Despite losing Kayla Harrison vs. Amanda Nunes, the UFC clearly tried to stack their first card on Paramount as much as they could. They had a Nurmagomedov, a former champion in Deiveson Figueiredo and a highly touted prospect in Ateba Gautier, all fight on the prelims. In the main event, an all-time action hero, a man with a legitimate claim as the most entertaining fighter ever, Justin Gaethje, put on yet another classic in a hard-fought win against Paddy “The Baddy” Pimblett to become a two-time interim champion. With the Paramount era officially off to a good start, let’s look at what’s next for Saturday’s winners.

Justin Gaethje

It’s difficult to decipher what being a two-time interim champion means for Justin Gaethje’s legacy, but what Saturday did provide was yet another reminder that this class of lightweight action heroes is possibly the most special era of any division ever. Gaethje, along with the Charles Oliveiras, Dustin Poiriers, etc. of this lightweight class have been challenged numerous times by the so-called new wave of 155ers, but they have kept giving them the Dikembe Mutombo finger wag. Aside from Arman Tsarukyan, the wave of new names from four or five years have been denied by this aging, but historically great pack of lightweights. Despite an inspired effort, Paddy Pimblett can now be added to the list of names who have fallen short to Gaethje & Company.

As for “The Highlight”, we can expect to see him unify the titles against Ilia Topuria, potentially on the White House lawn. Maybe Topuria is out for even longer than expected and Gaethje has to defend his interim belt, but I’d be doubtful (at least for now).

Gaethje’s next fight: Ilia Topuria

Sean O’Malley

After dropping back-to-back contests to Merab Dvalishvili, Sean O’Malley’s place in the title picture at bantamweight seemed blurry at best and non-existent at worst. But once Petr Yan pulled off the upset and grabbed the belt back, O’Malley’s fight with Song Yadong suddenly took on an entirely different meaning. With a win, O’Malley would have a claim to a title shot since he has a win against Yan, as controversial as it may be.

This decision may have looked somewhat unimpressive compared to some of the highlights he has produced in the past, but it was a win nonetheless and I do believe it will be enough for O’Malley to slide right back into title contention. Especially with a card at the White House coming up, the promotion will probably be looking for Americans to put into some of those title fights, and O’Malley fits that bill.

O’Malley’s next fight: Petr Yan

Waldo Cortes-Acosta

In a surprising turn of events, Waldo Cortes-Acosta has been on a heater at heavyweight since dropping a decision to Sergei Pavlovich. He fought 5 times in 2025, including twice in November. Having now fought on the first card of 2026, he clearly didn’t want to waste any time getting back inside the octagon. After making quick work of Ante Delija and Shamil Gaziev, he showed a more patient and methodical approach to dismantling the power threat in Derrick Lewis. He used his speed advantage to disorient Lewis and break his rhythm, on his way to a second-round TKO.

He called out Curtis Blaydes, which isn’t a bad option, but I prefer the Alexander Volkov matchup. Unfortunately for Volkov, he’ll almost certainly have to fight again before earning his title shot due to the delays of Tom Aspinall’s return. Why not take out the exciting new player in “Salsa Boy” to once again reaffirm your place as next in line?

Cortes-Acosta’s next fight: Alexander Volkov

Natalia Silva

It wasn’t the most action-packed nor the most decisive victory of Silva’s perfect UFC run, so far, but she was already the clear number one contender coming into this bout. Rose Namajunas may have leapfrogged Silva had she beaten Alexa Grasso on this card, which is why it was probably the right call for her to jump into Grasso’s spot once the Mexican withdrew as a way to make sure Rose couldn’t steal her spot.

Usually, these types of performances wouldn’t land you a title shot, especially when there are other names with a claim to it. However, Silva was already deserving of her shot after beating Grasso, this was just some added cushion between her and Erin Blanchfield, Maycee Barber, and the other contenders at flyweight. It may not be the most thrilling affair, but Valentina Shevchenko vs. Natalia Silva should be next.

