“From the moment I founded Professional Fighters League 8 years ago, it has been my life.

My vision was to create an innovative and premium MMA company as the valuable alternative for those that want it or need it.

We started with nothing – except universal skepticism. Against all odds we succeeded. Now PFL is the clear #2 MMA company worldwide and the only other premium product.

0 fighters to 80 of the top 300 world-ranked fighters under exclusive contract. 0 live events to 24 per year on 4 continents. 0 distribution to 190 countries with 20 major media partners. 0 viewers to 2 million average linear and streaming global viewers per event. 0 social media followers to 30 million active across all platforms.

TODAY I’M STEPPING DOWN AS CHAIRMAN OF PFL.

I care deeply about each employee, value highly every investor, respect greatly our fighters, and appreciate sincerely all fans who supported this company – I gave you everything I’ve got.

Together we built from scratch an entire global sports league. PFL’s fighter roster, product quality, worldwide footprint, and market position has never before been achieved in MMA outside of UFC. I’m confident this incredible foundation should lead to great future success.

PFL changed the great sport of MMA for the better – meaningful innovations, unique global expansion, fighter empowerment – and the company is just getting started.

I’ve loved fighting to build PFL. What Do You Fight For,” Davis wrote in the post.

Davis founded the PFL in 2017 after acquiring World Series of Fighting, then officially launched the promotion in 2018. During his tenure as chairman, he helped establish the league’s signature season-and-playoffs format, which culminated in $1 million payouts for tournament winners.

Davis also played a key role in the acquisition of Bellator, overseeing the process of absorbing its roster before the promotion was ultimately dissolved.

One of the biggest milestones of his run came with the signing of former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou. While the move hasn’t delivered the boost PFL expected, largely due to Ngannou competing just once under the banner so far, it still represented a major statement, landing one of the sport’s biggest stars away from the world’s top promotion.

As of now, there is no word on what’s next for Davis.

The PFL has been looking to make the move into Africa with it’s own regional league since signing Francis Ngannou and naming him chairman of PFL Africa in 2023. A little over two-years later they have finally announced that the league will in fact materialize.

“PFL African Launches This July!!!,” wrote Davis on X.

“32 fighters from 14 nations compete in 4 single elimination events to become PFL 2025 Africa Champion…

3rd regional league from @PFLMMA

May 6 major press announcement with fighter roster and event location details!”

Ngannou (18-3) is chairman and equity owner in PFL Africa as part of his deal with the promotion. The former UFC heavyweight champion signed his deal in 2023, but did not compete for the PFL until October 2024 at PFL Super Fights in Riyadh. He lost two boxing matches before stepping into the PFL cage.

It adds another interesting to the PFL story that has really picked up steam since absorbing Bellator in November 2023. Since then the PFL has continued to hold events, eventually letting Bellator fade into the night, but not without controversy.

Since the merger some of Bellator and PFL’s top fighters have complained publicly about lack of fights. Patricio Pitbull campaigned for his release until he got it and eventually signed with the UFC. Aaron Pico made his move to the UFC as well.

PFL star Dakota Ditcheva spoke out in an interview with MMA Junkie about wanting to get a fight booked badly. The next day Davis posted on X announcing that an announcement with fight dates and opponents for Ditcheva and stars like Patchy Mix and Johnny Eblen were coming.

The story gets more interesting every month with the PFL.

This comes one day after news broke that the PFL would no longer use the Bellator MMA name and everything would be under the PFL umbrella.

Ever since the purchase of Bellator by PFL in late 2023 there have been numerous ‘growing pains’ in terms of merging the companies.

Since the purchase it seems as though it’s been more often bad than good news for the organization. Event cancelations, confusing fans and fighters alike with so many different fight brands all at once, and now fighters are speaking out about the new PFL contracts.

Pitbull reached out to one member of the executive wing of PFL in heavyweight Francis Ngannou.

