UFC Mexico City featured a 13-fight card and a six-fight main card for the promotion’s first trip to Mexico in the calendar year of 2026. In the main event, former flyweight champion, and the pride of Mexico, Brandon Moreno engaged in a five-round scrap with short-notice youngster Lone’er Kavanagh. In the co-main event, former bantamweight title challenger Marlon “Chito” Vera took on red-hot David Martinez in a pivotal 135lb “changing of the guard” type-of-fight. All losers from the Mexico City card are now riding losing streaks, so some interesting matchups (or roster cuts) lie ahead on this edition of What’s Next.

Brandon Moreno

Brandon Moreno was out-struck and looked a step behind at times in his unanimous decision loss to Lone’er Kavanagh in the main event of UFC Mexico City on Saturday. Massive upset here, as #6 ranked Moreno fell to Kavanagh who is unranked and has only been with the promotion for less than two years. Moreno is now on a two-fight losing streak and is 2-3 since losing his belt to Alexandre Pantoja in 2023.

No need to reinvent the wheel here for the 32-year-old Mexican born fighter, either rebook the Almabayev fight or give him the winner of (#13) Charles Johnson vs (#14) Bruno Silva. With the latter making more sense. Bruno was originally going to take on Kavanagh on March 14 before Almabayev was injured and withdrew from his main event with Brandon, resulting in the matchup fans watched Saturday.

If (#8) Asu Almabayev is all healed up and timing makes sense, that’d be a good second option. But giving Moreno either the fighter that handed Kavanagh his first and only loss (via finish as well) in Johnson, or a fighter Kavanagh was matched against, in Silva, is more appealing. Both men are ranked and it’d still be a solid co-main or main event on a Fight Night card.

Moreno’s next fight: Charles Johnson vs Bruno Silva Winner or Asu Almabayev

Marlon Vera

David Martinez held off Marlon Vera to win a unanimous decision on Saturday, utilizing his quick movement to ensure the largest victory of his career to date. Martinez entered the fight ranked at #10 while Chito was at #9. Marlon is now on a four-fight losing streak stemming from his March of 2024, unsuccessful title attempt opposite Sean O’Malley. Marlon’s last win came in August of 2023 against Pedro Munhoz via unanimous decision.

The perfect next fight for Vera here would be against (#12) Kyler Phillips. Kyler is on a two-fight skid after losing a pair of unanimous decisions to Rob Font and Vinicius Oliveira. His last victory came in March of 2024 against one Pedro Munhoz by way of unanimous decision. Great fight to make here, two strikers that have been in nothing but back and forth decisions recently. Both guys need a win, obviously Chito a bit more, but this would be an excellent main card fight, nonetheless. Winner hangs on to a ranking.

Vera’s next fight: Kyler Phillips

Daniel Zellhuber

King Green proved once again that he’s still here to compete as the 39-year veteran wobbled and stopped 26-year-old Daniel Zellhuber to secure the second round TKO victory on Saturday. Zellhuber now falls to 3-4 with the UFC and has dropped his last three fights. All is not lost for the 2021 Contender Series fighter, who had an amazing 2024 calendar year (including a Fight of the Year candidate against Esteban Ribovics). Daniel needs a reset type of fight but winnable and with a solid striking skilled name.

Excellent fighter would be a guy like Edson Barboza. Edson is a respected veteran with 32 fights with the promotion. Barboza is winless since 2023 and has lost his last three including his lightweight debut in his last fight to a returning (from mini-retirement) Jalin Turner. Barboza was finished midway through the first round with punches. Daniel would be a great next opponent.

Hate to make it seem like Zelhuber is beating on the older dogs of the division, but this is too sweet of a matchup to pass up. Barboza poses a lot different of a challenge than Green on the feet, and it’d keep Zellhuber in a standup firefight for fans. Good Fight Night main card or feature prelim bout with the winner getting back on the right track as this fight would do some heavy lifting for Barboza too.

Zellhuber’s next fight: Edson Barboza

Felipe Bunes

Edgar Chairez and Felipe Bunes engaged in a spirited back and forth scrap that eventually saw Mexican born Chairez edge out his opponent at UFC Mexico City. 36-year-old Bunes now falls to 1-3 under the promotional banner and is on a two-fight losing skid. Granted, Felipe’s debut was against now flyweight champion Joshua Van, back in early 2024. But Felipe’s only win in the UFC came against Jose Johnson via first round armbar.