Silva’s next fight: Valentina Shevchenko

Jean Silva

After suffering his first UFC loss to Diego Lopes in September, fans were wondering how the Brazilian would bounce back. Silva, who was often looking to shake hands with his opponent mid fight, was all business this time around. No fooling around, no unnecessary shenanigans, Silva came to fight. He was still mean-mugging Arnold Allen, doing theatrics in the dying seconds of the bout and was barking after winning the decision, but while in the fight, he seemed to have an added focus.

This allowed him to take home a competitive, but clear decision victory over the Englishman, who’s been a staple of the featherweight top10 for nearly half a decade, now. Knowing the promotion was ready to strap a rocket to him had he defeated Lopes in September, this win should bring him right back into a number one contender bout. I think a fight with Yair Rodriguez in late spring/early summer not only makes a whole lot of sense, but would be absolute fireworks, too.

Silva’s next fight: Yair Rodriguez

Las Vegas — Brazilian featherweight Jean Silva was in good spirits following his win over Arnold Allen at UFC 324 on Saturday, walking into the media space at the T-Mobile Arena with a length of wood, saying since he couldn’t punch any more that night, he’d use that instead.

All in good fun. Silva (17-3) was flying high after returning to the win column care of a unanimous decision victory over Allen, rebounding from a September loss to Diego Lopes.

Silva entered UFC 324 hoping to become the first to stop England’s Allen, but his team convinced him to take a different approach.

“My team [told] me, ‘you must do three rounds, test yourself,'” Silva told media outlets including Cageside Press following the fight. “He’s a tough dude, just lost against [Movsar] Evloev and Max Holloway. But I believe nobody did the damage I did [to] Arnold Allen.”

With his own victory over Jean Silva, Diego Lopes jumped right to a rematch with featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski that arrives next week. Asked for a message to the champ and challenger, Silva exclaimed “who’s going to be the next that I’m going to surf on?”

That was a reference to Silva literally appearing to surf on Allen during Saturday’s contest. The move came just prior to the final horn. Explaining the moment, Silva stated that “Actually, I really trained this position. We knew at that time, he don’t like to be on the ground.” Mentioning practicing with his training partners, when it came to the fight, “I saw the moment and I did it.”

Silva’s team, The Fighting Nerds, went from red-hot in 2024 and early 2025, to struggling towards the end of last year. That put some pressure on Silva to right the ship to start 2025.

As he told Cageside Press, “I did not fight alone. All The Fighting Nerds were here, all The Fighting Nerds fought this night. And it will be the future: all The Fighting Nerds will fight together.”

Featherweights Jean Silva and Arnold Allen kicked off the UFC 324 main card on Saturday, the first numbered event, and first UFC event period, of both 2026 and the Paramount+ era.

That Paramount+ deal had brought some big money to the promotion, $1.1 billion U.S. per year over seven years (with the deal already expanded into other territories). With it had come a doubling of post-fight bonuses to $100,000, and a new, $25,000 finishing bonus for any fighter who stopped their opponent.

Would Silva or Allen capture one of those? Silva, part of The Fighting Nerds, was looking to bounce back from a loss to Diego Lopes. England’s Arnold Allen, after losing two straight, had returned to form by defeating Giga Chikadze in 2024, but had missed all of last year.

Silva held center early in the UFC 324 main card opener, barely moving while Allen worked from the outside, starting off the action with a kick. Allen was far more mobile, circling, firing a probing leg kick while Silva appeared to bide his time, hand cocked. The first punch from the Brazilian targeted the body, and he’d go there again later.

Jean Silva did flip the script, going high with a kick, while Allen borrowed from Silva’s playbook by targeting the body. When Silva closed the distance, looking to fire off a combo, Allen quickly slipped away. His movement through the first three minutes gave him the edge, while Silva was looking overly cautious.

With 90 seconds left in the opening round, Allen was warned for an eye poke, but the action was paused for mere seconds. Silva started moving forward a bit more at the end of the round, but Allen continued to beat him to the punch, snapping his head back with a jab.

Round two was a different story, as by 90 seconds in, Silva had come on strong, and landed an elbow over the top. Allen was still moving, and still landing his jab, with Silva showing some damage over one eye. It was a much more competitive affair early, however. As the round wore on, it was back-and-forth, Allen going high with a kick, and Silva answering with a right hand moments later. With two minutes on the clock, Allen his a knee, then Silva would land heavy leather.

