Two of the most tenured veterans in women’s MMA faced off in the co-main event of Bellator 300 from San Diego, California as Cris Cyborg successfully defended her featherweight title against ‘Alpha’ Cat Zingano, winning by TKO in the first round.

Zingano was trying to become only the third person to beat Cyborg in MMA as she brought a four-fight unbeaten streak in Bellator into the fight. Cris also came in undefeated in Bellator at 5-0, with five championship bout victories to her name since signing with the promotion in 2020.

Zingano came out southpaw and shot a takedown on an orthodox Cyborg, who hit the mat initially but instantly scrambled back up and checked Cat’s chin. Cat tried to clinch up a few more times but each time Cyborg broke free while throwing big hooks. One takedown attempt two minutes in saw Zingano with her head on the mat, allowing Cyborg to slam in ground and pound. It looked potentially fight-ending for a moment but Cat scrambled to her feet.

Cyborg had several more big punches land to the chin of the challenger in the first round; Zingano was almost completely unable to touch her. With just over a minute left in the round Cat tried another poorly advised takedown and ended up on the bottom with Cyborg postured up in side control. The champion rained down hammerfists and it was only a few seconds before the referee had seen enough.

After the fight, Cris tried to go over to Zingano to make nice but Cat appeared to not be having it, responding bitterly, though her exact words were not audible on the broadcast. Cyborg then went to get her belt wrapped around her waist for a sixth time in a row.

In her post-fight interview, Cris expressed her desire to fight Leah McCourt, who had beaten Sara McMann earlier in the night by TKO. Cyborg also said she wants to fight in Japan before she retires, which must be coming soon at age 38. Regardless, fans must appreciate this MMA legend while she is still around.

Official Result: Cris Cyborg def. Cat Zingano by TKO (ground and pound) Round 1, 4:01

San Diego, CA — Cat Zingano has had her eye on Cris Cyborg for a good long time now.

“I felt like it was a matter of time, one way or the other,” Zingano, 41, explained during this week’s Bellator 300 press conference, speaking with media outlets including Cageside Press.

“Alpha” Cat (14-4) will throw down with Cyborg for the Bellator women’s featherweight title in San Diego on Saturday, but she’s prepared for the fight before. That includes during her UFC run, prior to Zingano’s arrival to Bellator in 2020. In years past, both fighters called the UFC home.

“I think there’s been three different times where we were definitely talking about it,” noted Zingano. “Even my fight against Megan Anderson [at UFC 232] was in case Amanda Nunes and Cyborg didn’t work out, so I’d be ready to jump in that night. It’s been a few different training camps getting ready for this one, and I just feel like it was a matter of time.”

Getting the chance to compete in a championship bout on a major card — quite possibly the biggest in Bellator history — is important for Zingano, who despite her veteran status has struggled to stay active and gone through more than her share of trials and tribulations.

“It’s great to have worked myself back up to this place again,” stated Zingano. “I’ve always believed in myself, definitely put in the work and the time, so it’s natural that it’s here.”

In 2015, Zingano went up against Ronda Rousey, who at the time was entrenched as the UFC women’s bantamweight champion. How different is the Zingano of 2023 compared to the one who was finished by Rousey in just 14 seconds?

“My life was completely different. It’s really— a lot more survival going on at that time. Time’s really the biggest benefit to things. Finding my rhythm again, just figuring out coaches, figuring out the new normal for me, and getting it dialed in.”

Asked what makes her a threat to the formidable Cyborg, who has held gold in Strikeforce, Invicta FC, the UFC, and Bellator, Zingano pointed to all the qualities she brings to the table.

“Everything,” said Zingano. “Skill, all the different disciplines. The years of experience. My will, my grit. My speed. Everything.”

Watch the full Bellator 300 press conference with Cat Zingano and the rest of Saturday’s main card above.

Bellator 300 arrived on Saturday at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego, CA, celebrating a significant milestone for a promotion that has been the #2 name in mixed martial arts for the better part of a decade.

Established in 2008, from its roots as a tournament-based company where title shots were earned under founder Bjorn Rebney, to its modern-day incarnation as a hybrid model with standalone fights mixed with the occasional grand prix under current CEO Scott Coker, Bellator has managed to put on some massive fights over the years.

