With a strong second half, there were a handful of cards to choose from for Event of the Year 2018, but in the end, one show stood out above the rest.

MMA 2018 was notable perhaps more so for what what it lacked rather than what it had. Through the first half of the year, there was a real deficit in major events. The big players all seemed hurt or inactive. Bellator launched its heavyweight grand prix, but spread out across a twelve-month span, there was no single event that stole the show in the first half. UFC events seemed to pass by with a yawn.

Then came the second half. The return of Conor McGregor at UFC 229. The 25th anniversary card in Denver. Bellator stormed Hawaii with back-to-back shows. ONE put on Heart of the Lion. UFC 231 in Toronto served up two entertaining title fights.

In the end, one event stood out. Care to guess which?

Event of the Year 2018

Heath Harshman: This was the hardest decision to make, without a true stand-out event taking place in 2018. There were plenty of solid cards, but nothing like a UFC 205, UFC 217, or UFC 218. But at the beginning of 2018, a few great events took place. A couple of events main evented by Jeremy Stephens were near the top of my list, UFC St. Louis and UFC Orlando. But, UFC 220 was the best event of the year. Featuring the prequel to Cormier-Miocic in the summer, with both champs defending their belts in decisive fashion, Boston’s PPV was fantastic. There’s was plenty of other stuff to enjoy, too. An awesome Fight of the Night between Calvin Kattar and Shane Burgos nearly stole the show, while Rob Font knocked out Thomas Almeida with a head-kick.

Mike Straus: Short and sweet — UFC 225.

Jay Anderson: While a lot of folks will focus on the UFC, there’s a very strong argument to be made that Bellator had the event (make that events) of the year when they headed to Hawaii in mid-December. Scott Coker’s promotion did what the UFC has failed to do: bring a major MMA show to the Hawaiian islands. Both companies have popular Hawaiian champions, but just as the UFC failed to bring Joanna Jedrzejczyk to Poland and Conor McGregor to Ireland (when he had his belts), they failed to take Max Holloway home, at least thus far. Bellator did not make the same mistake, putting Ilima-Lei Macfarlane atop Bellator 213, where she came through with the biggest win of her career against Valerie Letourneau. Beyond that, Lyoto Machida made his debut, Neiman Gracie secured a title shot against Rory MacDonald, King Mo was knocked out by Liam McGeary, and a night earlier, Michael Chandler reclaimed lightweight gold just after Frank Mir tapped to strikes against Javy Ayala.

Josh Evanoff: UFC 229 was a giant event that would end up being the largest in the sports history. Selling 2.4 million PPV’s in the process, we saw Conor McGregor’s unsuccessful return to the octagon against Khabib. Khabib dominated and although there was controversy after the fight, it only added on to making the event bigger as the news of the brawl was everywhere. There was also Dominick Reyes’s coming out party, Derrick Lewis’s comeback, and an amazing fight between Anthony Pettis and Tony Ferguson.

Jesse Gillette: UFC 229: Khabib vs. McGregor is my pick for event of the year. We were treated to Derrick Lewis’ comeback KO against Alexander Volkov, a classic between Tony Ferguson and Anthony Pettis, and also the madness that was Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor + the aftermath. Viewers were intrigued from the start of the PPV to its climax and beyond… as we also got to witness Khabib Eagle himself over the cage to stomp out Dillon Danis, while McGregor instigated a group of thugs from Dagestan and started his own drama inside the cage. We’re still feeling the effects of that one.

Eddie Law: An improbable comeback by one of MMA’s most entertaining personalities when The Black Beast came back with a massive KO win in the last seconds of the fight, two high-level lightweight former champs putting together a ridiculously bloody fight, and the main event that was completely dwarfed by the chaos that followed it. UFC 229 was the craziest event and THE event of the year.

Paarth Pande: UFC 229. Any event that has a McGregor fight on is exciting. The buildup, the fight card, and the main event everything was awesome. Starting from Lewis’s hot balls comment, to Aspen Ladd’s knockout to the crazy Pettis vs Tony fight. The undercard delivered. Plus McGregor vs Khabib was fun. Khabib effectively shut McGregor down and the post-fight brawl was even more exciting.

Farzin Vousoughian: UFC 229. It had everything. The comedy from Derrick Lewis, the brawl from Anthony Pettis and return of Tony Ferguson, and of course, the highly anticipated fight between Khabib and Conor, plus the aftermath. The UFC did not like it, but let’s be honest, it had a lot of eyes and everyone was talking about it for days.