Both men were having their moments, and it seemed like it might come down to who hit the bullseye first. Silva began mixing in some leg kicks, trying to take away Allen’s best weapon— his mobility. Allen would connect with a right, and Silva spun for a back elbow that just missed, or was at the very least blocked. Allen then went high with a kick, as seconds ticked off the clock, taking them to the third.

After a pair of rounds that might have been split, the fight was very much up in the air in round three. The pace slowed a step early, though Silva continued to target the body with her right hand. At times, he’d both double and triple off on the right right. Allen clinched up, looking for a takedown, though Silva was able to get to the fence, where he’d fight hands and try to peel Allen off him.

Silva managed to stay upright, and finally broke free with half the round remaining. That allowed him to pop off a combination, and go back to the body yet again. Then it was Silva looking for a takedown; he’d get Allen to his knees, then dump him again when the Brit popped back up. Neither action was much more than a mat return, however, and soon, there was all of a minute left in the fight.

Taking a page out of Max Holloway’s book, Jean Silva pointed at the center of the octagon with over 30 seconds left. Arnold Allen wasn’t biting. Still, Silva would connect with a head kick, that although blocked looked nasty. Another head kick, and a body kick, followed from “Lord” Silva, who finished the fight strong.

Official Result: Jean Silva def. Arnold Allen by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

Las Vegas — The Fighting Nerds, which Jean Silva is a big part of, had a rough finish to 2025 after being red-hot earlier in the year.

Featherweight Silva now returns to action at UFC 324 this weekend, helping kick off the Paramount+ era for the promotion against Arnold Allen, while also looking to right the ship for the Brazilian fight camp.

“We went back and [shared] a lot of suffering, a lot of pain, a lot of talking; we all had to sit down and share some things,” Silva (16-3) told Cageside Press during Wednesday’s UFC 324 media day, asked about how the team regrouped. “Because you can’t go back into this, you can’t get back into the path, to such a dream we’ve had our entire lives, [that] we’ve worked so hard for, with that pain and suffering in our chest. You need to get over that.”

“We had a lot of conversations, and you can be sure that the Nerds didn’t stop, that we didn’t budge, but we kept going, we kept training, we kept working. And we’re ready for the next challenge.”

Silva, who had been undefeated in the UFC prior to a loss to Diego Lopes last September, went on to say that “we know the expectations that are around The Nerds, and what people think and the trust that was put in us. The UFC has our glasses, they have shirts with our names on them.”

“The UFC places a value on us, so you can be sure that… …some of that unifying denominator we had, that union was kind of lost along the way, but we found ourselves again, you can be sure. We found ourselves again, we’re working towards it, we talked it over, and we continue to work. And it’s going to be together. As a team, as a family, and we’ll be back doing the thing we love the most.”

Saying that his morale was high, Silva started Wednesday’s media session by saying that when it comes to launching the Paramount+ era as the first fight on the UFC 324 main card, “there are jobs that only special people can do, and for sure, I am that special person.”

When it comes to Arnold Allen, meanwhile, “he’s lost to a lot of people, former champions, number one title contenders, and he’s going to lose to the next champion,” the Brazilian stated.

It’s not surprise that Silva sees himself as the next featherweight champion, but he has some work to do to get there. The man he lost to back in September, Lopes, is fighting for gold next. Silva recognizes that beating Allen, however, won’t be what really punches his ticket to gold.

“It’s not going to be him and a win against him that is going to propel me to a championship, a title shot,” Silva suggested. “It’s the way I conduct business, the way I have this personality. Listen, who else barks in the octagon? That speaks for itself.”

We had a couple of entries for this year’s Submission of the Year category, and somewhat surprisingly, none were of the buggy choke or Twister variety. Not even a standing guillotine. While there are never many of those to choose from, it seems our crew went for submissions from 2025 that had more of an impact on an individual fighter’s career, that meant more, rather than just being technically impressive.

Submission of the Year 2025

Eddie Law: Jean Silva subs Bryce Mitchell via Ninja Choke. A chaotic scramble turned into an instant, lights-out finish with a level of precision only a handful of fighters in the world can replicate. Silva quickly locked the choke, adjusted his grip, and forced the tap before Mitchell even had time to defend, showcasing elite opportunistic grappling. Add in the stakes, the shock factor, and the sheer technical mastery, and Silva delivered a submission worthy of Submission of the Year.

