UFC women’s bantamweight Lina Lansberg has announced her retirement from mixed martial arts.

Lansberg (10-8), 40, was submitted by Mayra Bueno Silva at UFC Vegas 69 this past weekend. The setback marked her fourth consecutive loss inside the octagon.

The Swedish fighter subsequently announced her retirement on social media.

“Thank you so much for all the love and support. This has been a hell of a ride and to start fighting is the best thing I’ve ever done. It has given me so so much,” wrote Lansberg. “But now it’s time to move on. I’m done.”

Lansberg got her start in Muay Thai, collecting several amateur accolades in the mid-2000s and later claiming the WMC Scandinavian Professional Muay Thai Championship in 2012. That same year, she crossed over into MMA, losing her professional debut against future UFC contemporary Pannie Kianzad.

Lansberg, known as the “Elbow Queen” for obvious reasons, won her next six fights, including a bout with another future UFC fighter, Lucie Pudilova. She was then brought into the UFC for a catchweight fight with Cris Cyborg, at a time when the promotion had not yet introduced the 145lb title for women.

Following the Cyborg fight, Lansberg would post a 4-2 record, defeating TUF 28 winner Macy Chiasson and former Invicta FC champ Tonya Evinger, among others. She then ran into former bantamweight title challenger and Olympian Sara McMann in 2020, losing a decision.

That loss was her last fight for roughly two years, as Lansberg took time off to give birth. She returned to action last year, losing a rematch with Kianzad, as well as to Karol Rosa.

Outside the UFC, Lina Lansberg was a Superior Challenge women’s bantamweight champion.

At age 40, Sweden’s “Elbow Queen” Lina Lansberg was looking to snap a three-fight skid at UFC Vegas 60. Opposite her was Brazil’s Mayra Bueno Silva, hunting for her third straight win.

The action was barely underway Saturday night when an eye poke by Lansberg halted the action. Silva was given time to recover, while the ref warned Lansberg. A minute or so later, things were back underway. Silva fired a spinning kick to the midsection, but Lansberg fought through it.

Silva continued to press, targeting the body further. Lansberg had her back to the cage, trying to circle before finally pressing forward. That was answered by a low kick by Silva. Landberg got to live up to her name, however, in a clinch, landing an elbow off the break. But Silva backed the Swede up with low kicks again, then ripped the body. Leg kicks and body shots were key to Silva’s early offense. Silva began mixing in knees in the clinch. One clinch later, it was Lansberg with an elbow. Another clinch attempt by Lansberg moments later led to Silva driving her into the fence, dropping for a takedown. She stayed on it, landed it, and threatened at passing to side control before the buzzer sounded.

Round two saw the air clinch early. Knees were exchanged before Silva landed a spinning elbow out of the break. That was followed up with a takedown, which saw Silva go to work from half-guard. She worked on getting up an arm-triangle choke, but couldn’t pull her leg through. Instead, Lansberg gave up her back. From there, Silva looked to set up an arm-bar, and tried to flatten her out. When that didn’t work, Mayra Bueno Silva landed some nasty elbows, got a body triangle locked on, and went hunting for the rear-naked choke.

Surprisingly, Lansberg was able to escape the body triangle. Back to her feet, she then made a critical mistake, moving back into range of Silva, who was still on the ground. Silva grabbed a leg, dragged Lansberg down, locked up a kneebar and forced the tap!

After the fight, Silva said she had one question, asking why Raquel Pennington deserved a title shot over her. As for what’s next, Miesha Tate or Pennington were both names Silva had in mind.

Official Result: Mayra Bueno Silva def. Lina Lansberg by submission (kneebar), Round 2, 4:45

Women’s bantamweight action will take place at a UFC Fight Night card on February 18, 2023.

Lina Lansberg (10-7) is expected to face Mayra Bueno Silva (9-2-1) at the event, currently set for the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Cageside Press recently confirmed the booking with a source familiar with the situation, following an initial report by AgFight.

The match-up brings together two fighters on distinctly different trajectories of late. Brazil’s Silva has won her last two outings, picking up wins over Wu Yanan and most recently, Stephanie Egger. The Yanan fight marked the return to bantamweight for “Sheetara,” and also earned her Fight of the Night honors. Against Egger, Bueno Silva picked up an arm-bar submission win in little over a minute.

Lansberg, on the other hand, has been mired in a slump that has seen her drop decisions to Sara McMann, Pannie Kianzad, and Karol Rosa. “The Elbow Queen” has not won a fight since a 2019 decision victory over TUF 28 winner Macy Chiasson. Now 40, the Swedish fighter has posted a 4-6 record overall since joining the UFC in 2016, when she was brought in for a catchweight fight with Cris Cyborg.

The UFC’s February 18, 2023 Fight Night card currently has the following match-ups reported:

Nazim Sadykhov vs. Evan Elder

Billy Goff vs. Themba Gorimbo

Juancamilo Ronderos vs. Clayton Carpenter

Joe Solecki vs. Benoît Saint-Denis

Gerald Meerschaert vs. Abusupiyan Magomedov

Jim Miller vs. Gabriel Benítez

William Knight vs. Marcin Prachnio

Lina Länsberg vs. Mayra Bueno Silva

Abu Dhabi, UAE – Kicking off the UFC 280 card bright and early on Saturday (for those not in Abu Dhabi, anyway) were women’s bantamweights Karol Rosa and Lina Lansberg.

Both ladies were looking to return to the win column, but a victory was especially crucial for Lansberg, who had lost two straight. The “Elbow Queen” needed to avoid the dreaded 3-fight losing streak.

Rosa meanwhile came off a loss that snapped a 4-fight win streak. She looked to right the ship at UFC 280 on Saturday night.

Round 1 began with Lansberg taking a very conservative approach to the fight and being wary of Rosa’s power. Lansberg landed a right hand that dropped Rosa for a second, but then the Brazilian took Lansberg down quickly and kept her there for the remainder of the round.

Round 2 was more of the same until, in the midst of trying to get back to her feet, Lansberg got caught with an illegal knee to the head. After a couple minutes to discussion with the ref and the doctor Lansberg chose to continue. Ref took a point from Rosa who, as soon as the fight restarted took Lansberg down and kept her there.

Round 3 Lansberg came out aggressive knowing she needs a finish to win this fight. She put pressure on Rosa forcing her to fight on the fence and trading positions and knees. Most of the round stayed on the fence but at the very end the two traded as the fight ended.

Official Result: Karol Rosa def. Lina Lansberg via majority decision (29-27, 29-27, 28-28)

Women’s bantamweights were in action on the UFC Vegas 51 preliminary card, with Pannie Kianzad paired up with “Elbow Queen” Lina Lansberg.

Invicta vet Kianzad had recently seen a four-fight win streak snapped by Raquel Pennington, and was looking to return to the win column against Lansberg, who had lost her last bout to Sara McMann.

The fight was a rematch, with Lansberg having lost to Kianzad a decade ago, in her professional debut.

Some feeling out on the feet started out the bantamweight bout, before Lansberg and Kianzad moved to the fence, reversing position a couple of times. Lansberg added a few knees, and finally Kianzad reversed again and escaped back to center.

Lansberg, however, bullied her right back to the fence again. But Pannie would take a body lock from the back, hooking a leg as well. If the fight was to continue in this grueling, grinding style, that was the sort of approach Pannie would need. Lansberg, meanwhile, was stuck with Pannie on her back, or at least halfway there. Eventually, she went down, with Kianzad working all the way to the back. With a minute left in the round, Kianzad was in the driver’s seat, though a submission was never really close. She managed to land a number of strikes from the back, however.

Round two saw the pair go right back to the fence, but they didn’t stay there. Instead they worked their way back to center, then to the other side of the cage. Kianzad ripped the body with Lansberg against the fence and went upstairs before they separated again. Coming out of that sequence, Landberg was bloodied, badly. She pressed Pannie up against the cage, but couldn’t get the takedown; instead they traded knees. Off the break, the ref called time to have the doctor come in and check Lansberg’s cut. A quick examination, and she was allowed to continue — immediately driving in on a takedown attempt only to be reversed and put up against the cage once more.

