Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic — If any fighter has taken advantage of joining Oktagon MMA following a UFC run, it’s Mallory Martin.

Martin went 1-3 in her UFC stint, but the former Invicta FC fighter then landed in Oktagon, losing her debut only to win her next four, including a rematch against Katharina Dalisda that earned the American the Oktagon MMA strawweight championship.

At Oktagon 70 over the weekend, Martin (11-6) defended her title for the first time in a one-sided scrap with Eva Dourthe.

“It just feels so good. You know you’re not a champion until you defend the belt, so I felt like I really did the job, and I feel like I am a champion now,” Martin told Cageside Press following the fight. “I’m just really proud of myself.”

Dalisda was supposed to have competed at Oktagon 70, and a win for the ex-champ would have built hype for a rubber match between her and Martin, given the pair’s career series sits at 1-1. Mallory Martin, for one, wasn’t worried that Dalisda pulled out of the event.

“I heard she got sick, and things happen. But going into this fight, even in the locker room, I kept telling myself I can do it, I can do it. But I also was saying, if Dalisda can do it, I can do it,” stated Martin. “Dalisda beat this girl twice. Why not me? Why not Mallory Martin? And so I just held that in my heart. I went out there last fight and I had a dominant performance against Dalisda, and Dalisda put away this girl twice. Why can’t I do what Dalisda did?”

Martin happens to be one of the few Americans competing for Oktagon MMA, which has become a key player in European MMA with sold out shows in Germany and the Czech Republic now a regular occurrence.

“Amazing. Amazing. I have no words for that, it’s really cool just to be able to travel the world and come out here and fight for the European fans,” Martin said of repping the U.S. in Oktagon. “And I feel like the European fans are ten times better than the American fans. So it’s just really cool to come out here and travel the world.”

Watch our full interview with Oktagon 70’s Mallory Martin, the promotion’s reigning strawweight champion, above.

Earlier in the night, meanwhile, Czech welterweight Andrej Kalašnik faced off against former title challenger Máté Kertész, looking to make his own run at gold.

The featured fight of the preliminary card, meanwhile, found champ Mallory Martin defending her women’s strawweight championship opposite Eva Dourthe. American Martin, an Invicta FC and UFC alum, had won three fights to start her run with Oktagon MMA and captured the promotion’s 115lb title opposite Katharina Dalisda back in October.

Mallory Martin is no longer a member of the UFC roster.

The 28-year old Martin (7-5) last competed in December, losing a unanimous decision against Cheyanne Vlismas. That fight marked the final bout on her contract with the company. The Denver, Colorado born fighter was not re-signed.

Twitter account UFC Roster Watch, an automated service that monitors changes to the promotion’s athlete database, first took note of the news on Tuesday.

Martin’s arrival in the UFC came following something of an interesting journey early in her career. Starting out 1-2, with one of those losses coming to future UFC prospect Maycee Barber, Martin worked her way up through Invicta FC, and appeared on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2019. She’d end up winning her fight on the show, but was not signed to a UFC deal, instead heading back to Invicta, where she picked up one more win later that year, in November.

A month later, she would make her UFC debut on short notice against former Invicta strawweight champ Virna Jandiroba. The bout did not go her way, with Jandiroba winning via submission. Martin then bounced back, defeating Hannah Cifers in August of 2020 by way of rear-naked choke.

Unfortunately, Martin dropped both of her fights in 2021, losing in a submission to Polyana Viana before dropping the aforementioned decision to Vlismas.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship kicked off December with a bang at UFC Vegas 44.

An action-packed card through-and-through, the ESPN event headlined by Rob Font vs. Jose Aldo delivered and then some. Which resulted in a little extra cash being handed out come bonus time.

Though Dana White was not in attendance, someone at the executive level was clearly impressed — as were fans. Names like Clay Guida, Chris Curtis, and others continued to impress, resulting in four Performance of the Night awards being dished out Saturday, plus the usual Fight of the Night bonus.

The latter went to the women’s strawweight battle between Cheyanne Vlismas and Mallory Martin. Vlismas appeared to have the edge in speed, and out-struck her opponent, but Martin hung in there every step of the way in the preliminary card fight. To add to the drama, the pair had been friendly outside the octagon, and Vlismas later revealed she’d been going through personal problems ahead of the fight, even making reference to hitting rock bottom.

Performance of the Night awards went to the aforementioned Guida and Curtis, plus Jamahal Hill and Rafael Fiziev. For Guida, the money comes after what will likely be in the running for the Comeback of the Year award. Guida seemingly ate knees to the face until opponent Leonardo Santos simply gassed out. He then came storming back in the second round of their lightweight fight to put Santos away via submission.

Curtis, meanwhile, landed his second finish in as many months, putting away Brendan Allen and cashing in as a huge underdog in the process. Fighting up in weight has looked good for Curtis, with the welterweight taking his first two bouts inside the octagon at 185lbs.

Jamahal Hill knocked Jimmy Crute down early in their main card light heavyweight bout on Saturday. It was a second knockdown that sealed the deal, however, with a single follow-up strike barely necessary. Brad Riddell, meanwhile, landed a wheel kick in the co-main event that sent opponent and friend Brad Riddell stumbling, forcing ref Herb Dean to make a well-timed save.

All six bonus-winning fighters will pocket an extra $50,000 USD for their efforts.

After having a bout fall through just weeks ago at UFC Vegas 43, Cheyanne Vlismas was back in action Saturday at the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s very next event — where she took on Denver native Mallory Martin.