“Hey @francis_ngannou are you aware of all the absurd things PFL is doing to fighters and putting on the new contracts? Will you ever speak up for us?

I’m thinking it’s time we start a PFL Fighters Union. What do you think?”

The idea of a fighter union has been explored for years with very little success. It didn’t seem necessary in the PFL which has touted itself as a fighter’s first promotion, but now it seems as though at least one fighter is looking to push the idea further.

Neither Davis nor Ngannou have responded publicly to Patricio Pitbull’s claims online.

The Professional Fighters League is reportedly halving the prize money awarded to their tournament winners this coming season.

Since its inception in 2017 and launch the following year, the PFL has dished out $1 million U.S. to winners of its six yearly tournaments, featuring five men’s and one women’s weight classes. However, as first reported by veteran MMA journalist Al Zullino, the prize money in newer PFL contracts is listed as $500,000 U.S. — exactly half of the previous purse.

In previous years, the “one million” purse for winning a PFL Global championship included the winner’s purse from the regular season, rather than being one million dollars on top of the money a fighter had won throughout the year. In 2025, the $500,000 will come on top of a fighter’s regular season pay, given it is listed as “an additional amount.”

While this seems like an obvious cut, the PFL is adding bonus money as an incentive to fighters in 2025. Title challengers will earn a $50,000 U.S. bonus on top of their purse, plus an additional $50,000 win bonus should they unseat the champ. Champions will earn an additional $100,000 on top of their purse (the purse set as equal to what they made in their title challenge), with a $100,000 win bonus.

An additional report by Uncrowned notes that the league is set to remove its points-style format, switching over to a grand prix style system more in line with traditional MMA tournaments.

League officials have yet to officially announced the changes. The PFL’s next event comes later this month, with Champions Series: Road to Dubai, a show that would fall under the Bellator banner (though the Bellator name has rather notably been dropped from promotional materials).

News of the changes comes just days after PFL Founder Donn Davis publicly vented some of his frustrations with events that unfolded in 2024.

“Building companies is really hard with many setbacks, filled with uncertainty and pain, requiring creativity and perseverance,” Davis began his post on LinkedIn.

“Most social media posts celebrate the triumphs of success, and I had great time last week doing that PFL post! This post is opposite…this post celebrates survivial…We all took hard punches in 2024 and are still here to fight. We all had bad things happen…and survived!”

PFL took some rough shots this year with canceled events, fighters leaving, fighters complaining publicly about lack of fights, and events falling well short of expectations.

Davis didn’t go into great detail on any of his five points, but did list some of the tougher things that PFL endured in 2024.

“1 Numerous potential new investors wasted thousands of hours of our time, and time is so precious.

2 Big new advertiser agreed to deal and was in final contract, but new management stopped deal.

3 Some Bellator star fighters complained on social media about not fighting enough, but PFL makes best overall decisions considering ALL our fighters.

4 We are growing so fast with our new international leagues that costs in some regions are too high.

5 Major new initiative and expansion is delayed a year by one of our partners, through no fault of PFL.”

Some of these sound like admissions that things really didn’t go very well at all for PFL in 2024. Losing out on a big advertiser, and dealing with high costs of working overseas, may have been some of the factors as to why PFL/Bellator canceled some events in 2024, although Davis doesn’t state this himself.

Bellator fighters did indeed take to social media to express their frustrations with lack of fights that they were promised.

On the other hand you could say this is possibly just a way for Davis to put blame on other factors for some of these issues. Saying potential investors “wasted thousands of hours of our time” and a new initiative and expansion was delayed “through no fault of PFL” certainly makes it sound that way.

All that being said it’s the lessons he learned in 2024 that have him sounding pretty positive as the promotion enters 2025.

“Like all entrepreneurial companies when faced with issues . . . PFL battled, navigated, solved, improved.

PFL enters 2025 in our BEST POSITION EVER!

Do NOT let others foil you, keep you down, stop you.

To ALL entrepreneurs – you survived – declare victory!”

Pitbull (36-7) has gone to social media before to express his frustration with being put on the shelf after PFL purchased Bellator and absorbed the roster. He last fought in March where he finished Jeremy Kennedy by TKO.

Since then the featherweight claims he’s had poor communication with the promotion and joined fellow Bellator stars bantamweight champ Patchy Mix and light heavyweight champ Corey Anderson in speaking out.

Anderson actually got booked against Vadim Nemkov at heavyweight, but the fight has since then fallen off.

You know I want to pursue something else but want me to fight in April and intend to enforce other clauses in my contract after it’s up. How is that the best for me?”

PFL co-founder Donn Davis has repeatedly said in the past that the PFL is for the fighters, but it’s clear Pitbull doesn’t feel that way.

It’s not surprising that the PFL is planning, according to Pitbull, to enforce clauses in his contract to keep him with PFL/Bellator. Davis has been very critical and outspoken about former PFL champion Kayla Harrison’s move to the UFC.

Losing more of their top talent to the UFC would be a bad look for PFL.

He’s not completely wrong here. Although an official announcement of Bellator’s demise has yet to be put out there, it’s been pretty easy to see some of the signs. A few Bellator events have been canceled without much explanation lately, and it seems as though the top talent in Bellator has taken notice.

UFC CEO Dana White isn’t one to shy away from a war of words, but a competitor may have pushed him a bit far now.

PFL co-founder Donn Davis has made the rounds in the media comparing PFL to the UFC. From comparing PFL’s numbers to the UFC to poking at White for not wanting to make a super fight between Jon Jones and Francis Ngannou, Davis has not stopped speaking about the UFC.

“The PFL should keep the UFC out of their mouth. They can’t even deal with Power Slap. Power Slap destroys PFL,” White told reporters at his post-Power Slap press conference.

White showed up with some stats to support his statements making most think that he knew the question was coming.

“First of all let’s start with followers. Power Slap has 19.2 million followers. PFL has 10 (million). Video views. PFL fight week did 326 million. Power Slap 8 did 690 million. PFL fight week Instagram views 76 million,” he said.

PFL fight week having 76 million views was fight week and the aftermath and Power Slap 9 did 68 million just the week of the event according to White.

PFL hosted soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and made sure to put him front-and-center on as many cameras as possible. White noticed.

“PFL’s Instagram reel with Francis and Ronaldo did 14 million views. Power Slap 9’s Instagram reel with Contender Isaiah had 22 million views,” he said.

White switched gears to the UFC.

“UFC Vegas 84 at the APEX beat them. I understand and I love the stuff that he said. He sounds like Kamala (Harris). Talks a lot, but says nothing,” he said.

“I would hate to be one of that guy’s investors.”

White wasn’t done as he looked to put the nail in the coffin on his verbal assault of Davis.

“I don’t watch MMA. I’ve worked seven years haven’t taken a vacation. You should probably take a vacation. You’re out of your f*cking mind,” he said mocking Davis saying he doesn’t watch MMA.

“He doesn’t beat Power Slap in revenue, he doesn’t beat Power Slap in ticket sales, he doesn’t beat Power Slap in sponsorship. He doesn’t beat Power Slap in anything let alone the UFC.”

Dana White is likely not done firing back at Davis.

Former Bellator MMA middleweight champ Gegard Mousasi is suing his former home for breach of contract, among other allegations, to the tune of $15 million dollars USD, plus punitive damages.

Mousasi wound up on the outs with the promotion after it was acquired by rival PFL last year. He had previously threatened legal action if his contract was not honored; subsequently, the promotion released the high-profile fighter.

News of Mousasi’s lawsuit was first reported by John S. Nash. The lawsuit targets Bellator Sports Worldwide LLC and New Bellator LLC (a subsidiary of the PFL), as well as PFL Founder Donn Davis, PFL CEO Peter Murray, matchmaker Mike Kogan, President of Fighter Operations Ray Sefo, PFL Executive Vice President Of Business Affairs Jim Branson, and PFL VP, Business Affairs & Deputy General Counsel George Pineda.

