A couple of fighters didn’t lose much stock even though they took a loss on Saturday. And what this card lacked in star power, it more than made up for with exiting bouts, entertaining finishes and a last second main event switch up.

Hyun Sung Park

Tatsuro Taira outclassed and submitted Hyun Sung Park in the second round of the main event at UFC Vegas 108. Taira entered the bout ranked at #6 within the flyweight division while Hyun Sung Park was unranked. Tatsuro was originally scheduled to take on #4 ranked, Amir Albazi before Amir was forced to withdraw from the bout.

Park now is 10-1 as a pro and 3-1 in the UFC since earning contract in Road to UFC in 2022. Hyun Sung was yanked from his fight with the #10 ranked, Steve Erceg, on August 9th for this bout. Erceg is now fighting Ode Osbourne instead.

Instead of another ranked matchup for Hyun Sung Park, what if he fought the winner of Lone’er Kavanagh vs Charles Johnson? That fight goes down on August 23rd so the timing wouldn’t be too bad. Kavanagh is 2-0 within the UFC while Johnson is 6-5 but was previously ranked and has the last victory over hot-prospect, Joshua Van. This bout would definitely be for a ranking as Park faced a completely different matchup than he was expecting at UFC Vegas 108 and should be somewhat fast tracked to a ranking. Fight night main card type of matchup for a top 10 ranking within the flyweight division.

Hyun Sung’s next fight: Lone’er Kavanagh vs Charles Johnson Winner 

Mateusz Rebecki

Chris Duncan bested Mateusz Rebecki over the course of three rounds to win a unanimous decision in a bloody all-out war. Rebecki a 2022 Contender Series product is now 4-2 within the UFC but has lost two of his last three. Granted, Mateusz has won fight of the night honors in his last two appearances.

Mateusz Rebecki simply needs entertaining dance partners to deliver the magic. Easiest matchup to make here would be to pair Rebecki up against Elves Brener who fought just before him on the card. Guaranteed fireworks and violence would come out of these two lightweights if they were paired up. And it’d be an easy one to book for the main card of a fight night. Serious implications for the winner becoming among the long list of fan favorites within the lightweight division.

Mateusz’s next fight: Elves Brener

Elves Brener

Esteban Ribovics defeated Elves Brener in a unanimous decision battle on Saturday. Elves has now lost three fights in a row since starting off hot with three victories including two stoppages and as many performance bonuses.

Two clear different plays here for Brener, either fight Daniel Zellhuber or Mateusz Rebecki. Elves was supposed to meet Zellhuber back in March, but withdrew from the bout. Daniel wasn’t able to get back in the cage until July 19 when he lost a unanimous decision to veteran Michael Johnson. Zellhuber is now 3-3 in the UFC and is on a two-fight skid. Mateusz Rebecki is another obvious option though Rebecki hasn’t lost three fights in a row, he is 1-2 in his last three and the sole win was a split decision. Leaning towards Zellhuber as they share a common opponent and outcome (Esteban Ribovics, decision loss). To be fair Rebecki was scheduled to take on Joel Alvarez who Brenner faced in 2024, but the fight was cancelled after Alvarez withdrew.

Elves’s next fight: Daniel Zellhuber, Mateusz Rebecki

Nora Cornolle

Karol Rosa got the unanimous decision victory against Nora Cornolle on UFC Vegas 108’s main card on Saturday. The lopsided loss now brings Nora’s UFC record to 3-2.Worth noting that of Nora’s three wins with the promotion she has missed weight ahead of two of them.

Conrolle’s next fight should be against Darya Zheleznyakova. Nora and Draya share a common opponent and outcome as they both fought and defeated Melissa Mullins. Zheleznyakova is 2-1 in the UFC with her only loss coming to Allin Perez last September. Even though Darya is coming off a win in her most recent fight over Melissa Mullins on June 21st this fight still makes sense. Would be a good fight between two fighters still trying to get a foothold within the division.

