saying that we’re the best.”

After their controversial decision in the semifinals last year, Chris Wade has had a lot to say about Natan Schulte. The Brazilian is taking the high road, and simply focusing on winning fights.

“He’s talking a lot about me, but my goal is not Chris Wade, my goal is a million dollars again and another belt. If we cross paths again, I will do my best, like I did twice in the past, to beat him. I’m going to watch his fights, like I’m watching all the fights, so I can have a good understanding of all my opponents, but Chris Wade’s not my goal. I cannot control what he says. He dreams about me, he talks about me, good for him. My goal is another belt and a million dollars.”

When asked what he’d do with $2 million, the translator interjected to say, “he doesn’t [spend money], that’s the problem.” Schulte proved that point by adding, “I’m going to try to invest in the market and make more money. I’m going to make my money work for me.

Lance Palmer has a target on his back after winning the featherweight championship in the first season of PFL. He proved he is not to be messed with after a one-sided victory against Alex Gilpin.

Uniondale, NY – Lance Palmer headlined the second card of the PFL 2019 season and delivered with a 15-minute domination of Alex Gilpin. After the victory, Palmer reflected on the division as a whole and his performance.

“Overall, tonight, I felt like I did a great job my first fight back in the new season. Coming back as a champion from last season. Going against a guy who isn’t well-known but he showed his toughness and he showed that he belongs here, as did many of the other featherweights tonight. It’s good to have all the competition that we saw tonight in the featherweight division for season two. When it comes down to it, when you win at the end of the year, you want to know that you went through the best of the best to get there. I’m excited to see how the rest of the season begins to play out. There were some crazy knockouts, some guys that lost tonight like [Steven] Siler who was a finalist last year but lost a decision tonight. I’m sure he’ll be back. He’s a guy that’s super tough. [Andre] Harrison got a win tonight, which was great. As a veteran of the PFL, guys like Harrison, Siler… [Alexandre] Almeida missed weight, so that hurts him in the points a bit. When it comes down to it, there are a lot of good guys who showed they belong here tonight. So I had to try and prove myself tonight. I didn’t get the finish like I wanted to but I feel that I showed my dominance.”

Palmer is primarily a wrestler, but he’s adding new tools in his effort to capture a second PFL title. That was showcased when he knocked down Gilpin in the first round of the contest.

“I was super excited because [Mark Henry] always tells me, ‘Throw more than two punches, the first two punches aren’t always going to land. You have to throw the combos because the third, fourth, fifth punch that’s going to land when they’re not ready. After I missed the first two punches as he took his head back, I landed the overhand. We’ve only been working together for seven weeks too. It’s like, this is what we’ve worked on in his basement. The whole time through this camp, he’s been saying, ‘Just like on the pads. Just like on the pads.’ Just letting my hands go. I know I have power, so it’s not like I need to throw hard punches. It’s just getting more comfortable throwing those combos, keeping my stance where it needs to be. When I landed that, he recovered really well with it, but I knew this is exactly what I wanted out of this transition to start working with Mark Henry. So you’re going to keep seeing more and more of that, and hopefully some finishes on the feet as well. Obviously, my bread and butter is on the ground, and he did a good job at defending the back when I had the back. And he had good hand control in there so I wasn’t able to get the rear-naked choke. He was a tough opponent. I was very happy with being able to drop him with that combo.”

A big change “The Party” has made is moving to Nick Catone MMA in New Jersey under respected coach Mark Henry. That change looks to be paying dividends and Palmer explained how it all came together.

