Like UFC Vegas 90, UFC Vegas 118 will be remembered (or not) as the card that was overshadowed by the event that immediately followed it. Very few will recall Brendan Allen’s revenge against Chris Curtis on April 6 2024, because everybody was too busy talking about UFC 300. With the White House event coming up, UFC Vegas 118 will suffer the same fate. However, it was one of the better Apex cards that we have had, so far, this year. Before we look ahead, let’s see what’s next for the UFC Vegas 118 winners.

Gabriel Bonfim

After a successful first main event last November, the young Brazilian has now another one, this time against a former champion. While Belal Muhammad is clearly showing his age since winning the belt in July of 2024, a clean, 25-minute sweep on every judge’s scorecard is nothing to sneeze at.

With Ian Machado Garry seemingly set to face Islam Makhachev this summer and Carlos Prates most likely being next in line, guys like Michael Morales and Gabriel Bonfim cannot afford to sit on their laurels. I think a number one contender matchup between 26-year-old Morales and 28-year-old Bonfim, who have a combined 39-1 record would be one of the most exciting number one contender bouts we have had in a while.

Bonfim’s next fight: Michael Morales

Brendan Allen

Most people looked at this matchup wondering what its purpose was. In a fight where Brendan Allen seemingly has everything to lose and very little to gain, he managed to hold serve, winning a Fight of the Night bonus in the process. Though he won his third consecutive fight and was already inside the top5, unless an injury happens and the UFC needs him as a substitute, this win will not grant Allen a title opportunity. Caio Borralho, Joe Pyfer and Gregory Rodrigues are all names that could be thrown at Allen if need be, but I personally landed on Christian Leroy Duncan, should he defeat Jared Cannonier next month.

Allen’s next fight: Cannonier/Leroy Duncan winner

Tom Nolan

In what may have been the most interesting fight on the card aside from the main event, two streaking lightweights under 30 were meeting the feature bout. Despite Fares Ziam coming in with the longer win streak, it was Nolan who came out on top, nearly sweeping the Frenchman on every scorecard. With this win, the Aussie will crack the lightweight rankings and will officially be in the lion’s den. There are a few matchups that make sense, but the one that excites me the most is the winner the Baku main event going down later this month.

Nolan’s next fight: Fiziev/Torres winner

Bryce Mitchell

“Thugnasty” has now won both of his fights at bantamweight since making the move down. He defeated a known commodity in Said Nurmagomedov and has now taken the 0 of youngster Santiago Luna. This division is too deep to give Mitchell a ranked opponent yet as there are a lot of names more deserving of that opportunity. I think Kai Asakura or Charles Jourdain would be great matchups, but I really like the storyline with Aleksandre Topuria. Mitchell lost to Ilia at featherweight, but can he get his revenge on the Topuria family by beating Aleksandre?

Mitchell’s next fight: Aleksandre Topuria

Iwo Baraniewski

In just seven months, Iwo Baraniewski has not only won three fights, but he has made his brand identity very clear with the UFC fanbase. Another name who has proven to be all gas no brakes type of fighter is Abdul-Rahman Yakhyaev, who is favoured to beat Julius Walker later this month. Why not put those two together and see who comes out on top?

Baraniewski’s next fight: Yakhyaev/Walker winner

Las Vegas — Middleweight Brendan Allen went the distance in Saturday’s UFC Vegas 118 co-main event, coming away with a decision win, and sharing in the Fight of the Night bonus with opponent Edmen Shahbazyan.

Speaking with media outlets including Cageside Press following the bout, Allen (27-7) reflected on the 15-minute war, and compared his performance against Shahbazyan’s to champ Sean Strickland’s.

“Sometimes you gotta just be a dog and walk him. And that’s what I did, I walked him down, walked him down. That’s what I was doing. Sean won off of staying on his back foot and throwing a jab, but I’m going to give you some power shots, make it dirty.”

