ONE Championship returned to Qatar for ONE 171 on Thursday, with a card featuring both MMA and kickboxing title fights to close out the show.

In the main event, ONE strawweight champ Joshua Pacio and interim title holder Jarred Brooks faced off in a title unification bout that also served as the rubber match in their trilogy. Former UFC standout Brooks defeated Pacio in 2022 to claim the promotion’s strawweight championship, capping off an impressive run that began under the UFC banner.

In an immediate rematch last year, however, he lost his title via DQ following an illegal slam. He then claimed an interim title in a fight with Gustavo Balart, then wandered up to bantamweight, losing to Reece McLaren. Now it’s back to strawweight to face Pacio, who has not competed since the DQ win over Brooks last March.

The ONE 171 co-main event, meanwhile, saw Jonathan Haggerty look to defend his bantamweight kickboxing world championship opposite Wei Rui.

On Friday (Saturday local time in Thailand), ONE Fight Night 26 went down, with Christian Lee headlining the card.

Lee, a double-champ who holds gold at lightweight and welterweight for the company, has been out of action since November of 2022. That’s due in part due to the tragic death of younger sister Victoria Lee, a fellow ONE Championship fighter who took her own life in late December 2022.

Sister Angela Lee, once one of ONE Championship’s biggest stars, officially retired last year, opting not to carry on in the MMA business following the loss of her sister. Nearly two years later, however, brother Christian returns, looking to defend his lightweight title against Alibeg Rasulov.

Rasulov earned his shot at gold earlier this year, defeating former champ Ok Rae Yoon in July.

Lee versus Rasulov is one of two title fights on the ONE Fight Night 26 card, as Mayssa Bastos vs. Danielle Kelly will see the winner come away with the ONE atomweight submission grappling championship.

One of those fights, however, hit a snag on Thursday during the event’s official weigh-in, when Gustavo Balart failed to hit championship weight. Off by a pound at 126, that leaves only Jarred Brooks, a former UFC star and former ONE strawweight champ, eligible to win the vacant interim strawweight title on Friday.

The winner of Brooks vs. Balart would have been a lock to face champ Joshua Pacio next. And should Brooks win, a trilogy fight with Pacio will almost certainly be next. A Balart win, however, results in a big question mark at this point.

In the co-main event, submission grappling champ Danielle Kelly looked to defend her atomweight title for the first time, opposite Mayssa Bastos.

Former ONE strawweight champ Jarred Brooks will be eligible to capture interim gold at Friday’s ONE Fight Night 24, but challenger Gustavo Balart will not be claiming a title win or lose.

That’s because Balart (12-4) missed championship weight at Thursday’s official weigh-in, coming in a single pound heavy at 126lbs.

Both fighters passed their hydration tests.

It’s a stunning turn of events for a highly anticipated fight in the lower weight classes. Brooks (20-3, 1NC) has slowly built himself into a star for ONE Championship, winning seven fights dating back to 2018, including his final bout as a UFC flyweight. That run saw him capture strawweight gold for ONE, though he would lose the belt in a rematch with Joshua Pacio, the man he won the title off of.

A victory on Friday is an instant ticket to another fight with Pacio. For Brooks, at least. As for Balart, who enters on a four-fight win streak, should he see his hand raised, the interim belt will remain vacant.

The first of three title fights at Friday’s ONE 166 in Qatar saw strawweight champ Jarred Brooks run it back with ex-champ Joshua Pacio, and not surprisingly, things got off to a quick start.

Brooks, a former UFC flyweight who was perhaps the most notable casualty of the promotion nearly cutting the 125lb division years ago, entered the bout having not lost a fight since 2018. He went right after Pacio, taking the back while standing then hoisting the challenger up and slamming him down before jumping on the back. From there, ground n’ pound flowed, and it appeared Brooks had a quick TKO win.

