Japanese atomweight Itsuki Hirata returned to action as part of ONE Friday Fights 120, looking to snap a three-fight skid in the process.

Once considered a title hopeful who took part in the promotion’s atomweight grand prix, Hirata was without a win since August of 2022. That three year span had seen her lose fights against UFC veteran Seo-Hee Ham, fellow Japanese fighter Ayaka Miura, and Brazilian Victoria Souza, who had become the first fighter to submit and finish Hirata.

On Friday, she meets undefeated Indian prospect Arti Khatri.

MMA, Kickboxing, and Muay Thai were scheduled for ONE Friday Fights 120, with Thailand’s Yodlekpet Or Atchariya and Pompet Panthonggym facing off in the night’s flyweight Muay Thai main event. As usual, a $100,000 U.S. ONE Championship contract would be on the line for one fighter.

ONE Championship returned to Amazon’s Prime Video platform on Friday night (Saturday local time in Singapore) for ONE Fight Night 8, featuring Thailand’s Superlek taking on short-notice foe Danial Williams in a flyweight kickboxing title fight atop the card.

The event wasn’t originally supposed to end that way, however. Initially, the long awaited heavyweight title unification bout between champion Arjan Bhullar and interim champ Anatoly Malykhin was expected to headline the card. When that fell through, Superlek was then bumped up the main event against fellow Thai star Rodtang — who was in turn forced to withdraw due to injury, opening the door for Williams to step up.

On the MMA side of things, ONE Fight Night 8 brought with it the long-awaited match-up between Itsuki Hirata and Seo Hee Ham. Japan’s Hirata had failed a hydration test last year, leading to an earlier date with UFC alum Ham falling through.

For her part, Ham was undefeated since exiting the UFC in 2016 and returning to atomweight, though she had been forced to pull out of ONE’s atomweight grand prix, losing out on a title opportunity in the process.

The co-main event of ONE Fight Night 8 featured an atomweight Muay Thai unification bout between Allycia Rodrigues and Janet Todd.

ONE Fight Night 8 goes down Friday, March 24, 2023 (Mar. 25 locally) in Singapore, with the preliminary card kicking off at 7PM ET. Full results and a live stream of the early action can be found below.

ONE Fight Night 8: Superlek vs. Williams Results

Allycia Rodrigues (c) def. Janet Todd (ic) by unanimous decision – for the ONE women’s atomweight Muay Thai championship / title unification bout
Seo Hee Ham def. Itsuki Hirata by unanimous decision
Akbar Abdullaev def. Oh Ho Taek by TKO, Round 1, 0:44

March’s ONE Fight Night 8 will be the landing spot for an atomweight clash months in the making.

Seo Hee Ham (25-8) had been expected to face Itsuki Hirata (6-1) at ONE 163 back in November. However, a weight miss by Hirata saw the fight fall through, after Ham refused the prospect of a catchweight bout.

Now, the fight is back on, part of the ONE Fight Night 8 card on March 24, 2023. Promotion officials announced the news on Thursday.

South Korea’s Ham has been on a tear since exiting the UFC in 2016, where she was an undersized strawweight. Following back-to-back losses in the octagon and with a record of 1-3 in the promotion overall, Ham returned to ROAD FC, winning the atomweight title there and defending it twice.

Ham then signed with RIZIN Fighting Federation in Japan, picking up another title on New Year’s Eve in 2019. However, with foreign fighters unable to travel to the country during the coronavirus pandemic, Ham jumped to ONE Championship, where she has won her first two bouts.

She remains a perfect 8-0 since exiting the UFC.

Japan’s Itsuki Hirata suffered the first loss of her professional career against Jihin Radzuan last March at ONE X. The youngster found herself on the wrong side of a split decision in the fight. She then returned to the win column against Lin Heqin in August.

Set to take place on March 24, 2023 (Mar. 25 locally) at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, ONE Fight Night 8 is expected to be headlined by a heavyweight title unification bout that will see Arjan Bhullar face Anatoly Malykhin. The card airs live on Amazon’s Prime Video platform.

ONE 163 will take place on November 19, and the upcoming card has added a four-pack of fights featuring the promotion’s top Japanese stars.

Shinya Aoki, Yushin Okami, Itsuki Hirata, and Yuya Wakamatsu are all expected to be in action at the ONE 163 card, ONE Championship officials announced recently. The event is set to take place in the promotion’s stronghold in Singapore at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

A bantamweight kickboxing title fight will headline the card, featuring Japanese champ Hiromi Akimoto defending his belt against Thailand’s Petchtanong Petchfergus.

On the MMA side, Aoki (47-10, 1NC), one of the sport’s elder statesmen, will take on Saygid Izagakhmaev (21-2). The Russian has won four straight, including two under the ONE Championship banner.

Aoki had a four-fight win streak snapped in his last outing by fellow UFC star Yoshihiro Akiyama, a.k.a. “Sexyama.”