In the end, Allen was thoroughly upbeat about his performance. “It was fun. I hope everyone enjoyed it. That’s what I come to do, I come to fight no matter what. Win or lose, I’m coming to fight. I guess I’m not the most likeable guy, I don’t got the most followers or none of that, but I can f*cking fight. I’m 15-4 in this promotion, I’ve fought the best guys I can fight. He was young, he’s motivated as f*ck, he’s a very skilled guy, and he earned his shot.”

Allen added that “he pushed me, he made me find a new version of myself. He motivated me, so hats off to Edmen.”

What comes next for Brendan Allen is anyone’s guess. He’s long been on the outskirts of the title picture at 185lbs, and is currently riding a three-fight win streak. Yet sitting in the #4 spot in the division, there are still a few names ahead of him in line.

“Man it’s hard to say. I don’t think I deserve anything. I try to earn everything I get. F*ck, I hope Sean goes out, he’s the champion, so hopefully he picks me,” exclaimed Allen. “Let’s run this sh*t back. It’s been six years since we fought, I think I was beating him going into it.”

Brendan Allen lost to current champ Sean Strickland by TKO back in November 2020, but added that if you watch their fight from different angles, it shows that Strickland didn’t land on him “with the strikes said. It wasn’t there.”

“I think I get him out of there now. I think Edmen’s a better version of him. He’s younger, he’s more technical, he’s faster. I think Edmen’s a better version of him, and I think I get Sean out of there, and new.”

If not, Allen is open to fighting Nassourdine Imavov, who he also has a loss to, or the winner of Dricus Du Plessis vs. Kamaru Usman. “We’ll see. Right now I’m going to go get these injuries checked, I’m going to talk with Hunter [Campbell, UFC Chief Business Officer], and we’ll see what’s next.”

UFC Vegas 118 seemed like something of a stopgap card between Macau and the upcoming White House spectacle next weekend, but a weak event on paper paid off with plenty of action in the cage.

Seven finishes and some exciting fights gave those who tuned in something to stick around for, with Ketlen Souza getting the ball rolling with a head kick finish in her rematch with Ariane Carnelossi.

Souza didn’t end up with a Performance of the Night bonus on Saturday, but main card opener Iwo Baraniewski did. His finish of Junior Tafa was set up with a nasty leg kick that spun Tafa right around; a deluge of punches to the downed Tafa followed.

Edgar Chairez picked up the other Performance bonus at UFC Vegas 118, for his submission of Bruno Silva. Set up with a knockdown, Chairez pounced, took the back and locked up a rear-naked choke for the win.

Fight of the Night honors at UFC Vegas 118 went to Brendan Allen and Edmen Shahbazyan, who made up the night’s co-main event. The spirited affair saw Allen come away with a unanimous decision win.

The remaining finishers on the card all pick up $25,000 extra. Those are Souza, Joanderson Brito, Chelsea Chandler, Alessandro Costa, and Bryce Mitchell. Brito called for a bonus after his win, a move that more often than not results in the UFC passing fighters over for a performance bonus.

Brendan Allen survived a three-round war with Edmen Shahbazyan at UFC Vegas 118 on Saturday night, grinding out a hard-fought victory before immediately turning his attention toward a much bigger target.

After fending off the dangerous striker in a back-and-forth middleweight battle, Allen used his post-fight interview to call for a showdown with middleweight champion Sean Strickland, setting the stage for a potential grudge match between two of the division’s most outspoken contenders.

Round 1 – Allen and Shahbazyan wasted no time planting themselves in the center of the Octagon and letting their hands go. Allen’s jab was snapping out like a piston, landing clean and often, while Shahbazyan answered with jabs of his own that simply didn’t carry the same sting.

Every time Shahbazyan threw a shot or two, Allen came right back with a combination. It became a game of “your go, I go,” except Allen’s defense was a step ahead, slipping and avoiding many of the attacks coming his way while still finding openings to fire back.

Allen shot in for a takedown midway through the round, but Shahbazyan stuffed it and briefly forced Allen against the fence. Shahbazyan quickly circled back to the center, where both men were clearly most comfortable exchanging.

