For those staying up late (or getting up early) following UFC Des Moines, there was another stacked fight card awaiting in RIZIN Otoko Matsuri.

The latest offering from RIZIN Fighting Federation took place at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan on Sunday, with a featherweight title fight headlining the show. In addition, the opening round of the RIZIN 2025 Heavyweight World Grand Prix kicked off, and a number of familiar names including John Dodson and Danny Sabatello were also in action.

In the main event, featherweight champion Kleber Koike Erbst looked to defend his RIZIN title against the undefeated Razhabali Shaidulloev of Kyrgyzstan. A former KSW champ, Koike was on his second stint as the RIZIN featherweight champion.

Promotional mainstays Mikuru Asakura and Chihiro Suzuki faced off in the evening’s co-main event, while Daniel James, a Bellator and PFL alum, took on Marek Samociuk in the aforementioned heavyweight grand prix. James had missed weight for the fight, but RIZIN dropped their “no contest” rule that traditionally saw fighters missing weight see wins turned to no contests. That allowed the grand prix to move forward, though James would start the bout with a red card and point deduction.

Heavyweight Daniel James has missed weight for RIZIN Otoko Matsuri, which takes place Sunday in Tokyo and sees him competing in the promotion’s 2025 Heavyweight World Grand Prix – but “The American Predator,” a former Bellator MMA star, remains eligible to move on in the tournament.

James (15-7-1, 1NC), missed weight by 0.8kg (1.76 pounds) on Saturday for his opening round fight with Marek Samociuk. Under the Japanese promotion’s rules, that would normally bring a No Contest into play, as historically, if a fighter who misses weight wins their bout, the result is flipped to a No Contest (while a loss remains a loss).

However, that will not be the case for James, mainly because of the tournament format. Per a press release by RIZIN officials, the No Contest rule will not be applied on Sunday. James will, however, start the fight with a red card and point deduction, meaning he’ll have to work a little harder if the bout goes to the scorecards.

Of course, Daniel James has only won a fight by decision once in his entire career, so it’s a safe bet the American heavyweight isn’t expecting to hear from the judges on Sunday. He holds 11 KO/TKO finishes and three submissions among his 15 professional victories, and has lost on the scorecards four times.

Saturday’s mishap at the scales is the second straight occasion where James has missed weight. His last bout, a win over Marcelo Golm under the PFL banner, also saw him come in heavy.

RIZIN Otoko Matsuri takes place Sunday, May 4, 2025 at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan.

Bellator and PFL heavyweight Daniel James is once again in the spotlight due to a failed drug test.

“The American Predator” failed a drug test connected to his November 2022 win over Tyrell Fortune, a result overturned the following year to a No Contest. Now, USADA, who oversee drug testing for the PFL, has announced that James (15-7-1, 1NC) has accepted a 10 month suspension after failing a drug test this past May.

That led to James withdrawing from a rematch with Fortune. At least this time, the results came prior to the fight.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, USADA officials revealed that James tested positive for “bis-(4-cyanophenyl) methanol, a metabolite of letrozole” following an out-of-competition drug test on a sample collected on May 8, 2024. The substance falls under the class of Hormone and Metabolic Modulators and is banned at all times for PFL athletes. A maximum sanction of 12 months was on the table for James, but was reduced to 10 due to his cooperation in the investigation.

James last competed in April, defeating UFC alum Marcelo Golm. The Illinois native rather shockingly missed weight for the fight, his PFL debut. The heavyweight turned pro in 2013, and has competed for LFA, ACA, and others in addition to the PFL and Bellator.

Tyrell Fortune has been no stranger when it comes to adversity throughout his career. His most recent setback, however, is set to be removed from his record.

Fortune and his team received word recently that his bout against Daniel James at Bellator 288 in Nov. 2022 had been overturned and changed to a ‘no-contest’. The reason for the change was a reported failed PED test by James the day before the bout took place.

