In the co-main event, lightweight champion Mateusz Legierski is hoping to make the first defense of his own title, with the Polish star taking on Gökhan Aksu, a Turkish-born Austrian.

Denis Frimpong, meanwhile, is set to welcome former featherweight challenger Niko Samsonidse to the lightweight division.

A near-forgotten promotion returns, while Bellator’s featherweight grand prix finally gets rolling again, and brings a bunch of prospects with it on the Bellator 252 undercard. Don’t sleep on KSW 56 either. Read on for the latest installment of our Weekly MMA Prospect Report.

XFC 43 | Wednesday | US

Lightweight, Kenneth Cross (11-3)

Fighting out of Michigan Top Team with the likes of Daron Cruickshank and Cody Stamann, Kenny Cross is a good prospect. Cross is a fast starter who is very explosive. He’s got good movement with a dangerous left hand and is super athletic. With all that, he can wrestle well and grind as he has a physical advantage over most guys. His cardio is still a work in progress but overall a fun guy. He fights (11-6).

Brave CF 45 | Thursday | Bahrain

Lightweight, Akhmed Magomedov (6-0)

Magomedov has a background in freestyle wrestling and was the Russian National Jiu-Jitsu champion in 2017. The Russian only has six fights, but three finishes, getting it done on the mat with submissions and ground and pound. He’s a smart fighter and could be someone to watch for in the future. He fights Abdul Azim Badakhshi (10-2).

Bellator 252 | Thursday | US

Welterweight, Yaroslav Amosov (24-0)

In Yaroslav Amosov’s stand-up, he combines his kicks and punches extremely well. He moves in and out fluidly with his punches and uses his reach well too. Yaroslav doesn’t have a lot of knockout power, but he is a finisher, finishing all but four of his wins. Amosov also has very good submission skills with nine submission wins, using his long arms mostly for chokes. He also has excellent takedown defense. He fights Logan Storley (11-0).

Welterweight, Logan Storley (11-0)

Storley is a 4X All-American wrestler out of the University of Minnesota. Storley, who is currently 11-0, has been dominating in his MMA career thus far. He makes takedowns look easy, has heavy pressure and lands big ground and pound where he is the most effective. Storley is a great wrestler, though on the feet he hasn’t shown too much. He does have a powerful right hand and does a good job throwing straight punches and has shown solid leg kicks, but can wrestle all fight long. He fights Yaroslav Amosov (24-0).

Featherweight, Aaron Pico (6-3)

Pico has competed in folkstyle, freestyle, and Greco-Roman wrestling, winning a championship in all three. He has competed in multiple wrestling-based matches and has become very successful. Pico also has a background in boxing, winning many belts and also being named Junior Golden Gloves champion in 2009. Pico has had a few setbacks already but is back on a two-fight win streak. He has excellent boxing technique with power and precision. Also, he has high-level wrestling. At only 24, he has the overall skill set to be champion one day. He fights John de Jesus (13-8).

Bantamweight, Jornel Lugo (4-0)

Lugo is only 4-0 as a pro but he’s been very impressive including a win over John Douma and Cortavious Romious who are both good fighters. Lugo does have a grappling game but on the feet is where he excels. He’s a tricky fighter who utilizes his striking from the end of his punches. He holds his hands low to his waist in what could be a problem but it allows the angles he uses to stay hidden. Lugo frequently switches stances giving different looks. Overall a young and talented fighter. He fights Schyler Sootho (4-0).

ONE Championship | Friday | Singapore

Flyweight, Lito Adiwang (11-2)

Fighting out of the Philippines, Lito Adiwang is on a roll winning his last seven fights. On the feet, Adiwang is very explosive and has a lot of power in his hands. On the mat, he is good on top and has solid ground and pound. He can be a bit flat-footed but makes up for it with his blitzes and power. Adiwang has that one-punch stopping power. He fights Hiroshi Minowa (11-2).