Mike McClory: I’m going with UFC 229 but not because of Conor and Khabib. This was very entertaining card that saw finishes from the opening bout until the very end. The only real negative of this card was the melee that kicked off after Khabib and Conor’s main event, but for some that might be reason enough to watch.

Dan Doherty: UFC 229. With the most pay-per-view buys of all-time by a longshot at 2.24 million, this was likely many people’s first time watching an event, and boy did it deliver. It started with Michelle Waterson showing her skills, then we had an incredible comeback by Derrick Lewis, leading to the greatest post-fight interview of all-time. Dominick Reyes proved to be one of the top talents at 205, then there was a Fight of the Year candidate between Tony Ferguson and Anthony Pettis in the co-main event. It all culminated with a matchup years in the making between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor. Khabib wiped the floor with the Irish superstar, then all hell broke loose with a post-fight brawl. Of course, that left a black eye on things, but finally being able to see those two battle and the preceding great fights/performances make UFC 229 the event of the year.

Gabriel Gonzalez: UFC 226. Now this one was tough. 223 in Brooklyn easily had the craziest week. 229 for Khabib vs McGregor was the biggest card. BUT, on fight night the card that delivered to me was 226 with the champ vs champ fight. History, upsets, and great performances throughout. Only one blemish, and that was Ngannou vs Lewis which will live in infamy.

The end result: With no other event getting more than a single vote, UFC 229 was the Event of the Year 2018!

Patricio Pitbull and brother Patricky have no love lost for Michael Chandler, and they let it be known on Friday night after Chandler won the Bellator MMA lightweight title for the third time.

The Pitbull Brothers — that would be Patricio and Patricky Freire — have no love lost for Michael Chandler. That much is pretty well known. So when Chandler reclaimed his lightweight title at Bellator 212 on Friday night in Honolulu, Hawaii, you knew the pair would have something to say. As it turns out, both Patricio Pitbull, Bellator’s current featherweight champ, and Patricky Pitbull, a perennial lightweight contender who was previously defeated by Chandler, said lots.

Patricio, for one, went right after Chandler during the Bellator 212 main event. Chandler won a unanimous decision and did not lose a single round on any scorecard. The closest the now-three time lightweight champion came to danger was a second-round knockdown.

Pitbull, however, declared it a “sh*tty, ugly fight,” in which Chandler “lost on the feet” and was “afraid to strike with a guy that has no striking technique.”

Big brother Patricky, meanwhile, accused Chandler of steroid use. That has been a common refrain for the brothers in their ongoing feud with Chandler, though it’s worth noting that Chandler has never failed a drug test.

The Pitbull’s ire didn’t end with Chandler, however. Undefeated star A.J. McKee won his thirteenth straight fight in Bellator, improving his record to 13-0. Many see him as deserving of a chance against Patricio Pitbull for the featherwieght title. Pitbull, however, seems to disagree, suggesting McKee’s opponents have been “hand picked.”

Michael Chandler finally got his rematch against Brent Primus at Bellator 212 on Friday in Honolulu — and he came out on top despite Primus clipping him in the second.

The greatest grudge match Bellator had seen in years went down Friday at Bellator 212 (subtitled Bellator: Salute the Troops) in Honolulu, Hawaii. That came when Brent Primus met Michael Chandler for the second time. Their first meeting, in New York over a year ago, ended with Primus capturing the lightweight championship when a leg injury rendered Chandler unable to continue.

The lasting image of that bout was Chandler pretty much screaming to tear the limb off, so pressing was his desire to continue the fight. No such luck. The bout was waved off. Primus took home Chandler’s belt. And as the months passed, it seemed the pair would never meet again, much to the ire of Michael Chandler. Finally, he appeared to give up on the rematch altogether, and set his focus on money fights. Yet as Bellator graced the Hawaiian islands this week, he finally got his chance for revenge.

When the action started, Primus fired off a couple of kicks, missing, before finally finding his range and forcing Chandler to block one. Chandler backed Primus up, fired a punch, slipped, but came right back up. Primus began working low kicks in, chopping away at Chandler’s legs. Coming in, Chandler connected with a right, rocking Primus! Primus did fire back with a counter, but didn’t do nearly as much damage with the blow. Chandler went on the attack, and soon dumped the champion on his back. Chandler was in closed guard, looking to create some space as Primus tied him up, earning some recovery time. Chandler, however, found enough room to land a handful of elbows, and finished the round easily avoiding upkicks, dropping a few heavy punches on his opponent.