“We immediately contested the fight because of the illegal blows. If you watch the replay Bellator continues to post you can see I’m struck to the back of my head six times before he transfers it to elbows that were legal,” Fortune told Cageside Press.

“But you had hit me six times to the back of my head and Daniel James is a big man.”

When Fortune and his manager Matt Aptaker contested the fight they were told that Fortune had lost that contest.

Fortune said “They then get back to me to tell me that have a congruent case that will overturn the contest but they can’t state why.”

Tyrell Fortune and his team waited over 11 months for an answer regarding his fight with Daniel James and wanted to get answers.

After going back and forth with the Commission for months and waiting for some clarification they received news a few days before Fortune’s scheduled bout with Marcelo Golm at Bellator 301 that his fight with Daniel James would be ruled a no contest.

Cageside Press was able to verify the positive PED test through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. An unspecified anabolic substance was to blame; James was fined $5,000 for the incident, and suspended three months. He received an additional suspension for unpaid child support.

Combatreg.com subsequently changed the Tyrell Fortune vs. Daniel James fight to a no contest as a result of the positive test and the fight will not reflect either fighters’ record. Fortune added he was notified by the commission by letter that the result was overturned.

“Daniel James was a big man on steroids. It took almost a year for them to tell me he popped positive for steroids and my fight was now officially ruled a no contest,” Fortune told Cageside Press.

According to Tyrell Fortune, Bellator MMA had no idea that Daniel James tested positive for a banned substance, because Illinois does not fall under the Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC).

“I walked from the commission office to Bellator to tell them Daniel James got popped for steroids and my fight was ruled a no contest and they said they had no idea,” said Fortune.

Daniel James was previously pulled from his scheduled fight against Davion Franklin in May 2022 due to a positive test, making this his second drug test failure in less than two years.

“I contacted Bellator before our fight to ask them what are we doing to make sure I’m safe fighting him and they said he’s going to have to test negative before you guys fight and he passed that test so between that test and the time we fought he started taking steroids again,” he said.

Fortune and his team feel very strongly about fighting clean and not taking steroids, because as Fortune put it, “peoples lives are at stake and my career is on the line.”

Fourth-ranked Bellator heavyweight contender Daniel James opens the main card of Bellator 297 this Friday night in his home city of Chicago against Gokhan Saricam. Ahead of the fight, he sat down with Cageside Press to discuss this high-profile opportunity.

His placement on such a stacked card, headlined by stars like Yoel Romero, Patricio Pitbull, and Sergio Pettis, and the fact that it is in his home city clearly means a lot to James.

“Coming back to Chicago and being a part of this card was really amazing because they have some of these guys on this card, Romero, Pitbull. And I’m on the main card as a feature. The motivation is always there and it’s always motivating when I’m fighting in my city.”

Chicago is a massive part of who James is; he grew up there, a rough upbringing that he ultimately survived, making a better life for himself. He won by knockout two fights ago on a big main card in Chicago as well and Bellator coming back again means a lot to him.

“For Bellator to do that again, come back to Chicago, and me to be a part of that again is really amazing. Companies don’t really do that. For Bellator to put it on the market, to take that risk of coming to Chicago with all these fines and the things that go on with the athletic commission… I think Bellator stole the market for MMA in Chicago… I appreciate it.”

With James’ rough childhood, he is living proof of how martial arts can help someone grow as a person and find a better life for themselves. He wants to spread that message, saying “It’s really inspiring because doing martial arts has really revamped me as a person: discipline, my focus, mental health. So I’m trying to live, let God see me through the sport and using this platform to say, ‘Hey, this is something that can actually help change your life whether you go pro with it or not, just being in the gym training.’ Everybody’s not going to go pro doing it but the thing is when you start doing something like martial arts it changes the people around you, changes your life completely. You’re not around the people you used to be, you filter out those bad optics.”

