The first of a half-dozen fighters making their octagon debuts at UFC 312 on Saturday was Quillan Salkilld, taking on India’s Anshul Jubli in the opening fight of the event in Sydney, Australia.

Jubli had won the Road to UFC lightweight tournament in 2023, while Salkilld arrived in the promotion via Dana White’s Contender Series last year.

Salkilld was also given a spot on this week’s UFC 312 media day, perhaps showing the faith the promotion had in the newcomer. And as it turned out, that faith was not missplaced.

The fight started with Salkilld getting busy with the leg kicks, going to the inside and out. He was using his jab as a diversion and BAM! A huge right-hand folded Jubli, dropping him like a brick for the clean knockout.

Jubli would protest, and could be seen shaking his head as the result was announced, but the outcome was set.

“Dream come true. Only thing that would make it better is an extra $50,000 in the bank for the one-punch knockout,” Salkilld said during his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier. The finish, taking all of 19 seconds, was announed as the second-fastest debut in UFC lightweight history. Not a bad start at all for Quillan Salkilld, who improved to 8-1 with the win.

Official Result: Quillan Salkilld def. Anshul Jubli by knockout (right hand), round 1, 0:19

Road to UFC tournament winner Anshul Jubli fought for the first time after winning his UFC contract earlier this year, taking on Mike Breeden in Abu Dhabi at UFC 294.

Breeden got what appeared to be one last chance to make his way in the UFC, and with his back against the wall, sporting an 0-3 UFC record, he came back from behind to win in spectacular fashion. Jubli lost his undefeated record here and will have to do some improving to get back on top and blaze the trail for Indian MMA in the coming future.

Breeden and Jubli danced in the center and traded low kicks to start round one. It began as a well-matched striking bout; both men had their lands early but nothing fight-changing. Jubli began to slowly strengthen as Breeden increasingly found himself backing up and out of range when he tried to land himself. Mike attempted a takedown with two minutes left but it was stuffed, though he landed a knee on the break. Jubli’s boxing was fluid and he, too, landed some good knees in close and missed some that were inches away from a highlight reel knockout. Anshul coasted for much of the last minute before halfway knocking Breeden’s mouthpiece out in the final second of the round to seemingly win the first period, 10-9.

Jubli came out and attempted an immediate single leg to start round two but Breeden limp-legged out. Right after that he caught Mike with a right hand that sent the American reeling backwards while shelling up. Anshul came forward with an onslaught but Breeden survived the initial blows and somewhat recovered. Still, he was put on the back foot and the cut on his eyebrow that he entered the fight with was re-opened.

Jubli landed some big right hands after that too, but they did not affect Breeden like the one to start the round. Mike had some good shots of his own too as Jubli’s tall-man defense was porous, but none of them fazed the Indian. However, Jubli did begin to slow his pace and look somewhat tired; he was also forced onto the back foot for the last two minutes of the round as Breeden began to look like the stronger fighter despite likely being down two rounds to none even after his success late in the round.

The final round began with a good knee from Jubli but Breeden was the ascendant fighter, pressing forward with reckless abandon. Mike began to taunt as he walked forwards with his hands down, barking like a dog at times. Jubli mostly shelled up behind his high guard and used lateral movement to avoid exchanges. Breeden had trouble cornering Anshul when Jubli moved, but when he stood still Breeden came forward and landed good shots. Jubli had some good counters, but his volume was so low that Breeden had an easy time cruising in the round, despite having trouble putting many strikes together in quick succession. Still, he was able to get the finish when a right hand crashed through the guard of Jubli and sent him to his knees. He reached out for a single leg but Mark Goddard had seen enough and stepped in to stop the fight, giving Mike Breeden his first win in the UFC.

Official Result: Mike Breeden def. Anshul Jubli by TKO (punches), Round 3, 3:00

The pair engaged in an explosive face-off at Friday’s weigh-ins, one that included a throat-slash gesture and plenty of pushing and shoving. Saturday night’s final would afford them the opportunity to settle their differences, and land the winner a UFC contract.

Saragih opened the fight with a couple of heavy leg kicks to the inside and outside lead leg. He called Jubli in and Jubli landed a good combo into a single-leg takedown. Saragih was trying to frame off and just try to power his way out from underneath. Jubli wasn’t landing anything significant but was busy enough. Jubli eventually threw the legs to the side and mounted Saragih. Jubli went to an arm triangle. It looked tight but Saragih escaped and got to his feet. The round ended with both guys swinging.

In round two Saragih came out firing but Jubli used that to get the quick single-leg takedown. Saragih was working back to his feet but had Jubli take his back. He flattened out Saragih and started to land some good ground and pound. Saragih took some heavy elbows but survived. Jubli was going between the mount and the back but doing a ton of damage. After continued ground and pound the ref eventually stepped in.

The win gives Anshul Jubli the Road to UFC crown at lightweight, a UFC contract, and makes him the second fighter from India to sign with the promotion (though former UFC heavyweight and current ONE heavyweight champ Arjan Singh Bhullar of Canada is also of Indian descent).

Prediction: Young is probably my favorite prospect in this entire tournament. While Kai did impress me in his last fight this is a massive step up from Angaa Hans.

Outside of maybe Kai landing something big on Young I can’t see him winning. On the feet outside of that power, Young is on a much higher level. Young also has power but is more technical, a better kickboxer, and a dangerous counter striker. He could very well make Kai pay for throwing single strikes or lazy kicks.

Young did get taken down easy his last fight so Kai has a chance to do the same. I don’t rate the grappling of Kai high at all and at least Young is pretty skilled everywhere. I’ve got Young in this and I’m pretty sure he ends this fight at some point.

The quarterfinal round of the Road to UFC tournament in Singapore continued on Friday, with Road to UFC 3 the first of back-to-back events at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

While that same venue would play host to UFC 275 on Saturday, it was a group of prospects and UFC hopefuls that were in action Friday, competing across four weight classes — flyweight, bantamweight, featherweight, and lightweight — with the hope of securing a UFC deal.

As with episode two of the Road to UFC series, the third installment offered an abbreviated four-fight card after one athlete failed to make weight for the event. Following weigh-ins, which saw Sho Patrick Usami struggle, the lightweight was removed from the card.

UFC officials later released a brief statement announcing that opponent Anshul Jubli would therefore move on in the tournament, despite not having to compete in the quarterfinal round.

“Due to issues with weight management, Sho Patrick Usami has been removed from his lightweight bout against Anshul Jubli. As Jubli made weight (155.5), he will proceed to the next round of the Road to the UFC tournament.”

In addition to the tournament bouts, one non-tournament fight in the women’s strawweight division was included. That fight saw YeDam Seo face off with Josefine Knutsson.

Full results from the Road to UFC 3 card can be found below. The event kicks off at 2:30AM ET, streaming live on UFC Fight Pass.