Nora’s next fight: Darya Zheleznyakova

Elizeu Zaleski

Elizeu Zaleski was finished by Neil Magny in the second round of the fight on UFC Vegas 108. Zaleski, a 10-year veteran of the UFC, has now lost three of his last four fights.

Zaleski turns 39 later this year, so why not give him another aging veteran? 40-year-old Nicolas Dalby would be a fantastic matchup for Zaleski. Dalby was last in action against Randy Brown back in April. He was finished by a right hook in the second round of a fantastic fight. Elizeu also fought Randy Brown although it was in June 2024 and lost a unanimous decision bout. Dalby has lost two of his last four but is on a two-fight skid just like Zaleski. This has fun main card fight night action written all over it. Two, decade-long competitors within the UFC duking it out to see who stays out of the hot seat of retirement talks.

Elizeu’s next fight: Nicolas Dalby 

Danny Silva

Danny Silva lost a unanimous decision to Kevin Vallejos to open the main card of UFC Vegas 108 on Saturday. Silva, a product of the 2023 season of the Contender Series is now 2-1 within the UFC. (To make matters worse, Danny missed weight in his UFC debut and both wins have been split decisions.)

Danny should fight Timmy Cuamba in his next fight. This might be a bit of a random pick considering that Cuamba is just 1-2 within the UFC but his two losses are a split decision to Bolaji Oki and a unanimous decision to Lucas Almedia. Silva beat Lucas Almedia back in March via split decision. Technically Timmy is coming off a victory as he stopped Roberto Romero his last time out back in April. However, this fight still makes a lot of sense as far as the momentum of both fighters currently.

Magny was coming off his first back-to-back losses since 2013, the same year he joined the UFC. On his current skid, he’d dropped fights to Michael Morales and Carlos Prates, while Elizeu Zaleski was coming off a single loss to Chidi Njokuani.

The first round started with Dos Santos pressing the action landing good kicks to the legs of Magny. Dos Santos attempted multiple takedowns in the opening five minutes but none of them landed. Magny was on the defensive for the majority of the round, while Dos Santos looked for takedowns against the fence.

In the second round Dos Santos finally landed his first takedown, dragging Magny to the floor with over four minutes remaining. Magny attempted to reverse position, but was unable to get the Brazilian off of him. With two minutes left, Magny returned to his feet and momentarily landed a takedown of his own. Both fighters returned to the feet before Magny landed another takedown after a solid knee, this time quickly transitioning to back control. With thirty seconds left in the round Magny started unloading with bombs on top pouring down punches on a defenseless Dos Santos.

Veteran referee Mark Smith called a stop to the action as Magny picked up the thirtieth win of his career. This TKO victory moved Magny into second all time in UFC victories with 23 tied with four other fighters. Magny holds many division records at Welterweight and earned a stoppage victory one day before his 38th birthday.

“It’s something that should have happened a while ago. This is a fight that’s very interesting and should be a good one. Two veterans of the UFC and two people that just know their way around the octagon.”

Dos Santos (25-9-1) has been in the UFC since 2015 two years after Magny made his promotional debut. The opportunity to test his game against Magny’s was too good to pass up and really expected by the Brazilian.

“It’s a fight that was long time in the making. You know that sooner or later, specially in this division with a lot of talent, that you’re going to face each other. It’s a fight that we knew was going to happen,” he said.

“Happy to finally be facing a guy like him and represent my country, the people that have been around me, very happy to actually have this fight happen.”

“It’s bittersweet and also motivating at the same time. Last time I lost two fights in a row was 2013. The last time I wasn’t ranked as a UFC welterweight was 2014. To be here literally so many years later getting an opportunity to go out there and try to make some things happen again,” Magny told reporters on Wednesday.

“I’m definitely grateful for that.”

Magny (29-13) hasn’t dropped two fights in a row since 2013. Losses to Sergio Moraes and Seth Baczynski set him up for a 7-fight win streak following those bouts. Snapping the losing skid and getting back in the rankings is on the list of goals for Magny.

“It’s a part of the process for sure. Definitely a motivating factor absolutely. Looking at these last two fights, where I am now, one of the things that it forced me to do is kind of like take a step back. Re-asses things and just kind of set some goals,” he said.

“There were plenty of goals I had over the years. Some of those goals seem a little bit further from me than I would have liked. I had to re-asses, reset some goals, and start accomplishing.

One step at a time for Magny. First win on Saturday and then get on with the rest.

“First and foremost my first goal is Saturday night go out there and get a win. My next goal is get back in the rankings and just kind of take it from there,” he said.

“There’s definitely a huge motivating factor in realizing like damn this is the first time in almost 11 years I’m not ranked anymore. Let’s get back in there.”

Several undefeated fighters also lost their 0s on Saturday. The six-fight main card had four fights end with stoppages. This included back-to-back kimura submission finishes. In the main event, a middleweight rematch, Roman Dolidze bested Marvin Vettori over the course of five rounds. And in the co-main event, Elizeu Zaleski suffered a rare stoppage defeat courtesy of Chidi Njokuani. A pair of TUF Season 31 vets are featured on this edition of losers matchmaker as well.

Marvin Vettori

Saturday, Marvin Vettori lost a competitive unanimous decision to familiar foe in Roman Dolidze. Marvin entered the fight ranked at #8 in the middleweight division while his opponent was ranked at #12.

The two men first fought almost two years ago with Vettori walking away with the unanimous decision nod (though that bout was only a three rounder). Saturday was the Italian fighter’s first time losing two fights in a row in his pro MMA career. Marvin is 2-3 since losing his title shot against then middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya, in 2021.

This was a competitive bout especially factoring in the eye pokes by Dolidze. Realistically, Vettori and Dolidze are 1-1 thru two pretty competitive bouts as ranked middleweights. On Sunday, Vettori even reluctantly tweeted that he would be in favor of a trilogy.

While I could see a trilogy sometime in the future, an immediate one just doesn’t seem like fans want right now. The rematch between these two fighters might have even been a little premature.

Instead, Vettori should fight the winner of Bo Nickal vs Reinier de Ridder. That bout is scheduled for May 3rd. Both fighters are skilled grapplers though they boast different styles of grappling. Nickal, arguably one of the most hyped UFC additions ever, was a storied wrestler at Penn State and has absolutely dominated in MMA. Bo went 2-0 on the 2022 season of the Contender Series before racking up four wins with the promotion.

Reinier de Ridder is the #13 ranked UFC middleweight. Reinier is the former ONE FC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion. de Ridder went 7-2 with ONE FC before he was picked up by the UFC late last year. Reinier’s last win came in January with a first-round sub over Kevin Holland. Bo’s last fight was a unanimous decision victory opposite of Paul Craig last November. It was Nickal’s first time hearing the final bell while competing in the sport.

These are two very talented prospects that a lot of fans have eyes on. Whoever makes it thru that May 3rd bout will need a fight against someone that has seen a good amount of elite UFC-level competition. Marvin would be the perfect matchup for the winner of the bout and fans would get a good grappler-striker matchup no matter what. It’d be a great opportunity for Marvin to show that he still has what it takes to be with the elites of the division. A finish of either fighter would be a huge statement.

Vettori’s next fight: Winner of Reinier de Ridder vs Bo Nickal

Elizeu Zaleski

Elizeu Zaleski was violently stopped by Chidi Njokuani in the co-main event of UFC Vegas 104, Saturday. The loss was just the second time that Elizeu has been finished in his 10-year, 17-fight UFC tenure. Elizeu, who turns 39 later this year, started out 7-1 with the promotion. And although Elizeu is 1-2-1 in his last four bouts, he always puts on a good scrap.

Chidi, Zaleski’s opponent, missed weight ahead of this bout so that’s an aspect that needs to be factored in as well.

Elizeu’s next opponent should be Bryan Battle. Bryan, the winner of The Ultimate Fighter Season 29 in 2021, has gone 7-1, 1 NC while with the UFC.

It’s worth noting that Battle is also a guy that has struggled with his weight. “The Butcher” won TUF at middleweight but has since moved down to welterweight following his UFC debut. Bryan’s lone loss is to Rinat Fakhretidnov in 2022 who Elizeu fought to a draw the following year. Battle’s most recent fight was against Randy Brown who he defeated by split decision last December. (Though he missed weight for that bout by 4lbs.) Brown fought Zaleski in his fight prior to that one and defeated the Brazilian by unanimous decision. This fight makes too much sense not to happen as the trajectories of both fighters make this one a no-brainer. This fight has fun striking battle written all over it and the winner would be looking for maybe one more win to push towards a shot at the rankings.

Zaleski dos Santos’s next fight: Bryan Battle

Kurt Holobaugh

Kurt Holobaugh dropped a unanimous decision to Alexander Hernandez on Saturday at UFC Vegas 104. Holobaugh, who has experienced chance after chance with the UFC, is now 2-6 with the promotion. Kurt has lost two of his last three fights since defeating Austin Hubbard to win Season 31 of The Ultimate Fighter.

Next fight for the 38-year-old should be against Viacheslav Borshchev. Viacheslav is a 2021 Contender Series veteran that has yet to be in a boring UFC fight. “Slava Claus” is 3-4, 1 NC, thru his 8-fight UFC stint. With three performance bonuses, Borshchev always brings the striking action. Borshchev lost a unaimous decision to Tom Nolan in his most recent fight on February 8th. This would be a solid lightweight scrap between two former Contender Series guys that put on entertaining fights but are clawing to remain on the UFC’s crowded 155lbs. roster.

Holobaugh’s next fight: Viacheslav Borshchev

Cody Gibson

Cody Gibson was submitted via kimura late in the second round of his UFC Vegas 104 fight against Da’mon Blackshear Saturday. Gibson is 2-2 since losing the tournament championship of Season 31 of The Ultimate Fighter to Brad Katona in 2023.

Gibson’s next fight should be against the loser of Davey Grant vs Daniel Santos. That fight is scheduled for April 5th. Cody has had just one canceled fight during this stint with the UFC, and it was against Davey Grant. Davey is 7-6 with the UFC since 2013. Grant has won three of his last four fights only losing a split decision to Daniel Marcos in 2023. Daniel Santos is 2-1 with the promotion but last fought in 2023 with his unanimous decision victory over Johnny Munoz Jr. Santos has had five cancelled fights since he entered the UFC (with four of those cancellations being because of him) so it’s unfortunate that Gibson likely won’t be in a position to step in for this one should something happen pre-fight.

Winner of this fight would be looking to get a foothold on their UFC career, everyone here is fighting to stay above .500.

Gibson’s Next fight: Loser of Daniel Santos vs David Grant

Diyar Nurgozhay

Diyar Nurgozhay suffered the first defeat of his professional career Saturday when he was submitted by Brendson Ribeiro. Nurgozhay entered the fight with a perfect 10-0 pro MMA record. A veteran of Dagestan, Russia’s Eagle Fighting Championship, Diyar won the EFC light heavyweight championship in 2022. Nurgozhay impressed on last year’s season of the Contender Series with his second-round head kick finish that earned himself a UFC contract.

Diyar missed weight ahead of this fight (by 4.5lbs.) so losing his undefeated record and being finished on top of that, really has to sting. And that first round didn’t go the greatest either, it was an all-around rough debut for Nurgozhay. I’m reasonably confident that the 6’2″, 27-year-old will stay at 205lbs. as he has competed at as light as 185lbs. in his pro MMA career.

Diyar should fight the loser of Navajo Stirling vs Ivan Erslan. That fight is set to go down on the undercard of UFC 315 on May 10th. Navajo Stirling is a 27-year-old prospect out of City Kickboxing. Stirling earned a UFC contract last year with his second round KO on the Contender Series. The undefeated striker won his UFC debut last year with a unaimous decision victory over Tuco Tokkos. Ivan Erslan is a 33-year-old former KSW standout. Erslan dropped his first UFC fight, losing split decision to Ion Cutelaba last September. Whoever loses that fight should get Diyar. All three fighters have potential though Erslan is noticeably farther in his career than both the Contender Series vets.

Nurgozhay’s next fight: Loser of Ivan Erslan vs Navajo Stirling

Seung Woo Choi

Seung Woo Choi was flattened and finished in round one of his bout with Kevin Vallejos to kick off UFC Vegas 104’s main card. Choi has now lost five of his last six fights dating back to late 2021. And to add insult to injury, Seung has been finished in four of those five losses.

Choi’s record with the UFC now sits at 4-7 though he’s only lost two in a row. Seung is in real danger of being cut here. But at 32 years old, and competing in the featherweight division, Seung still has some tread left on the tires. And the South Korean has certainly had some difficult competition in his tenure with the promotion.

Seung Woo Choi should face Shayilan Nuerdanbieke in his next fight. Shayilan is 3-3 with the UFC since being signed in 2021. The Chinese fighter has lost his last two fights being finished by Steve Garcia and most recently, Melquizael Costa, last June. Nuerdanbieke also has a unanimous decision defeat to Josh Culibao. Choi is now also just one fight removed from being finished by Garcia. And Seung also lost a decision to Josh Culibao who has since been released by the UFC (more evidence of how close Seung is to being cut). This would be a striker vs. grappler matchup with the loser on the hot seat.

While the UFC might see the miss differently, as it was the veteran’s first miss in the promotion, it remained a staggering number. Brazil’s Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos however was happy to take the fight (and percentage of Njokuani’s purse no doubt).

Immediately Njokuani pressed forward landing multiple leg kicks early. A glancing front kick landed for Njokuani before an accidental foul for a low blow. When action resumed, Njokuani threw a stabbing front kick to the body. Dos Santos charged in with a glancing right hand that stumbled Njokuani. Both fighters briefly tumbled to the ground before scrambling back to their feet. Dos Santos shot in for a takedown attempt and landed another good left hook against the fence. The 6’3 Njokuani was extremely hard to take off his feet and showed tremendous balance and flexibility against the cage. Dos Santos was doing good work when he got inside, but when the fighters engaged at distance Njokuani had a significant advantage due to his length.

In round two, Njokuani came forward throwing multiple kicks to the legs and body of Dos Santos. A high kick from Njokuani barley missed as Dos Santos ducked under the strike. Dos Santos came forward landing a few hooks to the head, but the fight was stopped due to an eye poke. After Dos Santos recovered, Njokuani landed a few kicks to the body before the fight entered the clinch. Once in the clinch, Njokuani landed a viscous left knee to the chin of Dos Santos knocking him down instantly. Swarming on his injured opponent, Njokuani landed multiple elbows forcing referee Mark Smith to stop the fight.

Since moving down to welterweight, Njokuani is now 3-0 in the division and looks tremendous at this weight. If he can make the weight is a different story, in his post fight interview, Njokuani said he was not concerned about making the weight and want’s an opponent in the top fifteen next.

Njokuani (24-10) is not overlooking his opponent’s skillset.

“He’s in the UFC man so he has it all. He didn’t make it here on accident,” Njokuani told reporters on Wednesday.

“I’m putting him up there. I don’t ever underestimate any fighter. I’m looking at him like the best fighter I’ve fought in my career, and we’ll go from there.”

The pair will serve as the co-main event of UFC Vegas 104 which Njokuani was not aware of until very recently.

“I just found out I was co-main event a couple days ago,” he laughed.