“It was something that I wanted to do last year. I originally moved from Team Alpha Male in 2017 back to Columbus, Ohio. My wife and I are both from Ohio so I wanted to plant our roots in Columbus. I talked to Ali [Abdelaziz] about moving to Jersey in 2017. But once I found out that Timur Valiev was going to be in our season last year, it wasn’t going to work because we were both the same weight at the time because they didn’t do a bantamweight division. It was actually a blessing in disguise though, because I got to meet the guys that coached me all of last year out in Vegas at 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu like Coach Casey [Halstead] and Coach Casey is still with me now. We’re going to ride this until the wheels fall off. All the guys I’ve met in Vegas, Joseph Benavidez is one of my best friends, and it kind of got sparked because I stayed with him for a week or two out there. Then I rolled through and did my first camp out there last year. Then second and third and we just rolled through the whole season there. But the main reason I moved to New Jersey was to be closer to home. Jersey to Ohio is a lot closer than Vegas to Ohio whether you’re flying or driving. That was the main thing. I have a good relationship with Frankie [Edgar], obviously Marlon [Moraes], we fought on a lot of the same cards when it was World Series of Fighting. So I already had a little relationship with Mark [Henry] and Ricardo [Almeida]. It was just something where I think we blend really well together. Frankie is one of the best striker grappler combos of mixing up his punching and his wrestling. That’s something that I’ve always admired about Frankie. And he’s a product of Mark, so that’s why.”

Palmer has noticed a trend of opponents trying to pressure him. However, that’s only come back to bite them. The same thing happened in this fight.

“I feel like in a lot of my fights, like last year, the very first fight of the season when I fought [Bekbulat] Magomedov, he started coming towards me and he actually shot on me when I got the takedown to set up the finish last year. And then Jumabieke [Tuerxun] in the second fight of last year, which was actually here in July, he shot on me and I got the takedown and the finish. I was trying to see, since Gilpin has more of a wrestling base, if he was going to throw that overhand and set up a shot and try and use that to get to the legs so I can get a scramble to get on top. But once I saw that the combos were going to be open and that inside leg kick was going to be open. His pressure was not really helping him in my opinion. But maybe that was his gameplan and he didn’t have any other option.”

PFL 2 2019 was another hometown fight for Andre Harrison, as he was 15 minutes away from his hometown when he dominated Peter Petties to take home a decision victory.

Uniondale, NY – Andre Harrison got the job done at PFL 2 2019, utilizing heavy top control to defeat Peter Petties and earn three points. What made it even better was doing it so close to home. Unlike his Long Island counterpart Chris Wade, Harrison was pleased with his outing.

“Overall, I think I could have been more active in certain areas. But you can say anything from the outside looking in. But when you’re in there, things go differently. I did what I needed to do to make sure I secured the win, pushed the action where I could have and went from there.”

Fighting at home has its benefits and issues. “The Bull” experience both on fight night.

“I don’t know how many of you in here competed or anything like that, but the day of the fight, after you weigh-in, you’re so happy and excited because you get to rehydrate and eat again after not doing so for however long. But after you do all that, you’re just waiting around for the fight to happen. While you’re sitting there, so many thoughts go through your head. It’s the worst thing ever. Especially when you’re home. When you’re on away, yeah, you’re on TV and everyone can watch you and everything. But it’s a whole different ballgame walking out there and seeing people you know that you haven’t seen in years or they have kids that look up to you. It’s a whole different ballgame. It definitely adds a bit of pressure, but in times where you need to man up or muscle up and do what you need to do, it definitely helps as well.”

The wrestling-first gameplan may not have been very appealing to viewers, but Harrison was certainly not trying to make it lackluster.

“While we were down there and hand-fighting, there were a couple of times when he grabbed my wrist from awkward angles. If you look at the first round, there were a couple of times where I was trying to jerk my hand out, I just couldn’t get it away. It’s not like I just wanted to lay there. If you’re on top of somebody with good position, you want to hit him. He comes from a good camp too. It’s not like he’s just some scrub who happened to walk in. He knows what he’s doing in there.”

Harrison started his career off marvelously at 20-0, but came up short in the semifinals last season to eventual champion Lance Palmer. That first taste of defeat has added fuel to his fire.

“Motivated. Last year didn’t end the way I wanted it to end so this year I have to do everything I can to make sure it ends the way I think it should end.”

The Bellmore Kickboxing product was incredibly close to getting a bonus point late in the third round when he nearly sunk in a rear-naked choke. Unfortunately, Petties slipped out, leaving Harrison with three points in the standings.

“You saw how deep that choke was huh? That’s going to be on my mind this whole time. Originally, I don’t know if he turned the wrong way or if he just turned halfway and just stopped, but it just slipped right under and I went to go get it, but by that time he had already gone back down to the mat and it was over.”