Among the claims put forward by Mousasi and his lawyers is that the PFL engaged in an “anti-competitive scheme to maintain and enhance their monsopony power.” A monsopony exists when a given market has only one buyer; the term has become well-known to MMA fans due to the ongoing UFC antitrust lawsuit, which claims the UFC has abused their monsopony status. Mousasi’s claim contends that the PFL and UFC are the only places elite MMA fighters can ply their trade, and will likely rely on the league scooping up Bellator as evidence thereof.

Whether that will fly considering it describes a duopoly (and leaves out options like ONE Championship, RIZIN, KSW, and Oktagon MMA, all of whom have provided lucrative alternatives to an albeit small, select number of fighters) remains to be seen. The suit also alleges breach of contract, however, claiming that the PFL attempted to renegotiate Mousasi’s deal after taking control of Bellator MMA.

According to the Statement of Claim filed by Mousasi and his lawyers, when the star’s manager reached out to the promoter seeking a fight, PFL’s Davis replied via email stating “I am aware of Gegard given his very high compensation. Given Gegard is not a PPV draw, and is not a Champion, his deal is very surprising. PFL is a fighter first league, so we respect and empower all fighters. If he desires to have opportunities here then I can have Mike Kogan reach out to you and work on options with you.”

Mousasi’s contract with Bellator, pre-existing the PFL’s purchase of the promotion, entitled him to a guaranteed purse of $150,000 for his first four bouts, increasing to $200,000 thereafter. He also recieved a finish bonus for $50,000 for any fights won via stoppage, and a promotional fee per bout of $600,000. Meaning that, after his fourth fight for Bellator, he was entitled to either $800,000, or with a finish, $850,000 per fight.

None of Gegard Mousasi’s claims have been tested in court. The claims include breach of contract, breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, unjust enrichment, and a claim for relief for Monopsonization under the Sherman Act. He also claims to have been misclassified as an independent contractor.

The timing of the news of the lawsuit coincides with the PFL’s biggest even of the year, Battle of the Giants, set to feature the debut of Francis Ngannou. That takes place on October 19 in Saudi Arabia.

Salt Lake City — Kayla Harrison has one professional loss in MMA to her name, and her old home, the Professional Fighters League, opted to highlight it in a promo released just hours before her fight at UFC 307.

Harrison (18-1) earned a unanimous decision over Ketlen Vieira on Saturday, and likely clinched a bantamweight title shot in the process. As for the PFL, they have a big women’s featherweight fight coming up later this month, as double-champ Larissa Pacheco (155 and 145) faces off with Bellator MMA women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg, herself a former UFC star.

In the hours prior to Harrison’s fight, a video highlighting her lone loss, to Pacheco, was released by the PFL. While ostensibly promoting Pacheco’s fight, it seemed more about getting a shot in at Harrison, who has been criticized by PFL founder Donn Davis for “running” from Pacheco and Cyborg (Harrison, it should be noted, has twice defeated Pacheco, who won a third fight between the pair). Harrison was the face of the PFL for years, winning two titles there at 145lbs before her jump to the UFC and move down to bantamweight.

“I think when you’re losing as much money as they are, f*cking go for it,” White stated during the UFC 307 post-fight press conference on Saturday, when the promo was brought to his attention. F*cking throw the kitchen sink at it.”

White has not been a fan of the PFL in recent times, and had criticism for Davis, without referring to the PFL exec by name. “This guy came out recently and said ‘we’re going to spend more money than they [the UFC] did on The Sphere.’ Well that sounds f*cking brilliant. How many tickets are you going to sell?” he questioned. “They’re not very bright. So if I were them, I would do- listen, it’s all fair. Knock yourself out. They’re drowning. Drowning.”

White would then add simply about the PFL that “they suck. They’re not good at what they do. So I guess you would just keep trying anything you can to make something stick. All good.”