Gabriel Gonzalez: Anthony “Fluffy” Hernandez vs Roman Dolidze. “Fluffy” should arguably not have taken the fight. He is on an amazing win-streak and could have waited and campaigned for bigger name opponent at the time. Instead, he elected to stay busy and wait for no one and turned in one of the nastiest submissions of the year in securing a choke and dragging Dolidze to the center of the Octagon and leaving looking all the most dangerous to the middleweight division.

Jay Anderson: The build-up to UFC 314’s Jean Silva vs. Bryce Mitchell was a wild one. Mitchell was public enemy number one, after suggesting Adolf Hitler was a “good guy” to go fishing with, then making controversial comments about gay folks. Jean Silva pounced on the controversy and mocked Mitchell, with antics including bringing a globe to the event’s press conference to poke fun at Bryce’s flat Earth beliefs. Mitchell even quoted scripture to yours truly at the event’s media day, when asked about his controversies (for the record, I have nothing against Bryce and had a much more enjoyable interaction with him in Washington in December 2019 after he pulled off a twister submission, which was our 2019 Submission of the Year). Still, there was something poetic about the “good guy versus bad guy” feud ending with Silva putting Mitchell out with a Ninja choke in the second round. He even got the rock star treatment afterwards, with fans in Miami mobbing his car outside the Kaseya Center.

Brett Cagle: Merab Dvalishvili. At UFC 316 Merab Dvalishvili ended his rivalry with Sean O’Malley in emphatic fashion becoming the first man to submit the former champion in the UFC. Dvalishvili was a lock for this year’s Fighter of the Year, but came up short in the promotion’s final PPV of the year losing his title to Petr Yan. I will still give him some shine in this spot however, for his impressive stoppage win over O’Malley.

Mathis Desjardins: Merab Dvalishvili def. Sean O’Malley [UFC 316]. It’s pretty wild that, to me, the two contenders for this award came in back-to-back fights from the same card. I considered giving the edge to Kayla Harrison’s kimura of Julianna Peña to become champion, but the sheer rarity of north-south chokes in the UFC ended up being the difference maker. Additionally, after being almost nothing but a decision machine for his entire UFC run, seeing Merab tapping out Sean O’Malley felt even more significant and impressive.

Daniel Vreeland: Jean Silva vs Bryce Mitchell. Going into this fight, most saw it as a striker versus a grappler. The questions all seem centered around whether or not Silva could keep his feet long enough to win the fight. However, when all was said and done, it was Silva choking Mitchell unconscious and barking in his face for good measure.

Bryson Hester: Jean Silva’s Ninja Choke Sub vs. Bryce Mitchell. Jean Silva’s submission over Bryce Mitchell got a huge crowd pop and earned the Brazilian a Fight of the Night bonus. Bryce, a submission specialist, has generated all but one of his finishes as an amateur and pro by way of sub. The moment was electric and with it birthed a title eliminator bout for Jean against Diego Lopes as a direct result. This was also the peak of the Fighting Nerds’ hype which played a lot into the storyline as well as a controversial opponent like Mitchell.

End Result: A definitive win for Jean Silva’s ninja choke submission of Bryce Mitchell.

Noche UFC lost a few fights in the weeks leading up to the event, but Saturday still delivered an exciting night of bouts. In the main event, the #10 ranked featherweight, Jean Silva, took on the #2 ranked, Diego Lopes, in a gigantic fight for the UFC’s featherweight division. In the co-main event, longtime UFC bantamweight and #9 ranked Rob Font was denied and defeated by UFC newcomer David Martinez, in just his second fight for the promotion. All Mexican fighters on the card went home victorious. Six main card fighters will need matchups moving forward off of this historic third annual Noche UFC card.

Jean Silva

Diego Lopes delivered a spectacular spinning elbow KO to finish Jean Silva in the main event of Noche UFC. The back-and-forth fight was action-packed, for as long as it lasted- a couple more rounds and fans may have been calling for a rematch. Who knows, one could still materialize down the road. But the loss snapped Silva’s 13-fight win streak dating back to 2018. Silva is now 5-1 with the UFC.