“It’s still the same pressure. It’s a fight. I don’t care if I’m the first fight, or the last fight, it’s a fight. Train for like I would any other fight.”

Even if it’s the toughest opponent, in his mind, up to this point in his career it’s not something he hasn’t seen before.

“I feel like I fought opponents pretty similar to him in the past. It is a fight, so anything can happen, but I do want to keep him at the end of all my punches and kicks,” he said.

“See how he does with that.”

If Dos Santos wanted a banger against a willing opponent he got just that with Njokuani.

“I was really happy. I mean a good opponent makes for a good fight. I’m very excited for this fight,” Dos Santos told reporters through a translator on Wednesday.

“He’s a striker. He’s a banger like me. Enjoys the fights, but I see a lot of good opportunities on the ground. He’s also black belt so if it goes that way we’re good too.”

Dos Santos (25-8-1) has had a long career in the UFC with plenty of highlights including being the first man to finish Sean Strickland via knockout. At 38-years-old it seems that motivation to continue may be waining, but the welterweight has his reasons to continue.

“I think that motivation comes from loving what I do. This is my 10th year in UFC, it’s the 17th year of my career, and I love what I do. I think that’s what keeps me motivated.”

To complicate matters, Scroggin, taking the biggest step up of his career, had missed weight during Friday’s official weigh-ins, one of two fighters to do so.

That wasn’t a great start to his UFC run, though the short-notice nature of the assignment might give him a little bit of breathing room. That said, things went from bad to worse once the would-be welterweight fight (now a 174lb catchweight) arrived on Saturday.

Round one got started and Zach Scroggin was looking to keep his opponent at bay, utilizing a number of low calf kicks. It didn’t keep Zaleski dos Santos away long, as he soon landed a leg kick that led to a right hand, dropping Scroggin! Brazil’s Zaleski dos Santos unloaded with ground n’ pound as Scroggin just covered up taking it. From there, it wasn’t long at all before the ref came in and saved him.

The full fight lasted a little over a minute, and saw Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos improve to 1-1-1 in his last three bouts.

How Zach Scroggin will fare in the UFC

Scroggin on paper has a good resume. Undefeated as a pro at 7-0, unbeaten as an amateur at 8-0, and the FAC welterweight champion. When you look into his fights you would easily see it’s a padded record. Zac Bucia was his best win but is 40. Josh Weston was 9-17. Jeremiah Curtright and Josh Tully are basically terrible. Keyth Dawson quit 30 seconds in. And I thought Scroggin clearly lost his pro debut to Skyler Hicks.

On the feet Scroggin throws a long jab and does well in the clinch. He does his best work with the leg kicks as he can generate damage quickly. That’s about all though as his flaws outweigh his strengths. Scroggin will just throw without any feints or setups. He’ll just go shot-for-shot with whoever he’s fighting. When he does throw he leaves his chin exposed badly. He’s absolutely going to get chinned sooner rather than later.

With the wrestling he struggles more than anything. He’s a big dude but lacks physicality. His takedown defense is awful and does about nothing off his back. His wrestling isn’t good either because there is no substance to his entries or setups. I also noticed that he puts himself in a lot of bad positions. He hasn’t been submitted yet but I see it happening soon. Scroggin is good at using his length to tie up an arm with his knee and land punches.

Scroggin is being brought into the UFC far too early. It’s an injustice to bring him into the UFC this soon, especially on short notice. There isn’t much he does well and what he does do well is negated by his flaws. It’s going to be hard to get wins at the highest level when you aren’t strong in a specific  area and you don’t have any other strength like good footwork or cardio- because he doesn’t.

How he matches up with Zaleski

With Scorggin coming in to the UFC far from ready, fighting a guy like Zaleski is a nightmare. Without going to in-depth in this fight, because it’s not needed, Zaleski  is winning this. I see zero path for Scroggin to win this. I’d be surprised if Scroggin won minutes let alone the fight. I have Zaleski by TKO
