After an impressive rise up the ranks in the bantamweight division, Patrick Mix hit a wall in the form of Juan Archuleta at Bellator 246 on Saturday.

Entering the night undefeated, Mix lost a unanimous decision against Archuleta — and lost out on the vacant bantamweight title in the process. Archuleta is now the newly crowned champion. For Mix, (13-1), it’s back to the drawing board. Where he’ll make “a few adjustments.”

Speaking to media outlets at the Bellator 246 post-fight press conference, Mix said that “I feel like I tried to go for the finish in the first and second, used a lot of energy. I was rebuilding in the third, he came strong in the third, the fourth, and the fifth, just like I knew he would. He’s got good cardio, a good team. No excuses on my end, I was the best Patchy Mix tonight.”

The problem, however, was that Juan Archuleta “was just better than me tonight.”

In the end, “Patchy” Mix wasn’t all that surprised by the scorecards. “I felt like I won the first two, I thought maybe I could steal one, but he had more volume in those last three rounds, so I’m not surprised he got the three rounds.”

Only the 49-46 score had him shocked. “48-47, I feel, should have sufficed.”

The loss, his first in both his professional and amateur careers, should serve as a valuable lesson. “Every fight I’m going to get better. Even tonight. I don’t define myself just on this one fight, or any of my last 13, or even the 24-fight win streak,” said Mix. “I take each one at a time. I’m just trying to grow and get better each time. I’m down right now, but I’m not out.”

Saturday night was the first time Mix has gone the full 25 minutes in his career, despite being a champ outside Bellator. However, he doesn’t feel that was a factor. “I’ve trained for 25 minutes before,” he noted, before admitting that “just going out there and getting the experience was important for me too.”

But in the end, “I didn’t feel no different from the gym,” where he trains for 25 minutes or more on the regular.

Still a highly touted bantamweight prospect, the question now becomes, what does Patrick Mix do next? Asked if he’d want a quick turnaround, Mix told Cageside Press that “Whatever my coaches think. I’m healthy, I’m willing to get back into camp and keep fighting. That’s what I do anyways. I’d love to get the taste out of my mouth, but I also want to make the proper adjustments to be back. I’m not here just to be one of these guys in the middle of the pack. I want to be world champion, I want to be at the top of the list.”

Bellator’s vacant bantamweight title was on the line in the main event of Bellator 246 on Saturday night. Which represented a huge opportunity for young, rising star Patrick Mix, and a second chance for Juan Archuleta, who found himself bounced out of the featherweight grand prix earlier than hoped when he faced 145lb champ Patricio Pitbull.

The action went down at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT, on a night that saw the debut of Liz Carmouche, and the retirement of Jon Fitch.

Mix had Archuleta down in the early part of the opening round, but that wouldn’t stick. Back on the feet, “The Spaniard” stayed mobile, circling, and landed his right hand. But he wouldn’t stay up for long, with Mix again taking the fight to the ground towards the end of the frame. Locking on with a body triangle, Mix worked to get an arm under the neck, then managed to transition to mount — only for time to run out.

Round two had the duo back on the ground early, in an awkward position with Mix inverted on Archuleta’s back. Archuleta spent a good amount of time trying to free himself, landing several elbows to the legs. But Mix transitioned to the back, locking on with a body triangle again. This time, he had a full two minutes to work. But towards the end of the round Archuleta escaped and unloaded some heavy strikes from the back of Mix.

Entering the third, there was a question as to whether Mix was slowing. Archuleta was ripping his opponent to the body. His combinations had real pop, and Mix appeared caught in the headlights. The third round saw a noticeable change in the flow of the fight, with Mix pulling back on the takedown attempts. As a result, Archuleta worked a stick and move game plan, continued to work the body, and took control of the round.

Heading into the championship rounds, Archuleta appeared the fresher fighter. The fourth round featured some controversy, as a kick to a downed Mix, perfectly legal, halted the action, as Mix was given time to recover. The kick was both blocked, and clearly aimed at the body, not the head, with the ref giving Mix an undeserved reprieve. The rest of the round played out on the feet, but depending on how the round was scored, that moment could be huge.

Round five saw Archuleta continue to have the edge on the feet. And Mix no longer appeared willing or able to get the fight to the ground. He tried a jump knee that fell short. Archuleta, however, was in and out at will. Every shot to the body was adding up. They’d clinch late in the frame, but the clock was becoming a factor.

Going the distance, the judges saw it for Archuleta. He claimed gold, and celebrated with a number of in-cage black flips.