In the second, Primus was going to need to take a different approach. Instead, Chandler connected with a left jab early. Chandler’s ability to move quickly in and out of range was impressive, but Primus did connect with more leg kicks. One in particular saw Chanderl’s ankle roll ever so slightly. It didn’t seem to effect him any, but Chandler was then rocked by a left! Primus immediately took his back and got hooks in! He worked for the rear-naked choke, but Chandler managed to win the battle of hands and reverse position, working from guard.

After Primus was rocked in the first, and Chandler in the second, what awaited in the third? Chandler was taking some big swings right off the bell. Primus worked Chandler’s legs again. ‘Iron Mike’ then backed Primus up against the fence and shot in, taking him down. That put the fight back in Chandler’s wheelhouse. Three rounds in, Chandler was slick with sweat, making submissions a chore. Chandler stayed in control for the remainder of the round, with Primus finishing the frame on his back. While the challenger never came close to a finish, he easily won the round.

In the fourth, Primus came out in a hurry, but Chandler saw it coming. Chandler would tempt fate with his hands low, but finished a takedown within the first minute. That allowed him to once again take control. Working continually to improve position, he’d again stay on top for the remainder of the round, having only to contend with the odd elbow attempt from the bottom — none of which posed any real danger.

The fifth and final round picked up where the fourth had left off. Chandler immediately took the fight down, while Primus tried in vain to come through with a submission from the bottom. Chandler was way too slick, so while Primus had an omoplata in mind, he was never really close. The same could be said for the fight itself. Aside from the second round, Primus never really had Chandler in danger. Chandler, meanwhile, finished the fifth round with a jumping knee attempt in the mere moments Primus managed to regain his feet. And then the champ was back down. Chandler finished with a takedown right at the bell, and there was zero question as to who was the better man in Honolulu.

Now a three-time Bellator lightweight champion, Chandler said following the fight that “that was an awesome performance by Brent Primus.” Praising his opponent, it seems like the bad blood is over between the two, at least for Chandler. “He’s craftier than I thought,” he admitted.

Frank Mir was looking for his first win in Bellator MMA on Friday at Bellator 212, but Javy Ayala had other ideas.

Bounced from the World Heavyweight Grand Prix by Fedor Emelianenko, former UFC heavyweight champ Frank Mir was back in action Friday night. At Bellator 212 in Honolulu, Hawaii, Mir was looking for his first win in the promotion. Opposite him, Javy Ayala, who had fought some of the organization’s best, and who held a knockout win over Sergei Kharitonov.

As the action got underway, Ayala fired first, with Mir clamping on with overhooks but being pushed back to the fence. Mir would break free, and move back to center, looking for and eventually scoring the takedown. In half guard, he worked on softening Ayala up with punches to the body, then looked to isolate an arm. An early kimura attempt didn’t last, however, but Mir remained in the driver’s seat. As time wore on Mir would add some elbows, while Ayala punched from the bottom before scrambling free with a minute remaining. However a trip by Mir took them back down, but without enough time for Mir to make anything happen.

Javy Ayala went on the attack early in round two, but the veteran Mir quickly had him to the canvas. To Ayala’s credit, he was back on his feet in mere seconds, but he was going to need to find a way to stay there. Mir, however, was showing some damage after a close exchange. Even a high kick landed for Ayala. Mir would eat another standing elbow, then drop down looking for a single leg, however out of position, he opened himself up to some heavy punches to the ribs, and more as he worked back to his feet. Short elbows and body shots were tenderizing Mir. However off the break Mir landed a knee, then clipped Ayala with a punch! They traded a moment, before Mir changed levels for a takedown.

Ayala, however, stayed standing. Stayed on the bloodied Mir. And after eating several more shots, Mir tapped out! After the finish, it appeared Mir may have suffered some damage to the mouth, as his mouth piece had popped out earlier in the exchange.

After a couple of split decisions opened the Bellator 212 televised card on Paramount, Team Bodyshop star A.J. McKee made no mistake, finishing Daniel Crawford with an anaconda choke in the first round.