Okami (37-14) will be competing in MMA for the first time since 2019, when he snapped a three-fight skid with a win over Agilan Thani. Okami has been paired up with former ONE double-champ Aung La N Sang at ONE 163.

Itsuki Hirata (6-1) got back in the win column earlier this year against Lin Heqin, after suffering her first pro loss against Jihin Radzuan at ONE X. Hirata will face former UFC and Road FC fighter Seo Hee Ham (25-8), who has won her last eight fights — which includes capturing the RIZIN Super Atomweight title prior to the coronavirus pandemic.

Finally, Yuya Wakamatsu (15-5) has been booked opposite Sung Hoon Woo (9-3).

Needless to say, the past 12 months have not been a great time for Japanese atomweight prospect Itsuki Hirata.

Last fall, the then-undefeated fighter was forced to pull out of the atomweight grand prix due to illness, losing her chance to secure a title shot against Angela Lee. When she did return to action this past March, Hirata suffered her first defeat as a professional, dropping a split decision to Jihin Radzuan.

On Friday night at ONE on Prime Video 1 in Singapore, Hirata looked to put all that behind her against China’s Lin Heqin. It was Heqin, however, who connected first, with one sharp leg kick, then another. A couple of kicks later, Heqin landed a right hand; that connection seemed to wake Hirata up and get the Japanese fighter moving a little more.

About two minutes into the opening round, Hirata would take the fight down — but was unable to keep it there, with Heqin immediately scrambling up. Back on the feet, Heqin landed a string of jabs that was finally answered by an overhand right from Hirata. Another takedown attempt was initially fought off by Heqin late in the round, but after landing a number of knees to the thigh, Hirata finished the round by putting Heqin on the mat.

Round two saw Heqin go back to her leg kicks, but Hirata had changed her approach, using more lateral movement. The Japanese fighter still struggled to find her entries and get the fight to the ground, however. Hirata’s lead leg was showing some color, as the leg kicks of Heqin were clearly adding up. Hirata would latch on to a submission at the end of the round, a kimura, with Heqin escaping the round as time ran out — but heading to the third, there was a decent chance that Hirata needed a finish to win the fight.

In the third, the damage to Hirata’s legs continued to hamper her. When the pair came together along the fence, Heqin was initially able to keep things standing. But Hirata would eventually land a throw, with a chance to make something happen — only for Heqin to scramble back up. And then, some late drama. Hirata rocked Heqin with a punch, and the Chinese atomweight went down! Hirata pounced on top, landing plenty of ground n’ pound, but ref Herb Dean let things go, and for the second straight round, Lin Heqin was saved by the bell.

That, however, changed the complexion of the fight. With ONE Championship judges scoring fights as a whole, two near-finishes were enough to give Hirata the nod.

After the win, Hirata called for a rematch with the only woman to defeat her, Radzuan.

Official Result: Itsuki Hirata def. Lin Heqin by unanimous decision

ONE Championship’s ongoing atomweight grand prix has undergone another shake-up.

On Monday, promotion officials announced via press release that undefeated Japanese star Itsuki Hirata had been forced to pull out of the tournament, which resumes at Friday’s ONE: NextGen card. That left opponent Ritu Phogat in need of a new opponent.

Stepping up to take Hirata’s place is Jenelyn Olsim, who had been expected to fight in a tournament alternate bout against Jihin Radzuan.

Hirata was reportedly forced to withdraw from her fight due to an illness other than COVID-19. Previously, Seo-Hee Ham was also forced to drop out of her fight with Stamp Fairtex.

Olsim (5-2) will enter her fight with India’s Phogat off two straight victories, against Maira Mazar and Bi Nguyen. She entered ONE Championship via the Warrior Series in 2018, and had previously competed for WSOF Global.

The Filipino fighter will have a tough task against decorated Indian wrestler Phogat (6-1). Having also won two straight fights, Phogat is coming off a unanimous decision win against the much more experienced Meng Bo in the women’s atomweight grand prix quarterfinals.

The loss of Hirata is not the only blow the NextGen card has suffered. Friday’s show has also lost its main event, with Roman Kryklia pulling out of his ONE Heavyweight Kickboxing World Title fight against Iraj Azizpour. An undisclosed medical issue was behind the withdrawal.

As a result, the atomweight grand prix semifinal between Stamp Fairtex and Julie Mezabarba (who replaced Ham) will now headline the card.

Maybe she can cast a vote herself, but Itsuki Hirata wants to face Stamp Fairtex next. At least, that seems to be the match-up she’s expecting.

Hirata (5-0) battled it out with Alyse Anderson at ONE: Empower on Friday, earning a unanimous decision win over the American. That victory, which saw the Japanese atomweight dropped late in the fight, means the 22-year old moves forward in ONE Championship’s high-profile women’s atomweight grand prix.

The semifinal round is up next, with fellow Empower athletes Ritu Phogat, Seo Hee Ham, and Fairtex all advancing in the tournament.

