Strawweight Ashley Yoder ended a two-year layoff at UFC Vegas 81 on Saturday, taking on ex-Invicta champ and Bellator title challenger Emily Ducote.

A pair of shoulder surgeries had kept Yoder out of action; in her return, she was looking to snap a two-fight skid. Ducote was also looking to put back-to-back losses behind her, but had at least been active.

Whatever credence you might put in the concept of ring rust, Yoder came right out with solid movement, pressing forward and getting her hands going. Ducote answered with counters, while Yoder touched the outside of her legs — though the kicks were not particularly impacting. A Ducote right hand was, and Yoder responded by grabbing for a leg, only for Ducote to pull back.

Yoder would gather her composure, and fire a high kick or two as the round progressed. Ducote worked in low kicks of her own, landing on the inside; a Yoder head kick was eaten/partially blocked by Ducote, who didn’t seem any worse for the wear. Ducote finished the round by landing a takedown, but the horn sounded soon after.

In round two, the stand-up continued, back-and-forth. Ducote caught a kick at one point and threatened to dump Yoder, but she stayed upright. The pace picked up a notch, and Docote’s right hand continued to find the mark — the most consistent significant strike of the fight. Yoder tried answering with her left hand, Ducote answered in kind, and Yoder suddenly had a bit of damage showing. Late in the round, Yoder closed the distance looking for a takedown, but couldn’t land it. An entertaining round, and still anyone’s fight heading into the third.

In the second and again the third, Yoder began to mix in knees up the middle. Both fighters went to the body at times, and Yoder began using her length well. Yoder then clinched up, firing more of those knees and smashing Ducote with an elbow off the break! Ducote’s right hand hit its mark again, but if there was a momentum shift it felt as if it was in Yoder’s direction. Yoder continued to land elbows late in the round, but Ducote’s right hand, which hand been there throughout the fight, continued to serve her well. The damage had been adding up on Yoder’s face as a result, and it really showed at the final buzzer.

With Emily Ducote taking the win on the scorecards, Ashley Yoder falls to 8-9 as a pro.

Official Result: Emily Ducote def. Ashley Yoder by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

Strawweight Ashley Yoder admits her body was broken and needed to be addressed, which is why she hasn’t fought since July of 2021. She never expected to be out of action two years however.

Yoder (8-8) had not one but two surgeries to repair a damaged shoulder, after the initial trip under the knife didn’t go according to plan.

“I was obviously in a really long layoff because of two surgeries. One of those surgeries, I believe that they didn’t address all the issues and the doctor might have made some new issues,” Yoder told The Top Turtle Podcast on Cageside Press recently. “So I had a second surgery almost back-to-back.”

“I was freaking out thinking I was going to be out four months, and two years later here we are. I guess you have to roll with the lack of punches, and it took me a long time to get back to where I wasn’t in pain and had full faith in my shoulder again.”

The good news is, the shoulder is better than ever, and Yoder returns at UFC Vegas 81 against Emily Ducote. The pair kick off Saturday’s preliminary card.

While the match-up looks like grappler versus striker at first glance, Yoder feels as if she can handle herself on the feet.

“I think we’re both really well rounded. Not just myself, I think she is as well. I think it’s going to make it a fun fight because we are well-rounded,” stated Yoder. “So it could be anywhere in the cage. It could be a stand-up fight, it could be on the ground.”

UFC Vegas 81 takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, NV on Saturday, October 14, 2023.

Kicking off this edition of TTP is our interview with UFC flyweight, Carli Judice. Judice had one of the wildest rides in history to get to the UFC. She took a fight with virtually no notice on Contender Series. She had to cut a ton of weight. Then she was in one of the craziest wars in the history of the show and walked away without a win. However, Dana White saw the potential in her despite it being just her fourth professional fight. We talked with her about the emotions at every turn, including the moment she heard the announcement that she’d be in.

Fights, Dogs, and Parlays: UFC Vegas 81 (21:47)

This weekend’s offering is headlined by a featherweight tilt between Sodiq Yusuff and Edson Barboza. The two men are looking to make that next step into the upper echelon of the division and this fight could really help. We’ll break down that fight and some of the other big action on this UFC Vegas 81 card for you. In addition, as we always do, we’ll hit you with an underdog and a parlay that we thing will make your wallet fat this weekend. For this segment, all odds via FanDuel Sportsbook.

Ashley Yoder Interview (29:45)

Closing out this edition of TTP is our interview with UFC strawweight, Ashley Yoder. Yoder talks about her long road back to the UFC and why we haven’t seen her in a minute. Now fully healed up, she preps for her UFC Vegas 81 bout with Emily Ducote. She talks about how she feels the stylistic matchup looks and why people shouldn’t just treat her as if she’s a grappler primarily. Plus, she shares a bit of her thoughts on MMA judging.

The long wait for UFC women’s strawweight Ashley Yoder to return is finally over.