Bellator star A.J. McKee’s rise through the ranks has been nothing short of impressive. A second generation fighter (son of lower weight class pioneer Antonio McKee), A.J. has proven unstoppable through twelve fights to date. Incredibly, all twelve have come under the Bellator MMA banner. At Bellator 212 in Honolulu, Hawaii on Friday, McKee had one mission: make it lucky number thirteen.

Standing in his way, Daniel Crawford. The British featherweight entered the night off a loss in his promotional debut at Bellator 200, but there was zero question he’d be motivated to play spoiler in Hawaii against McKee.

If nothing else, the former BAMMA champ Crawford showed he was not afraid to go after McKee early. Yet before long it was McKee working on a takedown, pressing Crawford into the fence. Soon enough, he’d get it, with half the round remaining. Crawford was tight to the fence, and quickly looked for a leg lock that McKee scrambled free from. McKee then sunk in an anaconda choke, an within seconds, Daniel Crawford was tapping.

Another big win for McKee, his thirteenth, the longest winning streak in the promotion’s history. He’ll be looking for a big step up — but who will answer the call?

Perhaps the biggest surprise in Juliana Velasquez vs. Alejandra Lara at Bellator 212 came on the scorecards.

Former title challenger Alejandra Lara was back in action Friday night at Bellator 212 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Lara made a big splash against Ilima-Lei Macfarlane earlier this year, but ultimately came up short in her title bid. Now, she was looking to bounce back against the undefeated Juliana Velasquez.

No easy feat.

Velasquez held center early, with Lara on the outside, circling. It was Lara who closed the distance, looking to clinch and get the fight to the ground, but Velasquez fought that off. Lara would attack with leg kicks, but Velasquez would answer with a right hand that caught the former title challenger and forced her to shoot for a takedown. The Colombian appeared to be at a disadvantage in terms of power on the feet; getting the battle to the ground would be key. That wouldn’t come until the end of the round, however, and then only for a moment.

Round two saw Velasquez land on top off a takedown, only for Lara to scramble free. She went back to using her lateral movement along the fence, circling, only to wind up with a kick caught, and eating a solid punch from Velasquez. Lara struggled to find her range, while Juliana Velasquez seemed to connect with ease. A single leg attempt by Lara was then stuffed, with Velasquez instead pushing Lara onto her back. Working from guard, Velasquez looked to score some damage though she would eventually back out of the position, forcing Lara to get back to her feet. Velasquez’s jab was landing, and her left hook was hitting home again and again by the end of the second.

The third played out in similar fashion, with Juliana Velasquez dictating where the fight went. Lara’s only hope seemed to be a submission finish, if she could both get the fight to the ground and take control there. Yet Velasquez had controlled the action, and even on the ground, she seemed dominant. Lara would look for a heel hook in the final two minutes, holding onto the attempt out of sheer desperation. That opened her up to a number of punches to the face from Velasquez.

Ultimately, they’d go the distance — with the biggest surprise being that one judge saw it for Lara.

Sam Sicilia improved his record to 2-1 in Bellator MMA on Friday, earning himself a split decision win in a tough battle against Derek Campos at Bellator 212.

Bellator 212 kicked off a two-night stint for the Viacom-backed MMA promotion in Hawaii. Going down Friday night at the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena, the card (doubling as a Salute the Troops event) was something the island state had long desired: the return of a major MMA show to the state that brought fans Rumble on the Rock.

In featherweight action Friday, Derek Campos and Sam Sicilia threw down, with both looking to bounce back from recent losses. Sicilia was 1-1 in Bellator since moving over from the UFC, but had come up short against Marcos Galvao. Campos, for his part, had dropped his last bout to recent title challenger Emmanuel Sanchez.

Who would make it back to the winner’s circle Friday? Campos, it should be noted, was making his debut at 145lbs at Bellator 212. The pair kicked off Friday’s card, and almost immediately, Sicilia dropped Campos with a heavy punch that came off the back of a partially blocked high kick. Campos, clearly, was rocked, and remained under fire while he tried to shake off the cobwebs. Sicilia’s right hand was doing some damage, but at least for the moment, Campos was still in it. Everything, however, every single punch Sam Sicilia was throwing, came with bad intentions.

