Strawweights Bruna Brasil and Alexia Thaiara faced off in a rematch to open the UFC Seattle preliminary card on Saturday, with the pair’s first encounter outside the UFC being the only blemish on Thaiara’s record.

There was no feeling out process in the opening fight of UFC Seattle, with Thainara coming out with her kicks and letting her hands go early. The pair circled at center, Thainara landing several leg kicks and briefly clinching up. A knee, more low kicks, and finally a brief takedown followed with Brasil scrambling up so quickly it may not even have registered. A second takedown moments later off an inside trip did land, however, with Thainara on top for a few seconds before Brasil escaped out.

As the round progressed, Thainara took a little damage to the forehead, with a small hematoma beginning to form. Still, Thainara wasn’t deterred, catching a kick then landing a takedown off a perfectly executed trip. Alexia would ride out the rest of the round on top, with Brasil flat on her back when the horn blared.

Another scrappy start arrived in round two, but Brasil soon found herself put on the fence by Thainara. Alexia dug the body with punches and hit the thighs of Brasil with knees before moving those up, targeting the bread basket as well.

Off the fence, Thainara showed off more of her power before landing a key takedown. Over a minute was still on the clock in round two, with Brasil closing her guard, miles away from the fence.

Early in round three, Bruna Brasil fired a head kick, but Thainara scouted it, blocked and dumped Brasil on her back. Brasil had her guard closed initially, away from the fence, with over four minutes on the clock. That was not inducive to a scramble or reversal; in a fight that Brasil was losing, she needed to find a way back to her feet.

Brasil would make it back up about a minute later, eating a few punches along the way. They’d go back-and-forth on the feet before Thainara landed another takedown, 90 seconds left in a fight that Alexia seemed to have in the bag.

Getting back to her feet, Bruna would fire a spinning elbow in the final minute, hurting Thainara. Still, the end result was Alexia Thainara cruising to victory to avenge the only loss on her professional record.

Official Result: Alexia Thainara def. Bruna Brasil by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Strawweights Bruna Brasil and Ketlen Souza faced off in an all-Brazilian showdown at UFC Vegas 113.

Brasil was coming in off a win over Ming Shi (on Road to UFC, though it counted as a proper UFC fight), while Souza, a former Invicta champ, had lost two straight.

Souza, the shorter fighter, took this one to the fence in the opening minute, one hand wrapped around Brasil’s thigh. She couldn’t land the takedown, and Brasil reversed, only to be reversed again. Several minutes ticked off the clock in this position, and when they did hit the mat, it was Brasil in control for just a moment before they popped back up. Souza took the lead again on the feet, pressing the taller Brasil against the fence.

Round two saw more action play out at land, with about a minute of back-and-forth before Souza closed the distance, taking Brasil back to the fence. Brasil quickly reversed; Souza turned back around moments later. Again, the bulk of the round would play out on the fence, with Souza in control for much of it. Brasil, more effective at range, was seeing her offense essentially completely neutralized in this position.

Round three gave Brasil a chance to work at range, but Souza appeared up to the challenge, even firing a spinning back kick, and ripping the body. A head kick was blocked by Brasil. Souza went in on a takedown near the midway mark, and while Brasil fought it off she was pinned against the fence again. This time she wouldn’t stay there, freeing herself, getting back to center, and firing a side kick. Souza nearly landed a takedown, and Brasil was running out of time. Run out of time she did, with Ketlen Souza coming away with the decision win.

Official Result: Ketlen Souza def. Bruna Brasil by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Wang Cong, one of three Chinese fighters appearing at UFC 312 in Sydney, Australia on Saturday, looked to build on the momentum countrymate Zhu Rong had set as she took on Bruna Brasil.

Cong was 1-1 in the UFC and had dropped what many felt was the Upset of the Year against Gabriella Fernandes back in November.

Brasil opened Saturday’s flyweight contest with a crisp leg kick or two, forcing Cong to the outside. Cong would fire back with a kick of her own; Brasil returned fire in kind. Early on, the action consisted mainly of feints and kicks while the pair felt each other out. That feeling out process actually continued for most of the opening frame, with single strikes and brief exchanges making up most of the action, outside of a flurry at the very end of the round.

In round two, Wang Cong began mixing in attacks to the body. Both fighters flashed stance switches, if briefly. Brasil appeared a little hesitant to pull the trigger thanks to Cong’s diverse attacks. In comparison, almost the entirety of Brasil’s offense had been comprised of leg kicks, and to that point, Wang Cong’s mobility had not been compromised. Instead, it was Cong walking forward, firing a kick to the body, then a kick down low, and later a simple, sharp 1-2 combo that backed Brasil up. As the round wore on, Cong appeared to have found her rhythm, potentially a difference-maker in a fight that had started relatively close.