Yoder (8-8) will face Emily Ducote (12-8) at a UFC Fight Night event on October 14, 2023. The fight will mark Yoder’s first action since July of 2021.

MMA Junkie was first to report news of the match-up, with Yoder confirming the booking on her Instagram Story. “It’s been a long time coming but extremely pumped to be back,” Yoder added.

Yoder told Cageside Press earlier this month at UFC X that she expected her next run to be “make or break” for her. “I think that this next run for me, it’s kind of given me a perspective of, this is my opportunity to make or break myself, and I’m really excited to make myself.”

Ashley Yoder’s last fight saw her drop a decision to former Invicta FC champ Jinh Yu Frey, the second of back-to-back losses— with the other coming against Angela Hill.

Now 35, Yoder has been with the UFC since 2016, and is 4-7 in that time.

Ducote, a former Bellator MMA title challenger and Invicta FC champ, will also be looking to snap a two-fight skid, after she suffered losses at the hands of Hill and Loopy Godinez in her last two fights.

Just one other fight has been reported for the UFC’s October 14 card. That sees Irina Alekseeva take on Melissa Dixon.

Las Vegas, NV — It’s been nearly two years since we’ve seen UFC strawweight Ashley Yoder in the cage — but with luck, that’s about to change.

“I’ve been trying to get on all my people this week, especially talking to Mick [Maynard, UFC matchmaker], trying to get a fight set up,” Yoder told Cageside Press in an exclusive interview at this year’s UFC X, part of International Fight Week. “Obviously I’ve been out for a little bit over a year, almost two years. I had two shoulder surgeries. 100% I’m back into it, I’ve been training 100%, I’m ready to get signed on to a fight. It’s just, I think for the matchmakers, getting that right fight for me coming back.”

Yoder, who last fought against Jinh Yu Frey in July of 2021, is clearly eager to get going again, and wants to put on a show.

“Super excited to come back, I’ve had a lot of love,” she said. “A lot of people who were coming up to us yesterday at the meet and greets were very excited for me to come back. I’m very much a fan performer, so I’m very excited to perform for everybody.”

Even a short-notice fight would be something Yoder is game for. What she would like, however, is to compete in front of a crowd.

“I fought four times in the APEX and I feel like I did my time without a crowd. And everyone knows, everyone’s very big in saying that we want a crowd fight. I get energy from a crowd, I do my best work in front of a crowd.”

“So I just hope, no matter where it is, it could be overseas, I want to fight in front of a crowd,” Yoder continued. “So I will take next month. I’ve been training religiously, I feel comfortable with my recovery, and I’m ready to get in and shine.”

In the time since Yoder last fought, the UFC women’s strawweight title has changed hands a couple of times. Yoder believes that change is good for the weight class overall.

“I think the 115 division, since we started the division, everybody’s looking at that division for female fights. Which, I’m grateful, because it’s such a small weight class, a lot of people don’t give attention to the smaller weights. But these girls are coming out with knockout power, you’re coming with girls that are super-well rounded,” she stated. “I think change in the division, in any division, keeps eyeballs on that division. I’m really excited to be a part of it, and I think that this next run for me, it’s kind of given me a perspective of, this is my opportunity to make or break myself, and I’m really excited to make myself.”

A strawweight bout between Ashley Yoder and Vanessa Demopoulos is set for the first UFC event of 2022 on January 15. MMA DNA was first to report the news of the fight and that Yoder had signed a new contract, while Demopoulos later confirmed the fight was official on social media.

News of Yoder (8-8) signing a new deal comes somewhat unexpectedly considering that the Team Quest veteran is 1-4 in her past five UFC bouts and is coming off a two fight skid. “Spider Monkey” has been part of the UFC since 2016 and has fought the likes of Mackenzie Dern, Angela Hill, and former Invicta FC atomweight champion Jing You Frey.

Demopoulos (6-4) is coming off a loss in her UFC debut in which she moved up to flyweight on short notice to take on JJ Aldrich in August. A former LFA champion and Dana White’s Contender Series veteran, Demopoulos has fought Sam Hughes, Lupita Goodinez, Cheyanne Buys, and Katlyn Chookagian across her professional and amateur career.

A featherweight bout between surging contender Giga Chikadze and Calvin Kattar is being targeted as the headliner for the event, but has not been officially announced. No location for the card has been announced either. Throughout 2021, all Fight Night events were held at the Apex in Las Vegas.

After picking up her first win inside the octagon last time out, former Invicta FC champ Jihn Yu Frey was looking to make it two in a row at UFC Vegas 33 on Saturday night. Opposite the former atomweight champ, Ashley Yoder, who at 1-3 in her last four, and coming off a loss to Angela Hill, would no doubt be extra motivated to get the job done.