Official Result: Juan Archuleta def. Patrick Mix by unanimous decision (49-46, 48-47, 48-47)

The second of back-to-back events from Bellator MMA this weekend, Bellator 246, had fighters weight in Friday morning. And while the main event pairing of Juan Archuleta and Patrick “Patchy” Mix made weight, two fighters did not.

Archuleta and Mix, of course, are competing for the promotion’s vacant bantamweight title. A huge opportunity for both men, especially given Mix is still a rising prospect, and Archuleta not too long ago was bounced from the featherweight grand prix in a failed title bid against Patricio Pitbull.

Also on the Bellator 246 card is the debut of former UFC bantamweight and flyweight title challenger Liz Carmouche. She was set to make her debut against another promotional newcomer in UFC/Invicta FC vet DeAnna Bennett. “Vitamin D” unfortunately missed weight by a rather large margin, coming in at 131.7lbs for the flyweight affair.

Also missing weight Friday was the undefeated Keoni Diggs, who missed the lightweight limit by a pound. Both fights are expected to move forward with each fighter to be fined a portion of their purse.

Patrick “Patchy” Mix is ready for his star turn. The Jackson-Wink MMA fighter sits at 13-0, and will fight for the vacant 135lb title at Bellator 246 this weekend.

It’s rare that you’ll find a fighter still considered a prospect fighting for gold in a major promotion. But that’s the situation Mix is in as he goes up against Juan Archuleta this Saturday night. Mix has been on the radar a bit, but he’s still a relative newcomer.

Mix knows his opponent this weekend is dangerous. “I don’t think he has any weak parts of his game, I just think I’m better than him everywhere,” the undefeated fighter exclaimed during media day this week.

Patchy Mix is just one year into his Bellator MMA career, and he’s now fighting for the belt. That’s nothing new to him, however. Calling himself a “belt collector” Mix noted that he’s won gold where ever he’s fought, from his amateur career to King of the Cage. And now, “it’s all going to come to fruition on Saturday night when I beat Juan Archuleta.”

There were reports earlier this year that Mix had renewed his contract with Bellator. He pointed out during this week’s media day that the renewal actually took place late last year.

Either way, there was no promise of a title shot at the time of renewal. Yet after doing nothing but win, then going to Japan to fight on a cross-promotional card with RIZIN FF, Mix knew what was on the line. “With the win in RIZIN, I definitely did feel I deserved the title shot,” he said. “I didn’t know if it would be next, but the only way it wouldn’t be next is just the names, because these guys are a little more known to the casual fans.”

Those names, of course, would include Sergio Pettis, who is 2-0 in Bellator to date. “But the die-hard fans know who’s putting in work. They know who’s the hunter, and that’s me. I was just hoping Bellator would honor that, as they did.”

In addition to fighting for the belt, Mix is headlining his first Bellator card this weekend. “It doesn’t feel like anything different than any other fight I’ve ever been in I guess,” he said regarding the feeling heading into the event. “It’s just another fight. I’ve done this 24 times, this is just my 25th. It doesn’t feel any different, especially without fans. It just feels almost smaller, because there’s no crowd, no hype behind it.”

Mix himself, however, has plenty of hype. Just don’t mistake him for just a grappler, regardless of the cool submissions he’s been known to pull off. “I don’t necessarily just call myself a grappler. I guess they just named me that because I finish people on the ground,” observed Mix. “I can fight standing up as well. It just so happens that no one’s been able to stuff a takedown.”

Bellator 246 takes place this Saturday, September 12 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. The event airs live on Paramount Network.

Mix, 13-0, has been paired up with the vastly more experienced Juan Archuleta at Bellator 246, with the promotion’s bantamweight title on the line.

Due to some foolishness and bias, Mix doesn’t even have a Wikipedia entry. But never, ever let that cloud your judgement on the quality of a fighter. Mix has done nothing but impress in his career thus far, and he’ll look to graduate to star status should he claim the title so early on in his career (if we’re being honest, people tend to overlook his amateur experience).

At 8-0 and fighting Derek Campos, Keoni Diggs has the chance to make a name for himself on the very same card. There’s that, and a lot more action this week, so here’s our Weekly MMA Prospect Report.