Jean’s ideal matchup moving forward would be against either Brian Ortega or Patricio Pitbull. Matchups depend on a lot of Jean’s time of recovery after the damaged suffered Saturday. Ortega was in previous editions of losers however that’s in the event the featherweight moves to lightweight (after badly missing weight ahead of his last bout, opposite Aljamain Sterling last month). Ortega is ranked at #7 within the 145lbs. division.

Another good matchup for Silva would be against Patricio Pitbull who is ranked at #11. Pitbull got his first UFC win against #14, Dan Ige, in July, so he’s 1-1 now. Pitbull, due to his age and fight miles, has little time to make an impact within the UFC. A matchup with a prospect like Silva could perform a heavy lift for both gentlemen. Either matchup is fight night co main or main event material. And main card material for a pay per view card. Winner of that fight could be propelled into the top 5.

Jean’s next fight: Brian Ortega/ Patricio Pitbull

Rob Font

David Martinez defeated Rob Font in a very competitive unanimous decision in the co-main event of Noche UFC. Rob is now 3-3 in his last six over the past two years. Font just lost to a fighter in Martinez that was making his UFC debut.

At this point, Font should just rebook the fight with Raul Rosas Jr. Raul is currently unranked but has a lot of name value. Raul was scheduled to fight Font at Noche UFC but withdrew due to injury. Considering Font headed into the octagon Saturday ranked at #9, he’ll likely fall a ways in the rankings. Another chance to prove himself against another hungry young fighter may be just what the doctor ordered for the 38-year-old bantamweight.

Rob’s next fight: Raul Rosas Jr

Jared Gordon

Rafa Garcia finished Jared Gordon in the final round of their bout Saturday after treating fans to a couple rounds of edge-of-your-seat action. Gordon is now 2-2 in his last four fights since his no contest against King Green in early 2023.

Low hanging fruit type matchup here, would be pairing Gordon with Diego Ferreira. Jared is 38 and Diego is 40. Both fighters were finished at Noche UFC. Gordon is 9-7, 1 NC with the promotion while Ferreira is 10-7. This fight would make a lot of sense as Ferreira was supposed to take on King Green, a former opponent of Gordon’s a couple of months ago. Both fighters are on the exact right trajectory for this fight to go down. Both fighters are fan friendly, and it could easily be a fight on the main card of a fight night.

Jared’s next fight: Diego Ferreira

Dustin Stoltzfus

Dustin Stoltzfus was out-boxed in his unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Kelvin Gastelum on the main card of Noche UFC. The 191lbs. catchweight bout (Kelvin missed weight) was a big opportunity for Dustin to take down a former title challenger and TUF winner. With the loss, Stoltzfus is now 3-7 with the UFC since being signed on the 2020 season of the Contender Series.

Dustin should fight Jackson McVey in his next fight. Jackson is a 6-1 LFA product that lost his UFC debut back in July to Brunno Ferreria. Jackson and Dustin both suffered stoppage losses to Bruno Ferreira. Brunno stopped Dustin in June of 2024 with an elbow. Jackson had struggled to get his first bout with the promotion having a fight cancelled against Christopher Ewert and Sedriques Dumas before taking on Brunno. A fight between Jackson and Dustin is a much more appropriate of a matchup for both fighters. Has the makings to be a real barn burner. Strong possibility for the loser to be one loss away from being off the roster.

Dustin’s next fight: Jackson McVey

Diego Ferreira

Alexander Hernandez dropped and finished Diego Ferreira in the second round of their fight on Saturday. The 40-year-old lightweight dropped to 10-7 within the UFC since being signed with the promotion in 2014. Ferreira has lost five of his last seven bouts since early 2021 but is 2-2 in his last four.

Diego should take on Jared Gordon as mentioned previously in the article. Ferreira has had a long UFC career and proving legitimacy with a win over Gordon could keep the ball rolling for the Brazilian.