Not so fast. Referee Herb Dean had detected a spike in that takedown, with replays showing Joshua Pacio had been dropped on his head. A confusing scene then ensued. While Dean was still explaining the situation to Brooks, the announcement was made that Pacio had won via DQ, with neither man at center for the result being read. Nor was either fighter interviewed following the announcement, though Brooks was clearly beside himself.

A confusing, chaotic scene in Qatar, and the second straight DQ on the card. One fight earlier, Arjan Bhullar had been disqualified from his bout with Amir Aliakbari after repeatedly refusing to engage.

As for the title changing hands via DQ, it is reminiscent of Aljamain Sterling claiming bantamweight old in the UFC after being illegally kneed by Petr Yan. Still not the way anyone wanted to see Jarred Brooks vs. Joshua Pacio II end, and it almost certainly sets up a third meeting.

Official Result: Joshua Pacio def. Jarred Brooks (c) by DQ (spike), Round 1, 0:56 — for the ONE strawweight championship

The main event represented yet another chance for a fighter to make history as a triple champ in MMA, with Anatoly Malykhin, already holding heavyweight and light heavyweight gold, went after Reinier de Ridder’s middleweight title. Patricio Pitbull and Salahdine Parnasse had both tried to achieve triple champ status in 2023 only to fall short. Could Malykhin succeed where others had failed?

ONE’s biggest MMA card in a year also featured a featherweight title unification bout, as champ Tang Kai met interim title hold Thanh Le, the man he had originally defeated to claim gold. Le had submitted Ilya Freymanov in October to claim the interim championship.

Finally, strawweight champion Jarred Brooks looked to continue his impressive post-UFC run when he ran things back with ex-champ Joshua Pacio.

Boxing, submission grappling, and Muay Thai action were also in store for fight fans in Qatar.

ONE Championship will head to Qatar next March for ONE 166, and a strawweight title fight rematch is along for the ride.

That fight will see Jarred Brooks (20-2, 1NC) and Joshua Pacio (21-4) run it back, in a rematch of their December 2022 meeting at ONE 164. Their original showdown saw Brooks win a five-round unanimous decision to capture the ONE Championship strawweight title.

Brooks has not fought since, while Pacio returned to the win column against Mansur Malachiev. News of the booking was announced in a press release distributed on Monday.

Joshua Pacio is a multi-time ONE strawweight champ best known for his fights with Yoshitaka Naito and Yosuke Saruta. Fighting in ONE Championship since 2016, Pacio is 3-0 in rematches, defeating Naito once and Saruta twice after losing to both of them in their initial meetings.

Jarred Brooks, a former UFC flyweight standout, is undefeated since 2018 and won his final octagon outing. Despite the win, Brooks was released at a time where the promotion was considering scrapping the 125lb division.

“The Monkey God” has won all four of his bouts under the ONE Championship banner, with two submission victories in that stretch.

Also announced for ONE 164, former heavyweight champ Arjan Bhullar (11-2) will take on Amir Aliakbari (13-3). Bhullar, an Indo-Canadian who dropped his title to Anatoly Malykhin in his last outing, will look to bounce back agasint Aliakbari, winner of three straight.

A flyweight submission grappling match between Osamah Almarwai and Cleber Sousa has also been announced for ONE 166: Qatar, which takes place at the Lusail Sports Arena on March 1, 2024.

The co-main event of ONE Fight Night 13 featured a unique contest, as ONE flyweight grappling champion Mikey Musumeci, a.k.a. ‘Darth Rigatoni,’ defended his belt against strawweight MMA champion Jarred ‘The Monkey God’ Brooks.

Although Brooks’ mixed martial arts style is wrestling and grappling heavy, he was seen as a prohibitive underdog in this fight, with odds as steep as +1000 on some sportsbooks. This was due to Musumeci being one of the current best grapplers in the world, arguably the best in the lighter weight classes which are not featured in ADCC. He had won eight straight bouts going into this one and was undefeated in ONE Championship, including two defenses of his submissiong grappling title.