UWC 24 | Friday | Mexico

Strawweight, Yasmine Jauregui (4-0)

Still very green, Yasmine Jauregui has really impressed in her career thus far. Her style is reminiscent of UFC fighter Maycee Barber in a few ways. Jauregui has shown solid ground and pound, though she looks to be more skilled on the feet. She will throw a lot of volume with her kicks and punches putting it all together well. Yasmine is always throwing and looking to end the fight. She does need to work on some things like her movement and striking defense. With that said, she can be very good. She fights Annely Jimenez Garcia (10-5).

Heavyweight, Jesus Navarrete (5-0)

Navarrete is a chubbier heavyweight but is talented enough to watch out for. The big man is a technical striker with a good jab and a lot of output. Navarrete will march forward throwing his hands and kicks. He’s got that Mexican toughness marching forward taking shots to give some. Not sold on him altogether but is a good striker and fun to watch. He fights Enrique Lara (4-3).

KSW 56 | Saturday | Russia

Welterweight: Roberto Soldic (17-3)

The Croatian has beaten some stiff competition including Lewis Long, Borys Mańkowski, and Dricus Du Plessis, winning five titles in his career. Soldic is one of the best welterweights outside the UFC. He’s always coming forward and always looking for the finish. Soldic has heavy hands and a very accurate head kick, which he has dropped so many opponents with. It’s the constant volume he throws that allow him to do so well. He’s always throwing punches behind kicks and vice-versa. Soldic is the real deal. He fights moving up to 185 Michał Materla (29-7).

Light heavyweight, Ivan Erslan (9-0)

Erslan is easily the best Croatian 205-pound fighter outside a big promotion. Lately, he has fought decent fighters, at least decent enough to test his skills. On the feet, he is dangerous with power in his hands, but he is more of a threat on the mat. His ground and pound is by far his best weapon — it’s a fight changer. He fights Tomasz Narkun (17-3) which is a huge step up in competition.

Welterweight, Mateusz Legierski (6-0)

Legierski is well-rounded but is better on the feet. He has a heavy right hand throwing the overhand and right cross. He fights in bursts exploding forward with three-strike combinations usually. He throws a good right kick to the midsection and is good attacking the legs of his opponent. Legierski has some background in kickboxing too which explains the commitment to his kicks. He really doesn’t have much wrestling technique but has the strength to just bully guys down. He fights Francisco Albano Barrio (7-1).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIvq7hh7mVY&ab_channel=MMApodlupou

SFT 24 | Saturday | Saturday

Lightweight, Manoel Sousa (5-0)

Sousa is a heavy-handed fighter who slings powerful right and left hooks. He does a good job going to the body and throwing kicks behind his strikes. He has good head movement and good footwork as well. He looks like a really dangerous fighter that can be a good prospect for the coming years. The powerful Sousa fights Estabili Amato (10-3).

Our latest look at a trio of undefeated prospects takes us to Russia, Poland, then back to the good ol’ U.S. of A. This time out, it’s Murat Khasanov, Mateusz Legierski, and Keoni Diggs in the spotlight.

Murat Khasanov

Fighting currently at the age of 29
Weighing in at 170 lbs
Standing at 5’11″
Hailing from Nalchik, Russia
A professional record of 5-0-1 with three submission wins

The five things that stand out the most:

Strong wrestling

Aggressive

Has a dangerous guillotine

Relentless pressure

One-dimensional

Where does Khasanov excel?

Murat Khasanov is a wrestler first, grinding out or submitting opponents in all five of his wins. He’s a bull, just powering forward pressing his opponent backwards into the clinch. Khasanov is very strong in the clinch and once he gets his hands around your body he’s capable of just slinging you down or creating sweeps/trips.

