Topped by former featherweight champ Juntaro Ushiku taking on former Rings champ Mikuru Asakura (notable to western fans perhaps for his exhibition boxing bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr.), there were a number of recognizable names on the card. In addition to ex-champ Ushiku, Yutaka Saito, another former feather champ (who had actually lost his title to Ushiku) was also in action.

Mei Yamaguchi was returning to Japan for the first time since 2019, meanwhile, and moving to RIZIN from ONE Championship in a fight with Super Atomweight staple Kanna Asakura. UFC veterans Masanori Kanehara and Roque Martinez were also set to compete, with Martinez returning to RIZIN, where he had last competed in 2020.

Thanks to that last minute bump in the road, Fernandes was removed from the card entirely, with the fight likely rescheduled for the coming months. Instead, a heavyweight title fight of the interim variety was given headlining status — one that saw Anatoly Malykhin and Kirill Grishenko vying for gold, with champ Arjan Bhullar’s contract situation resolved just a few days ago.

Bhullar is expected to face the winner of Malykhin vs. Grishenko later this year.

Also on Friday’s Bad Blood card, Mei Yamaguchi returned against Jinhin Radzuan, and heavyweight prospect Hugo Cunha was paired up with Canada’s Dustin Joynson.

With four quarterfinal bouts playing out, the stage was set for some of the top names in the division to advance towards a title shot against champ Angela Lee. As well, one tournament alternate bout was held Friday at the Singapore Indoor Stadium; that match-up saw Japanese veteran Mei Yamaguchi take on Julie Mezabarba.

Despite having won three grand prix tournaments earlier in her career, Friday simply wasn’t Yamaguchi’s night. Brazil’s Mezabarba, in her promotional debut, had a clear edge on the feet, and her takedown defense and clinch work was enough to keep the fight where she wanted it more often than not. Yamaguchi tried to work her opponent over along the fence, looking for takedowns, only to more often than not be turned, or eat knees and elbows for her troubles. In the final minute, knowing a finish was required, Yamaguchi let her hands go, but Mezabarba was easily able to avoid serious damage.

The Brazilian took home a unanimous decision victory in the end, locking up the tournament alternate spot in the process.

While one Japanese fighter in Yamaguchi fell at ONE: Empower, another found success in the opening round of the atomweight grand prix.

Itsuki Hirata was paired up against American Alyse Anderson, a larger opponent expected to be the undefeated prospect’s toughest test to date.

Hirata opened the action with a low kick, and immediately had to deal with a left hand from the American. The Japanese fighter held her own on the feet, but a bigger question was answered when Anderson pressed her opponent up against the cage.

Believed to have the edge in size and strength, Anderson found herself thrown to the mat shortly after initiating the clinch. That forced Anderson to work off her back, looking for a triangle while Hirata worked in ground n’ pound. Hirata landed most of the damage in the exchange, but Anderson did hit home with a couple of upkicks towards the end of the round, forcing Hirata off her.

Round two once again had Anderson throwing combos, as she had early in round one. But Hirata was still the fighter walking forward, and this time it was the Japanese fighter who initiated a clinch against the fence. A lovely hip toss planted Anderson on her back, with Hirata moving straight into side control.

Anderson showed impressive flexibility, snaking her body around into a head-scissors position before scrambling back to her feet, but Hirata stayed on her opponent and took the fight right back down, where she again moved to side control. Anderson rolled over her opponent out the back, only for Hirata to get back on top in the next transition. Anderson then attempted to throw knees off the bottom, only to be warned for strikes to the back of the head.

With five minutes remaining in their quarterfinal fight, Anderson almost certainly needed to finish Itsuki Hirtata. The Japanese fighter shot early; Anderson defended the attempt with ease. Anderson fired a spinning back fist, and moments later dropped Hirata with a right! Hirata recovered, and instantly initiated a clinch. She’d get the fight down with a throw; Anderson would work back up, only to be taken down once again.

With the fight going the distance, it went to the scorecards. No surprises there, as Hirata earned the unanimous decision. She’ll move on to the semifinals, with match-ups in that round voted for by fans.

For those unaware, while the event was being held live, there would be no spectators in the building, due to the ongoing Coronavirus outbreak. But the show must go on, as they say, and the fighters were ready to put on a show. In the main event, burgeoning star Stamp Fairtex was defending her atomweight kickboxing crown. In the co-feature, Sam-A Gaiyanghadao was looking for a second title, as he took on Rocky Ogden for the promotion’s inaugural strawweight Muay Thai title.

Former UFC star Yoshihiro Akiyama was also in action as was fellow Japanese standout Mei Yamaguchi.

ONE Championship: Century Part II went down in Tokyo, Japan on Sunday. The second half of ONE’s 100th major show, the event was topped by two-division champion Aung La N Sang defending his light heavyweight title against Brandon Vera, ONE’s heavyweight king.

If the bout was an audition for a heavyweight run by Aung La, he passed it with flying colors, finishing Vera within two rounds. Holding a win over ONE heavyweight Alain Ngalani from earlier in his career, there’s a good chance ‘The Burmese Python’ could be fighting for a third title in 2020.