Middleweight, Vladimir Mineev (14-1-1)

Mineev has several good wins, the most notable being against former UFC fighter Maiquel Falcão, who actually beat Mineev in an awful decision victory in the fight prior. There have been doubts in the past about his cardio, takedown defense, and head movement, but he has grown into a well-rounded martial artist. The Russian has a dynamic offensive striking attack with excellent output with his hands and kicks, and his wrestling is underrated as well. He fights Dauren Ermekov (15-4).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQhGgmTl2zc&ab_channel=FIGHTNIGHTSGLOBALTV

Lightweight, Usman Nurmagomedov (10-0)

A cousin of UFC champ Khabib and brother of fellow prospect Umar, Usman Nurmagomedov on the feet is a kickboxer at heart. He doesn’t throw with much power but he’s flashy and diverse with his attacks. He will throw spinning kicks, roundhouse kicks, and question mark kicks. Usman stays unpredictable attacking with all limbs and throws combos with just his legs alone. His wrestling is good, as well as timing double legs and on top. Simply put, he is a big threat. He fights Svyatoslav Shabanov (18-9-1).

LFA 91 | Friday | US

Bantamweight, Hailey Cowan (5-1)

Cowan has an extensive background in gymnastics and was very accomplished at Baylor University. She won a few tumbling national titles and is a two-time All-American. After coming up short in her pro-MMA debut, she then went on to win her next four fights looking impressive in the process. She’s a big and strong 125er who is moving up to 135 for this fight. Cowan is well-rounded, holding a rear-naked choke and a highlight-reel head kick knockout. She fights Kelly Clayton (1-2).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oagmr_gLLWk&ab_channel=AXSTVFights

Light-heavyweight, Nick Maximov (4-0)

Maximov outside of MMA has put in some time in wrestling and jiu-jitsu. He won the American Nationals for Gi/No-Gi at purple belt, was a National Junior College All American (3rd) at Clackamas community college, and has won multiple regional/state titles for jiu-jitsu as well. Currently 4-0 as a pro, Maximov went 6-0 as an amateur. There isn’t much recent footage but he has the hype behind his name. He fights Johnny James (1-1).

Bellator 245 | Friday | US

Light-heavyweight, Alex Polizzi (6-0)

Polizzi has the recipe to be a big prospect in the 205lb weight class. Polizzi was a D1 wrestler at Northwestern University from 2010-2015 and was a state champion. Polizzi needs work on his stand-up but his wrestling and athleticism will take him far. His ground and pound have been his best weapon to date. He’s never gone the distance but his pressure and relentless style (a.k.a. his cardio) have held up just fine and that’s into championship rounds shown in his last fight. He fights Rafael Carvalho (16-4).

Bantamweight, Keith Lee (6-3)

Don’t be deceived by Lee’s record at only being .500. His losses are all to good fighters. Keith is the younger brother of UFC star and top contender, Kevin Lee. Keith is very excited and is extremely well-rounded with excellent cardio. On the feet, Lee has a nice jab and throws a lot of kicks. He’s an even better wrestler who actually out-wrestled an excellent wrestler in Shawn Bunch. He fights Vinicius Zani (11-6).

Bellator MMA will host two big back-to-back cards this September, featuring a handful of anticipated debuts, a bantamweight title fight, a light heavyweight rematch and more.

Multiple sources have confirmed to Cageside Press that Bellator will head back to the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT on September 11 and 12, for what is expected to be Bellator 245 and Bellator 246. The weekend stint will see the Friday show headlined by Lyoto Machida and Phil Davis, in a rematch of their 2013 meeting in the UFC. That card will also feature the debut of former UFC bantamweight title challenger Cat Zingano.

The Saturday show, on September 12, will be headlined by a bantamweight title fight between Juan Archuleta and Patrick “Patchy” Mix. As well, Jon Fitch will take on Neiman Gracie in a grappling fan’s dream contest, and Liz Carmouche will make her promotional debut against Invicta FC and Ultimate Fighter alum DeAnna Bennett. Bennett will also be making her promotional debut.

ESPN was first to report news of the bookings.

Davis (21-5, 1NC) and Machida (26-9) faced off at UFC 163 in 2013, with Davis coming away with the unanimous decision win. Since then, both have found their way to Bellator, where “Mr. Wonderful” won the light heavyweight grand prix in 2015, and the light heavyweight title the following year.

However, Davis lost the belt to Ryan Bader in 2017, in his first attempted title defense. Bader has held that belt ever since. Machida joined the promotion in 2018, meanwhile, winning his first two fights against Rafael Carvalho and Chael Sonnen before suffering his first loss in the organization last year, against Gegard Mousasi.

The Mousasi fight, though, came at middleweight. Now, it’s back to 205lbs for Machida. The fight comes in the wake of Bader’s title defense this weekend against Vadim Nemkov.