Easy booking here as Bunes might get into some trouble here hanging onto his spot with the promotion. Let Felipe fight Kevin Borjas who fought and lost just before him on the main card of UFC Mexico City. Borjas is in a similar position to Felipe with the promotion and had the same UFC debut opponent. They are also now 1-2 in their last three and the timing would match up. With loser likely facing the axe from the promotion.

Bunes’s next fight: Kevin Borjas

Kevin Borjas

Imanol Rodriguez stayed undefeated as he dropped and finished Kevin Borjas on the main card of UFC Mexico City on Saturday. Despite a valiant early effort, Borjas now has the misfortune of owning the abysmal promotional record of 1-4. Kevin Borjas should take on Felipe Bunes, it could land anywhere on a card. Both men come to fight regardless of their win/loss rate with the UFC. Borjas, like Felipe, also had his UFC debut against the now flyweight champion Joshua Van (though it was in late 2023).

Borjas’s next fight: Felipe Bunes

Angel Pacheco

Kicking off the main card on Saturday, Santiago Luna stayed perfect as he turned in a stellar 15 minutes of work, defeating Angel Pacheco in draining unanimous decision affair. 34-year-old Pacheco is now 0-2 with the UFC since being signed following his 2023 Contender Series loss to Danny Silva. This was also his first fight since March of 2024.

Unfortunately for Pacheco, it’d be extremely surprising if he wasn’t released here. Luna is now 2-0 with the UFC. His first opponent, Quang Le, has since been released. Even Coalan Loughran, who beat Pacheco, is no longer with the organization.

Angel should have to look no further than the undercard of UFC Mexico City for his next opponent (That is, as long as both of these aren’t cut anyways). Pacheco should move back up to 145lbs (as he did for his Contender Series fight) and take on Erik Silva. Erik was choked out by Francis Marshall in the first round of their bout. The 2022 Contender Series veteran is 0-3 with the UFC, though he did win his DWCS fight (sorry Angel). Also worth noting, Silva has yet to make it to the final bell in a UFC fight.

Pacheco’s next fight: Erik Silva

Brandon Moreno was booked into the UFC Mexico City main event expecting to face Asu Almabayev.

Thanks to an injury to Almabayev, the best the UFC could do was Lone’er Kavanagh. One of the more lopsided main events in recent memory, given the British flyweight was ranked outside of the top 15, and was coming off a loss to Charles Johnson.

A win by Kavanagh would be considered nothing short of a massive upset. Upset of the Year, perhaps, even in February. The MMA Gods certainly are tricksters.

Moreno opened the first round putting Kavanagh off-balance with one of his first punches. The Brit regrouped and reset, looking for a way in on the ex-champ. Moreno fired a left, but hit air. Kavanagh snapped a kick, but didn’t connect either. Kavanagh went after the lead leg of Moreno, playing the long game to chip away at his mobility.

By the second round, those kicks had begun to have the desired effect, as Moreno could be seen shaking his leg out, and taking shorter steps. Later in the round, it was Kavanagh coming on strong, hurting Moreno! Moreno ducked down and was nearly smoked by a Kavanagh head kick! The ex-champ was under fire though he would manage to pull out of harm’s way and survive.

Lone'er Kavanagh connects in RD2! 🎯

Round three saw Moreno coming forward, Kavanagh circling outside. Kavanagh just touched Moreno with a kick. Moreno fired an overhand right. At that point you could really see the color on Moreno’s left calf. Purple. Nasty.

Moreno took the fight to the fence, pursing a takedown. Had a body lock, looked for the throw, nope. No such luck. So far Kavanagh was fighting it off. Looking to fight hands and break Moreno’s grip. Moreno fired knees to the thigh. Off the fence, Kavanagh went after another calf kick, and Moreno drove into a takedown again. Kavanagh fought that off, finishing off the round.

Round four saw Moreo pursuing a takedown again to start things off. Given Kavanagh’s leg kicks and solid work in the standup, it seemed like Moreno had seen the grappling as a path to victory. He wasn’t making much progress actually landing the takedown but was in the driver’s seat. Landing more knees to the thigh. Eating time off the clock.

Come round five, Brandon Moreno was, quite shockingly, going to need a finish to pull out a win. Kavanagh, in just his fourth UFC fight, all of 26 years old, had fought a smart gameplan and outclassed Moreno on the feet. His calf kicks had hampered Moreno’s movement, and Moreno, as a result, went right back to a takedown against the fence to start the final frame. No luck again, and they were restarted at center. Kavanagh hit another calf kick.