Their strawweight showdown at UFC Vegas 44 saw Martin looking to bounce back from a loss to Polyana Viana back in February. Vlismas was entering the fight with a bit of steam, meanwhile, having finished Glorida de Paula with a head kick this past July.

Cheyanne opened the action with a number of high kicks, and got her hands going shortly after. Martin targeted the body and kept the pressure on Vlismas, who stayed busy, constantly moving. Vlismas appeared to have the speed advantage, but both girls were finding success through the opening two minutes.

Things settle in just a little in the second half of the round, as the pair found their rhythm. Vlismas’ speed advantage may have given her the edge, as Martin was force to chase her opponent just a little too often. They’d clinch a bit in the final minute, both landing, and Vlismas waved her opponent on at the end of the frame.

Round two saw Vlismas on her horse again on the outside. Mallory was throwing hard, and pulling out all the stops, even adding in a spinning back fist. Unfortunately, that sailed way wide; Vlismas, a moment later, landed a counter right hand off another Martin attack. With two minutes left in the frame, Martin closed the distance for a body lock, looking for a takedown. Vlismas fought that off, and by the end of the round, Martin’s nose was showing damage, and she was almost certainly down two rounds.

The third round was more of the same. Martin tried to find the takedown early, but couldn’t; she’d been stuffed on each and every attempt. Vlismas stayed mobile, and when the pair traded, she was getting the better of the exchanges. Her counters found their target more often than not, and the evidence thereof was chiseled all over the face of Mallory Martin by the end of the fight.

Official Result: Cheyanne Vlismas def. Mallory Martin by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

A women’s strawweight scrap booked for the UFC’s December 4 event will see Montserrat Ruiz and Mallory Martin face off.

Ruiz (10-2) and Martin (7-4) will both be looking to get back in the win column at the event, which is expected to be a Fight Night card. Cageside Press confirmed the booking Tuesday, following an initial report by ESPN Deportes.

Mexico’s Ruiz last fought in July, where she fell to the surging Amanda Lemos via TKO. “Conejo” (rabbit) joined the promotion earlier this year, stepping in as a short-notice replacement against Cheyanne Buys. She immediately turned heads for her trademark bunny ears at weigh-in, and for an incident following the Buys fight where her opponent accused her of spitting. Ruiz later denied the allegation.

Prior to her time in the UFC, Ruiz competed for Invicta FC, and captured a couple of regional titles at home in Mexico.

Mallory Martin is 1-2 in the UFC to date, and like Montserrat Ruiz will enter the December 4 card off a loss in her most recent fight. That saw Martin submitted by a Polyana Vianna arm-bar.

The UFC’s December 4 Fight Night event has had only two other bouts reported for it to date, both in the lightweight division. Those are:

Chris Gruetzemacher vs. Claudio Puelles
Rafael Fiziev vs. Brad Riddell

No location, venue, or broadcast plan has been announced, but the Apex in Las Vegas is a safe bet.

The strawweight scrap saw both fighters looking to build modest win streaks after picking up victories in their previous outings.

In the end, it didn’t take long for the fight to play out — mostly on the ground.

The two traded early with a lot of forward movement from Mallory Martin. Less than a minute into the fight, Martin caught a kick from Viana and pushed for a takedown. Viana conceded, even seeming to jump guard. Viana began working right away off of her back. She attacked with a triangle and locked it in. It was tight — and Martin was stuck in it for a while. Martin worked several escapes to get out – using a slam, cuting an angle, rolling. Nothing seemed to work. Still, Martin hung in there. Ultimately, Viana switched things up to an arm bar, and got the tap early on.

UFC Vegas 8 was the first event in some time that involved zero knockouts, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t plenty of hurt passed out this past weekend. In fact, thirteen fighters in all saw their name on the board and, as a result, on the shelf for a little while.

The longest of the suspensions were handed down to Ji-Yeon Kim and Polyana Viana, both of whom got 180 days for their troubles. Viana, in her submission victory over Emily Whitmire, damaged her right thumb. Kim, on the other hand, suffered a right orbital fracture that’ll leave her with six months off. It’s worth noting that these fighters can have their medical suspensions lessened with clearance from and MRI/x-ray or from a oral and maxillofacial surgeon respectively.

Also worth noting is the suspension of Mallory Martin. Her right knee, which she has had problems with in the past made its way on to the medical suspensions list. While she is only asked to take 60 days off, NSAC did request that she have an MRI on the knee and implemented further suspension should that MRI come back positive. There is no report at the moment as to whether that has been scheduled and/or the results.

Full list of suspensions:

Anthony Smith – 45 days
Neil Magny – 45 days or until Doctor’s clearance on right elbow cut.
Robbie Lawler – 45 days
Ji-Yeon Kim – 180 days or until right orbital fracture cleared by oral and maxillofacial surgeon clears.
Ricardo Lamas – 30 days
Impa Kasanganay – 45 days or until Doctor’s clearance on right eye laceration.
Maki Pitolo – 45 days
Alessio Di Chirico – 45 days
Christian Aguilara – 45 days
Polyana Viana – 180 days unless cleared by MRI and x-ray of right thumb.
Emily Whitmire – 30 days
Mallory Martin – 60 days, but must have MRI of right knee. If positive then increases to 180 days.
Hannah Cifers – 30 days or until Doctor’s clearance on nose cut.