Among them, the classics between Eddie Alvarez and Michael Chandler (the biggest shame is the trilogy was never completed), and another pair of huge fights featuring A.J. McKee and Patricio Pitbull throwing down for the promotion’s featherweight title. Cris Cyborg’s featherweight reign, the late-career resurgence of Fedor Emelianenko (who certainly had his struggles in the promotion), Ilima-Lei Macfarlane helping to make trips to Hawaii an annual occurrence — there are numerous highlights from Bellator’s run to date, and while the promotion’s future remains uncertain, it had plenty to offer at Bellator 300.

In the main event of Saturday’s megacard, Usman Nurmagomedov put his lightweight title on the line against Brent Primus, in the first lightweight grand prix semifinal (the next arrives in November, with Patricky Pitbull facing Alexander Shabliy). Two more title fights round out the Bellator 300 main card, as Cris Cyborg faces Cat Zingano in a long-awaited match-up, and Liz Carmouche faces friend Ilima-Lei Macfarlane. The latter, however, will not be eligible to win gold after missing weight on Friday.

Bellator 300 airs live on Showtime in the U.S. following online prelims; the card is available via streaming PPV in Canada. Prelims kick off at 6:30PM ET, with the main card getting underway at 10PM. Full results from the event can be found below.

Bellator 300 arrives this weekend, a milestone event for the promotion that has held the #2 slot in MMA for the better part of a decade.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Bellator card without a touch of the promotion’s fabled bad luck, with the MMA Gods scrapping not one but two title fights on a card that originally had four belts on the line. Or maybe one and a half title fights. Liz Carmouche can still retain her women’s flyweight title on Saturday, but Ilima-Lei Macfarlane, the promotion’s former 125lb champ and promotional darling, will not be eligible to win gold after missing weight for the fight.

Earlier in the week, Linton Vassell was forced to pull out of a fight with heavyweight champ Ryan Bader, removing that title fight from the San Diego card.

Weigh-ins for Bellator 300 took place Friday, with the event going down Saturday headlined by Usman Nurmagomedov vs. Brent Primus, while Cris Cyborg vs. Cat Zingano serves as co-headliner. Highlights from Friday’s weigh-ins can be found below!

The monumental Bellator 300 arrives this Saturday in San Diego, with three title fights topping the historic event.

Yes, that should have been four, but with Linton Vassell withdrawing from a heavyweight title challenge against Ryan Bader, one championship pairing was lost. The remaining card is still as strong as any Bellator offering ever has been: undefeated Usman Nurmagomedov, the promotion’s lightweight champ, meets ex-champ Brent Primus in a lightweight grand prix semifinal with the belt on the line. Aside from that main event, Cris Cyborg finally meets “Alpha” Cat Zingano at featherweight, and women’s flyweight champ Liz Carmouche takes on friend and former champion Ilima-Lei Macfarlane.

It could be the last time fight fans see Macfarlane, who has openly discussed retirement in the past year or two.

On the preliminary card, the likes of Sara McMann (facing Leah McCourt), Henry Corrales, the debuting Slim Trabelsi, and BJJ star Jena Bishop are all set to compete.

Weigh-ins for Bellator 300 will go down Friday morning, Oct. 6, in San Diego; Cageside Press is on the scene to bring you the results.

Temecula, CA — Following Bellator 293 in Temecula, California on Friday, Cat Zingano remains at the top of the women’s featherweight division.

She just doesn’t have a title to go with that ranking.

“This fight was initially offered to both me and Leah as a vacant title fight. Which would have been awesome; it’s cool to see myself still in that number one position right now,” Zingano (14-4) said following her win over Leah McCourt, an entertaining, back-and-forth battle that left the Irish fighter bloodied.

Bellator CEO Scott Coker denied the title fight claim earlier in the evening, insisting Cris Cyborg remained champ, and Zingano admitted she doesn’t know what the promotion plans to do next. “It seems like it is a vacant title, it seems like there’s no one important above me at the moment, so I guess we just have to see what happens with that.”

McCourt seemed to believe she had done enough to win the fight, and Zingano herself understands that frustration.