Moreno took the fight to the fence again, pursuing a high crotch single leg takedown. Again, it wasn’t there. Moreno’s face was showing plenty of damage. Kavanagh barely had a scratch on him. A massive upset was in the making, and with Moreno unable to find a finish, that was the end result.

The smart money was on Brandon Moreno tonight. At home in Mexico City. Former two-time champ. Facing a kid in his fourth UFC fight. Lone’er Kavanagh announced himself tonight. He will be in the rankings next week, and will be in another big fight next.

Official Result: Lone’er Kavanagh def. Brandon Moreno by unanimous decision (49-46, 48-47, 48-47)

Former two-time flyweight champion Brandon Moreno returned to action at UFC Mexico City, headlining in his home country once again.

Saturday’s main event wasn’t the fight originally expected, however. Moreno had been booked against a ranked opponent in Asu Almabayev, a fight that if nothing else featured two highly-ranked fighters. With Almabayev out of the fight, however, the UFC was left scrambling for an opponent. And as it turned out, they couldn’t seem to find one in the top 15.

Instead, it was prospect Lone’er Kavanagh answering the call, despite coming off a loss against Charles Johnson. England’s Kavanagh had been undefeated prior to the Johns setback, and was still considered a flyweight of the future. He was going to try to make the future the present against the always dangerous Moreno in the UFC Mexico City main event at the Arena CDMX on Saturday.

In the co-main event, it was Chito Vera of Ecuador looking to snap a three-fight skid when he took on David Martinez. Also on the card, veteran King Green was paired up with Daniel Zellhuber in a highly anticipated lightweight match-up.

Following UFC Mexico City, tune in for the event’s post-fight press conference to stay on top of all the latest news. A live stream can be found above.

Yet he remains a top prospect at 125lbs, and will have a chance to prove it come Saturday at the CDMX Arena in Mexico City, Mexico.

In the co-main event, Ecuador’s Chito Vera faced off against rising star David Martinez in a key bantamweight fight. Another Mexican up-and-comer, Daniel Zellhuber, was paired up with veteran King Green.

Under the bright lights of Arena CDMX, Mexico’s fighting pride returns home with something to prove. Former flyweight champion Brandon Moreno steps back into familiar territory on Saturday night, headlining UFC Mexico City against surging contender Lone’er Kavanagh.

Moreno (23-9-2) was originally scheduled to face Asu Almabayev at UFC Mexico City, but an injury forced the Kazakh contender off the card. Stepping in to replace him is Kavanagh, who now finds himself thrust into a high-profile opportunity against a former champion on hostile territory. The late opponent change adds another layer of intrigue to an already pivotal flyweight clash.

“I was fine with it. UFC made it clear that they would get me another opponent, so it wasn’t a big deal,” Moreno told reporters on Wednsday.

“I spoke with my team and figured the work had already been done, we had already made our way to Mexico City. The physical toll of training, the financial cost of camp and getting everybody to Mexico, so canceling the fight never crossed my mind.”

The switch raised eyebrows among fans, particularly given that Kavanagh is coming off a knockout loss to Charles Johnson. Still, the former flyweight champion understands that while the replacement may not carry the biggest name value, he remains a dangerous and unpredictable threat inside the cage.

“Obviously in name value he offers nothing, but he’s still very dangerous.
Asked about the possibility of competing on the UFC’s proposed White House card later this year, Moreno didn’t hesitate when addressing the speculation. The former champion made it clear that the idea holds no appeal for him in the least.

“Brother, I want you to tell me, why would I want to fight there,” said Moreno.

UFC Mexico City has a main event again, and it’s a bizarre one at first glance.

After Asu Almabayev was forced out of the headlining bout on February 28, where he was to fight Brandon Moreno (23-9-2), the promotion has tapped the #15-ranked flyweight, Lone’er Kavanagh (9-1).

Moreno, a former two-time UFC champion at 125lbs, is ranked #4 in the weight class. Somehow, no one was available from #5 down, all the way to Kavanagh.

Bizarre to say the least. Kavanagh, 26, is 2-1 under the UFC banner, and coming off a loss to Charles “Inner G” Johnson, the first setback of his career. It’s rare to see a fighter get this kind of push off a loss, but with the event just weeks away, a body was needed.

Kavanagh came to the UFC by way of Dana White’s Contender Series in 2024, and was previously a highly touted, undefeated prospect for Cage Warriors, the U.K.’s premiere MMA promotion.

The timing of the fight likely played a role: Kavanagh had been scheduled to face Buno Silva in March.

