Two title fights adorn Saturday’s KSW 117, and they are, figuratively and literally, big ones.

In the night’s co-main event, long-time KSW heavyweight champion Phil de Fries was back in action, this time taking on Marcin Wójcik. A former FEN champ, Wójcik had won two straight including a bout over former ranked UFC and Bellator heavyweight Augusto Sakai.

De Fries, however, was almost certainly the most formidable heavyweight outside the UFC beyond Francis Ngannou. De Fries was looking to make the fourteenth defense of his KSW title, an unthinkable number.

De Fries wasn’t the only major star in action on Saturday at KSW 117 however. Mamed Khalidov was back looking to reclaim his old middleweight title, which he had held twice previously. That main event fight saw champ Paweł Pawlak looking to fend off the longtime KSW star.

It was almost a shock when Parnasse had opted to re-sign with KSW, rather than jump to the UFC as a high-profile free again.

Interim featherweight gold was on the line at Saturday’s KSW 112 in Szczecin, Poland.

Coming offf a big card last month that saw heavyweight champ Phil De Fries make yet another defense of his title (his thirteenth overall, an absolutely mind-boggling number), KSW 112 was smaller affair, though it did feature Marcin Held, the former Bellator Season 10 tournament winner, PFL and UFC competitor. Held was looking for his third straight win under the KSW banner when he took on Marian Ziolkowski, the promotion’s former lightweight champ.

In the main event, meanwhile, Patryk Kaczmarczyk and Adam Soldaev faced off for an interim title at 145lbs. With Salahdine Parnasse having won lightweight gold and then jumping to boxing back in October, the featherweight division was very much on hold, with one of Kaczmarczyk and Soldaev essentially fighting to be next in line.

With Francis Ngannou barely fighting (least of all in MMA, with just one fight and one victory since exiting the UFC), it’s hard to imagine a better heavyweight outside the UFC than Phil De Fries right now.

A former UFC talent himself, England’s De Fries went 2-3 inside the octagon, and had a few troubles after hitting the regional scene. Having conquered personal demons and turned his career around, however, he has not lost since 2017, compiling a 15-fight win streak that includes victories over UFC veterans Todd Duffee, Darko Stosic, and Augusto Sakai among others.

He’s now made 11 successful title defenses of his KSW heavyweight strap, an impressive feat regardless of promotion. At KSW 111, he’ll look to make it an even dozen when he takes on Stefan Vojcak, who has won three fights (including one of Stosic) to make it to a title shot.

The light heavyweight title will also be on the line when the Polish promotion heads into the Czech Republic on Saturday.

Opposite De Fries on Saturday was Arkadiusz Wrzosek, a former kickboxer under the GLORY banner who had kicked off his MMA career a perfect 6-0. Five of Wrzosek’s six wins in MMA had come via finish, and despite his striking pedigree, there was actually a submission victory among them.