“I can see why she would be disappointed. It was a very big adjustment for me, her being so tall. I felt like, as I was trying to throw these kicks at her I was aiming even above my head, because she’s so much taller than me,” Zingano explained. “And that kind of made it weird for my stance and my posture, which kind of took my own feet out from under me. I feel like she did a good job and I did a good job; I think when it came to the decision, it really came down to damage.”

Watch the full Bellator 293 post-fight press conference with Cat Zingano above.

Ahead of their Bellator 293 co-main event, one of the biggest questions heading into Cat Zigano vs. Leah McCourt was whether the Northern Ireland-born McCourt could hang with Zingano on the ground.

That presumed weakness was tested early in the opening round of the women’s featherweight fight, as Zingano drove into a takedown and briefly had McCourt down — though she would pop right back up.

Much of the round was fought in the clinch, along the fence, with Zingano landing a nasty back elbow to build a mouse under one of McCourt’s eyes. But Leah McCourt was able to escape the round, even getting some control time on top in the opening round before Zingano reversed.

Zingano would finish the frame in control. Early in the second, however, it was McCourt sweeping the feet of Zingano, taking the fight down and taking the back.

There was no submission to be had, but Zingano found herself under heavy fire. Lefts and rights rained down as Zingano gave up her back— and it looked like a finish might be nigh. Yet “Alpha” Cat reversed, getting on top, putting on heavy top pressure, and sneaking in an elbow. Tragedy averted, for Zingano anyway, at least for the time being.

Zingano would eventually get hooks in, working from the back and looking for a rear-naked choke. McCourt flailed, and Zingano transitioned to top; McCourt rolled, and tried to shake Zingano off over the top, but Cat adjusted and regained her position. Another roll, with McCourt giving up her back, took them to the end of the round.

To start off the third, the pair went right back to the ground, with McCourt getting in a dominant position only to land several elbows to the back of the head. Ref Frank Trigg halted the action, taking away the position and giving McCourt a warning for the foul.

After a bit of dancing on the feet, it was McCourt landing a slick judo toss to get the fight down. McCourt worked from half-guard, as Zingano worked to the fence. Just as it seemed Zingano was going to escape up, she gave up her back, and McCourt looked to take advantage — but Zingano almost immediately reversed, ending up in McCourt’s guard. That gave the American just inside two minutes to work, in a fight that featured a number of entertaining grappling transitions.

McCourt would make it back up to her feet, giving up her back to do so, and eating a well-timed knee as they came up. Bloodied after that knee, she was able to take Zingano down, locking on a body triangle with less than a minute remaining. Then, in the final ten seconds, it was Zingano reversing to finish the fight on top!

The pair fought like the title was on the line — there had been rumors that an interim belt might have been, until the promotion opted to go in another direction — and the end result was a very entertaining 15 minutes. Zingano would take it on the scorecards, with an outlier 30-27 being a bit of a question mark in a very close fight.

Official Result: Cat Zingano def. Leah McCourt by unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28)

Bellator MMA returned to Temecula, CA on Friday night for Bellator 293, featuring a heavyweight clash between Marcelo Golm and Daniel James atop the card.

In addition to those ranked heavyweights, what felt like a women’s featherweight title eliminator anchored the co-main event, with Cat Zingano taking on Leah McCourt. While there had been talk of an interim title being attached to the fight, that never materialized, though champ Cris Cyborg is yet to sign a new deal with the organization.

Also in action, top prospects including Lance Gibson Jr., Lucas Brennan, Sullivan Cauley and more.

It certainly feels as if it has to happen now for Cat Zingano.

When she joined Bellator in 2020, she entered with high expectations from the fan base to be the big name signee that would be the B-side in a high profile bout with long-time champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino. But reality has set in over the past three years. For various reasons, “Alpha” has only fought once per year since joining the company. Per her own words, the negotiations to make a fight with Justino have fallen apart over her requests to undergo more extensive drug testing for the bout. Now with Justino entertaining the options afforded to her in free agency, Zingano must win if she wants to entice her to stay for a high profile bout. Further, Zingano must win if she hopes for Bellator to put their efforts behind her should Justino decide to pursue her options outside the company.

