In the night’s co-main event, long-time KSW heavyweight champion Phil de Fries was back in action, this time taking on Marcin Wójcik. A former FEN champ, Wójcik had won two straight including a bout over former ranked UFC and Bellator heavyweight Augusto Sakai.

De Fries, however, was almost certainly the most formidable heavyweight outside the UFC beyond Francis Ngannou. De Fries was looking to make the fourteenth defense of his KSW title, an unthinkable number.

De Fries wasn’t the only major star in action on Saturday at KSW 117 however. Mamed Khalidov was back looking to reclaim his old middleweight title, which he had held twice previously. That main event fight saw champ Paweł Pawlak looking to fend off the longtime KSW star.

Launched in in 2004, Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki (in English, Martial Arts Confrontation) has helped spark the careers of fighters like Jan Blachowicz, Mateusz Gamrot, Dricus Du Plessis, and other UFC stars. Strongman Mariusz Pudzianowski flourished there, and Salahdine Parnasse, one of the hottest featherweight prospects in years, also flourished under the KSW banner.

Two other massive stars for the promotion, Mamed Khalidov and heavyweight champ Phil De Fries, arguably the best heavyweight outside of the PFL and UFC, were in action on Saturday to mark the occasion. Khalidov was booked in the main event against Adrian Bartosiński, while De Fries put his heavyweight title on the line against UFC vet Darko Stosic.

Also set for the Epic card was a single-night light heavyweight tournament, with four men competing. Piotr Kacprzak vs. Adam Brysz, meanwhile, would be contested under MMA rules, but with fighters wearing a Gi.

The same venue that housed the original KSW Colosseum event in 2017, breaking European attendance records for a mixed martial arts event, again welcomed some of the promotion’s biggest stars in Mamed Khalidov and Mariusz Pudzianowski.

Khalidov found himself in the evening’s main event, in a non-title fight rubber match with British rival Scott Askham. In the co-feature, meanwhile, rising talent Salahdine Parnasse, already having claimed featherweight gold and an interim lightweight title, looked to unify the belts against lightweight champ Marian Ziolkowski.

And what would any big KSW card be without strongman Mariusz Pudzianowski, one of the faces of the promotion for years? He was paired up with boxer-turned-mixed martial artist Artur Szpilka.

With 50,000 fans expected to be in attendance, the stadium show is expected to be one of MMA’s largest events.

While the majority of the card’s fighters successfully made weight on Friday, one title bout was lost from the KSW Colosseum 2 line-up. Brazil’s Werlleson Martins (18-5) was deemed unfit to compete while cutting weight for his bantamweight title fight with Jakub Wiklacz (14-3-1).

With doctor’s failing to clear Martins, the bout has been scratched from the card.

The KSW Colosseum 2 main event between Scott Askham (19-5) and Mamed Khalidov (36-8-2), however, is official. The heavyweight clash between strongman Mariusz Pudzianowski (17-8) and Artur Szpilka (2-0) is also a go, as is the lightweight title fight featuring Marian Ziolkowski (25-8-1) and Salahdine Parnasse (17-1).

On Monday, promotion officials announced that Mamed Khalidov (36-8-2) will face Scott Askham (19-5) for the third time, headlining the massive June 3 card.

The event will take place at the PGE Narodowy in Warsaw, Poland, which housed the original KSW Colosseum event in 2017 — the largest MMA event in terms of attendance in European history, and second largest overall.

57,766 fans attended the 2017 spectacle.

Khalidov and Askham are 1-1 in their career series to date. Askham won the first meeting, at a catchweight, claiming a unanimous decision in the 2019 contest. The following year, Mamed Khalidov finished Scott Askham with a switch kick to reclaim the KSW middleweight championship.

Askham, a former UFC fighter and BAMMA middleweight champ, has not fought since. Khalidov would go on to lose the belt to Roberto Soldic, who recently jumped ship to ONE Championship. In his last outing, Khalidov moved to heavyweight, defeating former World’s Strongest Man and promotional stalwart Mariusz Pudzianowski.