Chris Wade had to work a bit harder than expected to defeat Nate Andrews in the co-main event of PFL 2 2019, and he’ll use that as motivation to come out even better next time around.

Uniondale, NY – Chris Wade was a semifinalist last season in PFL, coming up short to eventual champion Natan Schulte in what was a controversial decision. Wade was matched up with submission specialist Nate Andrews to start his 2019 campaign in front of a home crowd on Long Island. While he came away with three points, it wasn’t the performance that Wade wanted.

“I’m happy that it was a better start than last season was. Last season in Chicago we came away with nothing. This season we came away with three points. Whenever I’m here fighting at home, I feel, not pressure, but I just know that a lot people come here to watch and come here to see me and I want to do something spectacular for them that they’ll remember and talk about for a long time. Not being able to get a finish… I’m hard on myself so that’s going to eat at me a little bit.”

As to what exactly bothered him about the decision victory, it came down to utilizing the wrong type of takedown attempts and burning energy in the first round.

“I told my corner I wasted, threw away, a ton of juice trying to take him down of the cage early on. I was thinking I was going to ragdoll him down and I wasn’t able to get him to leave his feet. Especially early on. It just wasn’t a smart tactic for me. He started pushing my head away quite a bit, creating a lot of separation. I wound up fighting myself in way more than I should have. I should have broke loose and went back to striking. Stubbornness. Sometimes the wrestler in me goes, ‘Oh yeah? I can’t take you down? I can take you down here.’ I wound up having to go back to shots. You can’t waste energy like that in a fight. I would have been so much better off just standing and striking and not even trying to put him on the cage. It was just a big mistake. Luckily I didn’t pay for it with a loss.”

Wade expected to run through Andrews, but ended up competing with a much craftier opponent than expected.

“He does that snake thing. He’s got… how many submissions? Seven in a row? We knew he was going to be really crafty and able to sink chokes left and right. So I had people on my back the whole camp. I wasn’t necessarily worried about that part of things. In the beginning, that’s what led me to stay upright more with him. I didn’t want to shoot underneath and get in those choke scenarios. I just regret it because every shot I took after that I scored a takedown. I would have wasted much less juice. Just stick to what works.”

The crowd was roaring for Wade, who hails from Islip, New York, which is about a 40-minute drive to the Nassau Coliseum. Having that support was huge for Wade on fight night.

“I can hear it. Even before the fight, I’m looking left and right and I know somebody. They’re making eye contact with me, starting to get crazy, it’s amping me up. I really think that on a night like tonight where I didn’t feel like I had necessarily everything that I’d have on my best nights, that they kind of willed me through what I felt was a really tough fight with a guy that was relatively unknown to me that was really game for the fight. I didn’t get to see very much on him. But just having that energy in the building knowing my family is here, my friends are here, and I can’t let them down. It just makes me think that I’m not quitting them, I’m winning this fight, 100-percent. It was probably the difference maker.”

PFL President Ray Sefo spoke to media after the lightweights and featherweights performed at PFL 2 2019, having kind words for the fighters, but not for one of the referees.

Uniondale, NY – The first three events of PFL’s second season are taking place on Long Island in the Nassau Coliseum. The second of which occurred yesterday. It was an exciting 10-fight card with huge finishes and great performances across the featherweight and lightweight divisions.

PFL President Ray Sefo was very pleased with what he saw from the lightest weight classes in his promotion, as he noted in his post-fight press conference.

“I thought everyone came out to finish and came out to fight. You put fights together and you hope things fall together. I thought that everybody fought well. Sometimes you match certain guys together and one might be a little bit advanced in certain areas. That’s the beautiful thing about MMA is that there are so many ways you can win. Either your wrestling, jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, boxing. We saw a lot of that tonight. So we’re really happy with the outcome of the show tonight.”

The card was headlined by a slew of wrestlers, with Season 1 champion Lance Palmer in the main event, and Long Island native Chris Wade in the co-main. The expectations were high for them, and they both passed with flying colors.