“I’m pretty sure that the fans want to see me against Stamp,” Hirata said following the fight, speaking to media outlets including Cageside Press. “So let the fans choose Stamp and I, and let’s have a good fight.”

Fans will in fact be voting for the semifinal match-ups. It’s a setup that the Japanese fighter is content with.

“I’m totally good about the fan vote, because the first time I heard about the fan vote, it was at the rule meeting. I’m sure everyone was really excited and got motivated, because in the semifinals, the fans can see what they want to see,” Hirata recalled. “My job is to make my fans happy and excited. We’re here to showcase whatever the fans want to see, so yeah, fan voting is great.”

While Hirata got out to a solid start Friday in Singapore, the late adversity she faced certainly changed the complexion of the fight.

“I just saw the ceiling, I wasn’t dizzy or out on my feet or anything, so I was able to come back and put pressure on [Anderson] again,” Hirata said of being knocked down in the third. “Probably in the semifinals, the next opponent will most likely be a good striker, better than Alyse. So I need to make sure I won’t get those big punches again in my next fight.”

ONE Championship’s women’s atomweight grand prix kicked off Friday, at the historic all-female Empower card.

With four quarterfinal bouts playing out, the stage was set for some of the top names in the division to advance towards a title shot against champ Angela Lee. As well, one tournament alternate bout was held Friday at the Singapore Indoor Stadium; that match-up saw Japanese veteran Mei Yamaguchi take on Julie Mezabarba.

Despite having won three grand prix tournaments earlier in her career, Friday simply wasn’t Yamaguchi’s night. Brazil’s Mezabarba, in her promotional debut, had a clear edge on the feet, and her takedown defense and clinch work was enough to keep the fight where she wanted it more often than not. Yamaguchi tried to work her opponent over along the fence, looking for takedowns, only to more often than not be turned, or eat knees and elbows for her troubles. In the final minute, knowing a finish was required, Yamaguchi let her hands go, but Mezabarba was easily able to avoid serious damage.

The Brazilian took home a unanimous decision victory in the end, locking up the tournament alternate spot in the process.

While one Japanese fighter in Yamaguchi fell at ONE: Empower, another found success in the opening round of the atomweight grand prix.

Itsuki Hirata was paired up against American Alyse Anderson, a larger opponent expected to be the undefeated prospect’s toughest test to date.

Hirata opened the action with a low kick, and immediately had to deal with a left hand from the American. The Japanese fighter held her own on the feet, but a bigger question was answered when Anderson pressed her opponent up against the cage.

Believed to have the edge in size and strength, Anderson found herself thrown to the mat shortly after initiating the clinch. That forced Anderson to work off her back, looking for a triangle while Hirata worked in ground n’ pound. Hirata landed most of the damage in the exchange, but Anderson did hit home with a couple of upkicks towards the end of the round, forcing Hirata off her.

Round two once again had Anderson throwing combos, as she had early in round one. But Hirata was still the fighter walking forward, and this time it was the Japanese fighter who initiated a clinch against the fence. A lovely hip toss planted Anderson on her back, with Hirata moving straight into side control.

Anderson showed impressive flexibility, snaking her body around into a head-scissors position before scrambling back to her feet, but Hirata stayed on her opponent and took the fight right back down, where she again moved to side control. Anderson rolled over her opponent out the back, only for Hirata to get back on top in the next transition. Anderson then attempted to throw knees off the bottom, only to be warned for strikes to the back of the head.

With five minutes remaining in their quarterfinal fight, Anderson almost certainly needed to finish Itsuki Hirtata. The Japanese fighter shot early; Anderson defended the attempt with ease. Anderson fired a spinning back fist, and moments later dropped Hirata with a right! Hirata recovered, and instantly initiated a clinch. She’d get the fight down with a throw; Anderson would work back up, only to be taken down once again.

With the fight going the distance, it went to the scorecards. No surprises there, as Hirata earned the unanimous decision. She’ll move on to the semifinals, with match-ups in that round voted for by fans.

ONE Championship kicked off its women’s atomweight grand prix on Friday, with the historic, all-female Empower card.

The 16-woman tournament boasted many of ONE’s top names and hot prospects, with the winner granted a shot at ONE atomweight champion Angela Lee sometime next year. Among the hopefuls, Seo Hee Ham, a former UFC fighter and ROAD FC champion, was set to make her debut, while Stamp Fairtex looked to avenge the first loss of her MMA career against Aloyna Rassohyna. A prospect vs. prospect bout in the grand prix, meanwhile, saw Alyse Anderson, the lone American in the mix, taking on Itsuki Hirata of Japan.

Headlining Friday’s card, which went down live in Singapore, was a strawweight title fight. That saw Xiong Jing Nan looking to make the fifth defense of her title, against Michelle Nicolini. Brazil’s Nicolini, a highly decorated jiu-jitsu practitioner, was entering the fight off a win over atomweight champ Angela Lee, but had not competed since 2019.

Ahead of the fight, Cageside Press spoke to a number of the atomweight grand prix participants. Be sure to check out those interviews:
