Former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Jon Jones is currently on the outs with the UFC, after negotiations for him to appear on the Freedom 250 card at the White House fell through.

While UFC CEO and President Dana White has insisted that Jones was never going to headline the show, the fighter has been insistent that negotiations were ongoing up to this past Friday.

On Saturday, the promotion announced the Freedom 250 card, headlined by Ilia Topuria vs. Justin Gaethje, and featuring Alex Pereira taking on Ciryl Gane for a interim heavyweight title while champ Tom Aspinall recovers from eye surgery.

Aspinall is now one of two unlikely supporters backing Jones in his latest falling out with the promotion. The current heavyweight champ petitioned to fight Jones last year, with a fight briefly being agreed to before “Bones” backed out.

“This is probably going to be crazy to a lot of people listening, but why is the UFC not giving Jon the respect he deserves financially? That’s crazy to me,” Aspinall said on The Ariel Helwani Show recently.

“If anyone should be getting paid a lot in this sport, it should be Jon Jones for the stuff that he’s done. And that’s me saying that!” Aspinall exclaimed. “After the history that I’ve had with Jon Jones.”

“They offered him $30 million to fight me. Why don’t they offer it again? I don’t understand,” he finished.

Would-be foe Francis Ngannou, who fans have long wanted to see face Jones, has also spoken out in support of the man many consider MMA’s Greatest of All Time (GOAT).

“Watching this story unfold yesterday was very interesting,” Ngannou wrote on social media. “I have lots to say, but for now, Jonny boy, if you manage to get your freedom, then let me know. You deserve that $30M+ after everything you’ve done for the sport, and they should be rolling out the RED CARPET for you.”

Jon Jones campaigned for a spot on the White House card for months and returned to the UFC’s drug testing pool after a brief retirement to facilitate the opportunity. Jones is undefeated in his career save for a DQ loss to Matt Hamill for illegal 12-6 elbows, which have since been permitted under the Unified Rules of MMA.

After his latest fracture with the UFC, Jones has requested his release from the promotion.

It appears that Francis Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight champ and MMA’s lineal heavyweight champion, has known he’s been done with the PFL for a while.

Although the Professional Fighters League announced the news on Friday, during Tuesday’s Rousey vs. Carano kick-off press conference, Ngannou revealed that the announcement “was just the news that came out on Friday.”

“I think that this was an ongoing process for a couple months. I think we’ve been in this position since probably January, that I found out I would not be having another fight in the PFL,” stated Ngannou. “So then I started to look for other options. Then right away, I mean two weeks ago, I was reached out to by Nikisa [Bidarian] to give me an offer.”

Ngannou fought just once for the PFL, after signing with the league in 2023. That was an October 2024 fight against Renan Ferreira, who Ngannou finished via knockout.

Part of the PFL’s problem booking Francis Ngannou, alongside the star’s boxing pursuits, was landing the right opponent. It seems Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions, who signed Ngannou for the Rousey-Carano card in the co-main event slot on May 16, faced the same struggles.

“Originally it was a big name. I mean no disrespect to Philipe, Philipe Lins, which is even a more dangerous opponent, but originally it was Rico [Verhoeven, former GLORY kickboxing champ]. So he [Bidarian] called me, and was like ‘okay, what do you think about fighting Rico in MMA?’ I’m like ‘damn, that sounds good. I never thought about it, but I think it’s a good opportunity.'”

Of course, that’s not the fight that was put together in the end. Verhoeven instead took a fight in boxing, against Oleksandr Usyk. Ngannou meanwhile gets fellow PFL and UFC vet Philipe Lins.

“Long story short, [that was] on Friday two weeks ago. Then Rico gets signed for the Usyk fight, so that wasn’t an option. Then we were looking for a replacement, then Philipe came out as the best option.”

Asked why he was still competing at this stage of his career, Ngannou bristled. “I’m not done. What do you mean, at this stage of my career?” he questioned.

“I still enjoy this. I’m in a better shape than I’ve ever been, even while fighting. For the past nine months, I’ve been in the gym everyday just because I enjoy it,” explained Ngannou. “So far it’s still my job. Of course I do some stuff on the side, but this is my primary job. I just wake up, get excited to go to the gym, do what I want to do, then look around if I have a fight.”

“That’s also a privilege of being a free man. You go out there, do whatever pleases you, and then if there is an opportunity to fight, you fight. If there’s not, you do your business, do your living, and keep on moving.”

“The good thing is when you have to do it because you want to do it, because you like to do it. I think that’s when the real pleasure of fighting begins,” continued Ngannou. “You don’t feel like you’re obliged, you’re forced to fight, you have to. It’s better to fight when you want to fight, and that’s the position that I am in right now.”

Francis Ngannou expects that, in that position, he can continue to compete for a couple more years.

My return to MMA demanded a stage that matched the scale of my ambition, and partnering with MVP to bring this event to Netflix ensures the entire world is watching. I am ready for this new chapter, and I cannot wait to entertain my fans again and remind the world exactly who I am and what I am capable of delivering on a highest stage.”

Lins (18-5) has not fought since UFC 299 in 2024 where he beat Ion Cutelaba by decision.

“To be part of the first MMA event on Netflix is going to be amazing. I’m excited, very, very, very excited,” said Philipe Lins.

“I’m very happy and grateful to God for giving me this opportunity and for being with the right people to take care of my MMA career. MVP, Netflix, and Dominance MMA made this happen. I’m very happy to be fighting on this card with so many legends. Ronda Rousey, Gina Carano, Francis Ngannou, we’re going to make history, and to be a part of this moment is amazing to me.”

PFL released a statement on Friday morning.

“The Professional Fighters League has made the decision to part ways with Francis Ngannou.
Despite his limited activity in the promotion, Ngannou spent much of that time competing in the boxing ring. He dropped a split decision to Tyson Fury in 2023 before suffering a knockout loss to Anthony Joshua in 2024.

UFC CEO and President Dana White is making some bold claims about former UFC heavyweight champion and current PFL star Francis Ngannou.

In a new interview with the podcast Flagrant, White revealed that physical altercations took place between both Ngannou and himself, as well as between Ngannou and UFC Chief Business Officer Hunter Campbell, the promotion’s de facto second in command.

Ngannou left the promotion in 2023 after the fighter and promotion failed to come to terms on a new contract. He later signed with the PFL, where has had fought once, while taking a pair of boxing matches with Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.

The very public breakup between Ngannou and the UFC appeared to be in the past, but White’s new podcast appearance has revealed shocking allegations. According to White, Ngannou put hands on him during an argument over “The Predator” being shut out of a post-fight bonus. The incident, per White, allegedly took place at the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas.

“He was pissed off he didn’t get a $50,000 in his last fight, that he didn’t get the bonus of the night. I said Francis you didn’t get it for this, that [reason] and he’s in my office and he’s arguing with me,” White stated (h/t MMA Fighting). “I’m like this guy got this, this guy got that and this is why. The conversation’s over, and I’m starting to leave, and he grabs me by my shirt and pushes me back in my office and I said ‘dude, get your f*cking hands off me.’ I could see in this guy’s face and in his eyes and the way he’s acting who this guy really f*cking is.”

“My guy Hunter [Campbell], they were talking about something, it might have even been that same thing [about the bonus],” White later added. “And when Hunter started to walk away, Francis grabbed him by the f*cking back of his collar and f*cking pulled him back and said ‘we’re not done talking yet.’ This guy’s not a good f*cking guy. He’s a bad guy.”

White additionally claimed that Francis Ngannou made demands including travel on a private jet ahead of his first fight with Stipe Miocic, which he ultimately lost. The UFC’s head honcho stated he wanted to cut Ngannou at one point, but was talked out of doing so by the UFC’s matchmakers.

Ngannou has not responded to Dana White’s claims as of this writing. He was recently campaigning for a fight with social media personality turned celebrity boxer Jake Paul, an opportunity which instead went to Anthony Joshua.

While Gervonta Davis may or may not be out of his controversial (and highly unnecessary) fight with Jake Paul, one name won’t be replacing him: Francis Ngannou.

The former UFC heavyweight champion and current PFL star, who has also transitioned to boxing, dismissed reports of his involvement on Monday.

Davis has been hit by a restraining order from a woman accusing him of domestic violence and death threats, among other allegations. The unnamed complainant filed a civil lawsuit against Davis under the 11th Circuit Court of Florida in Miami-Dade County recently.

That has called his availability for the Paul fight into question.

While Ngannou had been suggested as a replacement, he isn’t biting.

“No. There’s no such thing happening. How can they go from Gervonta Davis to Francis Ngannou? I mean, Gervonta Davis is a fantastic boxer but, he’s a one shot knockout artist but come on, the weight difference and everything, it makes no sense,” Ngannou told TMZ recently (h/t Fightful). Gervonta Davis, you count and say, okay the size different, he can level up. But at this point, for me, it makes no sense.”

“He said, ‘Yeah, Jake Paul, he’s fighting and I’m like, ‘No bro, come on. Don’t disrespect me like that. They even come out after and say, ‘What if the numbers are good?’ He sends out some number and I’m like, ‘It’s not about the number. If it was about the number, we could have started up.’ I’m just not interested, it makes no sense for me. It’s not what I’m looking at right now.”

