One of a handful of newcomers on the UFC Jacksonville card on Saturday was Chepe Mariscal, stepping up to face Trevor Peek.

Mariscal was filling in for Victor Martinez, taking the tried and true path of salvaging a fight to earn his spot in the UFC. And if you’d paid attention to the lightweight prospect, you knew you were in for something special.

That’s just what fans got at UFC Jacksonville, with one of the best fights of the year playing out on the preliminary card.

Mariscal opened up the fight with a series of kicks mixing it up. Soon after he caught Peek coming in with a counter right. Peek got inside and started throwing heavy blows creating a dogfight. Mariscal hit a judo throw but Peek jumped up quickly and was throwing away. Mariscal hurt Peek in the clinch with a knee and hit another hip toss and then got onto the back. For a moment he looked like he had the RNC but Peek escaped and got back to his feet. Peek was marching forward throwing big kicks and looping punches that did seem to stun Mariscal briefly. At one point, Peek was throwing his patented standing hammer fists, throwing caution to the wind before Mariscal got another takedown. Peek did scramble but Mariscal was able to win the top position and ended the round with Peek getting to his feet. Pure madness in the first round.

In round two things started a little slower. Mariscal landed a good counter strike as Peek clinched up. Clinching had been a problem for Peek as Mariscal scored another easy takedown. Peek did get back to his feet and landed a few heavy shots to the body. Peek was extremely tired just slipping to the mat and letting Mariscal mount him. Mariscal was sloppy on the back falling off letting Peek on top. Mariscal was able to cut the corner and create a scramble getting on top and back to the feet. To close the round Mariscal landed a few good knees and a nice left hand in the clinch.

In the final round Peek had the first big moment with some clubbing punches putting Mariscal against the cage. Peek was still coming forward throwing hammers. It came at a cost as Mariscal was the one landing clean but Peek was insanely tough taking everything. Mariscal was the cleaner striker however landing the one-two and catching Peek as he was coming forward. Mariscal landed a good front kick to the face which Peek just ate no problem. With a minute left Peek landed some good power shots. It was Mariscal that ended the fight in a big way landing a front kick and a series of output that almost put Peek away. Amazing scrap both and a brilliant effort put forth by both men — but it was Chepe Mariscal coming away with the victory.

Official Result: Chepe Mariscal def. Trevor Peek by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Originally slated to face Victor Martinez at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena, undefeated lightweight Trevor Peek (8-0, 1NC) will instead get a replacement opponent in Jose Mariscal (13-6). Sedrique Dumas (7-1), meanwhile, had been scheduled to face Punahele Soriano, but with the Hawaiian withdrawing from the fight, “SD” Dumas now takes on Cody Brundage (8-4).

No specific reason was given for the removal of either fighter from their respective bouts. UFC Jacksonville’s main card is set to air on broadcast network ABC, making the event UFC on ABC 5. Bu there are plenty of MMA prospects in action on the regional scene as well, with LFA and Brazil’s Future FC in action.

Future FC 11 | Friday | Brazil

Featherweight: Gabriel Alves Braga (4-0)

Only 4-0 and 21-years-old, Gabriel Alves Barga has really impressed. He has a solid ground game with his ground-and-pound but prefers to stay standing. Braga is very technical as he loves to throw from all different kinds of angles. He throws a bit of everything including knees and elbows, and puts all his strikes together perfectly. Braga rips the body frequently and he mixes that into combinations very well. He’s always throwing output, mixing in all his weapons. He fights Loibe de Oliveira Neto (4-0).