“I thought they fought well. Lance Palmer was matched up against Alex Gilpin. I knew putting that fight together that it would be a very interesting fight, but at the same time, it would be a back-and-forth thing. But once Lance landed the big overhand left, that started to change the fight and he dominated from there on the ground. Chris Wade came out and the guy he had, Nate [Andrews], he’s one of those guys where if you’re not careful, he could easily hurt you in stand up or take you down and submit you. So he had to be very careful. I thought everyone was very evenly matched. Some guys came out and put on amazing finishes. Other guys, the fights were back-and-forth. All in all, it was good.”

The scariest moment of the night came early on in the card, as Movlid Khaybulaev knocked out Damon Jackson with a huge flying knee just 10 seconds into the fight. Jackson was able to walk off under his own power, and Sefo gave an update on his condition.

“I believe his CAT scan came back. Everything’s okay, so he’ll be good. But I’m not sure exactly what his suspension will be from the commission. I have to double check that and take it from there. I’m assuming he’s going to be okay.”

While the playoffs are merit-based in PFL, the regular season requires some tact when putting together fights. Sefo explained that process and the motives behind it.

“It’s just matchmaking. As you know, there are 12 guys, 12 fighters per division. The women’s division is a little different there are only eight there. So if six guys come through and have points, I have to match two fights of two losers against each other so that we get eight guys that make it to the playoffs. So it’s all about matching the right fights. Obviously, the biggest thing is matching the right fights so it’s entertaining for the fans. You match fights and you hope it goes the way you think it’s going to go. There are certain times when fighters have to revert back to a strength to control the fight. Some fights are going to be amazingly exciting and some fights are not going to be like that. But that’s the fight game.”

Long Islander Andre Harrison had a main card slot, and dominated Peter Petties with his wrestling. While Sefo didn’t mind the fight itself, he was not happy with the third man in the cage.

“The referee did a horrible job. Listen, Andre is a guy who’s been a champion before. He was one of the semifinalists last year. But I thought that fight should have at least been stood up to sort of restart because I thought both of them were laying around doing nothing. It wasn’t them. The referee is the one that controls the fight. I just thought the referee let it be a stalemate for as long as it did.”

Lance Palmer went to his bread and butter to kick off his season at PFL 2 2019, wrestling Alex Gilpin with ease to earn three points.

Lance Palmer is coming off a Season 1 championship victory, so he’s looking to double his million dollars in the second season of PFL. Palmer was a two-time WSOF featherweight champion before the promotion transitioned to PFL. He’s been on a six-fight win streak since the change, earning the second seed in the featherweight bracket last year. Palmer, who now trains at Nick Catone MMA alongside Frankie Edgar, Eddie Alvarez, and Marlon Moraes, dominated top seed Steven Siler to win the championship.

Alex Gilpin is a highly-touted prospect from Wisconsin with a 12-1 record. He is coming off a D’Arce choke victory on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series that was not enough to earn a contract with the big show. Gilpin is on a seven-fight win streak, stopping six of those fighters.

Alex Gilpin blitzed Lance Palmer with a combination to kick off the final bout of the evening. Anorther blitzing combination sent Palmer backpedaling to the fence. Palmer tried for a takedown, but Gilpin avoided cleanly. Palmer tucked his chin and fired heavy hooks. One caught Gilpin and dropped him. Palmer quickly pounced on his back and worked for a choke. Gilpin defended well, but gave up full mount. Palmer postured up and Gilpin was able to sneak out into guard. Palmer ended the round on top.

The fighters traded kicks to start the second round, and Palmer shot for a takedown that Gilpin defended. Gilpin caught Palmer with a glancing hook, then drove Gilpin to the canvas to get his first takedown of the fight. Palmer was working from guard, landing some ground-and-pound. Gilpin was able to stand up then slammed Palmer to the canvas to end the round.

Palmer was no nonsense in the final round, getting a takedown into guard immediately. Palmer passed to half guard soon after, but Gilpin worked his way back. The fight returned to the feet momentarily before Palmer scored another takedown. Gilpin gave a lot of effort, but Palmer had him pinned down for the remainder of the fight.