Mikey came out and pressed forward so he could pull guard on the smaller man. Musumeci constantly worked to change the angles and attack grips. He pulled his leg up, seemingly going for rubber guard but then suddenly switched off to a leg attack. Jarred Brooks stayed calm so the leg lock never got tight; he settled back in Musumeci’s guard. Brooks mainly seemed to just want to stay heavy on top but it could not last as Mikey again inverted for a leg lock. Brooks escaped, however, and got back up. Mikey chased him down though and pulled guard so he could invert on a leg lock once more.

The referee called a catch for Musumeci as he attacked it. He could not complete the submission but used it to get on top of Jarred Brooks; then he took the back as Brooks fought to escape. Musumeci locked the body triangle up instantly. Brooks was able to survive for a long time but not do much more, yet that was enough as the referee called a break due to a lack of action. They were back on the feet for only a moment before Musumeci pulled guard again. Mikey worked to create angles and was successfully able to throw up a triangle choke. He tightened it continually but somehow Brooks stayed conscious. Musumeci then worked to attack a straight arm lock on Brooks’ left arm. He gave it up soon but he was too slick and switched to a normal triangle-armbar. Jarred Brooks was forced to tap.

Mikey Musumeci seems unstoppable at 135-lbs in ONE Championship after only three defenses. He gave respect to Jarred Brooks in the post-fight interview, classy as ever. He was slightly put-out by the referee’s choice to stand them up when he had been on Jarred’s back working for a special submission he had been training, but even then he was too nice to blame anyone else, saying he should have been quicker with attacking it. The champion was gifted a performance bonus of $50,000 for yet another submission and then hinted at big things coming in the future which he could not speak about yet.

To close out his time on the mic, Mikey dedicated the fight to his great-aunt Margaret who sadly passed away before this bout. He made sure to get in a greeting in Thai to the Lumpinee stadium crowd before taking his belt and walking off.

Official Result: Mikey Musumeci def. Jarred Brooks by Submission (triangle armbar) 7:30

Strawweight champion Joshua Pacio faced number one contender Jarred Brooks in the main event of ONE 164 in the champ’s home country of the Philippines on Saturday.

The long-anticipated strawweight scrap did not diappoint.

Brooks, aka “The Monkey God,” would look to use his wrestling to take down the Wushu artist Pacio and perhaps submit him while Pacio looked for another highlight reel knockout.

Brooks came out using in-and-out movement to attack Pacio and after landing a good right hand Brooks landed a takedown easily in the first thirty seconds. Jarred looked to land punches and elbows in the full guard of Joshua Pacio. He had good success, and Pacio seemed unable to get back up, only offering elbows off of his back. With three minutes left in the round Pacio tried to scramble to his feet but Brooks stayed on him.

Pacio then locked up a guillotine choke and tried to submit the challenger but the American was able to pass guard and escape the choke. Pacio continually was moving and looking to create angles to throw up submissions or elbows but Brooks was heavy on top. The striking explosions of Brooks from on top did consistent, significant damage to the champion and likely got him an early lead despite landing a late upkick that landed clean from Pacio. He had shown that when he takes down Pacio, the champion was unable to escape from bottom.

Early in round two Pacio landed a nasty spinning backfist but the chin of Brooks held up well and he got in on a single leg off of that exchange. Pacio showed better takedown defense as he stayed up but was still stuck in the clinch with his legs being grasped by his foe. Finally they got back to range, but not before Brooks landed a knee to the head on the break. A blitz from Brooks got him tagged by the sharp hands of Pacio; he was clearly less comfortable striking than wrestling against the champion. Jared Brooks began to hurl barbs at his opponent, apparently saying the shots from Pacio were not hurting him. Brooks shot a takedown late in the round and received boos from the Manila crowd as Pacio defended the takedown. The round ended with a big right hand from Brooks.

