Emily Ducote bounced back in a big way on Saturday night.

The former Bellator MMA flyweight title challenger and more recently, Invicta FC strawweight title challenger returned to the win column with a unanimous decision victory over Juliana Lima. Lima, a former UFC fighter, was making her return to Invicta FC, having last competed there in 2013, at Invicta FC 5. The fight was Lima’s first post-UFC bout.

Ducote spoiled her homecoming, proving to be just a little too gritty, a little too powerful. That, and a couple of well-time takedowns sealed the deal.

In the co-main event, Alesha Zappitella wrestled her way to a split decision win over Lindsey VanZandt. The atomweight bout may have produced the next title contender.

The Invicta FC 40 show was stolen by Chelsea Chandler, however. Fighting at featherweight, Chandler put both her stand-up and submission game on display. Knocking down opponent Liv Parker early, Chandler jumped on the opportunity — and Parker — sinking in the rear-naked choke.

Check below for a gallery of highlights from the event!

Emily Ducote and Juliana Lima had the honor of headlining Invicta FC’s first event back in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Invicta FC 40 went down Thursday night, a rare weeknight how ahead of Independence Day in the United States. The card, held at the Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas was something of an abbreviated affair — only five fights in total. Six had originally been scheduled, however a medical issue that arose during TUF alum DeAnna Bennett‘s weight cut saw her fight against Victoria Leonardo removed from the card.

That left the strawweight mean event, and four more bouts, to tide fight fans over. Among them, the return of Lindsey VanZandt, a 7-3 atomweight who had fought for both Bellator and RIZIN. With wins over Bi Nguyen and Rena Kubota (the pair’s career series is split at two fights apiece), her focus was to become the best atomweight in the world moving forward.

Her first obsctacle, Alesha Zappitella, who was 3-1 under the Invicta FC banner to date.

In the main event, meanwhile, Ducote, a former Bellator MMA title challenger at flyweight, looked to bounce back after a losing effort to claim Invicta’s strawweight title last time out. Juliana Lima, for her part, was making her return to the Invicta cage for the first time since 2013. She’d lost her last two fights in the UFC, and was hoping to turn things around, and perhaps earn another shot at the big show.

Genia Goodin vs. Shelby Koren

Just as Thursday’s action was about to kick off, with strawweight action between Genia Goodin and Shelby Koren — out went the lights. Seems the Memorial Hall in Kansas City lost power. Invicta FC, just too hot to handle!

Hard to imagine what the fighters went through, as they were already in the cage and ready to get underway. A short delay, the the actually finally did get going. Goodin opened with a kick, and turned up the heat striking, which led to an immediate takedown attempt by Koren. Koren looked like a spider-money, and pulled her opponent down. Goodin tried a slam while Koren was looking for an arm-bar attempt. Goodin later tried for an arm-bar of her own. Back on the feet, Koren would attempt a guillotine, but with her back to the fence, it was an awkward position. Showing tremendous flexibility, she snaked a leg around her opponent, trying to transition to the back. They’d go to the ground again, Koren throwing up a triangle that looked tight. She stayed on that while attacking an arm as well. Closer, but no cigar. At least once in the round, it looked like Goodin’s arm popped.

In the second, an early clinch led to a hip toss from Koren, but a scramble on the ground led to Goodin getting the upper hand briefly. Moving back to the feet, Koren initiated the attacks, with Goodin countering. With Goodin holding the reach advantage, Koren struggled to work her way inside. Instead, Goodin was able to get her opponent down, and unleash a bit of ground n’ pound. Koren would go after an arm-bar again at the end of the round, but the bell would halt that attempt.

Genia Goodin opened the third with a leg kick, and the pair traded punches. In a clinch along the fence, Koren would look for a hip toss, and again threaten to take the back. The pair exchanged some knees, with Koren’s looking a little harder. Between rounds, under the open scoring system used in Kansas, the judges had it at one round a piece. Whoever went hard in the third was going to take it. Most of the third played out on the feet, and it was close going to the scorecards. Goodin, with the height and reach advantage, may have had a slim lead — and the judges saw it that way in the end.