Diego’s next fight: Jared Gordon

Quang Le

Santiago Luna flatlined Quang Le to open the main card of Noche UFC on Saturday. Le came out the gate hot landing a few power punches, but the tide was quickly turned as Quang lost his third fight with the promotional giant. Quang is now just 1-3 with the promotion after being signed on short notice in August of 2024 (was scheduled for 2024 Contender Series fight).

Le will likely get one more shot before he is axed from the roster, if he’s lucky. A good matchup would be against Toshiomi Kazama. Toshiomi is also 1-3 with the UFC. Toshiomi has been finished in all of his appearances (Le has been finished in all but his debut). Both fighters only victories have come by way of stoppage. Not sure where a matchup like this would land on a fight night card but it would likely end with a stoppage and the loser being released from the promotion.

Quang’s next fight: Toshiomi Kazama

After a stunning spinning back elbow finish to cap off the night at Noche UFC on Saturday, it was Diego Lopes doubling up on bonus money at the event.

Lopes put away Fighting Nerd Jean Silva in the Fight Night card’s main event. An adopted Mexican of sorts (a Brazilian fighting out of Mexico), Lopes followed up a title fight loss to Alexander Volkanovski with one of the biggest finishes of his career. Not a bad way to bounce back. As for Silva, he didn’t exactly fight smart, but fought to entertain, and shares in half of the Fight of the Night bonus at Noche UFC. Lopes gets that, plus a Performance of the Night bonus, for $100,000 in total.

That happens to be what fighters on the Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford boxing card airing later that same night were earning for a single bonus. That card is co-promoted by Zuffa/TKO Boxing, or whatever it winds up being called.

Hopefully, the UFC follows through with a promise to increase bonuses for its own fighters once the Paramount+ deal kicks off in 2026.

The remaining Performance of the Night bonus at Noche UFC in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday went to Santiago Luna. The Mexican made his promotional on the card, and had to overcome some adversity against Quang Le before securing a knockout midway through the opening round.

Lopes (26-7) slick grappling attack and veteran savvy meet Silva’s knockout power and unbeaten UFC run, setting the stage for a high-stakes clash that could reshape the division.

Silva (16-2) rides his 5-fight unbeaten UFC record into Noche UFC with all five coming by way of finish. Coming off a submission victory over Bryce Mitchell at UFC 314 in front of the current featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski, set him up for his first main event bout.

Round 1 – Silva came out methodical with a front kick up top to the face of Lopes. He sent a couple more front kicks by grabbing Lopes’ hands and throwing it. Lopes went with kicks to the legs early.

Silva’s lead leg showed damage early on, but it’s something he’s done before. He never shows that it’s bothering him. A spin kick from Silva opened a window for Lopes to take him down and take his back.

Silva went to his back and got mounted. Silva tried as hard as he could to bump him off, but he was eating some nasty ground and pound with elbows and punches. Silva had to choose between going belly down and going to his back and he paid for it repeatedly.

Silva laughed at Lopes as he was eating uncontested shots repeatedly. Silva powered back to his feet somehow and they went back to striking. Silva landed the up kick to the chin of Lopes. Lopes learned as he began to slide back a bit when he saw it coming. What a start to the fight!

Round 2 – Silva came out firing kicks to the legs. Lopes continued his game plan using the leg kicks. Silva started implementing his game landing heavy shots behind jabs. Lopes wasn’t defenseless returning fire with a right hand.

The two stayed in close and landed heavy shots on each other like they accepted that this was going to be a war for the remaining time.

Silva landed a nasty right hand shot on Lopes. He started to land combinations, but Lopes was not backing up or looking for a way out at all. Silva landed to the body and Lopes fired back with a planned left hook up top and a right hand to the body.

Silva missed a right hand and got dragged down by Lopes. Lopes began to wrap him up by lacing the right leg of Silva and then lifting and dropping him. Silva got to his feet but got dragged right back down.

Lopes ended up on top in side control. Silva continued to just muscle his way to his feet and started throwing nuclear shots! Lopes fired back just as much and as hard.

An elbow dropped Silva and a flurry of strikes ended the fight.

Lopes went over to Silva’s corner and had words with his camp who had been doing a lot of talking leading up to the fight.

Official Result: Diego Lopes def. Jean Silva via R2 TKO, 4:48