As the round entered the final minute, Allen appeared to slow ever so slightly and Shahbazyan immediately took notice. The former title hopeful started opening up with heavier combinations and found more success as he pushed forward. Allen tried to change levels for another takedown, but once again Shahbazyan shut the door.

Sensing momentum swinging his way, Shahbazyan began unloading powerful combinations and forcing Allen to react. Allen mixed in leg kicks to slow him down, but Shahbazyan continued circling and looking for openings. In the final seconds, Allen launched forward with a flying knee attempt, only to get clipped by a sharp Shahbazyan combination before the horn sounded to end an entertaining opening round.

Round 2 – Round 2 opened with Allen immediately pushing the pace, landing a quick flurry while Shahbazyan stayed patient and looked for opportunities to counter. The slower tempo seemed to frustrate Allen, who wasn’t interested in giving Shahbazyan time to settle into a rhythm and repeatedly forced exchanges whenever the action stalled.

The exchange got heated enough that Allen changed levels for a takedown attempt, but Shahbazyan defended it well. Allen quickly abandoned the wrestling and went right back to applying pressure, clearly trying to drag Shahbazyan into a firefight.

As the round progressed, Shahbazyan appeared to slow down and reverted to throwing mostly single shots. That played directly into Allen’s hands, as Allen refused to throw just one strike at a time. Every attack came in combinations, keeping Shahbazyan on the back foot and forcing him to react.

To Shahbazyan’s credit, he found moments of success when Allen left openings. He landed several heavy counters that got the crowd’s attention and reminded everyone of his power. Still, it wasn’t enough to slow Allen’s forward march, as the Louisiana native continued pressing the action and controlling the pace through the majority of the round.

Round 3 – The third round started with a show of respect as the two fighters briefly smiled and touched gloves before immediately getting back to business. Allen came out firing, landing a hard combination with each shot carrying more power than the last. Shahbazyan welcomed the exchange, cracking Allen with a clean right hand of his own before circling away and refusing to get trapped against the fence.

With the fight appearing razor-close heading into the final five minutes, both men fought like they knew this round could decide the outcome.

Shahbazyan found success attacking the head and body, while Allen answered with a nasty elbow over the top that landed flush. Shahbazyan bit down on his mouthpiece and fired back with heavy hooks that connected cleanly, but Allen refused to give an inch, immediately responding with combinations and continuing to look for elbows that could open up cuts.

At one point Allen closed the distance a little too aggressively, allowing Shahbazyan to tie him up and press him against the fence. The clinch gave Shahbazyan a brief chance to catch his breath, but Allen quickly worked free and went right back to applying pressure.

With under 30 seconds remaining, Allen changed levels and finally secured a single-leg takedown. Shahbazyan scrambled back to his feet almost immediately, and the two unloaded everything they had left in a furious exchange as the final horn sounded, closing out a highly competitive and entertaining fight.

Official Result: Brendan Allen def. Edmen Shahbazyan via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Brendan Allen isn’t worried about what the rankings say heading into UFC Vegas 118. The #4 ranked middleweight is putting his spot on the line against dangerous unranked contender Edmen Shahbazyan on Saturday night.

“To go from unranked to top five is a huge jump, and I’m sure he’s super motivated. It’s kind of like dangling right in front of his face, and my job is to go steal it back,” Allen told reporters including Cageside Press on Wednesday.

“I asked for it. He was the next guy in line that didn’t have a fight. Everyone else had a fight or didn’t want to fight me I guess so he was just the next guy. On a win streak so give him the opportunity. Let’s see.”

Allen (26-7) accepted the matchup with Shahbazyan despite his opponent being unranked and Allen currently holding the #4 spot in the middleweight division. The booking has left many fans questioning why Allen would take such a significant risk against a dangerous opponent with little upside in the rankings.

“I like money. I don’t like sitting out. Sitting out doesn’t do me no good it’s only going to make me worse. I’m only getting older by the day. If I’m not really fighting I’m not training as much or as hard. I need to stay growing, I need to stay improving, stay relevant,” he said.