With Kavangh stepping in, UFC Mexico on February 28 at the CDMX Arena in Mexico City, Mexico now breaks down as follows:

Brandon Moreno vs. Lone’er Kavanagh

Édgar Cháirez vs. Felipe Bunes

Marlon Vera vs. David Martínez

Imanol Rodriguez vs. Kevin Borjas

Daniel Zellhuber vs. King Green

Santiago Luna vs. Angel Pacheco

Ryan Gandra vs. José Daniel Medina

Macy Chiasson vs. Ailín Pérez

Damian Pinas vs. Wesley Schultz

Cristian Quiñonez vs. Kris Moutinho

Sofia Montenegro vs. Ernesta Kareckaitė

Douglas Silva de Andrade vs. Javier Reyes

Francis Marshall vs. Erik Silva

Brandon Moreno is wasting no time getting back to work after a recent setback.

After being stopped for the first time in his career last week at UFC 323 when he was put away by Tatsuro Taira, Moreno (23-9-2) has signed on to face Asu Almabayev (23-3) in the main event of UFC Mexico City this February.

Promotion officials announced the booking on Friday. Moreno sits ranked #4 in the promotion’s 125lb weight class, Almabayev at #7.

Prior to the loss to rising Japanese star Taira, Mexico’s Moreno had notched wins over Amir Albazi and Steve Erceg. The 32-year old is a former two-time UFC flyweight champion.

Almabayev, 31, has won his last two bouts, against Jose Ochoa and former title challenger Alex Perez. The Kazakh is 6-1 inside the octagon overall since joining the company in 2023. Prior to his UFC run, Almabayev competed for the likes of Brave CF and M-1 Global.

UFC Mexico City takes place at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City, Mexico on February 28, 2026. The following fights have been reported for the Fight Night card, which will stream on Paramount+ stateside:

Brandon Moreno vs. Asu Almabayev

José Medina vs. Ryan Gandra

Imanol Rodriguez vs. Kevin Borjas

In what was the last Pay-Per-View card in the UFC’s ESPN broadcasting contract era, UFC 323 boasted a fittingly exciting night of fights.

The 14-fight card featured nine finishes with two of those finishes coming on the five-fight main card. “The Machine,” Merab Dvalishvili, stalled and came up short against Petr Yan in the main event, losing his 135lb title. And in the co-main event, an anticlimactic injury inside of thirty seconds. This resulted in Joshua Van walking away with the flyweight title over Alexandre Pantoja. Not too many fighters to match up on this edition of losers after a retirement, an early injury, and a draw.

Merab Dvalishvili

Petr Yan came with the perfect game plan Saturday, piecing up Merab Dvalishvili and denying takedown after takedown on the way to capturing the bantamweight title. Yan entered the fight ranked at #3 in the division. Merab fought tenaciously but Yan just seemed to have an answer for everything that was thrown his way.

This fight should be run back immediately. The pair first fought in 2023 with Merab earning a decision over five rounds. Merab is now 5-1 since that bout. Petr is now 4-0. A lot of fans would appreciate an immediate rematch as both fights were incredibly entertaining. Dvalishvili was attempting a historic fourth title defense in a calendar year. He was an active champion. It’s only fair to give him an automatic rematch and to make his fights with Yan a proper trilogy. This fight could headline another PPV as now the first two fights have gone the distance- and been epic.

Dvalishvili’s next fight: Petr Yan III

Alexandre Pantoja

Joshua Van become the second youngest UFC champion in promotion history after an unfortunate injury to the champ, Alexandre Pantoja, ended the pair’s bout prematurely. The fight lasted just 26 seconds before Pantoja’s untimely injury in his fifth title defense. The loss snaps an eight-fight win streak for Pantoja that began back in 2021.

Due to the nature of the injury (a nasty looking break or dislocation to the arm), Pantoja’s win streak leading up to the injury and the current landscape of the division- Alexandre, when healthy, should be offered an immediate shot at the belt. Ideally, it’s against Joshua Van but depending on the severity of Pantoja’s injury he could be sidelined for a while. And, of course, the show would continue on without him. So, whoever is holding the belt upon Pantoja’s return, should face the former champ that lost his belt due to a freak injury.

Pantoja’s next fight: UFC Flyweight Champion

Brandon Moreno

Tatsuro Taira stopped former champion Brandon Moreno in the second round of their bout on Saturday. The TKO stoppage was not without a bit of controversy as #2 ranked Moreno was still conscious and working when the fight was stopped. Taira entered the fight ranked at #5 in the division. Brandon is now 2-2 since losing his title in a split decision to Alexandre Pantoja in 2023.