One of the most interesting things about Daniel James is a perhaps little known fact: he has been a bodyguard for many celebrities in the past, including fellow Chicago Native, Twista. Asked if the pair still speak, he made it clear they are fast friends – Daniel calls him ‘T,’ after all – and that Twista is a big mixed martial arts fan, in fact.

“Oh yeah, I still talk to T. I talk to him, we go back and forth on text messages. He’s been really busy, he has a festival coming up here in Chicago on the 18th, I think I’m going to go… Twista is a friend, he might be at the fight, should be at the fight. Twista is a big MMA fan, he loves the sport of MMA.”

This line of thought led to James talking about how important this fight and this event are to the city of Chicago, how he gets approached on the streets constantly.

“This fight, this is the most talked-about fight since the Hasim Rahman heavyweight championship [boxing] fight here in 2005. And I’m on this card, and I’m fighting… Everywhere I go people [are] like, ‘Yo, we got tickets to see the fight.’ So I know these people are coming to see Daniel James. If they’re coming to see the fights, they’re coming to see Daniel James. And I’m just glad that I’m able to bring that energy to Bellator 297, so everyone can enjoy it and enjoy a good show and open up their eyes and see MMA is really, really something good to watch.”

When asked if he was told that a win here would get him a title shot against the winner of Ryan Bader vs Linton Vassell, he was direct, “I was told that I was next in line for the title shot… I’m number four now and I worked my ass off to get to number four. I wasn’t fed any guy… I came in fighting the best guys they had. So for me to be up at number four there’s no one else in front of me to fight for the title after this.”

He was complimentary of both Bader and Vassell, but said he’s more used to someone like Ryan Bader, saying, “He’s just a wrestler, I’m used to seeing those wrestlers, I’ve seen guys like that before.”

As for Linton, James seems to prefer that fight, saying, “I actually think me and Linton Vassell is a stronger matchup… We [are] not one-dimensional fighters. I think that fight right there would be what looks good on screen. Linton Vassell is something new to me. Ryan Bader is something I’ve been seeing. Linton Vassell brings the energy, bring the athleticism, bring the character. I like the guy, actually.”

Despite reaching these heights, the loftiest of his career, Daniel is not satisfied with just being number four in the world. He says, “I feel more accomplished than ever. The jobs not done yet [though], so the jobs done when I become world champion.”

“I want to continue this streak man, I want to get to the world title and make a statement, show them that this is what they’ve been missing. [I’m trying] to bring a new flavor to the heavyweight division, some marketing, somebody to talk about. The heavyweight division been really sleeping, wasn’t really talked about, so I’m just glad to be a part of that conversation and considered one of the best for the company.”

Daniel James is known for his fast, fluid, diverse boxing, and he discussed that in his fight with Marcelo Golm, which ultimately led to him getting a finish with an uppercut set up by a series of jabs.

“That’s just my boxing… I just take it wherever it go. That fight we were preparing for a different gameplan… We just focused on, ‘We’re gonna check the kick and counter the guy, walk right through him.’ And he did it smart, he went for the calf kick which is one of the hardest kicks to check… You’re going to feel it. I took some damage to my leg, I’m like, ‘Damn, he was smart.’ I think he was the most skilled guy I fought for Bellator. I fought on one leg.”

This led to one interesting anecdote of how a midnight training session the night before the fight led to Daniel and his team finding a way to set up the shot, the uppercut, which would end up dropping Marcelo Golm and finishing the fight.

“When I was able to get up after [being taken down in] the second round I already knew what was about to happen… I went to the corner, coach said, ‘Okay, well the gameplan went out the window, let’s go back to do what we do.’ And he said, ‘Go throw your hands.’ Once he said that, I’m like, ‘Thank God, let’s go.’ So I came out, I knew he was going to go for the kick again so that’s why I went to the body. I jabbed him to the body to fold him in a little bit so I can come up top with the jab, three jabs across the top. And we had just literally worked that like at midnight. We were actually bull****ing… I was playing with my coach like, ‘Coach, move out the way.’ So I kept throwing jabs, he kept going back with the pads. And I said, “Oooh, that uppercut right there.’ He was just like, ‘That might be something that works.’ I’m like, ‘Ehh, if it’s there, it’s there.’ And then, s***, we end up throwing that in the fight. It’s just my instincts.”

