Undefeated Italian-Canadian fighter Jon Di Bella successfully made the first defense of his strawweight kickboxing title at ONE Fight Night 15 when he faced Danial ‘Mini T’ Williams at the legendary Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

Williams moved down in weight after losing to one of the best strikers in the world, Superlek Kiatmuu9, getting a title shot in his strawweight debut. Meanwhile the champ, Di Bella, had been inactive since winning his belt a year earlier against Pemian Zhang due to a dispute with ONE Championship boss Chatri Sidyodtong. With that relationship mended he was able to compete in the co-main event of this card.

They came out swinging from the opening bell, Di Bella pressing forward and kicking the leg of Williams out in an early exchange, making Danial fall to the mat. From his southpaw stance, Di Bella was able to kick the inside of the lead leg of Williams, buckling his leg several more times. A straight left hand from Jon hurt his challenger one minute in, but ‘Mini T’ recovered after staggering against the ropes briefly. His left kept finding the mark and he began to mix in body work after that, cruising to the end of a dominant first round for the champion.

Di Bella came out strong again in round two but Danial did not back down whatsoever, coming forward and landing two good right hands thirty seconds into round two. A straight left hand from Jon sat down Williams right after that but he stood back up immediately; the referee did not call a ten-count for some reason even though his hand and butt clearly hit the canvas due to the punch. Danial Williams began to switch to southpaw, likely covering for his already beaten up left calf. The challenger began to come back with his own leg kicks but Di Bella answered even stronger. Di Bella used a collar tie – illegal in kickboxing – to land a knee and got cautioned by the referee for it right before the end of the round.

The third round was more of the same. Danial Williams landed some strikes but never seemed able to take any control over the action in the fight. He had trouble breaking past the high guard of the champ, only really landing clean when he threw leg kicks, which did begin to redden the right leg of Di Bella. Still, Jon seemed to take the third round, putting him up 30-27 most likely.

The championship rounds began with Williams stepping up the pace even more after his corner told him how much he is down. He got through with some of his strikes, but Di Bella was still able to keep control and land more. A few knees in close were the best strikes from Williams in the fourth round. The boxing from Di Bella continued to be on point, though this was probably the challenger’s best round in the fight, offensively speaking. A leg kick from the champion put ‘Mini T’ to a knee in the last five seconds of the round.

Williams needed a finish going into the final round of the bout, having only a badly bruised leg on his foe’s right leg to show for his efforts through four rounds. Di Bella was more cautious and precise in the final round, he had gone away from the leg kicks in large part by this point, but his boxing was clean as ever. The fast hands, body work, and counter-striking let him cruise through the fifth round. Jon Di Bella closed the fight out with a spinning kick to the head of Williams, which the challenger somehow ate, shortly before the bell.

When the judges’ scorecards were read it was no surprise that Jonathan Di Bella was awarded the unanimous decision, earning his first ever title defense and extending his kickboxing record to 12-0.

Official Result: Jon Di Bella def. Danial Williams by Unanimous Decision

Superlek Kiatmoo9, the ONE flyweight kickboxing champion and one of the pound-for-pound best strikers on the planet, was supposed to face fellow Thai star Rodtang Jitmuangnon at ONE Fight Night 8, but when the ONE flyweight Muay Thai champion pulled out last minute, Aussie Danial Williams stepped in to save the day.

The first round saw Superlek work his kicking from distance to continually do attrition to Williams. A moment of excitement came when Williams caught a kick and threw a punch which pushed the Thai to the mat. Still, Superlek chipped away at him all round.

The second round saw Superlek do more of the same, but he opened up more. He started to use jump knees and he hurt Danial with one about halfway through the round. The Australian was tough though, and would not go away, despite being on the back foot the whole time eating kicks. Williams also could not get into the range he wanted to be in to land strikes, Superlek’s defense and longer weapons were expert at keeping him safe.

Body kicks, teep kicks, step-in knees, leg kicks, head kicks, Superlek threw it all in round three. Halfway through the round a massive head kick from Superlek which landed the knee on the head of Williams, sending him to the mat. He got up, somehow, and was surprisingly stable on his feet, but could not withstand the barrage Superlek then sent his way; an step-in knee started it, then a pair of uppercuts, a left, and a right shut the lights off, putting Williams out cold.

Superlek went and bowed to his boss, Chatri Sityodtong, following the win and embraced his opponent when Danial had regained consciousness. He retained his spot as champion with an impressive performance, which at this point is what is expected from a champion of his caliber.

Still, the Rodtang fight looms large, and is the fight that everyone wants to be made, though Rodtang is booked for a fight in May. Indeed, Superlek said in his post-fight interview that in his next fight he would like to challenge Rodtang for his flyweight world title. To cap off the night, Dom Lau announced that Superlek would receive at $50,000 bonus for his near-flawless performance.

Official Result: Superlek Kiatmoo9 def. Danial Williams by KO (knee and punches), Round 3, 1:55

ONE Championship returned to Amazon’s Prime Video platform on Friday night (Saturday local time in Singapore) for ONE Fight Night 8, featuring Thailand’s Superlek taking on short-notice foe Danial Williams in a flyweight kickboxing title fight atop the card.

The event wasn’t originally supposed to end that way, however. Initially, the long awaited heavyweight title unification bout between champion Arjan Bhullar and interim champ Anatoly Malykhin was expected to headline the card. When that fell through, Superlek was then bumped up the main event against fellow Thai star Rodtang — who was in turn forced to withdraw due to injury, opening the door for Williams to step up.

On the MMA side of things, ONE Fight Night 8 brought with it the long-awaited match-up between Itsuki Hirata and Seo Hee Ham. Japan’s Hirata had failed a hydration test last year, leading to an earlier date with UFC alum Ham falling through.

For her part, Ham was undefeated since exiting the UFC in 2016 and returning to atomweight, though she had been forced to pull out of ONE’s atomweight grand prix, losing out on a title opportunity in the process.

The co-main event of ONE Fight Night 8 featured an atomweight Muay Thai unification bout between Allycia Rodrigues and Janet Todd.

ONE Fight Night 8 goes down Friday, March 24, 2023 (Mar. 25 locally) in Singapore, with the preliminary card kicking off at 7PM ET. Full results and a live stream of the early action can be found below.

The upcoming ONE Fight Night 8 card just can’t seem to catch a break.

ONE Championship had originally booked a heavyweight title unification bout to headline the event, a fight that would have seen the return of champ Arjan Bhullar against Anatoly Malykhin. With that fight pulled recently, the Muay Thai showdown between Rodtang and Superlek was bumped up to the main event spot — but now that fight has been lost as well.

Promotion officials announced the news on Wednesday. With Rodtang out due to injury, Danial Williams has now stepped up to face Superlek.

The ONE flyweight kickboxing championship will be on the line in the bout, with Superlek having captured gold earlier this year. ONE Fight Night 8 will mark his first attempted defense of the title, with the Thai standout currently riding a six-fight win streak.

Williams was last seen competing in MMA, where he went 3-1 in 2022. In 2021, Williams went up against Rodtang at ONE on TNT 1 in a Muay Thai contest, losing a unanimous decision.

ONE Fight Night 8 goes down on Friday, March 24, 2023 at 8PM ET (Mar. 25 local time) and is now expected to move forward with the following match-ups:

Superlek Kiatmuu9 (c) vs. Danial Williams – for the ONE flyweight kickboxing championship
Allycia Rodrigues (c) vs. Janet Todd (ic) – for the ONE women’s atomweight Muay Thai world championship
Aslanbek Zikreev vs. Rui Botelho – Muay Thai
Alex Silva vs. Keito Yamakita