LFA 80 | Friday | US

Featherweight: Steve Garcia Jr. (10-3)

Steve Garcia Jr. is coming off a win last Summer on the Contender Series and although he looked good, he missed weight, which was certainly a factor in not getting a UFC contract. He’s had problems with his takedown defense in the past but the Jackson-Wink MMA product is improving with time. The tall rangy striker is a dangerous guy with power in his hands. Garcia also has good combinations he throws and some good footwork compliments his stand-up. He fights Jose Mariscal (10-4).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1O5VNRHBosE

Featherweight, Jose Mariscal (10-4)

After a loss to current UFC standout Gregor Gillespie, Jose Mariscal made the move down to featherweight from lightweight. One of his three losses is to another current UFC fighter, Bryce Mitchell, in what was a close decision. Since then, he is 4-1-1, and his competition throughout his career has been high level. He’s very well-rounded with a good kickboxing base and solid BJJ. Learn more about him here. He fights Steve Garcia Jr. (10-3).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZgUIwA4lvo

Lightweight: Chris Brown (5-1)

Chris Brown is a bit awkward in his output, especially with the way he slings his kicks around with his hands low. With that said, it’s worked in his favor through his career. It’s hard to tell what Brown is going to throw as he mixes his kicks and punches together very well. He’s just so diverse on the feet you may forget he’s a solid wrestler as well being a former state wrestling champion. He fights the very good Carrington Banks (8-2).

Fight Exclusive Night 27 | Saturday | Poland

Lightweight: Mateusz Rebecki (10-1)

Mateusz Rebecki is a BJJ black belt and is a two-time gold medalist in ADCC (Poland). He trains out of Berserker Team with fighters like Michal Materla, Tomasz Narkun, and many more established veterans. Rebecki is a former Fight Exclusive Night lightweight champion, which is a solid promotion out of Poland. Rebecki is a bit one-dimensional being solely a grappler but in that area, he’s just so dangerous and that’s on top or bottom. He fights Magomed Magomedov (12-1).

Elite 1 MMA: Fight Night 37

Welterweight: Christien Savoie (7-0)

Christien Savoie looked at last Summer for Dana White’s Contender Series. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out, but Savoie remains a fighter that would be great for the show. Savoie is mainly a grinder who will push the pace in close quarters. He wants to take the fight to the mat where his ground and pound is excellent, landing at a solid rate with good shots from a short amount of distance. He fights Pat Carroll (4-1).

We’re back once again with the Weekly MMA Prospect Report – with Bellator in Birmingham, LFA 65 set to unfold, and more great action expected!

Here’s who to watch out for in our latest Weekly MMA Prospect Report. This week, you can find the three prospects with the highest ceiling highlighted with an asterisk. ONE, Bellator, the UFC, and LFA all had events set for the weekend — here’s who to keep an eye on, on the prospect side.

300 Sparta 31 | Tuesday | Peru

Bantamweight, Daniel Marcos (11-0)

Daniel Marcos is one of the best prospects out of Peru, with an impressive record over some decent regional competition. Marcos is an aggressive fighter who will move forward and throw volume. While he doesn’t have power, he will let his hands go and throws a lot of heavy leg kicks. His wrestling is very good as well, and he has good ground-and-pound. He fights Genison Lima (4-7).

LFA 65 | Friday | Colorado

Featherweight, Jose Mariscal (9-3)

After a loss to current UFC standout Gregor Gillespie, Jose made the move down to featherweight from lightweight. One of his three losses is to another current UFC fighter, Bryce Mitchell, in what was a close decision. Since then, he is 3-0-1, and his competition throughout his career has been high level. He’s very well-rounded with a good kickboxing base and solid BJJ. Learn more about him here. He fights Joanderson Brito (10-2-1)

Featherweight, Joanderson Brito (10-2-1)

The Brazilian has been on a roll since his last loss in 2015, going 9-0-1 in his last ten fights. Brito is a bull walking his foes down and throwing huge looping hooks with big power. He’s a power striker on the feet, but has some good wrestling and better top position to fall back on. He fights Jose Mariscal (9-3)

TGC | Friday | Georgia

Lightweight, Marif Piraev (27-2)

First of all his record won’t go unnoticed with 27 wins and only two losses – and at only 26 years old. Those losses were to the undefeated KSW lightweight champ Mateusz Gamrot and to top prospect Tofik Musaev. Piraev spends a lot of his fight time on the feet where you can see him looking for a big shot while throwing many step in knees, flying knees, and head kicks — which he disguises well with his movement. He moves in and out deftly, exploding with punches and then back out quickly. His record boasts ten submissions, and all that is set up by his well-executed wrestling. Piraev could tighten up his takedown defense which would be his one flaw. He fights Rakhmanbek Abdurakhmanov (0-0).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIC6XutRmSU