Yoder took the fight to her comfort zone early, backing Frey against the fence. Frey would not stay there long, however, and got her hands going back at center. The pair traded low kicks; Frey later caught a kick to the body and dumped Yoder on her back. Yoder, however, was almost immediately back up. With two minutes remaining, Yoder closed the distance and drove Frey into the fence. Yoder’s height and reach also gave her an edge in the striking.

Early in the second, Frey hurt Yoder with a punch. Yoder answered back, but it was Frey turning it up, and taking over on the feet. Yoder looked to change levels, but couldn’t secure a takedown. Yoder was showing damage to the eye, and Frey seemed to have found her timing, hitting home with her jab and low kicks — but with a minute remaining, a Yoder counter rocked Frey. A jab/cross landed for Yoder; Frey pushed back but was showing damage from that assault.

The scorecards after two rounds were likely to lean one of two ways: either 20-18 Frey, or 19-19. Either way, Ashley Yoder needed a big round in the third. Possibly a finish. The pair traded at distance throughout the first half of the round, Frey leading the dance more often than not. Time soon became a factor for Yoder, as by the 90 second mark, she was behind on the feet, and had yet to land a takedown despite multiple attempts. It was Frey, meanwhile, landing flush late in the round, with Yoder retreating. They traded to the buzzer

Official Result: Jinh Yu Frey def. Ashley Yoder by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Angela Hill picked up a dominant decision win over Ashley Yoder at UFC Vegas 21.

After being paired up just a few weeks ago only to have their fight pushed back at the 11th hour, Angela Hill and Ashley Yoder finally got their rematch at UFC Vegas 21. The preliminary card bout Saturday night was the last stop on the bottom half of the event, and saw the pair meeting for the second time, after first facing off in 2017.

That night, Hill had walked away with a unanimous decision win. The rematch would potentially show who had developed more as a fighter — but after making the strawweight limit twice in a matter of weeks, both athletes deserved some credit in this one.

Hill started off fast in round one and didn’t allow Yoder any chance to get started. Hill was the more active fighter, trying to get into the clinch while also trying to find her range to land the right hand. Hill struggled to get the takedown but Yoder was on the defense for most of the round and couldn’t get anything going. Hill finally did find the right hand near the end of the round, however. Stunning Yoder with three straight rights, Hill ended the round with a takedown and finished on top.

Hill continued her dominance into round two, continuing to find a home for the right hand and putting Yoder back on the defense and on the backfoot. Yoder struggled to find a home for any sort of effective offense, as Hill utilized great head movement to avoid most of Yoder’s strikes. Hill hurt Yoder near the end of the round with a knee to the body, and a huge flurry. However, while Hill was going for the finish, Yoder was able to latch onto a takedown in order to survive and make her way to round three.

Yoder tried to open with lots of offense to start the third round, throwing a combination and trying to get into the clinch. Hill quickly reversed position in the clinch however and landed a huge flurry of knees that seemed to hurt Yoder. Once again, however, Yoder got an important takedown and wound up in half-guard. Hill eventually got back to her feet, and landed another brutal knee, and would soon end the fight on the feet, securing her victory.

Ashley Yoder has spent a great deal of her professional career on the biggest stage of them all. Having been a pro for less than two years, she made it onto the Ultimate Fighter and was soon fighting the likes of Mackenzie Dern and Angela Hill in the UFC. While her record might not be as spotless as some other fighters in her division, over half of her professional fights have come on the biggest stage of them all.

Despite the difficult road that she has faced, Yoder isn’t one to dwell on those past fights. She’s never been one to want to smooth out those bumps in the road with rematches.

“There’s people rallying for rematches harder than I ever have. I’ve never really thought about getting those rematches,” Yoder said. “I just kind of brushed off whatever happened, and focused on the new task at hand.”

Of course, this seems like an odd statement being as she is now booked in the first rematch of her career. This weekend she faces off with Angela Hill in what will be the second go-round of their 2017 match-up (the first of which was won by Hill via decision). However, Yoder points out that she is not necessarily against rematches – because at the end of the day, she’ll do what the UFC wants.

“I’m not opposed to any rematch that [the UFC] would ever give me. I’m always game to fight,” she said. “If they want me to fight the same person five times, I’ll fight the same person five times.”

And while she’s never been in search of a rematch, now that it is on the horizon, she enjoys a lot of the preparation that goes into fighting someone that she’s already seen before.

“It’s kind of a cool feeling because this is all new for me – to be able to step back in against someone I’ve already felt their power, I’ve already felt those kinds of things,” she said. “It’s a bit of mental imagery of being able to be there already and know that there’s only so many things that we’ve changed since our first fight.”

Yoder, as well as Hill, has progressed significantly from their first bout. That too excites Yoder when she thinks about the match-up. Although some things do change, she feels that some things will be the same.

“Our styles are our styles – it’s kind of who we are,” she stated. “I’ve felt really good about the growth on both sides.”

You can catch the rematch this weekend as part of the UFC Vegas 21 main card on ESPN+.