Official Result: Genia Goodin def. Shelby Koren by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

Trisha Cicero vs. Laura Gallardo

In flyweight action, Laura Gallardo looked for a takedown early in the night’s second fight. Cicero would fight her off, but Gallardo’s second attempt was more successful. Cicero scooted back to the fence, but Gallardo stayed right on her. Cicero would, however, wall-walk up. Once she found a little space, she’d let her jab then a combination go. Gallardo soon dropped for a single leg, and in a repeat of the first takedown, Trisha Cicero scooted back to the fence immediately. Again, she wall-walked back up, both takedown sequences turning into a mirror image of one another. On the feet, Cicero appeared the more comfortable of the two. She moved in-and-out well, jab working from time to time. Gallardo moved in with a flurry, but with less precision.

In round two, Cicero worked her jab, fought off a clinch, and showed solid movement and boxing skills. Cicero landed a hard leg kick, getting Gallardo’s attention. Gallardo would shoot in for a single-leg takedown moments later, landing it. Again, Cicero scooted back to the fence. With over half the round remaining, Gallardo had lots of time to work. Cicero, however, powered up, and broke free of her opponent. She’d touch Gallardo with a leg kick, stay moving, and work her jab and 1-2s. More leg kicks as well, to the inside of Gallardo’s leg, throwing her off-balance. Gallardo, however, would land a takedown in the final seconds of the framel.

Round three saw Cicero fighting off a takedown about ninety seconds in, which could be key. She had the advantage on the feet after all, and her inside leg kicks were having an effect on Gallardo. Despite her wrestling being a difference maker, Gallardo seemed resigned to fight a stand-up battle through much of the third round. She finally went for a clinch in the final minute of the round, but Cicero was able to fight off the attempt, break free, and get back to distance. Gallardo would then shoot for a bit of a sloppy single leg, only for Cicero to break free. That would happen again in the dying seconds, with Cicero again fighting off the attempt.

Official Result: Trisha Cicero def. Laura Gallardo by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Chelsea Chandler vs. Liv Parker

A rare featherweight treat at Invicta FC 40 saw Chelsea Chandler make short work of Liv Parker. Early on, a liver shot by Chander nearly folded Parker over. A left straight followed by a hook dropped Parker moments later. Parker somehow survived, but not for long. Chelsea got right on her back, sinking in the rear-naked choke and flattening Parker out. The tap came in short order.

Official Result: Chelsea Chandler def. Liv Parker by submission (rear-naked choke), Round 1, 1:05

Alesha Zappitella vs. Lindsey VanZandt

Lots of movement early in the atomweight co-main event, as expected with a pair of 105lb women. “Half Pint” Zappitella landed an early takedown, getting into half-guard. She briefly passed to side control before VanZandt reclaimed guard then flashed an upkick before breaking free. It wasn’t long before VanZandt was on her back again, after trying a kick. And this time, Zappitella was able to work from side control, landing a knee to the body and adding short elbows. VanZandt would scramble free at the end of the round, and launch a kick in the final seconds — but Zappitella’s wrestling was dominant.

Round two had Zappitella on the outside, with VanZandt hunting her, flashing her jab. Mixing it up, VanZandt changed levels for a takedown, but that was easily fought off. Zappitella’s own shot was not, and in the opening minute she had VanZandt on her back. A bit of a scramble, and Alesha Zapitella was once again in side control. She’d manage to land some big shots from the top before VanZandt escaped up. But while she was dangerous on the feet (see: spinning hook kick), she was soon back down, off a kick once again. In the final minute of the frame, VanZandt landed a hard leg kick, and a nasty right hand. She sprawled to elude a takedown, as Zappitella clearly got a taste of VanZandt’s power. There’s be a bit of a scramble to the end.