At the end of the second, Cong went on the attack, ripping the body again and forcing Brasil to retreat. Between rounds, Fighting Nerds star Caio Borralho told Brasil that it might be 1-1, but that she needed to go for it.

The problem for Brasil was that, outside of her kicks, she still couldn’t get her weapons going. Cong was the fighter putting on the pressure, backing Brasil up. Cong was feinting, ripping the body, and unleashing short combos, two or three punches in bunches. Brasil, as she had in the second, was at times flat-out retreating. If Bruna Brasil was going to find a way to get back in the fight, she had to so it quick. Instead, it was China’s Wang Cong landing a high kick, bullying the Brazilian, landing a takedown at the buzzer, and ultimately cruising to a decision victory.

Manchester – UFC strawweight Bruna Brasil went into UFC 304 knowing that she was up against Molly McCann in her home country with the crowd on her side, but she still took the decision over ‘Meatball’ on Saturday night.

“The fight against Molly for me was big challenge,” Brasil told reporters including Cageside Press at her post-fight scrum.

“In England, her house, I (imagined my performance) every day. Was amazing.”

Brasil (10-4-1) landed a lot of knees to the body of McCann, but never gave up. Regardless of how much damage she took McCann wouldn’t give Brasil the finish. The Brazilian was ready for that.

“I imagined Molly (wouldn’t) give up. So I trained for three rounds. I trained the knees a lot,” she said.

With a big win in hostile territory against the very popular McCann in such dominant fashion Brasil shot her shot for a bonus.

“I am prepared for the fight. I deserve good things. I deserve the bonus for the fight because I’m (the) underdog. I’m here in Molly’s house England,” she said.

Unfortunately for Brasil she did not earn a bonus at UFC 304, but certainly bigger fights are on the horizon for the strawweight.

Watch the entire post-fight scrum with Bruna Brasil above.

Strawweight Molly McCann, one half of the seemingly ever-present “Paddy and Molly” show in the UK, was in action at UFC 304 in Manchester, paired up with Bruna Brasil.

McCann was looking to make it two wins in a row, after picking up a victory over Diana Belbita last time out.

An early Brasil kick nearly took the legs out from under “Meatball” Molly McCann, who immediately closed the distance off the opening bell. McCann looked to get on the inside, at times bullying her way in, while Brasil focused on her kicks. One of those kicks, however, strayed low, and dropped the Brit, leaving her wincing in pain. A brief pause for McCann to recover from the accidental foul. and they got back underway.

Low blow not withstanding, McCann was showing considerable damage a mere two minutes into the fight. A welt on the forehead, redness on her lead leg, and McCann looked downright hurt. She was certainly hurt when a knee doubled her up moments later; somehow she survived, but was forced back up. Another body kick folded her again, but McCann refused to go down! Brasil went on the attack, drilling the body with knees, but McCann tied things up along the fence.

Unfortunately, when they went down, Brasil was quickly in control, threatening to take the back. McCann was able to prevent the back take, and wound up back on the feet, catching a leg and eventually taking Brasil down. Despite that late takedown, the opening frame was an unmitigated disaster for Molly McCann.

After a rough start, McCann looked to regroup in round two. She came out firing, backing Brasil up. Evading more attacks to the body, McCann closed the distance, looking for a single-leg takedown only for Brasil to fight off the initial attempt. McCann stayed on it, locking her hands and finally landing a slam with authority. McCann was too high up the body, however, while allowed Brasil to escape out almost immediately.

Brasil, meanwhile, got her own chance to be on top at the end of the frame, but likewise couldn’t make much happen. A right hand in the final ten seconds, however, dropped an off-balance McCann, coming off a spinning attack, to her back.

Round three saw Molly again come out aggressive, with the pair going to the ground in a heap off a McCann takedown. Brasil came out of that in control, however, taking the back, or at least a three-quarter position. Brasil stepped over into half-guard, getting on top with three and a half minutes left in a fight. McCann, likely in need of a finish, instead found herself on her back. She wouldn’t stay there, however, and once back up connected with a solid combo that got the crowd into it. Brasil, however, took McCann to the mat again, and took the back in a scramble. Hooks went in, and with 90 seconds on the clock, time was running out for McCann.

Not one to go easy, McCann escaped out, climbed the back, and looked for a rear-naked choke. She wound up slipping off, however, finishing the fight in a scramble but ultimately losing a decision.