The Russian is, of course, good at completing double and single legs as well. Khasanov is a brute on top having extremely heavy top pressure. He’s not the most active at times but is more of an opportunist as he waits for his opponent to scramble so he can take advantage. Even against another superior wrestler in Mike Graves, who is a former UFC fighter and veteran, Khasanov gave him a lot of problems. The clinch played a big part in the fight with both men jockeying for position and both landing takedowns. The fight, in the end, was ruled a draw.

Where does Khasanov need Improvement?

As mentioned above, Khasanov is a one-dimensional fighter being mainly a wrestler. His wrestling really shows when he’s in the clinch. When coming forward though he’s a bit sloppy just rushing in a straight line with a wide base. His wrestling is very good, so it will take someone with excellent defense and/or footwork to keep the fight standing. He hasn’t really fought a good striker but once he does he will be in some trouble. Khasanov is a good wrestler but his stand up and even his ability to close the distance is an issue for him.

Ceiling – High or Low

Low. Khasanov is fighting for the ACB promotion, so he’s going to be tested against some excellent competition. He hasn’t really had a legit all-around opponent. In fact, outside of Graves, Khasanov hasn’t fought anyone all that good. He’s one-dimensional and not even overly dominant in the areas he excels at.

Mateusz Legierski

Fighting currently at the age of 23
Weighing in at 170 lbs
Standing at 5’11″
Hailing from Koniaków, Poland
Training out of Octagon Team Cieszyn
A professional record of 6-0 with five finishes

The five things that stand out the most:

Power right hand

Good leg kicks

Dangerous overhand

Good counter striker

A bit reckless

Where does Legierski excel?

Mateusz Legierski is well-rounded but is better on the feet. He has a heavy right hand throwing the overhand and right cross. He fights in bursts exploding forward with three-strike combinations usually. He throws a good right kick to the midsection and is good attacking the legs of his opponent.

Legierski is a dangerous power puncher, especially good at catching you when you come in. He’s not afraid to get hit at all which makes him even more dangerous because he’s not afraid to stand and bang in the pocket. Legierski has some background in kickboxing too which explains the commitment to his kicks. He really doesn’t have much wrestling technique but has the strength to just bully guys down. He doesn’t show too much with his jiu-jitsu but does have a nice triangle he finished with off his back. Legierski has just shown to be more confident riding the mount/back landing ground and pound.

Where does Legierski need work:

Defensively, the Polish natives does have a few glaring holes. Striking defense-wise he looks good as he keeps his hands high and his right hand glued to his face. As he is covered in that area he lacks in moving his head off the centerline. He’s pretty easy to hit especially when he comes forward, as he really just crashes in on a straight line. His takedown defense is a little questionable as well.

Ceiling – High or Low?

High. He’s got youth on his side at only 23-years-old. In his young career, Legierski has already gone five rounds winning the Oktagon MMA featherweight title. More importantly, he looked pretty good going five rounds. He has some refining to do on his striking like cutting angles better and learning his range better. I really like where he’s at in his career and he will only get better.

Keoni Diggs

Fighting currently at the age of 33
Weighing in at 155 lbs
Standing at 5’9″
Hailing from Glendale, Arizona, US
Training out of 808 Fight Factory
A professional record of 8-0 with five finishes

The five things that stand out the most:

Heavy top control

Big power in his hands

Good left hand

Good grappling

Wrestling is solid

Where does Diggs excel?

Keoni Diggs really excels everywhere. He a better grappler, where he’s smooth at taking the back and once there, most likely he going to finish that rear-naked choke — holding four wins going that way on his record. Diggs has also finished with a kneebar so he is well versed on the mat. Diggs is always looking for the finish, always landing heavy active ground and pound which usually creates openings for him to grab the neck.

His wrestling is solid. He times his takedowns when his foes over-commit coming forward and can press the legs to get his hands clasped dumping his opponents down. Diggs is a relentless fighter always pressing forward and landing takedowns, and his work rate is very noticeable. The Hawaiian is a good technical boxer throwing always in combinations from in a tight range. Diggs has a stoppage from leg kicks and it has been a tool he’s been using more and more. He has the gas tank and aggressiveness which makes him a big problem.