Down on two judge’s scorecards, VanZandt was more than likely going to need a finish. Instead, she wound up back on the ground, scrambling with Alesha Zapitella. While VanZandt wasn’t totally dominated, Zapitella was soon able to regain control. VanZandt threatened with an upkick, but could not escape. She would finally regain her feet in the final 30 seconds, and went back on the offensive. VanZandt fired a high kick, and later a knee on a takedown attempt by Zappitella. Moments later, a jump knee. But VanZandt found herself on her back in the final 30 seconds, which likely sealed the deal, if there was any question, for Alesha Zappitella. Although apparently, for one judge, there was. Regardless, a solid fight, and solid effort by both athletes.

Official Result: Alesha Zappitella def. Lindsey VanZandt by split decision (28-29, 29-27, 30-27)

Emily Ducote vs. Juliana Lima

Lima opened with some leg kicks, and stayed mobile on the outside. Ducote put a little more behind her early strikes, pressing forward with a flurry. Lima attempted to close the distance for a clinch, but Ducote avoided that. A good amount of back-and-forth, and good pace to the first half of the round. Lima would fire a left, and follow up with more strikes. Ducote backpedaled, and Lima followed — only to be reversed against the fence. Lima would land some nasty knees from that position before the break however. In the final minute, Lima worked her jab, the pair exchanged kicks, and they remained active right to the bell.

Lima landed early in the second round. Her output was higher, though Ducote appeared to have the edge in power. Ducote would try to clinch; after a bit of a struggle, the pair separated. Lima fired off kicks to the legs and body; Ducote then took to walking the Brazilian down. Lima used her jab and 1-2 combo to keep her opponent at range, at least until the American closed the distance and pressed Lima into the fence. That didn’t last, and the pair returned to open space. With just over a minute remaining in the second round, Ducote finally shot for a takedown — and landed it. Ducote moved to side control, then mount, landing a number of elbows before Lima regained guard. She’d escape to her feet for the final few seconds.

The third and final round of saw an opportunity for either fighter to step up. Under the Kansas open scoring system, both corners knew it was one round each on all three judge’s scorecards. Ducote worked on her kicks and brought the fight to Lima. Lima was leaking blood from under one eye, care of one of those elbows in round two. Shockingly, after it arguably won her the round in the second, Ducote didn’t go back to her wrestling until the final minute — when she landed an attempt that was short lived, with Ducote essentially allowing her opponent back up. Lima then shot for a takedown of her own, but Ducote pulled free. That took them to the final bell.

Official Result: Emily Ducote def. Juliana Lima by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

“Puddin'” was nowhere to be found, but one Harley Quinn hit the scales on Wednesday at the Invicta FC 40 weigh-in.

Well, not quite. But Lindsey VanZandt pulled off a pretty darn passable cosplay impression of “Daddy’s Lil Monster” after she weighed in (at 105.2lbs) for her co-main event scrap against Alesha Zappitella.

Invicta FC weigh-ins have a long tradition of being a little more on the fun side, in comparison to big brother promotion UFC. VanZandt isn’t the first fighter to dress up for her weigh-in (Roxanne Modafferi has a long history of it, and Pearl Gonzalez has been known to turn heads), but she is one of the more memorable. She even brought the bat.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CCHKJn-J_hm/

She won’t have that Thursday, of course, when Invicta FC 40 goes down live in Kansas City, Kansas, sans fans and media. For a gallery of highlights and results from Wednesday’s weigh-in, check below.

Strawweight: Emily Ducote (115.2) vs. Juliana Lima (115.5)
Atomweight: Alesha Zappitella (105.7) vs. Lindsey VanZandt (105.2)
Flyweight: DeAnna Bennett (N/A)* vs. Victoria Leonardo (125.9)
Featherweight: Chelsea Chandler (145) vs. Liv Parker (145.7)
Flyweight: Trisha Cicero (126) vs. Laura Gallardo (125.1)
Strawweight: Genia Goodin (115.9) vs. Shelby Koren (115.9)

* – The flyweight bout between DeAnna Bennett and Victoria Leonardo was removed from the card after Bennett had a medical issue during her weight cut and could not weigh-in. Leonardo was paid her show purse after making weight and the fight card will proceed with five fights.