Official Result: Bruna Brasil def. Molly McCann by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

A pair of rather alliterative female strawweights faced off on the UFC Vegas 86 preliminary card, with Thailand’s Loma Lookboonmee facing Bruna Brasil.

Lookboonmee, the first Thai native to compete in the UFC, was entering her eighth fight in the promotion- though she also had roughly 200 fights in Muay Thai.

It was a slow start in Lookboonmee versus Brasil, with Bruna slowly walking forward, firing a spinning back kick near the midway mark that forced her Thai opponent back. Brasil had the edge in size, but Lookboonmee was explosive when she charged forward with a combination punctuated with a body kick.

Moments later the pair would tie up along the fence, exchanging knees; Loma Lookboonmee, belying her striking background, looked to land a throw, but Brasil stayed upright and moved back to center. Lookboonmee closed out the round with a takedown in the final ten seconds.

Round two played out in similar fashion, the pair trading strike-for-strike, but without much of significance landing. More of a sparring match with a bit of clinching along the fence, which allowed Lookboonmee to show off her knees and elbows. Lookboonmee continued to favor her body kick, and Brasil fired a heavy right hand in the final minute before the pair clinched up again for a bit, then moved back to center after the break.

The third round of a close fight was a land of opportunity for someone to make a statement, but the fight remained evenly matched. Lookboonmee had the edge at range, and Brasil’s lack of offense certainly did her no favors. It was a bit of a stalemate against the fence, but the damage to the body of Brasil in particular seemed to favor Loma Lookboonmee after three rounds.

The judges agreed, and Loma Lookboonmee earned her third straight win, adding to victories over Denis Gomes and Elise Reed.

Bruna Brasil entered the UFC with a fair amount of hype. Dana White had called her Contender Series KO of Marnic Mann one of the greatest in women’s MMA history. However, her UFC went less than ideal – a losing effort against power punching Denise Gomes.

Following that defeat, Brasil went back to the Fighting Nerds team and got back to work. She decided some changes were needed to make sure that her second effort would go better.

“So, the one thing that happened was that from the first to the second fight – I started to train a bit more hard. I was always trying to escape the punches. I was always trying to get the distance control,” Brasil explained through teammate and interpretor, Caio Borralho. “So I was losing a little bit of my tempo.”

The willingness to be hit was an instant benefit to her abilities in the next fight. She got in Shanna Bannon’s face and worked her way to a mostly easy decision. For that victory, she credits the mental change of her training camp.

“Now I was like, let’s bang!” she said. “The willingness to take a punch to give a punch back. And then I was more tough in day, and that’s why I got the victory. This is what I’m getting better at every day. Take a punch and then respond right away.”

Now with all the changes made, she feels that she’ll ride them to success this weekend at UFC Vegas 86.

“It doesn’t matter how it ends. It just matters that my arm is gonna be raised at the end,” Brasil said. “That’s all that matters for me and my team.”

You can see Brasil’s next fight, a showdown with Loma Lookboonme, as part of the prelims of UFC Vegas 86. Those fights begin this Saturday at 4pm EST on ESPN+.

Blake Bilder Interview (2:17)

Kicking off this edition of TTP is our interview with UFC featherweight, Blake Bilder. Bilder discusses what it’s like to be coming off of his first loss in his fighting career – pro or amateur. He shares what he feels like he learned from the experience. Then he turns his attention to UFC Vegas 85, where he fights Jeong Yeong Lee. He talks about how he feels about that matchup, but also shares his thoughts on the venue as well. It’ll be his first UFC fight in the Apex, and will be his first time back there since the Contender Series.

Combat Countdown: Top 5 Canadian Prospects to Sign (18:15)

With a week before UFC Vegas 85 and Blake Bilder’s fight, we brought back the Combat Countdown.

Following their poor showing at UFC 297, we discussed what comes next for Canadians in the UFC. Is there a next big star? Do they have any threats to the top 5 of a division. The future looks like promising after the weekend’s results, so we take a look at some possible reinforcements. We counted down five fighters who we think should get signed by the UFC right away and who could likely make the most noise. The list contains everything from heavyweights to flyweights – so tune in. For this segment, all odds via FanDuel Sportsbook.

Bruna Brasil Interview (24:09)

Closing out this edition of TTP is our interview with UFC flyweight, Bruna Brasil. With the help of Caio Borralho with the translation work, we discuss everything leading up to her fight at UFC Vegas 86 (the card after Bilder’s). Coming off of her very first win in the octagon, Brasil will square off with Loma Lookboonme in effort to make it two straight. She also shared her thoughts on her team the Fighting Nerds and the feelings she got seeing so many signed to the UFC. Then, she gives her thoughts on which women from the team might be next up.