For Zingano, it’s a long-awaited debut. “Alpha” last fought at UFC 232 in December 2018, where she suffered a TKO loss due to an eye injury incurred by a toe poke from Megan Anderson. The now-38 year old signed with Bellator in October of last year. Zingano holds key wins over Amanda Nunes and Miesha Tate from earlier in her UFC career.

At Bellator 245, she’ll take on Gabby Holloway (6-5), who last competed in 2017, picking up a win over Alexis Dufresne at Bellator 174.

The following night, Juan Archuleta (24-2) and Patrick Mix (13-0) will meet, with the promotion’s vacant 135lb title on the line. That title has not been held since Kyoji Horiguchi vacated the belt last November, after being unable to defend it due to injury.

Former UFC bantamweight and flyweight title challenger Liz Carmouche (13-7) will also make her debut that night, in Bellator’s flyweight division. Carmouche last fought in August 2019, losing a title shot against Valentina Shevchenko at UFC Uruguay. She was later released from the promotion, and signed on with Bellator. A debut date for Carmouche had been announced for earlier this year, but the coronavirus pandemic put a stop to that.

Her opponent, DeAnna Bennett (10-6-1) had a single fight in the UFC after appearing on The Ultimate Fighter. A longtime Invicta FC athlete, she holds notable wins over current UFC title challenger Jennifer Maia, Miranda Maverick, and Karina Rodriguez. She also made it to the finals of Invicta FC’s Phoenix Series 2 flyweight tournament, only to lose to Maverick in the pair’s second meeting.

Also at Bellator 246, Jon Fitch (32-7-2, 1NC), who was last seen fighting to a draw with then-champ Rory MacDonald in Bellator’s welterweight grand prix, will face BJJ ace Neiman Gracie (9-1). Coincidentally, Gracie’s last fight, a loss, also came against MacDonald during the welterweight grand prix.

Sad news for MMA fans, as Bellator MMA and World Series of Fighting veteran Isaiah Chapman has died.

Chapman, 30, was reportedly killed Tuesday, shot in front of his Akron, Ohio home. Police responding to a call of shots fired found the victim on the ground, and had him transported to hospital. He was later pronounced dead. Reporter David McKinney initially reported the news on Twitter. Chapman’s death was later confirmed by Bellator matchmaker Rich Chou. A Go Fund Me account has been set up to cover funeral costs.

No suspects have been identified in the case as of yet.

A statement from the Go Fund Me for Chapman reads:

On April 7th, 2020 Isaiah “The Beast” Chapman was tragically taken from the world, leaving behind two daughters Faith & Aubrey, & son Isaac. Last night they lost not only their father but best friend and real life super hero. Isaiah was the best father for his children and was there for them every step of their lives. He was truly an example and role model to all. Isaiah had recently lived out his MMA dream by appearing in Bellator MMA. Proving that you should never give up on your dreams! He was always such a cheerful and loving person that will be remembered forever by everyone who he ever came in contact with. Our lives will never be the same without him, and we will all certainly miss his hugs. If you have it in your heart, we would appreciate any help for the funeral expenses and the rest will go to his family for other expenses. Please keep us all in prayers, especially his children that God may give us comfort for this unexpected loss.

A bantamweight, Chapman last competed at Bellator 232 in October, losing to Patrick Mix by way of Suloev Stretch. The loss snapped a three-fight win streak for “The Beast,” who compiled a 9-4 record across his pro career.

New Year’s Eve brought with it the annual year-end show from RIZIN FF, and this year’s entry, RIZIN 20, was a big one.

RIZIN Fighting Federation rang in the New Year in the traditional way, with a New Year’s Eve extravaganza. While Bellator: Japan, a show which the Japanese MMA outfit co-promoted, was able to showcase the final Japanese fight of the great Fedor Emelianenko, RIZIN 20 was arguably the deeper card.

Unfolding at the Saitama Super Arena, the event boasted three title fights. Kai Asakura and Manel Kape battled for the bantamweight championship vacated by Kyoji Horiguchi just months ago. Ayaka Hamasaki was set to defend her super atomweight belt against former UFC fighter and ROAD FC standout Seo Hee Ham. Jiří Procházka, meanwhile, welcomed C. B. Dollaway to RIZIN, with the Czech fighter’s light heavyweight title on the line.

All that, plus the lightweight grand prix, Satoshi Ishii, fresh off a stint in the PFL, undefeated Bellator MMA prospect Patrick Mix, and more!