Campos would dump Sicilia after catching a kick, but by the three minute mark of the first was still puzzling out how to engage without taking serious return fire. A spinning back fist attempt would sail wide, and the pair would settle down for just a moment, the exchanges coming in shorter spurts as the round progressed. Yet Sicilia would score a second knockdown with just a minute remaining, though Campos would recover quickly.

The second round saw Campos working his jab, with Sicilia on the outside. Sam tagged Campos early, but proving his chin could take a pummeling, Campos stood firm. He’d eat a flurry, however, then find himself backed up to the fence. Sicilia was firing lefts, rights, uppercuts; Campos would survive only to take more damage moments later and find himself backed up once again. Against the fence, Campos would hook Sicilia’s leg, then look for a takedown — anything to buy time to recover. Sicilia, however, stayed on his feet, and began teeing off on Campos again. With ninety seconds to go in the round, Campos finally got the fight to the ground. Yet the biggest surprise was that Campos was still in the fight, given the shots he’d eaten to that point.

Campos went right back to the ground game in the third round, briefly taking control of the fight. Sicilia, however, would not be kept down, and on the feet he continued to have the clear edge. He’d take things down again later in the round, controlling the action from the back. Yet while he was able to score some damage, landing a number of blows on Sicilia, it felt like it was simply too late in the bout to change the outcome.

At least for two judges, it was, as Sicilia won via split decision on the scorecards.

With its Salute the Troops card, properly Bellator 212, Scott Coker’s MMA outfit brought a lightweight title fight and a surprisingly interesting event to Honolulu on Friday.

Bellator 212, a.k.a. Bellator: Salute the Troops went down Friday night as the first of back-to-back cards the promotion hosted in Honolulu, Hawaii. The main event featured arguably the biggest grudge match Bellator has put on in years. Forget Sonnen vs. Silva, the animosity between Michael Chandler and Brent Primus was absolutely palpable. Before the grudge match, however, there were some key early bouts — and you can catch all the early action on the Bellator 212 live stream right here!

Chief among them, the return of Tywan ‘Speedy’ Claxton, or ‘Air’ Claxton if you prefer. Claxton (3-0) became an overnight sensation for Bellator when he scored a flying knee knockout in his debut at Bellator 186. He’d done nothing but win since, however, and that was the plan again on Friday.

Also on the Bellator 212 preliminary card, Robson Gracie Jr. was finally making his debut, after having two opponents drop out in October. Hopefully the third time would be the charm for Gracie, who was looking to get his first MMA fight under his belt.

The Bellator 212 live stream kicks off at 8:45 PM EST, with all the prelim action followed by the main card, which will air live on DAZN and Paramount Network.

The main event of Bellator 212 is a long overdue rematch between lightweight champion Brent Primus and former champ Michael Chandler. Primus won the first fight by injury TKO after Chandler suffered an ankle injury. However, Primus has not fought since then due to a knee injury. Chandler, on the other hand, has won a pair of fights since losing the title in June 2017. Chandler was unanimously picked.

Frank Mir continues his career against Javy Ayala in the co-main event. Mir, a former UFC heavyweight champion, lost in his Bellator debut in the first round of the heavyweight grand prix to Fedor Emelianenko and has not fought since. Javy Ayala has struggled recently, losing to Cheick Kongo and Roy Nelson after going on a two-fight win streak. All but two writers picked Mir.

AJ McKee looks to continue his trek towards the featherweight title against Daniel Crawford. McKee’s entire career has been in Bellator, sporting a 12-0 record in the cage. Crawford is a British prospect with a 10-2 record, falling in his promotional debut in his last fight. McKee was picked by every writer.

Derek Campos looks to rebound against Sam Sicilia. Campos was on a four-fight win streak before falling to Patricky Pitbull in February. Sam Sicilia is 1-1 since joining Bellator after losing his final three fights in the UFC. Six of nine writers picked Campos.

Opening up the Bellator 212 main card will be Alejandra Lara vs. Juliana Velasquez. Lara is 7-2 in her MMA career, coming off a spirited contest against Ilima-Lei MacFarlane. Juliana Velasquez is an undefeated Brazilian prospect who is 2-0 since joining the promotion. Velasquez has won both of those fights by stoppage. Five of nine writers selected Velasquez.

Bellator 212 (alternately Bellator: Salute the Troops) takes place Friday, the first of back-to-back cards the promotion is putting on in Honolulu, Hawaii.