Where does Diggs need work:

Diggs is honestly well-rounded and he doesn’t have any glaring holes. His level of competition has been fairly poor having only fought two guys with over five pro fights. He’s been taken down before but has bounced back up so his takedown defense is questionable. Diggs can be a bit wild closing the distance at times so the likelihood of him getting caught coming in is a worry. Overall though he’s solid and don’t have any holes looking into his tape.

Ceiling – High or Low?

High. It is tough to see how far Diggs will actually go considering he’s already 33-years-old. He just hasn’t shown he’s slowing down in the slightest as he only has nine fights combined as an amateur and pro. Diggs is currently signed with Bellator so I’d imagine he gets a slow build but I think he can compete up with the top ten right now.

During this MMA hiatus, we’ve taken to scouting world and selecting five favorite prospects from each country for the most part. In this edition, we take a look at some of the top fighting prospects coming out of Poland. There are so mant talented Polish fighters out there and some of the bigger names include Mamed Khalidov, Krzysztof Jotko, Marcin Tybura, Karolina Kowalkiewicz, Jan Blachowitz, and former UFC strawweight queen, Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

Middleweight, Cezary Kesik (12-0)

Cezary Kesik is very underrated and is one of the best, if not the best, Polish prospects out there. Kesik is exciting, bringing an aggressive kickboxing style with a lot of power in his hands with six finishes by way of KO/TKO. If needed, Kesik will take the fight down where he is really talented with positional control and transitions. Kesik is the current Thunderstrike Fight League middleweight champion, the same promotion UFC light heavyweight Michal Oleksiejczuk came from.

Lightweight, Mateusz Rebecki (11-1)

Mateusz Rebecki is a BJJ black belt and is a two-time gold medalist in ADCC (Poland). He trains out of Berserker Team with fighters like Michal Materla, Tomasz Narkun, and much more established veterans. Rebecki is the current Fight Exclusive Night lightweight champion which is a solid promotion out of Poland. Rebecki is a bit one-dimensional being solely a grappler but in that area, he’s just so dangerous and that’s on top or bottom. Also, watch if he gets into the crucifix position because he is a monster there.

Featherweight, Dawid Smielowski (6-0)

Dawid Smielowski is contracted at featherweight but has competed mainly in catchweight bouts. Either way he’s a big fighter standing at 5’10” — especially at featherweight. Smielowski is a highlight-reel fighter. He has a 100% finish rate with 4 KO/TKO and two submissions. Among those wins, he has finished with a bulldog choke, a flying knee, and a head kick. Smielowski, being a tall rangy, fighter is a solid kickboxer. And while he can be technical, he’s a showman, throwing caution to the wind always looking for the kill shot. His takedown defense does need work but even off his back he’s shown to be at least promising. Smielowski does have improved grappling and at only 24 he has a high ceiling.

Welterweight, Mateusz Legierski (6-0)

Mateusz Legierski is a young (23) Polish fighter who is a fun fighter who has finished all but one fight. He has some decent wrestling and is a threat on the mat, but is arguably a much more dangerous striker. Legierski has big power in both his hands and besides that he throws very nice inside and outside leg kicks. He does get taken down when he shouldn’t but always gets back to his feet.

Featherweight, Mateusz Gamrot (15-0)

Mateusz Gamrot may not be considered a prospect due to his success for a big promotion in KSW. However, in my opinion, he qualifies as a prospect so he will be on my list. Gamrot is the former KSW dual champ at lightweight and featherweight before he relinquished his titles. Outside of MMA, he’s won the ADCC European Championships and won a gold medal at the Polish Championships in BJJ twice. Gamrot has beaten former UFC fighters Norman Parke and Andre Winner, but has some good wins over stiff competition in general. He’s more of a smart striker than he is a dynamic striker. He is very good at throwing feints, he switches stances a lot which is difficult for an opponent, and he covers distance very well. He has good qualities on the feet but his wrestling is much better— even more so his ground and pound.