DeAnna Bennett fights at Invicta FC 40 on Thursday, July 2. Vitamin D locks horns with Victoria Leonardo in a flyweight feature at the event. It all goes down at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas. The pugilistic proceedings broadcast on UFC Fight Pass at 8:00 PM EST. Both aim to get back into the win column here. This being the circumstances after otherwise strong 2019 campaigns for both fighters respectively.

Bennett did not mince words when it came to how her COVID-19 training camp unfolded. “Honestly, it’s been the weirdest fight camp of my life. I’ve had twenty-plus pro fights alone and this is the weirdest one so far. Every fight camp has it’s own little challenges but this has been an absolutely different one.”

The flyweight continued, saying that “When the pandemic started, normally I’m in Jersey but I went to Utah. Because that’s where my mom’s at and I wanted to make sure she was taken care of. So I spent the bulk of my time in Utah with her. My coach was in Jersey so I talked to him via Zoom. He’d give me stuff to do in training and I’d try to train on my own.”

COVID-19 Training

A lot of time in the mountains with her dog Atlas, spending time with her mom, and other recent factors have put things into perspective. It gave a great sense of inventory to Bennett on her life and what truly matters.

“Having that time to reflect on my life and my career. The people in it and what’s important to me. It’s good to have that time to kind of put everything into perspective,” she told us.

Bennett continued, “Things in Utah opened up about a month ago or so. I have all my old teammates from when I lived in Utah and trained in Utah. Thankfully my friend Court McGee helped me stay with training and keeping me going while I was there. I am back in Jersey now working with my coach and fine-tuning stuff for this fight.”

Bennett is back after her Phoenix Rising Series run in September. She got all the way to the finals before losing in her third fight of the night to recent UFC signee Miranda Maverick. Vitamin D tried to get back to action sooner but circumstances intervened.

“I was ready to go again in December. My manager actually had a fight set up for me in December and Thanksgiving, the girl was severely overweight,” Bennett revealed. “So it ended up getting canceled and then they tried to get me another fight. It was canceled again then they tried to get me another fight when the pandemic hit.”

Phoenix Rising

DeAnna Bennett likes being active and not having long layoffs. Bennett’s shoulder gave out in the third fight of the Phoenix Rising tournament though. So a layoff was needed after such a monumental night.

“One of the things on my fighting bucket list was to compete in a one-day tournament. It as nothing like I’ve ever experienced,” she explained. “It’s so hard to train for something like that. Usually, you go into the cage, you fight one person, you get out of the cage, ‘woo you’re done.’ Go celebrate or go lick your wounds or whatever at that point. You get out of the cage after the first fight and my coach is like ‘lay down.'”

Bennett continued, “But I’m so amped because I’m so excited…It’s just being able to regulate that. What’s interesting and going out for the second fight. Going out there, got a submission win, which I was so happy for that finish. I haven’t had a submission win since before I got in Invicta. It was good to have that feeling again. I want that feeling again. Then the third fight didn’t go my way. Miranda was great, that was her night.”

Invicta FC 40

The Phoenix Rising participation just further underscored a deep sense of appreciation that Bennett has for being part of this promotion. “It was such a great experience and Invicta always puts on such great cards. I love being able to fight for them and be part of their organization. The fact that they have those tournaments and have those experiences. I’m so grateful to have been a part of one honestly.”

Though Bennett got reacquainted with some old friends like Court McGee, the pandemic got in the way of some more recent training partnerships from continuing to grow. Lindsey VanZandt has trained with Bennett regularly and despite the lack of togetherness for this camp, there’s still tremendous joy from the two being on the same July 2 card.