Lansberg’s biggest moment came off the break, where, after an extended beatdown, she managed to fire an elbow that dropped Pannie, shortly before the end of the frame.

In the third, it was right back to the clinch. Kianzad won that battle, firing a punch off the break. The pair then traded at range, both fighters landing. Kianzad landed, they clinched, and Pannie landed a knee. Unlike the first two frames, the bulk of round three would actually play out in the open. Both women would find success as the fight wrapped up, but Kianzad, by winning the clinch battles, beat Lansberg at her own game.

Official Result: Pannie Kianzad def. Lina Lansberg by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

It’s been nearly 10 years since Pannie Kianzad and Lina Lansberg first faced off on the regional scene. Now, under the UFC banner, the bantamweight pair will meet for the second time.

Kianzad (15-6) and Lansberg (10-5) are set to face off at a UFC Fight Night event on April 16, 2022. Kianzad confirmed the booking on social media following an initial report by FrontKick Online.

The pair’s first meeting came early in their respective careers. It was Kianzad’s third fight as a professional; for Lansberg, her first. Pannie Kianzad won the bout via TKO.

Despite that, it was Lansberg who landed in the UFC first. She joined the promotion in 2016 as a potential foil for Cris Cyborg, competing at a 140lb catchweight in a losing effort before moving to bantamweight.

Lansberg missed all of 2021, and is coming off a loss to Sara McMann in January of 2020, making it over two years between fights for the Swedish “Elbow Queen.” Prior to the McMann loss, Lansberg had a very successful 2019, picking up wins over both TUF 28 winner Macy Chiasson, and former Invicta FC champ Tonya Evinger.

Kianzad earned her spot in the UFC as part of The Ultimate Fighter 28, competing as a featherweight. After losing in the final against Macy Chiasson, she picked up a win on the regional scene, then returned to the promotion, where she has posted a 4-2 record since 2019.

Most recently, Kianzad had a four-fight win streak snapped when she lost a unanimous decision against Raquel Pennington.

The UFC’s April 16, 2022 Fight Night event does not yet have a venue, location, or broadcast plan officially announced. The following fights have been reported for the card:

Vicente Luque vs. Belal Muhammad
Drakkar Klose vs. Brandon Jenkins
Miguel Baeza vs. Dhiego Lima
Jesse Ronson vs. Rafa García
Chris Barnett vs. Martin Buday
Caio Borralho vs. Gadzhi Omargadzhiev
Lina Länsberg vs. Pannie Kianzad

After nearly two years away from the UFC, Sara McMann cruised to an easy victory over Lina Lansberg at UFC Raleigh.

It’s been over a year since Sara McMann was last seen in the UFC. In her time away, she gave birth to her son, and on Saturday night, made her way back to the octagon for the first time since February 2018. Welcoming her back was the always gritty Lina Lansberg.

Time waits for no man or woman. In McMann’s absence, Amanda Nunes had solidified her stranglehold on the 135lb division. At 39-years old, the former Olympian, who challenged Ronda Rousey for gold in 2014, had precious little time to prove her continued relevance. She was also looking to snap a two-fight losing streak, while Lansberg entered the night off two straight wins.

Here is how the play by play went down:

Round 1:

The Olympic silver medalist opened the action with a single leg takedown. McMann pinned Lansberg against the canvas with heavy top control. She fired off tons of hard body shots to try to pass Lansberg’s half guard. When the Swedish fighter attempted to get up, the former title challenger locked in a D’Arce choke. It looked like she might get the submission win, but Lansberg fought out of it. McMann then went to a Kimura but couldn’t separate Lansberg’s arm from her body as the round came to an end.

Cageside Press scored the round 10-9 McMann.

Round 2:

McMann shot in for a takedown but Lansberg briefly defended it. Unfortunately for the Elbow Queen, she didn’t get her hips back and McMann was able to grab double underhooks and inside tripped her to the canvas. For the remainder of the round, McMann just kept Lansberg pressed against the canvas with heavy top pressure. She gained full mount with ten seconds left in the round but didn’t land any strikes before the round ended.