There’s not a ton of MMA action this week, with the focus being on the UFC’s trip to Rio Rancho in the wake of UFC 247. There’s a chance the next UFC light heavyweight contender could be selected there, but what about the rest of the MMA world?

There are a few promotions in action globally, and a handful of prospects on display. Here’s our weekly report on who to keep an eye on!

One Pride MMA Fight Night 36 | Friday | Indonesia

Lightweight: Jeka Asparido Saragih (8-1)

After losing his first fight, Saragih has won his next eight fights finishing every fight. On the feet, he has strong kicks and is very explosive. He has problems with takedown defense but he scrambles very well. Saragih is even better on the mat who has active ground and pound and decent enough jiu-jitsu. He fights Angga Hans (9-2).

Eagles Next Level | Saturday | Moldova

Featherweight: Valeriu Mircea (25-5-1)

Valeriu Mircea started off his MMA career with a padded record. His first eight opponents were lower-tier fighters. Lately though, he’s fought better competition with names like Djamil Chan and Anton Kuivanen sticking out. The Moldovan is aggressive, though at times he can be too aggressive and tire himself out. He’s got a big overhand right and slicing elbows. He has decent wrestling and a good ground game but on the feet is where he’s really dangerous. He fights Martun Mezhlumyan (8-1).

Featherweight: Martun Mezhlumyan (8-1)

Martun Mezhlumyan seems to be a promising prospect but fight footage does lack on the young Armenian fighter. He did impress in his last fight though in December. He had that killer instinct from the bell to the finish. Throwing output from the beginning Mezhlumyan really loved to throw his lead elbow over and over. He also mixed in three takedowns as well and landed even more heavy elbows. He fights Valeriu Mircea (25-5-1)

Oktagon Prime 3 | Saturday | Slovakia

Lightweight: Mateusz Legierski (5-0)

Mateusz Legierski is a young (23) Polish fighter who is a fun fighter with a 100% finish rate. He has some decent wrestling and is a threat on the mat, but is arguably a much more dangerous striker. Legierski has big power in both his hands and besides that he throws very nice inside and outside leg kicks. He does get taken down when he shouldn’t but always gets back to his feet. He fights Miroslav Štrbák (18-9-1).

Featherweight: Vojto Barborik (11-1)

Currently on a nine-fight win streak, Vojto Barborik’s only loss is to a good fighter in Tomas Deak. Barborik is primarily a wrestler who chains together his takedown attempts well. He’s a monster on top with active and heavy ground and pound. He’s very sound with nasty elbows and heavy hammer fist. Barborik doesn’t have many TKO stoppages as eight of his wins are via submission. He fights Elison Gonçalvez (8-6).

Featherweight: Ludovit Klein (15-2)

Ludovit Klein has plenty of experience with 17 pro fights at a young age and some wins over good competition. He has a background in boxing being an amateur boxing champion of Slovakia. On the feet, he has a good jab and a dangerous head kick. At times he needs to throw more follow-ups but still at least throws steady output. Klein has some solid wrestling also and he mixes it in together well. He’s a fun fighter who honestly is improving in each fight. He fights former UFC fighter, Łukasz Sajewski (14-5).

November is already in the rear-view mirror, but this week we take a look back at the best prospects for the month.

Mallory Martin has already graduated to the UFC, but in November, she ranked as one of the top prospects for the month. Joining her among the month’s top prospects are Umar Nurmagomedov (cousin of UFC champion Khabib), Bellator’s Aviv Gozali, and lots more.

Welterweight, Josh Togo (7-3)

Josh Togo beat an undefeated fighter in David Martinez taking the Eternal lightweight title. Martinez is a good wrestler and Togo had perfect takedowns and some good footwork helped that. Togo picked Martinez apart on the outside with lead leg kicks, lead uppercuts, and jabs. He mixed it up perfectly and although the power wasn’t there, he still did drop Martinez briefly in round two.