Allen said he was originally targeted to face former UFC middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis at UFC Vegas 118, but according to Allen, the matchup never materialized after du Plessis declined the fight. That offered some context as to why Allen ultimately accepted a bout against the unranked Shahbazyan despite the risk to his position in the division.

“I was supposed to have Dricus (du Plessis) for this one but he’s a b*tch. Didn’t want to fight,” he said.

When asked why he thinks du Plessis said no to a bout with him Allen cracked a smile.

“Because he’s a b*tch.”

Watch the entire media day scrum with Brendan Allen above. He faces Edmen Shahbazyan at UFC Vegas 118 on Saturday night.

You might be surprised to see middleweight contender Brendan Allen training alongside champ Khamzat Chimaev, given the pair could potentially fight some day.

Then again, Chimaev appears to have brought in an all-star roster of training partners for his fight with Sean Strickland atop UFC 328. Names include Allen, Khalil Rountree Jr., Pat Downey, and Baisangur Susurkaev, among others, plus Chimaev’s own crew. “It’s been a great opportunity, it’s been a great experience,” Allen (26-7) told media outlets including Cageside Press on Thursday. “I’ve learned a lot, had a lot of good goes, and what a way for me to jump into camp than finishing up with the champ at the end of his camp.”

“The team was great, creating a bond with Khamzat was great, he’s a good friend to me now, and I look forward to the future.”

Of course, Allen was once campaigning for a fight with Chimaev, and even spoke up to get it. That’s something he addressed wit hthe UFC middleweight champion in advance of working with him.

“I know it’s going to come out eventually that I used to talk sh*t or talk about Khamzat. But I had that conversation with him and his team before I came here. It was just trying to get the fight. I wanted to fight him, I knew he had the biggest name at the time, I’m always trying to fight the best guy I can fight,” Allen explained. “But after being here with him, sharing rounds with him, talking with him, communicating with him, creating that bond, I think he’s an awesome guy. I think he’s a standup guy. I think that old adage of him as a wild guy, I don’t know that Chimaev. All I know is the Chimaev that I got to meet this time, and I consider him a good friend at this point.”

Chimaev and Strickland face off at UFC 328 in New Jersey in just over a week’s time. Brendan Allen meets Edmen Shahbazyan on June 6, 2026 at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas.

UFC Vancouver was a fun card that saw Canadian fighters go 5-2 on the night, 6-2 if you count Brendan Allen, who walked out with the Canadian flag since his mother is from the Great White North. In the main event, the aforementioned Allen broke the streaking Reinier de Ridder, whose corner had to throw the towel between the 4th and 5th rounds. A standout performance from Allen who filled in for Anthony Hernandez on short notice. We also saw important divisional wins from Mike Malott, Aiemann Zahabi and Manon Fiorot. Before we move on to Abu Dhabi, let’s first look at what’s next for Saturday’s winners.

Brendan Allen

Like him or not, what Brendan Allen pulled off on Saturday was pretty badass. He went on a seven-fight win streak before losing two straights. After that, he admittedly did some soul searching before coming back with a win over Marvin Vettori in July. Then, he accepted a fight on short notice against the red hot Reinier de Ridder, with nearly everyone counting him out. He survived the first round and followed it up with three dominating rounds on top, landing ground-and-pound and making RDR throw the towel on the stool.

It’s by far the best win of his career and it puts him in an interesting spot. I don’t think it makes him the number 1 contender like RDR may have been, but it does put him either one or two fights away. He called out Khamzat Chimaev, Dricus Du Plessis and Sean Strickland. Out of those, the Strickland rematch is the most appealing to me. A lot has changed from where they were in their first meeting and given current circumstances, they would both be coming into it with something to prove.