Cageside Press scored the round 10-9 McMann

Round 3:

McMann grabbed double underhooks and took Lansberg down immediately. This time she landed in side control. The Swedish fighter scrambled and McMann took her back. With both hooks in, McMann hit her with some hard strikes. She kept switching back and forth between looking for the rear-naked choke and striking until the round and fight came to an end.

Cageside Press scored the round 10-9 McMann and the fight 30-27 McMann.

Official Results: Sara McMann def. Lina Lansberg by unanimous decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-25)

Former 135lb title challenger and Olympic silver medalist Sara McMann returns to the octagon at UFC Raleigh against Lina Lansberg.

A bantamweight clash between Sara McMann and Lina Lansberg is the latest addition to the UFC Raleigh card. On Wednesday, the UFC announced via social media that the pairing was official, with McMann returning from an extended layoff, and Lansberg looking to make it three wins in a row.

McMann (11-5), a silver medalist at the Olympics in Athens, Greece in 2004, is a former title challenger at 135lbs. She went up against Ronda Rousey at UFC 170 in 2014, coming up short (as so many did) when Rousey finished the fight with a TKO set up by a knee to the body.

McMann would bounce back against Lauren Murphy, then lose a pair of fights to Miesha Tate and Amanda Nunes, two future champions themselves. Following that she embarked on a three-fight win streak, but has dropped her last two, to Ketlen Vieira and Marion Reneau.

McMann has not set foot in the cage since her loss to Reneau at UFC on FOX 28 in February 2018. During her time away, she gave birth to a son, and also dealt with injuries, which led to her pulling out of a bout with Nicco Montaño earlier this year.

Lina Lansberg (10-4) will enter UFC Raleigh off wins over Tonya Evinger and Macy Chiasson, making her 2-0 for 2019. The ‘Elbow Queen’ is 4-3 in the promotion overall, with losses to Cris Cyborg, Aspen Ladd, and Yana Kunitskaya, and additional wins over Lucie Pudilová and Gina Mazany.

UFC Raleigh (UFC Fight Night 166) will be the promotion’s first trip to the North Carolina city. The card is headlined by Junior Dos Santos facing Curtis Blaydes, while Frankie Edgar vs. Cory Sandhagen serves as the co-main event.

The show unfolds January 25, 2020 at the PNC Arena in Raleigh, NC.

Lina Lansberg entered UFC Copenhagen the biggest underdog on the card, and ended up handing Macy Chiasson the first loss of her career.

Ultimate Fighter 28 winner Macy Chiasson was looking to stay perfect at UFC Copenhagen on Saturday. Chiasson, who entered the fight 5-0 as a pro, had won the show at featherweight but had been making the cut to bantamweight since the reality series concluded. Opposite her in the octagon in Denmark, the always game Lina Lansberg.

As the fight got going, Chiasson landed a few right hands, before moving into the clinch. Chiasson looked very big in the clinch and landed some knees to Lansberg’s midsection. Lansberg tried to separate but she couldn’t keep Chiasson off of her. Chiasson kept peppering Lansberg with knees to the body and was dominating Lansberg in the clinch. That’s where all the action happened in round one before the horn sounded.

Lansberg got Chiasson’s back in the clinch to start round two, leading Chiasson to roll for a kneebar. However, Lansberg slipped out and ended up on top. Chiasson looked for a kimura from the bottom, but Lansberg slipped out of that as well. Chiasson was able to get back to her feet, and get back to the clinch and began landing the same knees from round one. Chiasson briefly separated to land a combination before again jumping back into the clinch. Chiasson’s corner was screaming at her to separate, but Lansberg wasn’t letting her. They ended the round in the clinch, much like round one.

Chiasson came out throwing strikes to begin the third round, and Lansberg quickly got it to the clinch, before getting the takedown. Chiasson looked for a kimura off her back but couldn’t get it. Lansberg moved to side control and began landing punches. Chiasson would power out of it and end up in the clinch. The two would then trade knees and elbows in the clinch before the third round came to a close.

In the end, a big upset, with Lansberg taking two rounds!

Result: Lina Lansberg def. Macy Chiasson via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-27)