EFC Worldwide 79 | Saturday | South Africa

*Featherweight, Igeu Kabesa (11-1)

Igeu Kabesa is a very decorated wrestler being a ten-time Wrestling Nationals Champion. He is young (25) and is solid everywhere making him one of the top prospects out of South Africa. Kabesa has amazing wrestling and grappling, he can move well on the mat and can get into mount fairly easy. His striking is crisp too, moving in-and-out with explosive punches quickly. His only loss is to UFC fighter Danny Henry which was a rematch from the pair’s first meeting, which Kabesa won. He defends his EFC title against Karlo Caput (8-0), who lacks footage.

RCC 6 | Saturday | Russia

*Bantamweight, Victor Henry (17-4)

Victor Henry has shown he’s well-rounded, to go along with his successful background in catch wrestling. He thrives in scrambles and hunts for submissions actively, being well-versed on the mat. His striking is getting better with a solid base of kickboxing. Henry has never looked better and has key wins over current UFC fighter Anderson Dos Santos, and good prospects in Kyler Phillips, Denis Lavrentyev, and many more. He fights Nikita Chistyakov (11-4-1) where Henry should prove the better wrestler.

Lightweight, Pavel Gordeev (13-1)

Pavel Gordeev has shown he is a promising prospect, beating four undefeated fighters, former UFC fighter Mickael Lebout, and other solid competition. Gordeev is mainly a striker who loves to use the jab often. The Russian has good long straight punches and his speed can be a real factor. His wrestling is decent enough to be effective with good scrambles and an active ground game. He fights former UFC fighter Shane Campbell (15-7), who he should beat.

Welterweight, Nikolay Aleksakhin (23-5)

Aleksakhin has only lost to high caliber fighters, including to UFC fighter and multi-promotion champ Ben Askren. Now he is on a five fight win streak with victories over Mike Graves, Dominique Steele, and Elias Silverio, who are all former UFC fighters. Aleksakhin is an excellent talent who is solid all around. He has superb timing with big power in everything he throws. The Russian does a great job throwing his strikes and kicks together, and has proven that once he lets go, he’s dangerous in bursts. He fights former UFC fighter Jonavin Webb (12-3), a talented fighter who should be a good test for Nikolay.

Bellator Birmingham | Saturday | UK

Lightweight, Tim Wilde (12-3)

Wilde is an excellent striker on the feet. He switches stances often and cuts angles better than almost anyone. Wilde is quick, his timing is perfect and he shows great in-cage awareness. He has been taken down before but you never see him staying on his back as his scrambling ability is terrific, and his takedown defense isn’t bad at all. Even with all the striking credentials he has, Wilde can use his wrestling skills when needed. He fights Brent Primus (8-1) at Bellator: Birmingham, where Wilde is a big underdog.

*Middleweight, Fabian Edwards (6-0)

Edwards has excellent distance management, using effective footwork and speed to stay on the outside. Edwards throws single strikes at times, but makes up for it with crazy explosiveness and athleticism, as well as his speed. That allows him to fire straight punches quickly and with just so much power. He’s also the younger brother of UFC welterweight contender Leon Edwards. He fights Falco Neto Lopes (10-9).

Welterweight, Giorgio Pietrini (16-4-1)

Pietrini is arguably the best fighter out of Italy, with an impressive record and still only 27 years old. On the feet, he has a good jab and straight punches. He has power in his hands but he usually strikes to wrestle so he can get top position. Pietrini is at home on the mat in top position where he holds multiple submissions, but he’s excellent at finishing fights with his ground and pound. He fights former UFC fighter Jim Wallhead (30-11), who Pietrini should beat.

The Contender Series is set to return, now airing on ESPN+ — but which prospects are likely to turn up on the third installment of the show?

Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series was recently confirmed as returning for a third season, not that there was ever any question. As an entry path into the UFC, the show has proven popular thus far. The third season will kick off in June or July, and interest should be high.