Allen’s next fight: Sean Strickland

Mike Malott

For as strange as this fight was, with the low blows and the not-taking-a-point of it all, Kevin Holland is still without a doubt the best scalp of Mike Malott’s career. The Ontario native now once again finds himself on a three-fight win streak, just like he did when he first came into the promotion. And while this win over the ranked Holland may very well get him into the top15, it’s quite obvious that Malott has lost some of the swagger he had when he first broke into the UFC. The KO over Charles Radtke was nice, but it’s sandwiched between two very tepid decision wins over this current win streak. His confidence may still be a bit shaken from the collapse against Neil Magny, which is why I wouldn’t push him up the welterweight ladder just yet. Someone who’s also on the brink of the top15 makes more sense, someone like the winner of the Gabriel Bonfim vs Randy Brown Apex headliner.

Malott’s next fight: Bonfim/Brown winner

Aiemann Zahabi

Aiemann Zahabi will be turning 38 in a month, yet you wouldn’t know it if you looked at the streak he’s on. Usually, when fighters get to this age, they’re on the downswing, but Zahabi has kept improving and is on by far the best stretch of his professional career. He was awarded a controversial decision in May against Jose Aldo, and while this one was a bit more convincing, I don’t think a split decision against Chito Vera will be enough to grant him a shot at the title.

With Merab Dvalishvili cleaning out the division at the pace he is, someone like Zahabi could become next in line by virtue of everyone in front of him already having lost to the champion. Still, I think he needs a signature win to get his ticket to the dance. The perfect opponent is Deiveson Figueiredo. A known name, a former champion, and someone who’s just outside the top5 and is coming off a win.

Zahabi’s next fight: Deiveson Figueiredo

Manon Fiorot

Part of the reason it took so long for Manon Fiorot to be awarded her title shot last May was because she was coming off five impressive, but unassuming decision victories. Having now lost to the champion, it was probably going to take just as long to earn it all back. That’s unless she went back to her finishing ways as she did in her first two UFC fights. Well, I don’t think the Frenchwoman could’ve asked for anything more than a 74-second KO of Jasmine Jasudavicius, who was coming in on a five-fight win streak.

As good as this KO was for her stock, Fiorot will need at least one or two more of those before the UFC throws her back in a title shot. There’s a fight coming up between two top10 flyweights, Maycee Barber and Karine Silva, if Fiorot knockouts the winner of that fight like she did Jasudavicius, then she might force the UFC’s hand.

Fiorot’s next fight: Barber/Silva winner

Charles Jourdain

Charles Jourdain showed us while they call him “Air” on Saturday when he leaped in the air to land a massive flying knee that floored Davey Grant. The ever-durable Grant was still so stunned he had no chance of defending Jourdain’s guillotine. The fan favourite and known action fighter is now 2-0 since making the move down to 145 lbs. Going from Victor Henry to Davey Grant was a reasonable jump in competition, so I think Jourdain deserves another similar increase. I think someone like Chris Gutierrez, who was ranked at one point and whose recent losses are to names like Pedro Munhoz, Song Yadong and Farid Basharat, would tell us a lot about what we have with Jourdain at bantamweight.

Jourdain’s next fight: Chris Gutierrez

Kyle Nelson

Even though Kyle Nelson might have thought he had scored a late first-round TKO, he still ended up walking out with a unanimous decision victory. The Canadian’s had a little bit of a career resurgence as of late. It’s flown mostly under the radar, but he’s 4-1 in his last 5, with his only loss coming against the upcoming main eventer Steve “Mean Machine” Garcia. After flip-flopping between featherweight and lightweight, if Nelson plans on staying at 155 lbs, I think the perfect opponent is the one that fought right before him on Saturday. Drew Dober, who knocked out Kyle Prepolec in the prelims headliner, would undoubtedly make a fun scrap with Nelson.

Nelson’s next fight: Drew Dober

Vancouver — Perhaps surprising many, given he took the fight on short notice in place of Anthony “Fluffy” Hernandez, Brendan Allen got the job done in the UFC Vancouver main event, leaving Reinier de Ridder unable to continue after four rounds.

Allen (26-7) had an inkling such an ending could be in the offing, given de Ridder had been defeated in similar fashion during his ONE Championship days.