“The second that I found out that she [Lindsey VanZandt] was on the same card as me, I messaged her. I was like ‘Dude! I’m on the same card.’ She said the same thing back. I love her. She’s amazing. Even though we haven’t been able to be in the same room training together, there’s still that camaraderie.”

Bennett continued, adding “From having the same training experiences. You can’t take back all the experiences we’ve had in the past. All of that is still fresh and I’m so excited for her…We’re already excited. We’re going to go out, we’re going to win, do our best, and we’re going to celebrate. Because it has been way too long since I’ve seen you and that has to change.”

Just as this training camp has been unique, regulatory measures around fight week are set to take on a different shape as well.

Vitamin D

“I’m kind of aware there are going to be a lot more regulations. I know we’re going to be quarantined to our individual camp for the fight week as it goes. Obviously having to take precautions with the masks and just being hyper-aware of what we’re doing. What position we’re being put in. Not having the freedom to go and roam around. Usually, my process is I go to Kansas City and like the day before weigh-ins I just aimlessly walk around the city.”

Vitamin D continued, “Because what else am I going to do when I’m food-deprived and only thinking about making weight on the scale? But that’s going to be different this time. I don’t know if it’s going to be similar to how the UFC was doing it in Jacksonville or anything. I had a teammate that was down there for one of those cards. So my coach is kind of familiar with that and he told me a bit about that experience.”

Bennett’s opponent this Thursday Victoria Leonardo is someone she has a level of familiarity with. That being said, Bennett generally isn’t going to tape study to pick up every nuance of every little idiosyncrasy her opponent has.

“I’ve seen some of her fights. I also train in New York with Erin Blanchfield. That was Erin’s last fight and Victoria’s last fight. So obviously I watched that one because I was supporting my teammate. So I’ve seen some of her fights.”

Bennett continued, “I’m not the kind of person that goes back and must watch her fights… Especially because every fight’s different. I leave the video watching for my coach. He’s the one that goes in there. He makes the game plan, he’s finding what I need to work on, and seeing where she may be more vulnerable.”

As a parting thought from our conversation, DeAnna Bennett stated, “I am just an awkward human who likes to be locked into a cage and likes to fight people. It’s just what I do.”

Listen in to my interview with DeAnna Bennett in the link provided!

Lindsey VanZandt fights at Invicta FC 40 on Thursday, July 2. There, she takes on Alesha Zappitella at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas. The event will broadcast on UFC Fight Pass at 8:00 PM EST. With the card, the all women’s MMA promotion makes it’s return from dormancy as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Damsel,” meanwhile, looks to get back in the win column as Zappitella attempts to rack up back-to-back victories.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created an odd landscape for training, to say the least. But VanZandt has remained optimistic all throughout.

“It’s a little weird cause of classes and stuff. But I like one-on-one sessions and small groups anyways,” she told us recently. “So it’s all good. I’m lucky to have my training partners that come up to me and I go down to them. I’ve got a lot of guys that come up from Jersey. So I’m lucky that everybody’s really cool with traveling and putting in the work.”

It’s all about taking all proper cleaning and safety measures with fight camp ahead of this one. Though VanZandt had five fights last year and this is her first bout of 2020, there was some utility to the time off. “I always try to say positive and stay optimistic. But I also had an injury that I was healing up. So I wouldn’t have been able to fight by now anyway. So the scheduling worked out good for me.”

The freak accident, in training shortly after her last bout with Rena Kubota in RIZIN FF, resulted in an MCL tear. No surgery was required thankfully and the injury healed on it’s own.

Invicta FC 40

Alesha Zappitella is someone that VanZandt is familiar with but “Damsel” is not a fighter that dissects tape, per se. “I don’t like to watch too much. I usually let my coach do that,” she admitted. “They know what to work in. I’ve seen all her fights but I don’t really watch them, you know what I mean? I know about her. I know what she’s good at. But I don’t like to over-study people. I’m an over-thinker so I just chill out and let my coaches do that.”