Lance Palmer def. Alex Gilpin by Unanimous Decision (30-27 x3)

Chris Wade had a tougher time than he expected against Nate Andrews at PFL 2 2019, scrapping his way to a unanimous decision.

Chris Wade is out for vengeance this season. His run as the fourth seed ended in the semifinals following a controversial decision loss to eventual champion, Natan Schulte. With that decision fueling him, he’s looking to leave no doubt as to who the best 155er in PFL is. Wade was 5-2 in the UFC, falling to Dagestani beasts Rustam Khabilov and Islam Makhachev.

Nate Andrews is 35-years-old but is on quite an impressive run heading into the second season of PFL. “The Snake” is 15-1 with all but one of his fights taking place in the New England promotion CES. Andrews has defended the promotion’s lightweight title twice and has submitted his last seven opponents, knocking out the previous two.

Chris Wade got fancy to start this fight, throwing a jumping switch kick among other head kicks. Wade got a clinch and drove Andrews to the cage. Wade worked hard for double-underhooks, but Andrews would not fall. Andrews was able to separate, then caught Wade with a combination. A head kick landed for Andrews, then Wade drove him down for the first time in the fight. The round ended with Wade in full guard.

Andrews caught a head kick to start the second round, then landed a right hand. Wade was pushed towards the fence with a knee, sparking a clinch. Following their separation, Wade drove him down with another double leg. Andrews was incredibly active on his back (his seven straight submissions are evidence of that), but Wade was having none of it. Andrews sat up against the fence and avoided a guillotine from the Long Islander, eventually standing up. Wade still had him pinned against the cage though. Andrews tried for a kimura, but it only led to a takedown for Wade. Andrews was able to get top position to close out the round.

Andrews was giving Wade trouble in this fight, pushing forward on the feet and forcing Wade to the fence. The Long Islander ate a knee to the body, but was able to score another takedown. Andrews worked his way up, then took Wade down, taking the back of his opponent. Wade slipped through the back door and took the back of Andrews, nearly sinking in the rear-naked choke. Andrews spun out into guard, then swept to take the back of Wade with under 30 seconds left. Wade survived with Andrews on his back, taking a hard-fought decision.

Chris Wade def. Nate Andrews by Unanimous Decision (29-28 x2, 30-27)

Andre Harrison started his season the right way at PFL 2 2019, pinning Peter Petties to the canvas with ease to earn a unanimous decision.

Andre Harrison got off to a great start in his career, going 16-0 with four defenses of the Titan FC featherweight title and a WSOF title victory over Lance Palmer before the inaugural PFL season. “The Bull” was the third seed in last year’s tournament and reached the semi-finals, where he was defeated for the first time in his career in a rematch with the eventual champion Palmer. The Long Island native will be fighting at home in this one.

Peter Petties is 8-4 in his career, winning his last two fights. The Lloyd Irvin fighter appeared on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series in 2017, losing to Julio Arce, who is currently 3-1 in the UFC.

Andre Harrison started the fight as the aggressor, taking the center of the cage as the fighters traded range-finding strikes. Harrison bullrushed Peter Petties into the cage and scored a takedown, moving into side control quickly. Petties had no answer for the strong top control of the Long Islander, who rode out the round in side control.

Petties was able to avoid the first takedown attempt of the second round, then landed a hard body kick. Harrison then caught a flying knee and slammed Petties down against the cage. Harrison moved to half guard and was content to stay there as long as Petties did not resist. Petties attempted to wall walk, but Harrison pinned him against the cage to ride out the round.

The fighters traded heavy hooks to start the final round, then Petties landed a combination with Harrison’s back to the cage. Petties avoided a takedown by throwing Harrison aside. Harrison rushed forward again, but Petties sprawled on him. Petties, who was very aggressive in the final round, landed a jumping body kick that Harrison turned into a clinch. Harrison was finally able to drag Petties down halfway through the final round. Harrison moved to side control at the final minute then took the back of Petties, who tried to wall walk to safety. Harrison got an arm under the neck, but couldn’t get the stoppage.

Andre Harrison def. Peter Petties by Unanimous Decision (30-27 x3)