Brandon’s next fight should be against Kyoji Horiguchi. Kyoji is currently ranked at #8 in the division. Kyoji is a former RIZIN and Bellator champion who had a 7-1 stint with the UFC from 2013 to 2016 (only loss was Demetrious Johnson). Since resigning with the UFC earlier this year, Horiguchi stopped Tagir Ulanbekov in the final round of their bout on November 22nd. Horiguchi is now ranked at #8 in the division and finished the #12 ranked guy. Giving Moreno a fight like this gives him plenty of respect after a controversial stoppage. It also gives Kyoji an opportunity to introduce himself to UFC fans against a former title challenger. This fight would be a great headliner for a fight night card, and the winner could be looking at a title eliminator bout.

Moreno’s next fight: Kyoji Horiguchi

Henry Cejudo

Payton Talbott butchered and battered Henry Cejudo on his way to a unanimous decision over the former UFC double champion. Cejudo entered the fight ranked at #10 in the division, while Payton was unranked. If Cejudo’s second retirement sticks he’ll end his career on a four-fight slide stemming from his 2023 split decision loss to Aljamain Sterling for the bantamweight strap.

Cejudo’s next fight: Retirement

Jan Blachowicz vs. Bogdan Guskov

The first fight on UFC 323’s main card, Jan Blachowicz vs Bogdan Guskov ended with in a majority draw. Jan entered the fight coming off an injury ranked at #5, while Bogdan was at #11. That fight should be rebooked for a rematch as it was entertaining and both fighters were very closely matched as the veteran evened the score after Guskov jumped out to an early lead.

Blachowicz/Guskov’s next fight: rematch

Japanese flyweight standout Tatsuro Taira got his toughest test to date at UFC 323, taking on former champ Brandon Moreno.

Taira was coming in off a win over Hyun-Sung Park, a short-notice fill-in after Amir Albazi withdrew from the August match-up.

Tatsuro shot in on a takedown about a minute into the fight, but in a wild scramble, it was Moreno getting in control. Albeit on his back, Moreno was able to lock up a triangle, trapping Taira. The pair were in close against the fence, and Taira, while not in immediate danger, had to be wary of Moreno tightening things up. By the final minute of the round, Taira was still in the triangle, but in no more danger, and was punching the body of Moreno. Taira would finally break free at the end of the frame, with all of 15 seconds on the clock.

Round two had the pair slowly circling at center, each man looking for a way inside. Taira would finally land a takedown, getting on top; in a scramble, Moreno nearly escaped but instead, Taira took the back. Taira had a body triangle, but let up on it, switching to hooks as Moreno went belly down. Taira began unloading some serious ground n’ pound, as Moreno covered up. Soon enough, the ref waved it off, and while Brandon Moreno protested, Tatsuro Taira had the TKO victory – becoming the first to finish Moreno!

Replay showed Moreno was still moving, trying to reposition himself, while covering up as the ref waved things off, adding some credence to his complaint about the stoppage. Still, the result will stand, and Taira now has a victory over a two-time champ in the UFC.

Tatsuro Taira returns to the big stage at UFC 323 on Saturday night, stepping out of the UFC APEX and back into a packed arena atmosphere for the first time since 2023 as he prepares to meet former flyweight champion Brandon Moreno.

“This will be my second T-Mobile experience. Very happy to be back, very excited to be fighting in front of all the fans,” Taira told reporters through a translator on Wednesday.

“As long as it’s (the octagon) is big I don’t worry too much.”

Taira (17-1) welcomes the big-stage energy that comes with a former champion across the cage. The rising flyweight says this is exactly the matchup he’s been calling for.

“After last fight I wanted a top ranked (fighter). Hearing the name Brandon Moreno it was like the perfect opponent that I wanted. I think it will be the perfect match to determine the next title contender,” said Taira.

Taira sees Saturday night as more than just another bout as it’s an opportunity to elevate himself in a division finally gaining momentum. After watching fellow Japanese star Kyoji Horiguchi deliver a statement win earlier this year, he knows the bar has been set for what Japan expects on the big stage.

“Looking at Kyoji’s fight I think he showed a great performance, obviously that’s something I have to show this Saturday as well. Make sure I finish Moreno, which he’s never been finished, give him the first finish. That’s what I have to show,” he said.

Watch the entire media day scrum with Tatsuro Taira above. He faces Brandon Moreno at UFC 323 on Saturday night.