For the record, Zingano is still the best option for Justino that Bellator has to offer. She has benefitted from being one of the first women to sign with the UFC back in 2013 and being the B-Side against superstar Ronda Rousey in 2015 where they drew in reportedly nearly one million buys on pay-per-view. Her victories have also aged like wine when viewing them today: current UFC champion and consensus best female fighter in the world Amanda Nunes, top bantamweight contender Raquel Pennington, and former UFC and Strikeforce champion Miesha Tate. That said, at 40 years-old, any setback would undoubtedly feel like the end of the line for her journey to win a title in a major promotion.

One of the most 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 finishes EVER! 😱@leahmccourtmma is back in action as she takes on @CatZingano.#Bellator293 | Friday, 10pm ET/7pm PT | @SHOsports pic.twitter.com/s6WOZ7E3hV

While Zingano is looking to cash in the chips she’s won over the past decade, Leah McCourt is a contender very much benefitting from the here and now. A professional since 2017, “The Curse” has emerged as one of the top new prospects in the featherweight division and was signed to Bellator after just two fights. As the promotion has invested in developing talent and their foothold in Europe, McCourt has been a fixture overseas with only one of her seven Bellator fights taking place in the United States. In terms of a brand, McCourt has flourished in the spotlight at home as she has been a part of multiple Bellator broadcasts for their events in Europe, is the first female athlete from the UK to be signed to a deal with Everlast, and has appeared on the BBC network both in a profile piece and as part of the reality show Go Hard or Go Home.

Competitively, McCourt is poised for her breakthrough about as well as she can be in the big picture of the featherweight division. The 30 year-old is 7-2 overall and most recently bounced back from her first Bellator loss with a decision victory last September. The winner between herself and Zingano is expected to fight for the title next, whether Justino remains in Bellator or not. Further, with Justino expected to focus on opportunities in boxing in the coming years and UFC champion Amanda Nunes expected to be in the final fights of a storied career, McCourt could establish herself as one of the top featherweights in the world as the division looks to soon enter a new chapter. Add in the fact that McCourt could be an individual who headlines tentpole events in Europe at a time when the UFC, Bellator, and the PFL are looking to further their brands in the country, and it is a huge opportunity to say the least.

Both @CatZingano and @leahmccourtmma have gold in their sights. 👊#Bellator293 | Friday, 10pm ET/7pm PT | @SHOsports pic.twitter.com/haGeK5o18W

Reigning champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino is well aware that the window to continue competing at the elite level is not open as wide as before and the opportunities to collect lucrative paychecks against the likes of boxing star Katie Taylor could expire at any time. As such, adding to an already established legacy in Bellator may not be a priority if paydays against Taylor or a potential one-off against Kayla Harrison on the PFL’s pay-per-view event later this year are available. The Zingano/McCourt winner is expected to be next for Justino if she competes next in Bellator. Or, the winner from Friday could face the winner of the upcoming bout between former title challenger Arlene Blencowe and UFC veteran Sara McMann.

Bellator MMA returns to Tecumula, California on Friday, March 31 — with weigh-ins for the event going down Thursday morning.

Topping the card is a heavyweight affair, with UFC vet Marcelo Golm, ranked fifth in the weight class, taking on seventh-ranked Daniel James. Having made his debut with Bellator (and as a pro) back in 2014, “The American Predator” did not return to the promotion until last year, where he finished a top prospect in Tyrell Fortune.

Friday night in Temecula would give James the chance, at age 41, to prove that was no one-off, and insert himself into the title picture, with champ Ryan Bader expected to defend his belt against Linton Vassell later this year.

The co-main event might have been even more intriguing. With women’s featherweight champ Cris Cyborg yet to re-sign with the organization, Cat Zingano and Leah McCourt were looking to stake their claim as the best female 145’er active in Bellator. The winner would likely be next in line for the title, dependent on whether Cyborg re-signs sometime later this year.

Full results from Thursday’s Bellator 293 official weigh-ins can be found below. The event takes place at the Pechanga Resort and Casino on Friday, March 31, 2023.

Ahead of Thursday’s weigh-in, the welterweight match-up between Rustam Khabilov and Jaleel Willis was cancelled, per promotion officials. Cageside Press has confirmed that visa issues on Khabilov’s part resulted in the fight being scratched.

All fighters, meanwhile, successfully made weight on Thursday.