Bantamweight, Lisa Verzosa (5-0)

I was really impressed with the toughness, heart, and tenacity of Lisa Verzosa last month. It takes two to make a war and her opponent Kerri Kenneson did just as well. Verzosa got dropped, hit a lot, and busted up but she held her own and gave out just as much damage. She really found her rhythm once in the clinch landing output to the body and head. Her defensive wrestling was good as well, and she would be the one in top position. A gritty fight where she did just enough.
Grade: C+

Strawweight, Mallory Martin (6-2)

Mallory Martin continued to extend her win streak in November, pushing it to five. She beat a good prospect in Cynthia Acreo and Martin won all three rounds. Arceo was doing pretty well on the feet finding her range but Martin found success getting takedowns. Getting the fight down each round, it became a familiar performance from Martin. She dominated once on top getting dominant positions (mount) and raining down her elbows, which she loves to throw. The win helped earn her a spot on the UFC DC card as a short-notice replacement.

Featherweight, Elijah Johns (5-1)

The brother of UFC fighter Miles Johns, Elijah moved his win streak to three last month. Elijah showed glimpses of striking but instead won with his wrestling. He had real solid, explosive takedowns getting the fight down each round. On top, he dominated on control and always worked for the finish but his opponent was tough. It’s time for LFA to give Johns a good push now.

Strawweight, Cheyanne Buys (4-1)

Cheyanne Buys was impressive in her second LFA fight winning an easy decision. Buys was always pressing the action and found a home with that looping right over and over. Her movement was good and her flow of kicks and punches was put together well. Buys threw and landed a lot of volume. In the third round, she even secured two takedowns and landed some good ground and pound.

Bantamweight, JP Buys (8-2)

JP Buys was making his LFA debut in November, and ran through his opponent getting the quick finish. He got the single leg early on, pulling opponent Rodriguez down. Buys quickly transitioned to the back and took no time sinking both hooks in. He flattened out Rodriguez and would rattle off many strikes to the side of the head. Buys had the position locked down and the ref eventually would step in.

Lightweight, Brant Moore (7-1)

In November, Brant Moore beat his third undefeated fighter in a good prospect in the form of Nation Gibrick. Nation was known as the good wrestler but Moore was the one quickly getting the takedown. Gibrick was constantly moving his hips looking to reverse but the top control of Moore was on lockdown. He smoothly moved into mount and shortly after he won with the RNC,

Bantamweight, Jose Johnson (11-5)

Jose Johnson was taking on a very game in Brazilian Rafael Costa. Costa was on Johnson early wanting to close the distance and get the takedown. He did have Jose in some trouble with a d’arce but Jose showed solid defense. While Costa was working for a takedown, Johnson landed a perfect elbow to the temple. That one elbow knocked out Costa, face-planting him in devastating fashion. Note: Johnson was an insane 68-12 as an amateur.

Bantamweight, Adrian Yanez (10-3)

Adrian Yanez had a great fight in the LFA 78 main event with a good fighter in Kyle Estrada. Yanez did start off a little slow and you could say he lost the first round. In rounds 2 and 3 however, Yanez turned up the heat. Yanez did an awesome job stepping into the pocket and letting his hands go. He showed solid boxing throwing from some good angels and always throwing more than two strikes at a time. Estrada was very game as well and did well but after a while the output was on the side of Yanez.
Grade: B+

https://twitter.com/ImShannonTho/status/1195565550224728064

Welterweight, Ian Garry (3-0)

Ian Garry had to battle through adversity at the start of the fight getting cracked by a right hand. Garry though stayed upright and recovered quickly. He got control against the cage and was landing many left uppercuts. That forced his opponent to give up his back and Garry to pull him down. From there it was sealed as Garry quickly finished with the RNC.
