Danaa Batgerel picks up first UFC victory with first-round knock out of Guido Cannetti.

UFC 248 went down in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday night — and was kicked off by bantamweight action on the early preliminary card. That bout featured Argentina’s Guido Cannetti looking to bounce back from a loss against Marlon Vera in 2018. In his first trip to the octagon in over a year, Cannetti would be facing Mongolian Danaa Batgerel. A veteran of Legend FC and MGL, Batgerel was in search of his first win inside the octagon.

Here is how the action went down

Round 1:

Cannetti came out in the southpaw stance and immediately tripped Batgerel with a low kick. The Mongolian fighter popped back to his feet and started to fire off punches of his own. Both men bit down on their mouthpieces and fired off some hard haymakers. When Cannetti threw an inside leg kick, the Asian fighter timed a crushing right hand that snapped his adversary’s head back. Canetti circled the perimeter of the cage while Batgerel pressed forward. The fighter from Argentina kept attacking with leg kicks but was getting picked apart with hard punches. Cannetti lunged in to throw a punch and was suddenly crushed with a perfectly timed left hook that sent Cannetti crashing to the canvas. Storm followed up with a few ground strikes until the referee pulled him off Cannetti, giving him a first-round TKO victory.

The win improved Batgerel’s professional record to 8-2 and 1-1 in the UFC. The Mongolian fighter was on the wrong side of a unanimous decision to Heili Alateng at UFC Shenzhen back in August 2019. Cannetti’s professional record fell to 8-5 and 2-4 in the UFC. This was his first fight in 17-months. He has now lost back to back fights.

Megan Anderson gets her second straight first-round stoppage with knockout of Norma Dumont at UFC Norfolk.

The first of two women’s featherweight fights at UFC Norfolk featured former Invicta FC 145lb champ Megan Anderson looking for her second straight win. And doing so under a spotlight. While she refused to look past opponent Norma Dumont, it was pretty widely known that Amanda Nunes had her eye on the card. She was looking to potentially defend her featherweight title later in the year — and Anderson was a candidate.

Dumont, meanwhile, was an undefeated 4-0 coming into the fight. However, she had not competed since 2018, had previously fought at bantamweight, and was giving up a whole heck of a lot in terms of height and reach to her towering Australian opponent.

Round 1

Anderson started the action with a sharp left hook while dodging some wild haymakers from her adversary. She popped the debuting fighter with some crisp jabs before the Brazilian was able to close the distance. Dumont was able to grab double underhooks and pressed the Australian against the cage. She peppered the longer fighter’s legs with some short knees but struggled to get the takedown due to Anderson using her long arms to frame against her face. The former Invicta FC champion briefly got off the cage but the UFC newcomer was able to reverse the position once again and worked the body some more with knees. The Brazilian was briefly able to get Anderson down but the Glory MMA team member was able to quickly scramble back to her feet and broke away from Dumont.

Almost immediately after they were back in the center of the Octagon, Anderson sent Dumont crashing to the canvas with a perfectly timed straight right hand. Before the Australian could follow up with some ground strikes the referee jumped in and stopped the contest. Dumont wasn’t unconscious but she had a very dazed look on her face and didn’t appear to have all her faculties.

Struggling heavyweight, Marcin Tybura was able to get back in the win column with a decision win over Sergey Spivak.

Heavyweight action at UFC Norfolk saw Marcin Tybura, a highly touted talent when he entered the UFC, with his back to the wall. Tybura had lost his last two bouts. Worse, he’d dropped four of his last five. His lone win in that span, dating back to 2017, was a decision against Stefan Struve. On Saturday at the Chartway Arena in Norfolk, Tybura looked to turn things around against Sergey Spivak. 1-1 in the promotion to date, ‘The Polar Bear’ was looking for his second straight win.

Here is how the action went down

Round 1:

Tybura took the center of the cage and started to pump out his jab to attempt to find his range. Spivak started the action by crashing the pocket and snapping the Polish fighters head back with a big right hand. He backed Tybura up with a few jabs but was suddenly taken down with a perfectly timed double-leg.