Those instincts have gotten him far and so he continues to listen to them, giving him the exciting, high-paced boxing style he has, “My instincts tell me, ‘Man, just go.’ I don’t care if somebody wants to throw hands with me at all. I’m confident standing toe-to-toe with somebody, throwing hands. Somebody’s going to fall; it ain’t going to be me.”

Closing out the interview, Daniel James gave his prediction for how the fight will go, “I plan on getting it done in the first round… If I get it done in the first round it might be ground and pound. If I get it done in the second round it’ll be a knockout, just because of the gas tank. My gas tank is good, so some guys think they got a good gas tank but once I weather the storm and they use all their tricks, something’s coming. I know they’re watching out for that right uppercut but I got another one, it’s called a left hand.

However, he made it clear that his plan and his fight style are just to flow, “I never look for the knockout in the first anyway – I just look for the fight. Touch him up enough, he’ll fall.”

Daniel James takes on tenth-ranked Gokham Saricam on Friday, June 16, 2023 in the main card of Bellator 297 in Chicago, Illinois.

Bellator MMA returns to Chicago in June, and a local hero is among the talent announced for the Bellator 297 card on Wednesday.

Revealing the news via press release, a full eight fights have been added to the event’s line-up, including a heavyweight match-up featuring Illinois native Daniel James (15-6-1) taking on Gokhan Saricam (8-2).

Daniel James will enter the fight off a big win against UFC veteran Marcelo Golm at Bellator 293 late last month. “The American Predator” has won five straight fights, including his first two under the Bellator banner. That has landed him the #4 spot in the promotion’s heavyweight division. Saricam sits ranked at #10.

That main card match-up in joined by seven newly announced preliminary bouts, including the debut of Pieter Buist (17-6), who will face Gadzhi Rabadanov (19-4-2) in a lightweight contest. Buist formerly competed for ONE Championship.

Ranked light heavyweights Alex Polizzi (10-2), sitting at #5 in the weight class, and #7-ranked Karl Moore (11-2) will also throw down.

The remaining newly announced Bellator 297 match-ups include Jaleel Willis (16-4) vs. Ramazan Kuramagomedov (10-0) and Roman Faraldo (8-1) vs. Bobby Nash (12-4), both at welterweight, #10-ranked lightweight Archie Colgan (7-0) vs. Emmanuel Sanchez (20-8), Norbert Novenyi Jr. (6-0) vs. Kamil Oniszczuk (9-2) at middleweight, and #8-ranked Timur Khizriev (12-0) vs. Richie Smullen (10-2-1) at featherweight.

Bellator 297 is headlined by a light heavyweight championship bout as Vadim Nemkov puts his title on the line against Yoel Romero. In the co-main event, all eyes will be on Patricio Pitbull as he moves down a weight class, facing bantamweight champion Sergio Pettis in an attempt to win a championship in a third weight class.

Phil Davis vs. Corey Anderson will also face off in a main-card match-up. The event takes place June 16, 2023 at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, IL.

Temecula, CA — Bellator 293 heavyweight Daniel James believes he has shut up those who were critical of his main event billing on Friday night in Temecula, California.

James (15-6-1) was paired up with UFC vet Marcelo Golm, with the two ranked #7 and #5 in the division, respectively. An important fight, but many felt that Cat Zingano vs. Leah McCourt, the evening’s co-main event, carried more weight as a potential title eliminator.

James went on to put Golm away with a devastating three-punch combo in the third round. It wasn’t enough to see him skip the line for a title shot, but James feels that his critics just aren’t MMA fans — though they’ll be believers now, as far as his abilities go.