“You can see it when he fought the Russian guy for the second time in ONE,” Allen told media outlets including Cageside Press following UFC Vancouver, referring to RDR’s rematch with Anatoly Malykhin in March of last year. “He did the same thing, I think third or fourth round, same thing.”

“25 minutes is a very, very long time to take punishment. And I didn’t think he’d be able to do it. He took a round longer than I thought, but I also didn’t start off too hot in the first. So three rounds of dominance.”

The slow start on Allen’s part saw him taken down and fending off a rear-naked choke; asked what might have prompted it, Allen pointed to the short-notice nature of the five-round fight. “Five rounds, three and a half weeks of training.”

Allen called out the likes of middleweight champ Khamzat Chimaev and Dricus Du Plessis following the victory, his second straight. With Nassourdine Imavov and Anthony Hernandez almost certainly ahead of “All In,” however, it remains to be seen what comes next.

What he’s at least hoping for, however, is to take de Ridder’s ranking. “We know how these politics work, for some reason they don’t like me. So I’ll probably be f*cking six, seven. But watch my bio, that b*tch is going to say #4 here in a couple minutes. So to me, I’m #4 in the world. I beat #4, I’m #4. They did that sh*t to me after I beat Andre Muniz. Nah, not again.”

Watch the full UFC Vancouver post-fight press conference with Brendan Allen above.

Round 1 – De Ridder opened with a single-leg attempt, but Allen stuffed it and landed a knee before pressing him against the fence.

Allen worked from the clinch, looking for body shots and a potential takedown, but de Ridder reversed the position beautifully and took top control. He immediately began setting up an arm-triangle choke and smoothly transitioned into mount.

De Ridder methodically tightened the choke, but Allen stayed composed and managed to slip free. As Allen turned belly-down to defend, de Ridder transitioned to back control and locked in a body triangle.

Allen continued to roll from belly-down to his back to fend off the choke, but de Ridder remained in dominant position, actively attacking the neck. Allen stayed patient and survived, but the opening round was clearly de Ridder’s.

De Ridder landed a few punches from the back, prompting Allen to protest what he believed were shots to the back of the head, but the round ended before he could mount any offense.

Round 2 – De Ridder started the second round targeting the body with kicks, but Allen immediately responded with sharp boxing combinations, putting pressure on the Dutchman. De Ridder closed the distance and initiated the clinch, once again hunting for takedown opportunities.

Allen fought off the takedown as long as he could, but de Ridder methodically dragged him to the canvas. However, this time Allen quickly reversed the position and took top control, landing strikes from above.

From his back, de Ridder stayed active, threatening submissions while absorbing ground-and-pound. Allen maintained control and landed clean elbows, keeping damage flowing even as de Ridder tried to use his legs to create space and attack.

Round 3 – Allen came out aggressively to start the round, immediately landing strikes on de Ridder. De Ridder shot for a single-leg takedown, and although Allen tried to scramble free, he was ultimately dragged to the mat. De Ridder worked to secure back control, but Allen initially defended well.

However, de Ridder eventually took the back, locked in a body triangle, and began attacking the neck with more than four minutes still remaining. Allen managed to spin into him and reverse the position, ending up on top.

From there, Allen began landing ground-and-pound on a visibly fatigued de Ridder. As Allen stood to continue striking from top, de Ridder threatened an inverted triangle choke — but Allen stayed composed and escaped the submission attempt.

Round 4 – Allen wasted no time in the fourth round, immediately shooting in, lifting de Ridder, and taking him to the canvas. De Ridder looked visibly exhausted as Allen maintained dominant top control with relentless pressure.

De Ridder tried to use his legs to create space, but Allen remained composed, continuing to score with steady ground-and-pound. He even threatened a straight armbar, though de Ridder had just enough left to defend.

Allen closed the round firmly in control, landing strikes until the horn sounded.

De Ridder was unable to answer the bell for the fifth round, and the fight was waved off.

Brendan Allen’s gamble paid off.