However, Arjan Bhullar, who finally debuted for ONE at Century Part II, may have something to say about that. Bhullar defeated former title challenger Mauro Cerilli, and could be next for Vera.

Brandon Vera, ONE Championship’s heavyweight champion, was set to move down to light heavyweight and challenge Aung La N Sang for the promotion’s light heavyweight title at ONE: Century Part II on Sunday. Going down in Tokyo, Japan, the event was a huge milestone for Asia’s top MMA promotion.

In the co-main event, a pair of former championships would face off, as Shinya Aoki took on Honorio Banario. Bibiano Fenandes, who long ago flirted with a UFC run, was also in action, defending his bantamweight title against Kevin Belingon. It was the fourth meeting between the pair, and third straight, after Belingon was disqualified for illegal elbows at their last meeting in March.

May’s Enter the Dragon card from ONE Championship, set to go down in Singapore, continues to expand. On Tuesday, the promotion revealed via press release the addition of six new bouts, including former champ Yoshitaka Naito, and grapping ace Garry Tonon. The bouts join an event already headlined by lightweight champ Shinya Aoki defending his title against Christian Lee.

Naito (13-3), the former strawweight champion, has fallen on hard times of late. He’s just 1-3 in his last four bouts, including a pair of fights with Joshua Pacio, the promotion’s current strawweight champ. ‘Nobu’ will take on Alex Silva for the third time at Enter the Dragon, completing a trilogy that began in 2017. The pair each have one win over the other. Silva (7-3) has lost two straight, against Naito and Silva, both in 2018.

Garry Tonon (4-0) will continue his journey into MMA at the Singapore show. ‘The Lion Killer’ has won four straight since debuting in ONE Championship last year. This time out, he’ll take on Japan’s Yoshiki Nakahara (12-4). He rides into the fight against Tonon on a seven fight win streak.

Lightweight Amir Khan (11-5) will also be in action that night, facing Italy’s Iurie Lapicus. Lapicus (12-0) will be making his promotional debut. Mei Yamaguchi (19-11-1) will face China’s Meng Bo (13-5), and Rahul Raju (4-4), who will be a local favorite, is set to take on Richard “Notorious” Corminal (4-4) at lightweight. A final bout announced Tuesday will have Muay Thai star “Kru Rong” Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke square off with Miao Li Tao.

ONE Championship was at home in Singapore on Friday, with Call to Greatness. The main event, the ONE Super Series women’s atomweight championship. The title was set to be awarded to the winner of Thailand’s Stamp Fairtex, and American Janet Todd. In MMA action, meanwhile, the lightweight grand prix had two bouts going down: Amir Khan was facing Ariel Sexton, while Ev Ting took on Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev.

Ayaka Miura was in action early, as was Anthony Njokuani, who took on Regian Eersel in kickboxing action on the preliminary card.

ONE’s first trip to Singapore in 2019 continues to fill out. On Tuesday, the promotion, which is based out of the nation, announced a trio of fights for the upcoming Call to Greatness card. Among the names added to the event, standout Japanese atomweight Mei Yamaguchi, taking on China’s Meng Bo. Additionally, men’s strawweight Jeremy Miado will face Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke for the second time.

Yamaguchi (18–11–1) remains a pioneer of women’s MMA, having fought back in Smackgirl in Japan at a time when few promotions featured the ladies. Well over a decade later, Yamaguchi has struggled to find success under the ONE banner, coming up short twice against Angela Lee. The first defeat at the hand’s of ONE’s breakout star came in the inaugural title fight for atomweights in the promotion. A rematch a couple of years later in 2018 ended in the same result. Both fights were unanimous decision wins for Lee.

However, Yamaguchi has won three of her other four fights in ONE, and is coming off a win over Jomary Torres. Meng Bo (13-5), meanwhile, is on a three fight winning streak. Quality of competition, however, is an obvious concern. Bo’s three straight wins came over opponents with records of 2-4, 3-2, and 3-8 respectively.

Meanwhile in strawweight action, Filipino Jeremy Miado (8-3) will look for a second win over Thailand’s Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke (9-4). The first came in the Thai fighter’s home nation, and he will no doubt be eager to get his revenge.

Also added to the Call to Greatness card, Anthony Njokuani, a familiar name to UFC fans, will face Regian “The Immortal” Eersel in a ONE Super Series kickboxing bout at lightweight.

ONE Championship was back in action Friday with their final show of 2018. Destiny of Champions went down at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and featured Muay Thai action atop the card. Yet there was still plenty of MMA content as well, with Mei Yamaguchi, Alex Silva, and former middleweight champion Vitaly Bigdash all on the docket.

Malaysia’s own Agilan Thani was also in action, taking on Kiamrian Abbasov. Thani (9-2) had last fought in July, losing to Zebaztian Kadestam, who went on to win the welterweight title last month. With the division wide open and a new champion crowned, Thani, who had once challenged Ben Askren for welterweight gold in ONE, had an opportunity to inch closer to another crack at the title.

Another big story line on the ONE Championship: Destiny of Champions card, three bouts on the women’s side of the sport, at atomweight, flyweight, and strawweight.

Then in the main event, Yodanklai IWE Fairtex taking on Australia’s Luis Regis in Muay Thai action.