Check below for full results from RIZIN 20! The event kicks off on December 31, 2019 at 1AM ET! RIZIN 20 is available online via Fite.tv

Patrick Mix takes on Yuki Motoya at RIZIN 20 on New Year’s Eve. A lot is going on at this New Year’s Eve extravaganza including the continuation of the lightweight grand prix. Mix vs. Motoya is a stellar bantamweight bout and could generate one of the standout, highlight-reel moments from the entire card. Mix has an unblemished record dating back to his amateur days and has established himself as one of Bellator’s best 135lb’ers. He’ll represent the promotion as he heads to Japan in this cross-promotional battle.

RIZIN 20

Mix (12-0) has been getting in the usual work at Jackson-Wink MMA ahead of his trip to Japan. Working with guys ranging anywhere from ’35 to ’55. Mix explained that “My coaches structure it because we have such diverse partners. So many different styles that come in this gym.”

Mix respects the skillset of Motoya but also sees his own distinct advantages in the fight. “I think he’s a good fighter,” Mix stated. “He fights on their circuits which is different than the American circuit I feel. I know he’s fought a lot lighter than me; flyweight 125… I have much respect for him and his game. But my size, my skill, and my work ethic is just going to be too much for him… I’m trying to go directly through him.”

Suloev Stretch

Mix pulled off a relatively rare submission maneuver in his last fight on the Bellator stage. A move that had never been pulled off in Bellator prior to that point. Mix defeated Isaiah Chapman via Suloev Stretch at 3:49 in the first roun of their fight. That went down at Bellator 232, and Mix seems to have residual momentum from his late October win. While Mix had pulled off the submission earlier in his MMA career, it was a history-making moment on the Bellator stage specifically.

When asked about that finish, Mix replied “It was pretty cool, man. Just to get it. I hunt from the back and it just shows my diversity. It shows I’m willing to take risks. I’m out there to try to finish guys. Not hold position. Even though it seems like I’m over the top, I’m still hunting the legs.”

Mix’s goals for 2020 are basically to maintain the consistency that he has been at for a meaningful period of time. “Continuing to get a body of work in Bellator. I want to stay active,” Mix said. “Don’t mind about the championship or getting rushed to that. I want to continue to fight these other contenders and just stay active even after December… The last six years I fought four times a year so I’m trying to continue that”

Bellator’s bantamweight belt

Mix has made his thoughts on the bantamweight title picture perfectly clear at various points throughout the calendar year. With Horiguchi vacating his RIZIN and Bellator MMA belts due to injury, this clears the way for the rest of the division. Namely the undefeated Patrick Mix who is being mentioned in title talks by fans and pundits alike.

“They haven’t communicated anything to me about the belt yet. I’m just trying to do my job taking these contenders out,” said Mix. “Putting them away. Look at everyone’s resumes and then look at mine. It just looks different.”

Mix continued, “Winning the belt, defending the belt… Being a champion those goals are all on my mind and they’re in my sights now.”

The RIZIN rules add an interesting wrinkle to this contest for ‘Patchy.’ Mix noted that “Normally I like to employ my elbows. I’m elbowing guys from the back.” That won’t be the case on New Year’s Even. Instead, the rule set will be “taking that away because I’m not going to have elbows, but I’ll have knees and kicks and stomps.”

If the soccer kick opportunity is there, he will capitalize on it. More than likely though, the rule set will open up some creative submission grappling sequences for Patrick Mix. “I feel like a lot of people don’t respect the grappling art of it. They think it’s boring. The casual fan,” he observed. “So if I can do some cool stuff like that, maybe it could draw some more people in. Get some more fans and more eyes on the sport.”

Bellator Japan, a cross-promotional effort that will feature a number of RIZIN FF fighters taking on their Bellator counterparts, has added several new bouts. In a press release Thursday, Bellator and RIZIN officials announced a host of fights in addition to the previously announced pairings of Fedor Emelianenko vs. Rampage Jackson and Michael Chandler vs. Benson Henderson.

Among them, Lorenz Larkin (21-7, 1NC), a potential candidate as the next Bellator MMA welterweight title challenger, will take on RIZIN’s Keita Nakamura (34–10–2, 1NC). Nakamura will be making his debut for RIZIN following his second stint in the UFC, where he went 4-4.

Also on deck, Bellator lightweight Goiti Yamauchi (24-4), of Brazilian-Japanese descent, will take on America’s Daron Cruickshank (22-12, 1NC), who has reinvigorated his career in Japan.

Nakamura was quoted in a press release Thursday as saying “I recall [Lorenz] Larkin tweeting something like ‘Free me from my chains and send me to Japan,’ so I would like to capture the loose monsoon with my rear naked choke and send him back home. But with all respect, I am truly grateful for the opportunity to face such a great fighter.”