“Yeah I shut them up. Those people that just said that, those people are really not MMA fans. You ask those people in the street, you say ‘hey what do you do?’ [They answer] ‘I do UFC.’ What is that? They’re not fans,” James told media outlets including Cageside Press. “An MMA fan is a person that studies the arts, watches fights from all different aspects, from Bellator to UFC to ONE FC. They watch all this. Them real fans.”

“Tonight, if you was a non-believer, you’re a believer now. How could you not like it? How could you not like what I did?”

Whether you’re a believer or not, James clearly believes in his own abilities, which have seen him win five fights split between ACA and Bellator MMA.

“Yeah, this is everything I expected,” James said when asked about a journey that has brought him back to Bellator, where he began his career. “I’m on a win streak, what is it, five, six, five? That’s more than a couple. So a five-fight win streak, just like I planned.”

“I feel like right now, you’ve seen me in the toughest situations in a fight. So right now, this point in my career, there’s no such thing as losing,” he continued. “That’s just me being confident. I know I put in enough work that if I can come out of something like that — you’ve seen the choke hold, you’ve seen me coming back from these devastating kicks. You’ve seen me being on the ground; I chose to wrestle on the ground with Marcelo Golm only because my leg, he did some damage, I’m being honest in saying that.”

Next for James is healing up the leg that Golm chewed up, then he plans to get back to training, as well as spending time with his boys, who have taken up boxing. But with Linton Vassell getting the next title shot, James has been offered a spot on Bellator 297 in Chicago. It seems he’s ready to accept.

“My leg will be healed, I heal like a dog. I literally heal fast. You can’t have nothing in Chicago without me,” exclaimed James. “People are already buying tickets, some people already texted me, like ‘yo I’mma get my floor seats now.’ Chicago, they’re waiting on me. And it’s in June. So we’re there.”

The main event of Bellator 293 on Friday night in Temecula, CA was a battle of ranked heavyweights in Marcelo Golm and Daniel James.

Golm was ranked #5, James at #7 in the weight class, where Linton Vassell was expected to get the next shot at champ Ryan Bader.

The fight started out slow — but ended in a flash when the third round arrived.

In the opening round, an early front kick was timed by James, who used it to dump Golm and get in position for some ground n’ pound. But the expected onslaught never came, with Golm getting vertical again almost immediately.

The pair then wound up tied up along the fence, with Golm in control initially, and James later reversing. James would fire a couple of knees from that position, until they reversed, then reversed again.

When the pair came off the fence, still clinching, it was James coming over the top with an elbow. But Golm moved back to the fence while working the body — only for James to reverse.

You could barely slip a sheet of paper between the two for much of the opening frame, so close was the clinch between them. However James found some space at the end of the round, opening up and firing off a handful of heavy punches. None would do much damage, however.

The opening half of round two played out similar to the first. In the second half, however, Golm got the fight down, gliding into half-guard. James had his head well away from the fence, and Golm appeared to be setting up an arm-triangle choke. While he wasn’t close to pulling it off, he was eating time off the clock while in a dominant position, and adding punches to the body. If nothing else, James was losing the round and unable to do anything off his back.

After a pep talk from his corner ahead of the third, Daniel James woke up. Living up to his “American Predator” nickname, James put the fight away care of three punches: an uppercut, a left, and a right hand as Golm was already on his way down. The ref moved in to make the save, and after a disastrous second round, James had stormed back to claim victory in the third.

James called for the fight with Bader after the win. “I would love to share the cage with Bader,” James said, adding that he was a big fan of the champ.

In addition to those ranked heavyweights, what felt like a women’s featherweight title eliminator anchored the co-main event, with Cat Zingano taking on Leah McCourt. While there had been talk of an interim title being attached to the fight, that never materialized, though champ Cris Cyborg is yet to sign a new deal with the organization.

Also in action, top prospects including Lance Gibson Jr., Lucas Brennan, Sullivan Cauley and more.