The third round began with Pacio stuffing another takedown. Despite the striking advantage on paper for Pacio the exchanges on the feet now seemed to be fairly even as Brooks circled the champion, who held the center of the cage at all times. This third round was slower and Pacio was very defensive, hardly offering any offense at all while Brooks occasionally darted in with singular strikes. Pacio partially landed a spinning back kick to the stomach with two minutes left but Brooks called him on for more. Late in the round Pacio began to throw a few more strikes but they were always singular, never in combination, and almost all kicks. Both men offered wild round and spin kicks with little success. A right hand from Brooks once again closed out the round. The fight was close but Brooks was far more active, even when unable to land takedowns.

The championship rounds presented some questions as Brooks had never been this far in a professional fight. The commentary mused on if his cardio would hold up. Pacio’s corner offered surprising advice, telling him to take down the wrestler to surprise him. Brooks came out with explosive strikes and Pacio thought about a single leg but let it go quickly. The pace was once again slow, punctuated only by explosions from Jarred Brook which Pacio occasionally met with his own strikes but more often avoided.

Brooks got a slick takedown inside of two minutes, shucked right to the back, and locked up a body triangle immediately. Brooks landed punches from the back as he looked to get past Pacio’s arms, which defended his neck, and lock up a rear-naked choke. He tried for it in earnest with thirty seconds left but the angle was wrong, he was off to the side of the champion. Pacio kept wrist control as best he could. With ten seconds left in the round Brooks got in a choke that seemed as if it would end the fight, but Pacio was able to get his chin between his neck and the forearm of Brooks. He stopped fighting and waited for the round to end. The last visual of the champion in round four was a thumbs up to the referee and camera.

Still, it seemed as though Joshua Pacio was down going into the final round, having been seemingly out-landed and out-grappled. He was slightly more active this round, landing a good left hook early on, but still spent a lot of time waiting for his openings. Brooks gave Pacio an opening when he fell on his back off of a jumping knee, but when Pacio went for a hammerfist Brooks sprung back to his feet. As the halfway point came and went, Pacio still was letting his belt slip away via inactivity. With seventy seconds left in the round Brooks shot a takedown for the first time this round and landed it successfully. Not content to sit on his lead, ‘The Monkey King’ still made sure to posture up and land powerful strikes to the head and body. Brooks attempted a front choke in the final seconds but the bell rang before he could do anything with it.

ONE Championship bouts are scored as a whole but it seemed that Brooks had won under any scoring system, having been more active offensively, inflicted more damage, and had more success grappling. When Dom Lau read the scorecards there was no surprise from any judges and Jarred Brooks heard, “And new,” to win his first major MMA title.

After the fight, Brooks expressed his admiration of the Filipino people after playing the heel role ahead of the fight. “I know I’ve been the heel a lot in my last fights, but I’m a good person. I don’t want anybody to think that I’m not,” Brooks added, before calling out Demetrious Johnson for a Champ vs. Champ fight.

Official Result: Jarred Brooks def. Joshua Pacio (c) by unanimous decision

The second card of a double-header in Manila, Philippines over the weekend, ONE 164 saw ONE Championship’s strawweight title on the line.

In the main event of Saturday’s card, which trailed ONE on Prime Video 5, Joshua Pacio looked to defend his title against former UFC standout Jarred “The Monkey God” Brooks, who had not tasted defeat since 2018.

Brooks, who left the UFC off a win, had made stops in RIZIN and WXC before arriving in ONE last year, and had won his first three fights out of the gate in the promotion. He entered the Pacio fight on a five-fight win streak, looking to claim gold in a major promotion for the first time.

Pacio, a two-time strawweight champion in ONE Championship, had defended his title three times in his second stint atop the weight class. The Filipino fighter had been out of action for over a year, however, prior to Friday’s contest.

Elsewhere on the ONE 164 card, former UFC heavyweight Brandon Vera, who lost his ONE heavyweight title to Arjan Bhullar last year, returned to action against Iranian wrestler Amir Aliakbari. And in prelim action, China’s Meng Bo was up against Jenelyn Olsim.