Francis Ngannou has amassed an 18-3 record and, for those keeping track, is MMA’s lineal heavyweight champion. He hasn’t lost a fight inside the cage since 2018, but has fought just once since 2022 – a win over Renan Ferreira in 2024. In boxing, “The Predator” lost a split decision against Tyson Fury, and was knocked out by Anthony Joshua.

The PFL has been looking to make the move into Africa with it’s own regional league since signing Francis Ngannou and naming him chairman of PFL Africa in 2023. A little over two-years later they have finally announced that the league will in fact materialize.

“PFL African Launches This July!!!,” wrote Davis on X.

“32 fighters from 14 nations compete in 4 single elimination events to become PFL 2025 Africa Champion…

May 6 major press announcement with fighter roster and event location details!”

Ngannou (18-3) is chairman and equity owner in PFL Africa as part of his deal with the promotion. The former UFC heavyweight champion signed his deal in 2023, but did not compete for the PFL until October 2024 at PFL Super Fights in Riyadh. He lost two boxing matches before stepping into the PFL cage.

It adds another interesting to the PFL story that has really picked up steam since absorbing Bellator in November 2023. Since then the PFL has continued to hold events, eventually letting Bellator fade into the night, but not without controversy.

Since the merger some of Bellator and PFL’s top fighters have complained publicly about lack of fights. Patricio Pitbull campaigned for his release until he got it and eventually signed with the UFC. Aaron Pico made his move to the UFC as well.

PFL star Dakota Ditcheva spoke out in an interview with MMA Junkie about wanting to get a fight booked badly. The next day Davis posted on X announcing that an announcement with fight dates and opponents for Ditcheva and stars like Patchy Mix and Johnny Eblen were coming.

The story gets more interesting every month with the PFL.

Ever since the purchase of Bellator by PFL in late 2023 there have been numerous ‘growing pains’ in terms of merging the companies.

Since the purchase it seems as though it’s been more often bad than good news for the organization. Event cancelations, confusing fans and fighters alike with so many different fight brands all at once, and now fighters are speaking out about the new PFL contracts.

Add on top of all that a brief yet very public spat started by Davis at UFC CEO Dana White that did not go well for the PFL co-founder.

Pitbull reached out to one member of the executive wing of PFL in heavyweight Francis Ngannou.

The idea of a fighter union has been explored for years with very little success. It didn’t seem necessary in the PFL which has touted itself as a fighter’s first promotion, but now it seems as though at least one fighter is looking to push the idea further.

Neither Davis nor Ngannou have responded publicly to Patricio Pitbull’s claims online.

Following easily one of the most banner years in MMA, the sport now has a brand new list of top fights to make in 2025.

The UFC brand has never been bigger and it has in large part been due to the fact that the year saw a very consistent schedule of superstars compete in key blockbuster matchups.

2024 saw Sean O’Malley vs Merab Dvalishvili, Dricus Du Plessis vs Israel Adesanya, Alex Pereira vs Jamahal Hill, Ilia Topuria vs Max Holloway, and more just to name a few.

After such a marquee year, one would imagine that it would be difficult to make a list that competes with the one we made last year. Instead, it speaks to the strength of the talent that a whole new wave of fighters has broken through to become not only contenders but bonafide stars that the fans are excited about headlining major events.

UFC CEO Dana White had to be stopped from cutting Francis Ngannou from the UFC back in 2018.

That’s what the UFC boss said on Thursday following the latest Power Slap event in Abu Dhabi.

“Francis is all about the money. Francis left because he knew that if he fought Jon Jones and didn’t win it would hurt his chances of making the money that he wanted to make,” White told reporters

“Realistically his deal was bigger here. His deal was bigger here if he stayed in the UFC. They can deny it all they want. Why the f*ck would I lie? It doesn’t matter to me one way or the other.”

Ngannou (18-3) left the UFC after unifying his heavyweight title with Cyril Gane’s interim belt. He ended up signing a deal with the PFL which included an open door for him to go into boxing. His two-fight boxing run saw him drop fights against Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.

He made his MMA return last weekend at PFL Super Fights: Battle Of The Giants where he defeated Renan Ferreira via R1 KO. He may not have made it that far if White had his way back in 2018.

“I was going to cut Francis when he lost two in a row. I was going to cut him. Somebody around here begged me not to do it. There’s a much deeper story to this whole thing and he would have made more money if he stayed with the UFC,” he said.

“He didn’t want to fight Jon Jones, that’s a fact, and we’re moving on.”

Moving on with a three-way heavyweight title picture with current champ Jones, former champ Stipe Moicic, and current interim champ Tom Aspinall.

“Everybody loves Tom Aspinall and wants to see Jones and Aspinall, or Stipe and Aspinall,” he said.