Tybura sat inside Spivak’s closed guard and started to work with punches and elbows. The Moldovan fighter tried to pull Tybura in tight while hoping to get stood up by the referee, but Tybura was able to posture off and batter him with hard punches and elbow fists for the remainder of the round.

Cageside Press scored the round 10-9 for Tybura.

Round 2:

Spivak came out aggressive in the second round by firing off big haymakers and knees. Tybura looked for the takedown and was in deep but was unable to take Spivak down. The Polish fighter was able to muscle Spivak to the cage and began to work for the clinch. He dropped down on his adversary’s hips several times but was unable to get him down before the referee separated them. Once separated Tybura backed Spivak up with punches, until he landed on top when Spivak missed a judo throw. In a scramble, Tybura was able to lock in his hooks and pepper Spivak with small punches to the side of the head until the round expired.

Cageside Press scored the round 10-9 for Tybura.

Round 3:

Once again, Spivak came out firing hard shots to open the round but was backed against the cage by Tybura. The Polish fighter couldn’t take him down and Spivak was able to find separation and get off the fence. Back in the center, Spivak began to find his jab and stuff some takedown attempts from the Polish fighter. With two minutes left in the contest, Tybura was finally able to take Tybura down and finished the rest of the round on top landing punches and elbows.

Cageside Press scored the round 10-9 and the fight 30-27 for Tybura.

Official Results: Marcin Tybura def. Sergey Spivak by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Bellator continues to spread expand its talent pool with another signing of a top European talent on Friday. A Bellator representative has confirmed with Cageside Press that they have signed the highly touted Russian bantamweight, Nikita Mikhailov, to a long-term contract.

They did not disclose at the time the details of the contract nor when he is expected to make his debut with the promotion.

Despite being only 21-years-old, the European fighter is viewed as someone well ahead of his years. He is a former Russian Wushu-Sanda Cup champion.

Since turning professional back in 2015, Mikhailov has amassed an impressive 8-1 record. The lone blemish on his career came back in July 2017 when he was submitted via triangle choke by Alexander Podlesniy. Since the defeat, the Fights Night Global veteran has rattled off three straight victories.

Mikhailov last competed back in April of last year when he defeated the previously undefeated and also highly regard Russian prospect Mukhamed Eminov by majority decision. Mikhailov was set to return to action twice since his last appearance but had to be removed from the scheduled bouts due to a string of injuries.

The young fighter trains out of the legendary Alexander Nevsky Club (Stary Osskol) which former Pride Fighting Championship heavyweight champion, Fedor Emelianenko, trains out of. Vadim Nemkov – who battles Ryan Bader for the Bellator light heavyweight championship on May 9 — his brother Viktor Nemkov, Anatoly Tokov, Valentin Moldavsky, and Kirill Sidelnikov are some also notable fighters that call Alexander Nevsky Club their home.

Mikhailov is expected to compete in the bantamweight division which is in a bit of a standstill. The promotion currently doesn’t have a titleholder with the previous champion, Kyoji Horiguchi, vacating the belt after suffering an injury that is expected to sideline him for an extended length of time.

LFA standout Jake Childers is looking for big fights but isn’t focusing on a UFC call-up.

This past Friday at LFA 82, Alex Polizzi captured the vacant light heavyweight title when he submitted Jamal Pogues in the fourth round. While Polizzi might have gone home with some new hardware, it was another fighter that stole the night. In the co-main event of the evening, Jake Childers sent the fans that were in attendance at the Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake, Minnesota into a frenzy when he slammed Nate Richardson, who went unconscious on impact, to the canvas. The highlight-reel knockout was a huge hit with the fans and video of it spread fast throughout social media.

While the win was the biggest of Childers’ career, it wasn’t without some controversy. When the Illinois native lifted Richardson in the air and sent him crashing to the canvas, the former Glory Kickboxer tried to brace his fall by planting his elbow into the ground. The move kept Richardson’s upper body from crashing into the canvas and forced his head to be crushed between Richardson’s own shoulder and Childers’ head.

“After watching over and over, I agree with Pat [Miletich],” Childers told Cageside Press. “Somehow he landed on his arm in a weird way and just jolted in a crazy way. I kinda said something stupid in the interview which my coaches said I shouldn’t have done. My coaches said I should never have said I headbutted someone even if it was on accident. It was an accident. I was like why shouldn’t I say that. After that fight, the referee told me that they [the Minnesota State Boxing Commission] was already reviewing it and they were thinking about taking it away from me.”

A headbutt is an illegal move in MMA, but it didn’t appear that the Central Illinois Combat Club team member intentionally struck Richardson with his head and that it was a simple byproduct of following his adversary to the mat while he was slamming him.

“I truthfully don’t care [if they overturn it],” Childers said. “Everybody has seen it. I don’t care. My biggest opinion is if they want to overturn this right now, they have a lot of overturning to do. This is like wow, you want to overturn this but there is some stuff in MMA that you are going to just say ‘oh no we are not going to do that but we are going to pay attention to this right here.’ You people are a little ridiculous. To me it is over, everyone has seen it. What happened had happened. You can’t overturn that.”

The win improved Childers’s record to a perfect 8-0 since turning professional. Prior to going pro, the fighter who is nicknamed “the Working Man” had an extensive amateur career which he said is close to 30 fights in total and included him winning three different amateur titles.

“To me, I thought it was very smart to kinda go out there and just see what I was made of before I actually go pro,” Childers said. “I didn’t know exactly how everything would work out before I actually made the jump to pros and wanting to compete with those guys.”

If the victory stands, the 31-year-old would be a perfect 3-0 inside the LFA and would be on a shortlist of fighters that could be considered to battle for the vacant featherweight title. Despite the string of success, Childers isn’t interested in calling for his next opponent.

“Line them up, I don’t give a sh*t,” Childers stated. “I will know your name when they tell me I am going to compete against you… I don’t care. Until I sign that contract against you, you are not important to me.”

The LFA has been the leading promotion to help propel fighters into the UFC, and Childers appears to be on the same trajectory as others before him. Despite likely being on the cusp of a call-up to the UFC, Childers isn’t too concerned with it.

“I have confidence in myself, I know I can beat anybody,” Childers said. “I have always felt that way. I am just taking fights as they come. I hope I am right there. I have always dreamed of being there, to be honest. At the same time, I don’t give a shit. I just want big fights, I want to get paid and I just want to keep going.”

Undefeated light heavyweight Alex Polizzi gets the biggest test of his career against Jamal Pogues at LFA 82.

When former Dana White’s Contender Series alumni Julius Anglickas left the Legacy Fighting Alliance (LFA) to join the Bellator roster, he vacated the organization’s light heavyweight title. The promotion will finally crown a new champion on Friday night at the Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake, Minnesota when Jamal Pogues battles Alex Polizzi for the coveted strap in the evening’s main event.

Pogues enters the cage as the more recognizable name of the two after having a successful stint on the 2019 season of Dana White’s Contender Series. The Cobra Kai team member picked up a decision win over Marcos Brigagao on the show. Despite the victory, UFC President Dana White told him that he would like to see him polish up his skills on the regional scene before being promoted to the world’s premier MMA organization. Polizzi, on the other hand, is excited about being the lesser-known combatant.

“I try not to think about the opponent’s history,” Polizzi told Cageside Press ahead of the fight. “If they are big and bad. I am just trying to focus on the fight ahead of me and make sure I am not getting too much into my own head. This is a great fight and another chance for me to show my skills in the ring… It is really nice to have people cheering on you [like Pogues] and to know your name and say, ‘I’m going to cheer for this guy.’ But it is something else to be the opponent, to be the guy that shouldn’t have won, to be the guy everyone wants to cheer against. I’m actually kinda excited about that.”

Polizzi should not be looked past. He is a former Wisconsin state champion wrestler and former Division I NCAA wrestling wrestler at Northwestern — who qualified for the National tournament three times. Since transitioning to MMA, “Eazy” has amassed a perfect 5-0 record without a single fight reaching the judge’s scorecard. In his last appearance, he made quick work of UFC veteran Daniel Jolly with a first-round TKO. Regardless of the success, the Chosen Few Gym representative won’t spend any time relishing it.

“It’s nice for the day,” Polizzi said. “It’s a nice indicator of how far I have come as a fighter. However at the end of the day if you are worried about being undefeated and keeping my perfect record it leads to nervousness. It is no good. I like to think about every fight as starting fresh. Coming 0-0 at him with nothing to lose.”

Despite top UFC talents like Henry Cejudo, Kamaru Usman, Dominick Reyes and many others having a history with the LFA (some fought for the promotion when it was still called Legacy Fighting Championship), and the promotion virtually acting as a feeder system for the UFC, Polizzi won’t even take a minute to think about anything after his battle with Pogues.

While the Wisconsin native won’t look past Pogues he did give his official prediction when they meet.

“It’s going to be a stoppage if history told us anything,” Polizzi said. “Putting it on the judges just ain’t my thing. They can decide the rest of the fights. I am going to try to make the fight stop. I am going to drag him into the deep water, I’m going to wear on him. I’m going to put him down on the ground and beat on him. The ref will probably pull me off of him, let’s say round three.

Highly decorated kickboxer Gabriel Varga steps into the world of MMA for the second time at Bellator 239.

It isn’t often that a world champion in combat sports is relegated to the prelims of an event, but that is what is happening this Friday at Bellator 239 inside the WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma. Gabriel Varga isn’t just a world champion, he is a six-time kickboxing world champion. The Canadian, who recently turned to MMA, will be stepping inside the Bellator cage for a second time when he squares off with TeeJay Britton.

Varga, who is the reigning Bellator kickboxing featherweight champion stated that he turned to MMA when he was unable to find a suitable opponent for kickboxing. The 34-year-old, who has competed in both K-1 and Glory kickboxing made his debut in MMA last July at Bellator 224 when he defeated Jamese Taylor III via second-round TKO.

“My first fight was hard for my wife,” Varga told Cageside Press. “She has been dating me since I was pretty far into my kickboxing career. When it comes to nerves, she has never seen me freak out. I got pretty nervous and grumpy and I shut down when I get nervous and she had to experience that. I went through the same thing again about a month ago. I was like ‘oh shoot I’m doing this again. It is scary and new.’ Kickboxing I can just jump right in with anybody. I am so confident in my defense and I am so confident in different aspects. I get nervous of course but I am not scared. These ones scare me. I would like that to go away but I am going to have to deal with it. It is a reality. It is different sports and everything changes.”

Credit: Bellator MMA/Lucas Noonan

Varga, who has been training with ONE Championship bantamweight champion Bibiano Fernandes for this fight, stated that he has been working intensely on his wrestling and submission game but pointed out that he also had to make changes to transition from kickboxing striking to MMA striking.

“Striking for my side is somewhat beneficial. In my last fight, I was able to land body shots quiet well. The same in sparring, the body is much more open and it is much more damaging to hit somebody with those four-ounce gloves. The fact that I am the striker, I should be able to take advantage of having four-ounce gloves on. The defense is entirely different though. Normally my defense game is to keep my hands at my head, a little bit of movement by lifting the elbows up to get the forearms to block it. I can’t do that now. So it if different. It is not as scary as being brought down though.”

Varga’s opponent, Britton is a 37-year-old professional, who flaunts a 5-2 record. The Joplin, Missouri native has recently competed in the LFA.

“I know everything I can about him that is available online,” Varga said. “I know he is exceptionally tall, especially for this weight class. I think he is 6’4″. He has a bit more of a ground game than the last guy. We have been working a lot of stuff on the ground. My jiu-jitsu coach likes to look at all the videos and work off things he has done in the past. And obviously we are looking for all the holes.”

Varga predicted that he would get the win on Friday but isn’t predicting what the future holds. He stated that he will continue to compete in kickboxing but isn’t completely settled on MMA yet.

“I am always honest about things,” Varga said. “I don’t know how this MMA thing is going to play out. I come to win, I train super hard. I expect to win every fight but to say I am going to be super successful in MMA, I don’t even know if that is a reality… All I can do is keep training and do my best.”

After a 14-month layoff, Bellator heavyweight Javy Ayala is ready to pick up where he left off when he faces Valentin Moldavsky at Bellator 239.

When heavyweight Javy Ayala steps back in the cage on Friday night to face off against Valentin Moldavsky on the main card of Bellator 239, he will end the longest layoff of his career – a 14-month absence from the sport. “Eye Candy” was last seen in action when he picked up the biggest win of his career by defeating former UFC heavyweight champion, Frank Mir back at Bellator 212 in December 2018.

“It means a lot to beat Frank Mir,” Ayala told Cageside Press. “It feels really good to be able to go in there and get a win over somebody that I idolized early off in my career. If people were to ask me my favorite fighter, I would have said Frank Mir. He kinda represents everything I want to be in the sport. I wanted to be good on the ground and good standing up, just a good well-rounded fighter. I feel like if I got right back in after the win, I would have got a lot more media attention.”

The 31-year-old was slated twice to square off with former Bellator heavyweight champion, Vitaly Minakov in 2019 but the battle fell through both times. They were originally going to meet at Bellator 225 back in August but Ayala was pulled from the contest by the state commission due to illness just hours before the planned matchup. They were rescheduled to face off at Bellator 232 but this time Minakov was the one pulled from the event due to travel VISA issues.

It appears the California native has moved past a bout with Minakov and now has to deal with another Russian standout, the aforementioned Moldavsky. Ayala’s 28-year-old adversary is a former Combat Sambo World Champion with an 8-1 professional record.

“I think it is a good matchup,” Ayala said. “I feel as he is a real strong tough guy. He is a gamer, he likes to fight. I feel like my style matches up good with his style and it is going to make it a really good fight. I feel like I have the advantage with my striking. I know he is a close-quarters kinda guy. From the fights I have watched, he likes stay in tie-ups. That is something I feel like I am best at. I will be able to use a lot of my elbows, short strikes like I did against Frank Mir.”

The California native predicted he would win the fight via, “a first-round TKO.”

If Ayala is able to make his prediction a reality, he would have some serious traction going for him with back to back knockout victorious. He hopes that he can continue to roll the success on his journey to finally capture a major championship.

“I feel like I am close to a title shot,” Ayala said. “I just have to stay more active this year. I feel like I win this one and get two more fights in this year which is totally possible, I am right in that mix at well. Even when I was fighting on the local circuit, I never won a championship. To have this be the one belt that I won and have it be in one of the largest organizations in the world would be like a dream come true, a great accomplishment for my career.”

While Ayala stated that he would face any of the top big men in the promotion, he dreams of getting a chance to duel with a certain legendary combatant.

“I would love the opportunity to fight Fedor [Emelianenko], he is one of my biggest idols,” Ayala said. “Just to say that I got to get in there with him. He is tough. He is definitely one of the guys that I would want to get in therewith. I will go in there in Russia or wherever they want to take me.”

20-year-old Erin Blanchfield believes a UFC championship will be in her future.

In 2019, the top all-women’s Mixed Martial Arts organization, Invicta Fighting Championship did not have a single knockout (not TKO) during the calendar year. That streak wouldn’t continue long throughout 2020. This past Friday, Erin Blanchfield was able to separate her opponent, Victoria Leonardo from consciousness in the second round of their contest at Invicta 39. The just 20-year-old fighter landed a perfectly placed left head kick that put Leonardo out cold.

“This was definitely the most impressive victory of my career,” Blanchfield told Cageside Press. “I definitely showed a lot of improvement in that fight.”

It likely wasn’t a surprise to many that “Cold Blooded” was able to get her hand raised last Friday but not many prognosticators were predicting that she would put on a striking clinic. The New York native is known for being a Brazilian jiu-jitsu protege — having won a world championship in grappling back in 2017 when she took home gold at the Eddie Bravo Invitational. However, she is quick to point out that she has been training in Muay Thai since she was in elementary school.

“I think it is super exciting because nobody knew I could knock anybody out that way either. I have never done that. It was super exciting.”

The highlight-reel knockout gained much circulation on the internet helping the top prospect gain some newfound notoriety. With her boost in popularity, fans are eager to see Blanchfield in action again. While she won’t commit to an opponent besides saying she wants to face somebody at the higher end of her division, she did give a bit of a timeline for a return.

“As soon as possible,” Blanchfield said. “We are working on it right now. I have no injuries or anything, so hopefully soon.”

With the victory, Cold Blooded improved her record to 5-1 in her brief two-year professional career. Her lone loss came at the hands of current UFC standout, Tracy Cortez in a fight where many believe Blanchfield should have been awarded the decision win. Fans and media members (myself included) have called the fight a robbery.

“It was a split decision,” Blanchfield said. “I left it in the hands of the judges. It is hard for me to get really annoyed about it. If I want to make sure I won, I had to finish her. If we get matched up again, I know I can definitely do that. Maybe I will be able to avenge that loss in the future. That is all I can hope for.”

Blanchfield doesn’t appear to be focusing on revenge against Cortez but on finding way to improve her own skills so her call-up to the premier MMA organization will come.

“All I can keep doing is winning fights in impressive fashion,” Blanchfield stated. “I will get that call eventually. I know I will be in the UFC someday and I will be a UFC champ one day. All I have to do is keeping working to get better. It is all I can do. I am just going to have to wait for them to give me that call.”

The 20-year-old knows that a call from the UFC matchmakers can come anytime. She pointed out that several fighters make their debuts as injury replacements at the last moment — which usually happens if an event is scheduled close to the combatant’s home town. She is staying ready if the same happens to her.

“I do watch if the UFC is in the area or anywhere close in [New] Jersey or New York and I see that there are flyweight fights in there. I will try to stay a little closer [to the flyweight limit] just in case, you never know. You want to be ready in case you get that call. I definitely try to stay ready.”

Macy Chiasson was able to bounce back from her first career loss with a battering of the debuting Shanna Young at UFC Rio Rancho.

TUF 28 winner (at featherweight) Macy Chiasson was in action at UFC Rio Rancho on Saturday. There, the imposing fighter was looking to shake off the first loss of her career. Opposite her was a short-notice replacement in the form of Shanna Young. The Invicta FC alum was stepping in for former flyweight champ Nicco Montaño.

While Chiasson was a former featherweight who had moved down to 135lbs, Young was an ex-flyweight who had moved up. Making the contest a rather interesting affair in terms of size and strength.

Here is how the action went down:

Round 1:

Chiasson entered the match-up as the biggest favorite on the entire card and came out swinging. Young didn’t back off and hit her larger opponent with three left high kicks to the head as they both started at a frantic pace. She briefly fell to all fours but she popped up and started to press the action. The Fortis MMA product grabbed the clinch and fired off hard shots to the body of Young. She started to brutalize Young with these knees and complimented it with some dirty boxing punches. Young attempted to fire back with punches in the clinch but didn’t have much effect. Chiasson occasionally looked for some sloppy takedowns but when she couldn’t get the debutant down, she went back to the knees. It seemed like every knee threw found its mark on Young. They briefly broke apart and the Ultimate Fighter winner hit Young with a left high kick and immediately grabbed the clinch again. She went back to her brutal knees and then finally was able to take Young down. Chiasson spun behind her opponent and finished the round with some really hard ground strikes until the round end.

Young might have been saved by the bell.

Cageside Press scored the round 10-8 for Chiasson.

Round 2:

Young started the second round with a few kicks to the body and then fired off a clean combination. She attempted a takedown but Chiasson was able to block it and then locked in a standing guillotine. Young scrambled to her feet and threw the Fortis MMA product with a whizzer trip. Chiasson quickly got back to the feet and then took Young down. The Ultimate Fighter winner briefly had Young’s back but ultimately ended up on top of Young. She kept Young’s back against the canvas and hit her with some hard elbows from on top. The New Orleans native held Young down with heavy top pressure and then postured up to tag Young with several hammerfists.

Cageside Press scored the round 10-9 Chiasson

Round 3:

The Knoxville Martial Arts Academy team member tried to start the round with an axe kick but ended up getting her leg caught and taken to the canvas. Young attempted to roll under for a kneebar but ate several hammerfists for the attempt. She gave up her back and Chiasson looked for a rear-naked choke but Young fought it off. Chiasson put her right hook in and battered Young with strikes to the side of the head. When Young tried to work to her feet, the Ultimate Fighter winner would grab her wrist and flatten her back down. In the closing seconds, Chiasson tried to lock in a rear-naked choke as the round came to an end.

Cageside Press scored the round 10-9 and the fight 30-26 for Chiasson.

Official Results: Macy Chiasson def. Shanna Young by unanimous decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-26).