Last week, we looked at 25 prospects who deserved to be a part of the show. Now, we have 22 more deserving names. Left out will be fighters that fought on the previous two seasons, though some may return.

Punahele Soriano

Middleweight | 26 | Oahu, Hawaii | 5-0 | 3 KO/TKO, 2 Submissions

Punahele Soriano really had a breakthrough year last year with three big wins. He fought for V3, Titan FC, and LFA. He trains out of a good camp in Xtreme Couture and that has led him to an undefeated career with a 100-percent finish rate, ending all of his fights in the first round. Soriano has a background in wrestling and has shown that in his MMA career thus far. He has heavy hands but has wasted no time getting his fights to the mat and pounding away with very sound striking.

Victor Henry

Bantamweight | 31 | Los Angeles, California | 17-4 | Win Streak: 5 | 4 KO/TKO, 6 Submissions

Victor Henry came into 2018 with a 1-3 record in his last four fights, but ended up going 4-0 for the year. He has never looked better and has key wins over current UFC fighters Anderson dos Santos and Kyler Phillips. Henry has shown he’s well-rounded to go along with his a successful background in catch-wrestling. He thrives in scrambles and hunts for submissions actively, being well-versed on the mat. His striking is getting better with a solid base of kickboxing.

Kyle Crutchmer

Welterweight | 25 | San Jose, California | 4-0 | 1 KO/TKO, 2 Submissions

Kyle Crutchmer has a background in wrestling with a very successful Division 1 career at Oklahoma State University. He was a two-time All-American and a two-time Big 12 champion. Based on what’s out there on Kyle, he obviously has excellent wrestling. He’s also shown good and active ground-and-pound. He’s a guy that I’m shocked Bellator hasn’t signed but it would be a big move from the UFC.

Julius Anglickas

Light Heavyweight | 27 | St. Charles, Missouri | 6-1 | Win Streak: 5 | 3 KO/TKO, 3 Submissions

Julius Anglickas is born in Lithuania and is now residing in St. Louis. Anglickas was a Division 1 college football player for Oregon State. He’s a solid wrestler with good set-ups and execution. The Lithuanian is a dominant wrestler with top-level grappling and active ground-and-pound. He’s got some really good jiu-jitsu for a 205er. Last February, he won the LFA light heavyweight title. That is likely his ticket to the Contender Series.

Cole Ferrell

Featherweight | 26 | Atlanta, Georgia | 7-0 | 1 KO/TKO, 6 Submissions

Cole Ferrell hasn’t been touched in his professional career and has rarely ever been in any kind of trouble. Ferrell has shown glimpses of power in his hands but is a good wrestler with a very solid ground game. He has shown that he has a tight grip when he gets the neck, hence why his six submission wins have all come by way of a choke. Ferrell, only at 25, has a lot of things going right for him in his career as of now and is slowly making a name for himself. If there is one knock on Cole Ferrell, it would be that he needs a step up in competition. That would be available to him on the Contender Series.

Hannah Goldy

Flyweight | 26 | Tampa, Florida | 4-0 | 1 KO/TKO

In her pro debut, Hannah Goldy beat Gillian Robertson who is now a current UFC fighter and 3-1 in the Octagon. Goldy’s fiancee is also a former UFC fighter, Alex Nicholson, giving her the “Queen of Sparta” nickname. Her foundation style is boxing as her hands are sharp. There is still a lot she needs to show as there isn’t much footage but it’s a fact that she wants to keep the fight standing where she is very technical. The flyweight division needs all the talent it can get and Goldy would be a good fit.

Jason Soares

Featherweight | 29 | Miami, Florida | 12-0 | 2 KO/TKO, 8 Submissions

Jason Soares was a competitor on the 22nd season of The Ultimate Fighter, where he lost his entry fight to Julian Erosa. Soares is a really talented fighter with stellar skills on the mat. He has solid chokes, winning six times by rear-naked choke. He dominates on the mat, maintaining control when his opponent tries to scramble and generally living up to his status as a jiu-jitsu black belt. He has beaten solid competition as of late and has won the Titan FC title with already one defense.