Pudzianowski, for his part, will also appear at the KSW Colosseum 2 card. He’s been paired up with former boxer Artur Szpilka, who has shared the ring with the likes of Deontay Wilder.

The promotion’s next event, KSW 81, takes place April 22 in Tomaszów Mazowiecki, Poland.

Khalidov lost his belt to budding star Roberto Soldic in his last fight, the biggest fight in KSW history, while Pudzianowski entered this bout on a four fight winning streak, all finishes, and seemed to finally be putting his MMA game together after starting the sport late in life.

After a brief period of striking to open the KSW 77 main event it was Pudzianowski who entered the clinch where he held Khalidov for the opening minute. However the career middleweight was the one who got a takedown with an inside trip. Pudzianowski got back to his feet but not for long as Mamed once again took him down, this time into the stronger position of side control. Khalidov used knee-on-belly to open up with massive ground and pound. In response, Pudzianowski turned to his side and then turtled up, allowing his foe to keep throwing bombs. Khalidov then took the back with two hooks in and looked to keep doing damage.

It was not long before he flattened the former powerlifter out, throwing hard ground and pound all the while. The damage was so severe that Pudzianowski tapped to strikes, stopping the fight inside of two minutes and showing that, in this instance at least, technique beats size and power.

Mariusz Pudzianowski has, for years, been one of the pillars of the promotion. A winner of The World’s Strongest Man strongman competition years ago, “Pudzian” is a hulking heavyweight who has found considerable success crossing over from another sport. While he’s never won, or even fought, for a title, at heavyweight, it almost doesn’t matter: he puts butts in seats and wins more than he loses, with a 17-7, 1NC record heading into Saturday’s showdown with Mamed Khalidov.

When it comes to Khalidov, for years he was one of the best middleweight talents outside the UFC. Wins over Jesse Taylor, Kendall Grove, Maiquel Falcao, and Brett Cooper in the early days of the Polish promotion solidified his reputation, as did victories outside the promotion against Igor Pokrajac, Jason Guida, and Jorge Santiago.

Early on in the promotion’s history, Khalidov became the inaugural KSW light heavyweight champion. And while in recent years he struggled with catchweight bouts opposite Tomasz Narkun and Scott Askham before losing his middleweight title against Roberto Soldic, at 42 Khalidov’s skills remain a threat to all but the best in the organization.

Two title fights also adorned the KSW 77 card, with Sebastian Przybysz defending against Jakub Wiklacz, and Ibragim Chuzhigaev putting his belt on the line against Ivan Erslan.

On Wednesday, promotion officials announced via press release that heavyweight fan favorite and multi-time World’s Strongest Man winner Mariusz Pudzianowski will face ex-middleweight and light heavyweight champ Mamed Khalidov at the event on December 17, 2022.

Pudzianowski (17-7, 1NC), at age 45, is on the best win streak of his professional fighting career, having come out victorious in five straight match-ups. Most recently, he finished Michal Materla via KO at KSW 70.

All five of the Polish strongman’s most recent wins have come inside the distance, by way of KO/TKO.

42-year old Khalidov has had more of a struggle in recent years. Last time out, in December of 2021, he found himself knocked out by Roberto Soldic — the KSW double-champ who has since jumped ship to ONE Championship. Solic captured the promotion’s 185lb title in the bout.

Prior to that, Khalidov did earn a win over Scott Askham, to reclaim middleweight gold after losing three consecutive fights in 2018 to 2019.

From 2010 to 2018, however, Khalidov went undefeated in MMA, winning 14 straight fights against some of the best fighters not under contract with a major promotion at the time.

KSW 77 takes place in Gliwice, Poland on December 17, 2022 and features bantamweight champion Sebastian Przybysz (10-2) vs. Jakub Wikłacz (13-3-1) in the co-main event spot.