Some coronavirus aspects have caused familiar teammates to temporarily not be in the picture. But there’s still a sense of camaraderie fighting on the same card as DeAnna Bennett, someone that VanZandt has a tremendous rapport with from past sessions.

“I haven’t got to work with her [DeAnna Bennett]. I love her. She’s a great wrestler too. So it would have been nice to be able to see her and pick her brain. I’m so excited we’re on the same card. We reached out and were like ‘oh my god! we’re on the same card. So excited.’ I haven’t seen her since literally before the New Year.”

VanZandt continued, adding that she “trained for my fight in Japan and that was the last time I saw her. I got an injury when I got back. Had to take time off then and then that whole pandemic happened. So forget trying to get to Renzo’s, you know? I haven’t seen her since 2019 so it sucks. But I’m excited to see her and catch up. I’m excited for her to do some work in there.”

Getting back to 105lbs is also a compelling aspect of this fight for Lindsey VanZandt. Though she is not averse to going to strawweight and taking on all comers, Atomweight is surely VanZandt’s optimal weight class.

“I’m excited. It’s my division. I’m even on the smaller end of the atomweights,” she noted. “Like I’m a small girl. When I’m training, I walk around like 111 or 112. I don’t get that big. I’m small. For me to go up is hard. But I like challenges so I don’t care. A fight’s a fight. But yeah, it’s nice to be in my weight class.”

Goals

VanZandt has several paths mapped out to actualize her potential. A rubber match with Rena, number one atomweight status in the world, and a world championship are but a few of her express goals. The pandemic and day-to-day uncertainty of the world has not impeded anything with those aspirations.

“My goals haven’t changed and I’m always looking towards them. I’m still climbing that ladder. I’m a co-main event now and hopefully, I’ll get a title shot next,” she stated. “Or they do a tournament. Whatever they want to do, I’m ready for it. I want to be the best; want to be number one. I want to be the number one atomweight in the world.”

As was mentioned, a one-night tournament is another goal for VanZandt with Invicta having done a few installments for their Phoenix Rising series so far.

In summation, Lindsey VanZandt stated, “It’s always been bucket list thing. I want to fight a couple of times in one night. It just seems like a fun time. After my fights, I’m always like ‘I want to go again.’ I’m all pumped up and want to go again…Definitely want to do that. The title is important and everything. Of course, you want to be champ. But I also want to be number one. I want to fight the best of the best in any organization.”

Invicta FC is finally making its long-awaited return on July 2, with a card headlined by strawweight contenders Emily Ducote and Juliana Lima.

Invicta FC is back, and it’s returning with a great card on July 2.

Invicta FC announced via a press release Tuesday that the promotion is back on that date, with a six-fight card. Headlining the July card is a strawweight bout between former title contender Emily Ducote and former UFC veteran Juliana Lima. Ducote is coming off a controversial title loss to Kanako Murata last November at Invicta FC 38. Lima, on the other hand, is returning following a mixed performance at the inaugural Phoenix Rising event. She defeated fellow UFC veteran Danielle Taylor in the opening round, before losing to future tournament champion Brianna Van Buren in the semifinals.

The co-main event of the card features fan-favorite Alesha “Half-Pint” Zappitella taking on Lindsey VanZandt at atomweight. Zappitella is coming off her third win in the Invicta cage in February, after defeating Kelly D’Angelo via decision. VanZandt is making her first appearance since defeating Shino VanHoose at Invicta FC 37 in October.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the card will be held without fans and media and overseen by the Kansas Athletic Commission. According to the press release, all fighters, corners, commission officials, and Invicta staff will be tested for COVID-19. The card is Invicta’s first since March 6. The original Invicta FC 40 card was set for late June, however, it was postponed due to the pandemic.

Invicta FC 40 will take place on July 2, and take place from Kansas City, Kansas. The full card will air on UFC Fight Pass 7 p.m. CT. The full card can be found below:
